Thanks for the prompt reply.
FIXED!
I am attaching the script.
The other scripts use "_have". And at the end of the script, for
example in evince, the completion command is given.
Test. Launch an xterm running bash.
complete -p |grep lyx
returns nothing
lyx
gives list corresponding to 'ls *lyx'

Strange "have()" should have been defined in
/usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion
which should be called via /etc/bash_completio

I note that the latest version (of 4.*) available upstream is 4.6.1:
https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/releases/tag/v4.6.1
released 28 Oct 2021.
The only reason I realised this is that openQA just switched to using 4.6.1.
After some investigation, it was found that the abort is due to a
broken filesystem:
e2fsck 1.46.2 (28-Feb-2021)
Warning: skipping journal recovery because doing a read-only filesystem check.

The bash-complete script does not work. It calls "have lyx" but have is not a
program. Commenting out the line in /usr/share/lyx/scripts/bash-completion
it can be sourced, but bash-completion dos not load it "on demand

Hi. The patch does not apply cleanly for me, but maybe it's because
I'm trying to get the patch from the web interface.
I'll try from the git repository and will let you know how it goes.
