[Bug 89364] Re: Apache2 default site contains only the words "It works!"

2007-08-27 Thread Owen
Hi Christoph,

The problem is not about the installer - it's about his customer...
Usually, the "it works" page is left up by the ISP that owns the server
hardware. The customer, who owns the domain, comes along and thinks
apache has hijacked his site. Hence he flames apache...

The point is that you are not writing for developers. You are writing
for technically incompetent web-site owners.

[Bug 89364] Re: Apache2 default site contains only the words "It works!"

2007-06-11 Thread Owen
IN IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced then check "show friendly
HTTP error messages". Then go to http://httpd.apache.org/wibble and you
will see a client-generated page (ie, not the error_404.html page from
apache). This is a well-known feature of IE and I'm a little uneasy that
you're not aware of it...

Did you do the research I suggested above? You will find many of these
issues have already been discussed..

[Bug 89364] Re: Apache2 default site contains only the words "It works!"

2007-06-11 Thread Owen
Hi Noah,

Did you try the thing I suggested to get IE to show its "friendly" error
messages? The trouble is that it's possible to run a configuration of IE
that does not display the 404 sent from the server. That's what Soren is
talking about... Your response to his message implied you were unaware
of this.

As regards finding th thread; you're the one proposing the change so
please don't be offended if I invite you to do the leg-work :-) FWIW, I
already spent about 20 minutes searching MARC but couldn't hit on a
sufficiently accurate keyword. I already suggested you check the
revision history to narrow down the date.

Maybe someone else can remember the kerfuffle?

Follow-up: Have a look at

5. This was written to try to mitigate the questions that ASF was
getting on this subject.

[Bug 89364] Re: Apache2 default site contains only the words "It works!"

2007-06-11 Thread Owen
Noah,

What usually happens is that an ISP sets up a site for a client and
loads the default docs. They then tell the client that their site is
available. The client goes to their site and sees the apache logo and
assumes that ASF has hijacked their site. I was around the last time an
irate but technically inept web-user decided Apache had "stolen" his
website and it was not pleasant - he spammed the lists for weeks until
we had to get his ISP to unplug him...

Before proceeding further, I would urge you to do two things:

1) Search in the mailing list archives for the previous (and lengthy)
discussions that took place on this very issue a few years ago (get the
date when the page was changed to the current terse version from CVS and
then search back from then in the archives). Read the thread and then
reflect if this is still a good idea.

2) If you still think it's necessary to change it, compose a text that
you'd like to see. It will have to avoid the pitfall that inexperienced
web users will think that the ASF has "hijacked" their website. BTW,
note that said users cannot be assumed to understand, or even read,
anything that appears on the page. Oh, and you'll need it in all
supported languages, too.

[Bug 89364] Re: Apache2 default site contains only the words "It works!"

2007-06-27 Thread Owen
I know to any reasonably same person this text is perfectly obvious, but
there will always be someone who sees that page and thinks "their"
website has been hi-jacked. You can write what you like but you can't
force people to read it, still less understand it.

If you do decide to change it, by all means put an Ubuntu banner on
it... then they'll think it's Ubuntu that hi-jacked the site and
*they'll* get all the flame-mail ;-)

"This appears to be fixed by adding pci=nomsi to kernel options in grub.

Nope this did not fix the issue. Might be something I am installing
(MythTV, mysql???)

Must be something else wrong. I have rolled back to 9.04 and used
pci=nomsi and so far appears to be working.

[Bug 448316] Re: Live install step "Prepare partitions" hangs on 9.10-beta 64bits

2009-11-03 Thread owen
I had the same symptoms on my Asus m2a-vm hdmi (AMD 690G) board. I
tried the i386 and AMD64 iso and neither worked from install from boot
or install from live ubuntu. I wouldn't say that the prepare partitions
screen hung, rather that the list of partitions/devices was empty.

In my particular case, the problem is to do with RAID. My board
supports RAID, but I have it set to use IDE controller in the bios. I
think the installer on live CD seems to see my (disabled) raid support
and lists only raid partitions (I have none).

For me the solution was to download the alternative text based installer
which provides an additional install screen asking whether to look for
raid partitions. If I choose 'yes', I get no devices/partitions. If I
choose 'no', I see my partitions and the install can be successfully
completed.

The odd thing is that the live ubuntu can see the partitions, but the
live installer cannot.

[Bug 1916852] [NEW] Update bails leaving system in a corrupted state

2021-02-25 Thread Owen
Public bug reported:

I ran a do-release-upgrade and all seemed to run ok until it hit some
kind of error at which point it exited saying the system had been
returned to its original state. Unfortunately it hadn't. I carried on
working, thought nothing more about the error, assuming the system was
as it was before, until I rebooted.

The system booted, launched X, sddm and the login screen. However, the
login screen was a mess, no icons and black text in black boxes. I
logged in and the desktop was the same, actually worse. I dropped in to
the terminal to discover there were 3,500 package updates. The /etc/apt/
directory had been overwritten with entries for hirsute. Some packages
must have already been updated to break the DM so badly. Attempting to
run the updates showed there was one new package that conflicted with a
new one. The old package uninstalled with no dependencies and no issues.
Sorry, can't remember the package, but it was a -data or some such.

