I saw the same bug on my thinkpadR60:
With i915.modeset=0 X does not start. The screen remains
black, keyboard unusable. The powerbutton worked and I could
shutdown. So I think the system was no frozen.
syslog showed no related messages.
.xsession-errors contained:
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable)
on X server ":0.0" after 110 requests (110 known processed)
with 0 events remaining.
The bug vanished after I downgraded to 2:2.9.1-4
and removed libxcb-dri2-0.
