Turns out I was making things more complicated than I thought.
I just replaced dual_devices.dpatch with the one provided, and it works!
Thank you very much! Now I just have to remember how I had it all
configured before.

I just thought I'd check and re-install the old deb package of
mouseemu_0.15-8_powerpc.deb I had lying around in
/var/cache/apt/archives/.
This version had a timestamp of 2007-05-30, and it too produces this
problem. Would the EV_SYN theory account for this?

I've never used dpatch before, but here goes.
I applied the patch with:
sudo dpatch-edit-patch dual_devices.dpatch debian/patches/dual_devices.dpatch
from the source root, then built the package with:
sudo dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
then installed the package.

Following the thread from bug #567756, Ariel Garcia opened a new bug
report claiming that this problem only was applicable with an empty
xorg.conf

I'm having the same problem.
I am using an apple laptop, and mapped the right and left mouse buttons
to the keyboard, and these are still working. These are mapped
using /etc/sysctl.conf
Which of the above 'fixes' is supposed to work?
