[Bug 301970] [NEW] update.manager unresponsive after installing updates

2008-11-25 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Release:8.10
update-manager: 1:0.93.34

update-manger notifies me of new packages. i click the icon, update-manager
appears and shows updates that can be installed.
i click install, update-manger calculates everything, starts downloading and
installs the packages.
after that, while calculating system status, update-manger is grayed out for
sereal minutes, i cannot interact anymore.
top shows that update-manger does little to nothing while hanging.
eventually update-manger is back, the close button is active again and i can
close the application.

this behavior started after i upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10

updates with aptitude or apt do not show such behavior.

please let me know how i can improve my bug report!

[Bug 352373] Re: [jaunty] System randomly freezes

2009-05-27 Thread Ulrich
These random freezes also happens to me and I find it a serious bug as
it prevents me doing my daily work. Could you please upgrade the
repositories to stable kernel packages for Jaunty. I had several freezes
during the last days and lost some work. Jaunty seems too unstable and I
cannot recommended it currently here in a our research institute for
daily work.

Thx, Ulrich

[Bug 283739] [NEW] evolution doesn't update unread message count

2008-10-15 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Architecture: i386
Version: 2.24.0-0ubuntu2

after upgrading to intrepid, evolution is behaving weird.
when opening evolution, it collects all messages, then sums up all unread
messages (including spam mails) and shows the number of all unread messages
besides the inbox label. if a message is read or marked as read, the summary
count doesn't update properly. though if new messages arrive, it adds up
correctly.

so i end up with evolution showing hundreds of unread messages even if
all messages are red.

i hope this isn't confusing, english is not my native language ;)

[Bug 335869] Re: crash (can't draw desktop) if desktop effects are enabled

2009-03-12 Thread ulrich
another thing to mention:
if i don't go any higher in resolution than 1600x1200, nautilus works with
compiz!
but after some time the screen gets all mixed up and x freezes, no keyboard
interaction anymore.

meanwhile i also tested jaunty/intrepid i386. compiz works like a charm,
the bonobo-activation-server error still there, but no regression...

[Bug 335869] [NEW] crash (can't draw desktop) if desktop effects are enabled

2009-02-28 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

if i want to enable desktop effects, nautilus can't draw the desktop anymore.
windows of open applications behave the way they should, even right-clicking
the desktop works. though the desktop isn't responding to new files/folders -
no repaint.
left-clicking the desktop freezes the whole system.

on only ONE occasion gnome showed the error message:
"Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when
attempting to locate the factory. Killing bonobo-activation-server and
restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem."

doing so, doesn't do any good, results in a completely garbeld/mixed up screen.
this happens in latest jaunty AND in intrepid, all updates applied.

also, if desktop effects are enable, logs show:
bonobo-activation-server : could not associate with desktop session
as in bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bonobo/+bug/293970

[Bug 335869] Re: crash (can't draw desktop) if desktop effects are enabled

2009-03-03 Thread ulrich
i should add that i get no other error logs on my system while compiz is
enabled.
if there is anything i could do to provide a better bug report, please let me
know, i'm eager to squash this bug!

on a sidenote:
as you can see in dmesg.txt, i get this IOMMU warning
[0.004000] Please enable the IOMMU option in the BIOS setup
[0.492232] PCI-DMA: using GART IOMMU.
[0.492232] PCI-DMA: Reserving 64MB of IOMMU area in the AGP aperture

i tried all kinds of kernelparams to get rid of it, but then, all
information i found was more for kernelhackers then real people ;)

since this is a system without ANY agp capabilities i also tried kernel param
'iommu=noagp' but the message still comes up. is there any advice on this? or
should i file another bug for this?
i found some people having the same warning, but it doesn't stops them from
running compiz...

[Bug 335869] Re: crash (can't draw desktop) if desktop effects are enabled

2009-03-27 Thread ulrich
looks like i found the real bug.
it's neither compiz nor nautilus, the binary nvidia driver is the bad guy in
this case!

the nvidia driver was computing false DPI (75 x 75) for my monitor.
solution:
using nv as driver and starting x.

xdpyinfo | grep -B1 dot
  dimensions:1600x1200 pixels (363x272 millimeters)
  resolution:112x112 dots per inch

modifying xorg.conf so that it reads
Option "UseEdidDpi" "False"
Option "DPI" "112 x 112"

compiz/nautilus works (since 2 hours so far...).

i can confirm this 'bug' and should also add that this seems to be a
problem in totem.

i do:

open totem(-gstreamer) and play a stream until it finishes.
click the play icon > totem just starts downloading all data again.

since totem-mozilla uses xine, i think the problem is totem itself cause
the bug appears regardless of the backend.

