I had the story wrong about the symlinks in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/. The
*.so.20 links were missing, so the
*.so links that pointed to them were dead links. The workaround doesn't
have to create the *.so links since

I noticed that spooles fails to cross build from source, because it
fails finding -lmpi. It turns out that even though libopenmpi-dev is

The architectures in question don’t use the JIT, that’s why they can all use a
common header for the atomics code.
