I'm sorry, but now it's working. After half a dozen reboots and
fiddles last night, with continual failure, this morning I forgot to
reboot into 2.6.18 and let 2.6.21 boot. It came up with the Nvidia

Just after I filed this wishlist item, I decided to try again. This
time vga=791 works. Surprisingly, the characters are even smaller
than when running 2.6.12. It's better than 80x25, though.
