[Bug 245797] [NEW] Candidate python-apt0.7.4ubuntu7.1 unselects security-updates sources

2008-07-05 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-apt

After I upgraded from python-apt (0.7.4ubuntu7) to 0.7.4ubuntu7.1 -
through Hardy proposed - it becomes impossible to select hardy-security
in update sources.

First reported as a bug through Synaptic
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245328

before I forced back to python-apt (0.7.4ubuntu7) to fix the issue.

Two minor issues remain:
+ new upstream version filter is still displayed while there are no longer
packages in that category
+ when reloading back after unchecking hardy-proposed several error messages
mention duplicate sources (this no longer shows up after restarting synaptic)

** Affects: python-apt (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

My hardware configuration has changed (and I can't smoothly remove the new
Nvidia card from my tiny barebone) so I can't try and replicate the bug
under Intrepid.

[Bug 119774] Re: no password prompt for share also accessible anonymously

2008-11-26 Thread viktor
GUEST ACCESS TO PRIVATE DATA

Moreover with 8.10: partitions mounted (under a still open user session)
are accessible to guests.

Guest sessions were supposed to give access to as little private data as
necessary. I imagine there's a revamping planned since it's not very useful to
need an user to open a session before a guest can use the computer.
I think Guest should be a choice on login, but I can picture the big change
that would mean right now. Jaunty maybe?

[Bug 369683] [NEW] Void folders listed under local directories - IMAP related

2009-04-30 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I noticed the bug after I tried to add a second Gmail IMAP account.
There are the usual 7 local folders (Inbox, Trash, Spam...) + 6 "void" folders

Void, i.e. they don't really exist:
1. they are not labelled and right-click is inactive
2. selecting them doesn't bring up the message Empty/No message in the panel
unless the previously selected real local folder was itself Empty

Gmail IMAP brings 6 default folders in addition to Inbox: All Mail,
Drafts, Sent Mail, Spam, Starred, Trash. Trash is created, probably
because of a string translation issue (I'm using the French locale).

2008-10-24 Thread viktor
Hi,

Sorry I didn't update the bug report. As far as I can remember I ended up
using the proprietary ATI driver, or the updates solved the issue in a
matter of days.
I should have waited a full week before performing the upgrade. That is:
next month I'll do a fresh install on another partition to test intrepid.

[Bug 216304] Re: nvidia-settings crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-04-04 Thread viktor
Occurred on Jaunty Beta while upgrading packages and launching
System/Prefs/Display

I got a prompt explaining the Nautilus Display monitor wouldn't work and I
clicked 'yes' to launch the Nvidia Display monitor, which crashed while newer
packages were being installed (some xserver-xorg packages were marked for
upgrades).
The Nautilus Display monitor still wouldn't work afterwards but Nvidia settings
was ok.

I'll try to reproduce this in a couple of days when there is a new batch
of packages to upgrade.

2007-10-24 Thread viktor
Cleanly downgraded from an optimistic 8.40+ ATI driver to 8.37.6
No change. The best I can get is still 1280x1024, with proprietary fglrx
(activating the ATI restricted driver seems to help).
The windows Samsung .inf driver has been installed since PnP wasn't ok with
gutsy, yet the native 1400x1050 resolution doesn't appear in the 'Screen &
Resolution' menu/screen reference, jumping from 1280 to 1600 (not supported)!
Forcing 1400 crashes X window.

[Bug 157291] Crash after adding repositories - ill-formed sources.list

2007-10-25 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I upgraded from feisty to gutsy (amd64) last week. For this I had unchecked
repositories added under feisty like the ones for automatix, skype and miro.
Tonight I wanted to update my repositories (under Synaptic) and tried to
activate them back:
 - actually I uninstalled Automatix2 then erased its gutsy repository
 - activated the skype repository (never worked under feisty - yup, it's a
32-bits app)
 - activated the miro repository
On refresh Synaptic displayed this error msg, asking to file a bug report:

'E:Ligne 38 mal formée dans la liste des sources /etc/apt/sources.list (analyse
de distribution), E:La liste des sources ne peut être lue.'

which translates "Line 38 ill-formed in ...sources.list / The sources

I forgot to say that after changing the repositories, thru the refresh updates
were mentionned as available (update-notifier).
Subsequently launching update-mng lead to the crash described.