[Bug 26825] Re: evdev is not working when you hotplug devices

this is still an issue in edgy.
as heiko mentioned, there is no generic device for evdev (or at least i'm not

so if you set up your mouse with evdev you have to specify something like

Option "Device" "/dev/input/event1"

but the problem is, your pointing device isn't always 'event1' if you're
hotplugging your devices.

[Bug 113857] Trash Panel Applet should behave more consistent and sane

2007-05-10 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

trash applet should act more like other applets or icons that appear in
notification area.

for example:
left-click trash applet --> nautilus window for ~/.Trash opens
again left-click trash applet --> the nautilus window should close.

why:
at current state, left-clicking the panel icon just opens as much nautilus
windows as you left-click it.
this should not happen, since there is no sane reason for more than one of such
window.
IF a user needs more than one .Trash window, he/she can right-click the panel
icon and open as much windows as he/she needs anyways.

[Bug 135048] Re: better handling of flash animations when compiz is enabled

2007-08-30 Thread ulrich
i did some additional testing, so here we go.

flash-nonfree:
xorg needs 60-65% cpu, firefox 25%.

swfdec:
xorg needs 70-75% cpu, firefox 15-20%.

gnash:
doesent do anything after installation. i visited some sites that use flash
content, but gnash wouldnt do anything with it... so no results.

with totem, there is no problem at all. watching a movie trailer on apple.com
gives
10 -15% cpu for totem plugin, 7-10% for xorg.

i measured this with 'top'. if theres a better way to do this, please let me
know, i'm glad to help any further!

[Bug 136954] don't ask for a dist-upgrade, just do it

2007-09-03 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

update-manager asks the user if he/she would like to dist-upgrade if additional
packages need to be updated or installed.
it then opens a pop-up window and the update process looks different from a
'normal' update process.
this behaviour just confuses the user. update-manager is in charge of handling
updates, NOT the user.
so, just install/update all packages, don't ask the user what to do.
users who fancy with their apt policy don't use update-manager anyway...

[Bug 136954] Re: don't ask for a dist-upgrade, just do it

2007-09-04 Thread ulrich
as i understand it, update-manager also falls back to this behaviour if the
upgrade requires additional packages.
i would propose that,

° if the upgrade requires additional packages, just do it.
don't ask the user, you're in charge of upgrading the current system,
just do a 'dist-upgrade' and install everything necessary. and keep the visual
experience the same as with 'upgrade'.

° if the upgrade requires the removal of packages, just do it.
as i understand the process of 'dist-upgrade', it just removes packages
that are no longer required because of new dependencies and the removal of such
packages is not going to break your current system.[1] oh, and keep the visual
experience the same as with 'upgrade'.

[1] this is based on the assumption that 'dist-upgrade' is there to help
the user and does not break your system. at least i, as 'joe user', had
never any breakage and use 'dist-upgrade' instead of 'upgrade' since
warty.

for integration in the UI, would something like this makes sense?

   - update-manger-

[Bug 136954] Re: don't ask for a dist-upgrade, just do it

2007-09-04 Thread ulrich
just to be sure, as i am in no way a programmer:

update-manager performs an 'upgrade' by default. the dependencies and
conflicts of the individual packages currently installed, inform update-
manager if there a additional packages required or packages need to be
removed. if such case happens, then update-manager performes a 'dist-
upgrade' which is based on a backend different from 'upgrade'.

my goal/reason to file this bug report was that either way you do the upgrade,
don't aks the user. hide the complexity. why should a user be bothered if a
package now requires, say python-pygoocanvas?
so why bother adding more
   a) interaction
  - by informing the user that the upgrade process is different from
default; again, why should the user care?

 and

   b) confusion
  - use a different UI style to do the task.

i hope i'm not sounding disrespectful, cause i really enjoy using
ubuntu. in fact it's the only OS i run. these are just some thoughts
towards a clean and simple UI and a 'linux for human beings'. i see a
danger in dist-upgrade if you're running a development release, cause
there *will* be broken packages/dependencies. but is there great danger
if you're running a stable release?

