network-manager. i often wonder why interfaces show up and disappear
in the menu and why i got wrong ip numbers from my server.
i thought the tool network-admin belongs to network-manager and tried

i found the cause
after another slowdown last week i installed metacity. i killed
sawfish and started metacity without X restart. immediatly everything
was fine. so i assume this is a bug with sawfish. probably not with
sawfish itself but the integration of sawfish with gnome (and/or my
settings).

i used xmodmap -e "keycode 64 = Alt_L Meta_L" which did not help