Mending sources.list thru sudo gedit fixes the issue (I switched back to
the status quo ante minus the Automatix repo).

...just to precise that the update-notifier erroneously mentioned new updates

[Bug 157750] Misfunction if Gutsy installed with power-manager settings for desktop only

Public bug reported:

Now power manager is always installed but you can still mention the desktop-use

==> I went to the power-manager preferences and noticed an odd thing: no choice
was registered in General/Notification zone whereas it requires a default
choice.
Choosing always or never display an icon fixes the issue.

[Bug 157750] Power-Manager Misfunction on first session click to log-off, etc.

2007-10-29 Thread viktor
Arrgh! Here we go again!

Issue is not fixed once and for all.
The first time in a session I click on the Red Button there's this 30+ sec. lag
before power manager displays only 5 options (no standby or hibernate).
Cancelling to cancel the option panel: on subsequent tries all goes fine, 1/2
sec. lag and 7 options...

Sorry if my previous description was a bit fast on pointing out the
possible causes. There also could be some kind of parameter conflict
between X and Gnome.

Yep it seems it comes from the x/Gnome keyboard layout conflict I have.

I tried with another user's session and all is ok with pw-mng. Succefully and
rapidly logging off and in again to open a session with my profile the

On session opening I have this message : keyboard layout conflict between X and

[Bug 155501] Resolution issue: default screen resolution impossible to get with ATI Radeon Xpress (regression)

2007-10-21 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I upgraded an up-to-date Feisty amd64 to Gutsy, knowing of the caveats
concerning bug #132716.
On reboot with the upgrade I got the blank screen (more exactly no output
signal which causes the display to go on stand-by) on X window described in
that bug then installed xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.195+git20071020tv_amd64.deb
which got X window to work, only with bad resolution.
I had also activated the proprietary ATI driver in the 'Restricted Driver
Manager' menu.

Then I could never get the correct resolution through menu 'Screen &
resolution'. Chosing the correct 1400x1050 even at the default 60Hz
suggested (LCD supports 75Hz) doesn't work.

Forcing thru xrandr -s 1400x1050 -r 75 (or 60) gives the same blank screen
(i.e. display goes on standby).
Installed Samsung windows .inf driver to add the display to the list in the S&R
menu but it choses resolution 1600x1200 (unsupported) on reboot and 1400x1050
is nowhere to be found.

I tried dpkg reconfigure, then to manually edit the xorg.conf file, to
no avail.

Currently working with 1280x1024 which is the biggest.

[Bug 161784] Nautilus fails to access /home/Personal File

Thx Arnaud,

hs_err_pid10416.log
hs_err_pid11835.log
hs_err_pid7827.log
hs_err_pid9285.log

+ nautilus-debug-log.txt

Yet all those files were last modified a week or more before the issue
arose.

Actually I had one file in red font: alsa-driver-1.0.14.tar.bz (corrupted? it
had been there for the past 50 days)
Erasing it solved the issue.

[Bug 157750] Re: Lag after pressing shutdown button

2007-11-03 Thread viktor
I reactivated acpid in System/Administration/Services and now I will
always have this lag and only 5 choices.

The X/Gnome conflict is now less than a sure point although I changed a
lot my xorg.conf & ATI driver back and forth since gutsy release.

A bug was already fixed (as I can read from community forums) at the beta
stage concerning the problem of choosing not to install power-manager when
prompted to enter the settings.
Now power manager is always installed but you can still mention the
desktop-use only, which seems to have caused this bug:

- > on click the button to log off/switch users... causes a display freeze
(mouse is still active though there are no longer active zones to click) for
more than 30 sec. before the options panel is eventually displayed (I think the

the action called for)

Reproduced today (Apr-27 up-to-date lucid amd64 RC).

This is really not an important bug, yet it may occur to curious people
exploring the linux desktop and thus give them a bad opinion. The panel
freezes, keyboard doesn't work with alt+F2 (should I file a specific bug
here?) so the user has to find a way to kill the panel processus.
Closing the session is the most direct way.

