So, there are two bugs here:
(1) aptitude crashes if you input a ?term pattern and
apt-xapian-index isn't installed.
(2) aptitude treats the string "~" as ?term(~), even though all other
bare strings are treated as ?name patterns.
The first one is a little subtle to fix, beca

It looks like the problem is that I switched to using separated build
directories in the Debian packaging (so that parallel builds work), but
some of the Makefiles pick up their data relative to "." instead of
"$(srcdir)". Easy to fix.

I looked into this a bit today and I don't see how it can be happening.
The code in question is basically doing this, if you rip out some STL
and de-factor it:
int where = idx;
try
{
if(isspace(s[idx]))
++idx;
else
throw ParseException();
}

So, it turns out this is surprisingly tricky. The problem is that the
aptitude initialization process runs a mark-and-sweep before the whole
package system is ready. That seems very dicey to me, but the comments

Are you 100% sure that the changelog is never displayed? In my tests,

to be the only way to create a subclass of pkgDepCache during startup
instead of creating a straight pkgDepCache.

aptitude will crash on exit if the background thread that checks for
changelogs on the system is still running. The problem is that this
thread accesses global apt structures, which are destroyed during
shutdown. That thread should be redes

copy of a changelog by instead reusing one that it finds installed on
the system. To do this, it looks up the source package and checks
whether any of its binaries are installed, which requires reading in
