This issue has been completely resolved for me by a recent update. To
be clear:
- I can shutdown/suspend/etc from the XFCE panel menu
- hibernate/suspend work when closing the laptop lid
- USB pen drives appear in Thunar and can be mounted

Please have a look at bug #731782 I just reported. It might be related
to this one.
The update-alternatives call there which causes a segfault:
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-www-browser
x-www-browser /usr/bin/konqueror 100 --slave
/usr/share/man/man1/x-www