[Bug 497334] Re: I cannot copy or move contacts between Personal and Ubuntu One address books

2010-01-24 Thread Viktor
Hi!

I tested it today morning. The result of the test case is similar but in
this case counchdb was running.

It can be different question why coushdb process was broken down during
the previous test occasion.

bact to the test case. Detected log rows to this test case are..."
** (evolution:2060): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL'
failed

(evolution:2060): libglade-WARNING **: could not find widget creation
function

(nautilus:3774): Eel-CRITICAL **: eel_preferences_get_boolean: assertion

It might be something in the drag&drop implementation in evolution. Especially
around the address book GUI controls and objects.

Regards,
Viktor

[Bug 497334] Re: I cannot copy or move contacts between Personal and Ubuntu One address books

2010-01-19 Thread Viktor
Hi!
Of course.
I have just tried to copy all of my local name cards into Ubuntu One and now it
was successful. Before this try I did not updated my couchdb package.

BUT

I completed a few more ad-hoc test cases and I could reproduce the error
partially.
1.) I have created an test name card in my local personal repository.
2.) After that I tried to drag&drop it into the "Ubuntu One" row in the left
side evolution panel.
3.) A pop-up window displayed and inform me that this record is a duplicate
(because I use a valid e-mail address in this test card)
4.) I clicked on the "Add" button.
5.) Nothing special happened (no display error message) but my name card was
not copied into "Ubunto One" repository.

I repeated the test case above some times and finally got an error
message with "Error while adding the card..." or similar. Screenshot is
attached.

[Bug 489567] [NEW] System freeze on intensive left-button scrollbar scrolling

2009-11-28 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Reproduced several times: keybord/mouse won't work, thus a reboot is the
only way out.

On repeated scrolling using the (vertical) scrollbar on various websites,
Firefox seems to permanently freeze, except that it's the whole system that
freezes.
It seems doing small back and forth motions with the scrollbar (left-button
controlled) triggers this very annoying bug.
Maybe it's more probable one hour at least into a Firefox session.

Karmic 64-bit
USB keyboard
PS/2 optical Mouse (USB to PS/2 adapter)

Apparently no flash or Ajax involved: occured on text content intensive
websites such as wikipedia where I would need to browse rapidly through
documents.

[Bug 490562] [NEW] VLC crashes when clicking in the Playlist top row

2009-11-30 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

Reproduced 100% of attempts:

In VLC, either freshly started (no media shortlisted) or playing for
about an hour, opening the Playlist window works (unlike reported in bug

listed) crashes the media player.

Either clicking on Title, Duration or Album (top row) crashes VLC
instantly.

[Bug 562068] [NEW] Activating compiz messes up display

2010-04-13 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After yesterday's updates to Lucid beta2 (64bit): kernel 2.6.32-20.29
i.e. before the actual upgrade to 2.6.32-20.30

So as to properly test Docky, I tried to launch compiz via
System>Preferences>Display>Desktop Effects: Normal
it searched for 'Available drivers' for quite a few seconds then prompted to
choose for Previous settings/Keep new.

Below, the "Desktop Effects" tab showed both "No Effects" and "Normal" selected.
On reopening this tab via the System menu it appears that compiz was not
activated.

On reboot the display was messed up:
 * over the desktop, the cursor would be an X instead of the regular arrow
 * no titlebars, no window borders so it became really annoying to manage
windows (esp. Firefox)
 * no window background/foreground priority: latest window would just stay
front > extremely annoying

After today's updates and reboot into 2.6.32-20.30 I was able to reproduce this
on first try. Going back to "Desktop Effects" fixed the issue, then again
messed up.
Currently I'm only able to reproduce it while trying to set effects to Normal:
the display is only messed up as described above for a while.

For the time being I don't know if this is related to my Nvidia
(current) driver, Xserver or remaing Docky packages.

[Bug 558998] Re: [lucid] compiz-gnome broken because of metacity update

2010-04-14 Thread viktor
Still having the issue on reboot from earlier updates (round noon).

