I think I found out how to fix this one...
Check the (user) privileges page in phpmyadmin. In our case, there is a
difference between users created /before/ we upgraded to mysql4 and
those after:
User HostPassword Global privileges Grant
user_a localhost Ye
Found out how it works. :-)

It's not perfect, but I corrected some of the most irritating fuzzy
