I have a problem similar to this in that any scrolling in iceweasel forces a
spike in CPU usage and happens very slowly and jerkily.
This is not a problem in other browsers on my system or icedove.

Tried both of these settings at the same time and it caused to things to
happen, I loose video from shortly after grub until the xserver starts. I get
a distorted kdm background mouse moves around but no keyboard response
including ctrl alt
I dont think that will work as the card is an AGP card.

I have tested the instructions provided by you and this worked.
However aptitude which I used required me to step through a couple of options
as I had packages that depended on the versions in debian multimedia.
Including removing vlc.

On entering X and using applications for a short period X locks up and the

responded too.