[Bug 124538] Xsession crashes on Startup - Both "usual" Gnome and XGL

2007-07-07 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I just re-installed Ubuntu yesterday on my Notebook. I use Compiz Fusion
(newest) and Emerald. I use the proprietary ATI driver for my Radeon
Mobility 9700. I'm running compiz and emerald in an XGL session usually.
Until yesterday it just worked fine, but when I booted this morning, the
Gnome Session immediately crashed at Boot-Up. Starting a "usual" Gnome
Session without any startscripts allows me to go online and look for
help on the internet as long as I don't close the "Your session didn't
last 10 seconds..." window. But so far I haven't found anything that
helps me.

Here's what you can find in my .xsession-errors:

workaround:
[Alt] + [F2]
nm-connection-editor
[Enter]

click "Add" select "Mobile Broadband" and click "Create..." follow the
dialog at the end a "Editing" window appears, click "Save" in there. The
connection now shows up in the Network list in the Mobile Broadband
section of Network settings.

[Bug 1568750] Re: With dual SIM, SIM choice is not retained for a SMS conversation

2016-04-14 Thread Ulrich
I can confirm this issue on my bq E5, since updating to OTA 10.1 this
week. I use the dual sim mode with a business and a private SIM. When
writing a SMS on a private conversation, it always switches me to
business. Choosing private conversation sometimes works, sometimes not.
I have even set "always ask for outgoing messages" in the system config,
but it just lets me switch to the first SIM.

This is annoying because it confuses my contacts with SMS sent from an
unknown number and should be fixed as soon as possible.

[Bug 1122780] [NEW] Constant background noise

2013-02-11 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

I'm having a hard time figuring this out!

First, when moving the mouse, i hear some noise in the speakers.
Second, depending on how much programs run simultaniously and what gets
rendered on the screen, i get a constant growling noise in the speakers paired
with the slightly higher sounding noise from the mouse movements.

If only the desktop is shown, there's no background noise in the
speakers.

Some examples that produce a background noise:
when switching between desktops, as soon as the little window opens that shows
all available desktops, the noise starts.
open a terminal, open a file in vim. as soon as i move the cursor i get a
growling/ crackling sound.
while filling out this bug report, moving the cursor (with arrow keys) inside
the text field i get that growling sound.
yet even stranger: the blinking cursor in the textfield of this bugreport
produces a noise as soon as the cursor is shown, so it constantly goes tock...
tock... tock... tock...

I tried the workarounds mentioned at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/PositionReporting but nothing helped.

Anything i can do on my part to further investigate this?
Thanks!

[Bug 868175] [NEW] thunderbird doesent remember last window position

2011-10-05 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

thunderbird should honor the location where it was closed last time and open at
the same position when started.
for example: on my dual monitor setup, thunderbird opens on the first screen in
fullscreen mode. i then move it to the second screen and close theunderbird.
opening it again, thunderbird opens on the first screen instead of screen 2.

[Bug 1013174] [NEW] Menu only visible when Image window/panel active

2012-06-14 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

When working gimp, the main menu is only visible if the window
containing the image is active. This means, that if you do something in
the layerpanel/window, the main menu of gimp is inactive in the topbar.
This makes working with gimp very very unproductive, cause you
constantly have to click in the main window to do any actual work. Doing
something that has a dialogue window, produces the same result. Scale a
layer, the dialogue comes up, you confirm or cancel the action and your
main menu is gone and you have to click/activate the main winow again.

Since the Toolbox panel/winow, the LayersChannelsPaths panel/window and
the main Image panel/window are part of gimp and your actual workflow,
there is no sane reason why the main menu should hide if you
click/activate any panel or window other than the actual image.

[Bug 943153] [NEW] x-www-browser not the same as gnome-www-browser

2012-02-29 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

I just discovered that x-www-browser is different to gnome-www-browser.
This can cause some weird behaviour.

Use case:

Install firefox and opera on your system. Opera sets itself as default
x-www-browser wheras firefox sets itself as default gnome-www-browser.
Now, some apps use gnome-www-browser, while others rely on x-www-browser.
For example: clicking a link in thunderbird opens firefox, while dropbox opens
opera.
For the not-so-power users, there is no graphical way to set x-www-browser. (At
least, i havent found one)

So the question is: Is it really necessary to have these two seperate
confi-options still in 2012?
Wouldnt it make sense to have these two config-options linked to one another?
Or are there still so many use cases that justify a distiction between
gnome-www-browser and x-www-browser?

2010-07-13 Thread ulrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

in my dual screen setup, evolution fails to remember it's last position on
screen when opened.
example: i move evolution to the right screen and close evolution.
openening evolution again, evolution starts on the left screen. every other app
opens at the last used spot.

i searched in evos options but couldnt find anything.