** No titlebars and window border whatsoever **
** Latest opened window stays on top **

Workaround: I had to go to System>Preferences ... Desktop Effects tab
and try and activate compiz to get metacity working again (and thus
getting an usable desktop).

[Bug 355200] Re: noteboot toshiba tecra r10 - apm (sleep, suspend, standy) not working

2010-03-16 Thread Viktor
Suspend is working now.
However, not very convenient handling of screens remains.

Current configuration:

nvidia driver from http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu repository:
195.36.03-0ubuntu1~karmic~nvidiavdpauppa2

kernel:
$ uname -a
Linux ipnp-n45 2.6.31-20-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 8 09:02:26 UTC 2010
x86_64 GNU/Linux

I didn't have much time to figure out which update made the difference.
I may do it later, if anyone is interested.

[Bug 557099] [NEW] Crash on installing bindwood Firefox extension

2010-04-07 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

[Bug 30522] Re: MASTER - Firefox goes to windowed state, not maximized when leaving full screen mode

2010-04-06 Thread viktor
Looks like some kind of regression with 3.6.3 released lately in Lucid:

same problem here as originally noted + titlebar is lost in the
process!!

1. Open Firefox
2. Fullscreen mode (f11)
3. Toggle normal (f11 again) -> not maximised + titlebar has been permanently
removed

Conclusion: never hurry in the wake of Mozilla zeal to fiddle with Pwned2own
bugs that could have been fixed next month.

[Bug 556311] [NEW] gnome-panel freeze on cascading contextual app-launcher menu

2010-04-06 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I found this bug yesterday (up-to-date Lucid beta1 64bit) while right-
clicking to try and remove directly some apps from the Gnome panel
Applications menu (wishlist: menu-editor shortcut via contextual menu).

To reproduce:

1. Open the Applications menu
2. Open Graphics sub-menu (for instance, this is how I did and reproduced it
but suspect it can work with any)
3. Chose an app launcher - I chose "Simple scanner" - and right click for
contextual menu
4. Click so that one of the last contextual menus (i.e. adding a tray menu)
opens without highlighting either of the choices
5. wait for a couple of seconds with the whole cascading opened
(Appplications/Graphics/app context menu/add tray) and no final selection made

There it is, gnome-panel freezes. You can no longer use it. Logging out and
back in doesn't even restart it.
Very annoying: the Gnome Applications menu is frozen and always on top.

Very very annoying: Alt+F2 launches gnome-application-control (Launch
application) but it is frozen so most of the system is unusable unless
you can work around thru desktop documents/launchers.

[Bug 556311] Re: gnome-panel freeze on cascading contextual app-launcher menu

2010-04-06 Thread viktor
I reproduced it again after a while (still after fiddling around with Simple
Scan).
I'll try to pintpoint what triggers this on my machine and try it with another
menu app-launcher.

Running apps: Firefox, Calculator, Transmission
Additionnal steps on the path to reproducing: going several times thru the 5
steps described, creating a panel launcher then removing it from panel.

seems that and the rolling the mouse over the main (Applications) menu can
cause the intermediate menu (Graphics, Office...) to close and thus "break the
chain" with the still-opened contextual menu (two 'Add as' panes).
+ Note: it is important not to click elsewhere before the intermediate menu
disapears, and just roll over the first 2 menu panes.

[Bug 556311] Re: gnome-panel freeze on cascading contextual app-launcher menu

2010-04-06 Thread viktor
** Description changed:

Add as tray/menu)
opens without highlighting either of the choices
  5. wait for a couple of seconds with the whole cascading opened
(Appplications/Graphics/app context menu/add tray) and no final selection made

There it is, gnome-panel freezes. You can no longer use it.
Very annoying: the Gnome Applications menu is frozen and always on top.

Very very annoying: Alt+F2 launches gnome-application-control (Launch
application) but it is frozen so I needed to lanch system-monitor to
  restart gnome-panel.

+ UPDATE: reproduced with other menu launcher (OOo Writer for instance).
+ It seems that and the rolling the mouse over the main (Applications)
+ menu can cause the intermediate menu (Graphics, Office...) to close and
+ thus "break the chain" with the still-opened contextual menu (two 'Add

disapears, and just roll over the first 2 menu panes.
+ First the highlighted choice in pane #2 (after the main #1 Application pane)
will disappear,
+ Then, back on the main pane menu, #2 will disappear altogether. Freeze should
be noted exactly there (if you click on #2 before it disappears it just
highlights another app-launcher and the bug doesn't occur).

[Bug 435509] Re: "ACPI: invalid PBLK length [7]" in karmic amd64

2010-05-26 Thread viktor
Hi Jeremy,

Bug didn't appear after upgrading to beta3, if i remember well.

So I guess it's fixed.

** Description changed:

Was the only error message to show up before the normal "* Starting service
xyz" lines when I installed karmik 64bits alpha 5.
It consistently appears as the first error message since then.

On this machine I have a partition with Hardy 32bit where the Suspend
option is not available (although Hibernate works well).
+
+ UPDATE: bug disappear after I upgraded to Lucid during the beta stage.

[Bug 355200] Re: noteboot toshiba tecra r10 - apm (sleep, suspend, standy) not working

2010-02-14 Thread Viktor
Can confirm this happening on Karmic, too (Toshiba Tecra r10-14c). I
have attached related dmesg log and xorg log files.

Interesting things to note:
1) This was happening for me under Jaunty from the clean installation. But,
from one unspecified (I'm sorry I hadn't caught that) kernel update, suspending
started working. It kept like that for few updates and, again, it stopped
working. Don't remember the particular kernel update, but I think it was
related to updates for toshiba computers.
2) Other thing which is possibly related to this defect is that after loging
into xserver session I can not switch to other tty. After pressing ctrl+alt+1
the screen goes off, fortunately I can switch back to tty7.
3) Last, this is tightly related to both of previous points. When I boot the
laptop with external screen attached, the supspend works. From start, it
displayes all the boot info on the external screen until the x login where it
goes back to laptop screen. With this, I can switch to other ttys which are
displayed on the external screen. Important thing is that I have to boot with
the monitor attached, does not work when it's been attached while running.
(this last point tested on latest Karmic updates only, don't know whether it
worked or not before)

[Bug 424809] [NEW] Sound (and video) hangs when read from NTFS partition

2009-09-05 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Seems to occur on first launch of either VLC, MPlayer or Totem media
players, with greater probability (and unpredictability) with VLC and
especially when skipping through the timeline.

May involve NTFS-3G, pulseaudio packages and reiserfs.

Description:
Sound chokes and hangs for a dozen seconds, video hangs in slow motion and then
fasts forward to catch up.

Reproduced more easily with a Video file w/ older encoding (Divx Mpeg4 v4) for
which MPlayer warns:
(divx4/(old)xvid/opendivx)-->forcing low_delay flag
Seems harder to reproduce with Divx Mpeg4 v5 encoded files.

Also occurs alternatively with VLC or Totem on standard MP3 audio files
(Sampling 44kHz, bitrate 128 and 192kb/s)

This bug is specific to Jaunty (never had a similar problem on my Hardy
ext3-partition).
NOTE: my Jaunty partition filesystem is reiserfs.

[Bug 463308] [NEW] X crashes with a certain load of Google Apps pages opened in Firefox 64-bit

2009-10-29 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Crash occured some time between 14:10 and 14:17. X crashed and I got a console
text prompt to log in a couple of seconds before getting the X login window.
I was working under Firefox 3.5.3 64-bit with some Google Docs and Analytics
opened. I wasn't doing anything else (Skype was opened but I was not even
listening to anything).

[Bug 432905] Re: EDAC amd64: WARNING: ECC is NOT currently enabled by the BIOS. Module will NOT be loaded.

2009-09-23 Thread viktor
ECC is a characteristic of high quality RAM chips used in servers (see
wikipedia).
You can enable this in your Bios, but I doubt you have ECC RAM installed.

[Bug 427822] Re: fsck says last write time in future

2009-09-23 Thread viktor
Seems there was a regression since Alpha 6.
Problem came back with updates from yesterday, and today's updates didn't seem
to have fixed it, although I can't be sure since fschk is only launched if
errors in the filesystem are found on bootup.

GMT+2 - fortunately this lets me retry less than 2h after first boot.