I need this system, so I have now fixed the issues, it may be too late
to gather much more information.

[Bug 1916857] [NEW] Color corections not sticking in Plasma

2021-02-25 Thread Owen
Public bug reported:

My laptop screen needs colour corrections. In Groovy this worked but in
Hirsute it doesn't.

I calibrated the screen and have a good profile. In Groovy I used the
systemsettings5 app to install and use this colour correction. All
worked perfectly.

In Hirsute this profile is still there and clicking on it applies the
corrections, but a few seconds later it reverts. The checkbox remains
where it is. Clicking in Default and back on the profile repeats,
profile on, profile off after a couple of seconds.

I have installed three other profiles and notice that the delay is after
the first click. I.e. clicking on profile after profile, the reversion
always occurs about 3 seconds after the first click, not the last.

To get the profile to stick I had to log out, log in using Ubuntu /
Gnome default desktop, apply the corrections there, log out and log in
to Plasma-X11. However, this didn't last over a reboot.

[Bug 1916857] Re: Color corections not sticking in Plasma

2021-03-02 Thread Owen
Appears it's not limited to just Plasma. Every login option apart from
Ubuntu (Xorg) exhibits the same behaviour. For some reason I now have
Ubuntu, Ubuntu (Xorg) and Ubuntu (Wayland), and Plasma (X11) offered for
login. Plasma (Wayland) just hangs.

Tried launching the Ubuntu settings app as me and sudo when in Plasma
but the same behaviour is exhibited.

Need to login using Ubuntu (Xorg), change the colour corrections,
logout, login using Plasma (X11), launch Plasma settings and apply the
colour corrections.

On logging in to Plasma (X11) I noticed the correct colour correction is
checked but not applied. I need to select a different profile and the
select the desired one again.

[Bug 1860985] Re: packagekitd using 100% CPU

2020-01-27 Thread Owen
The PPA was deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/webdesigner/deb/
stable main

The linked ticket does sound like the issue, but my other concern is
despite setting the "Automatically check for updates" to "Never" is
Software and Updates the system continues to look for update at quite a
high frequency and even when packagekitd is "idle" it still uses 20% CPU

[Bug 1860985] Re: packagekitd using 100% CPU

2020-01-31 Thread Owen
It's off again, this time an opensuse repository. I would remove it
about now but it seems it can't be removed without breaking other stuff.

The following packages will be REMOVED
  apturl gnome-packagekit gnome-software gnome-software-plugin-flatpak
gnome-software-plugin-snap gstreamer1.0-packagekit muon muon-discover
muon-notifier muon-updater
  nautilus-share package-update-indicator packagekit pk-update-icon
plasma-discover software-properties-common software-properties-gtk
software-properties-qt ubuntu-desktop
  ubuntu-desktop-minimal ubuntu-software

Good grief, it's got its tentacles in to loads.

How do I disable it, how do I make it check for updates every few hours
not seconds, how do I tell it not to retry broken PPAs insessently
consuming 100% CPU. How do I turn this wretched thing off?!

[Bug 1869723] [NEW] latest updates to libpango-1.0-0 seem to break dependencies from DropBox and BitDefender

2020-03-30 Thread Owen
Public bug reported:

I'm using 20.04 beta. I think the latest updates to Pango have broken
dependencies for DropBox-2020 and BitDefender, of less importance.

Has libpango1.0-0 become libpango-1.0-0? I think DropBox depends on
libpango-1.0-0, or maybe another package that's been superceded. doing a
sudo apt upgrade gives:

The following additional packages will be installed:
  libpango-1.0-0 libpango-1.0-0:i386 libpango1.0-dev libpangocairo-1.0-0
libpangocairo-1.0-0:i386 libpangoft2-1.0-0 libpangoft2-1.0-0:i386
libpangoxft-1.0-0 pango1.0-tools
The following packages will be REMOVED
  bitdefender-scanner-gui dropbox libpango1.0-0
The following packages will be upgraded:
  gir1.2-pango-1.0 libpango-1.0-0 libpango-1.0-0:i386 libpango1.0-dev
libpangocairo-1.0-0 libpangocairo-1.0-0:i386 libpangoft2-1.0-0

[Bug 1916857] Re: Color corections not sticking in Plasma

2021-03-09 Thread Owen
It appears to be colord.

When the service is stopped KDE / Plasma is able to dictate the colour
profile to be used.

So KDE / Plasma 5.21 is unable to act as a client to colord and its
desires are being overridden by colord on a polled basis. Ubuntu / Gnome
is able to override what colord defaults to, but only as long as you're
using Ubuntu / Gnome.

So what is colord using as its default? This is different from the
default profile in KDE / Plasma. How is colord configured?

[Bug 1878814] [NEW] apparmor stays active even when the service is disabled

2020-05-15 Thread Owen
Public bug reported:

Trying to access a fresh install of MySQL, what a complete pain that
is!! I installed mysql-workbench-community from the app store. Attempts
to access the database with user root were rebuffed by an AppArmor error
about permissions.

Running aa-status I could see the app in the enforce category, so I made
many attempts to move it to complain, but this failed and I'll file a
bug report about that as well.

I decided to disable both the apparmor and ufw service.

However, the AppArmor permissions error dialog continue to appear and
it's not possible to access the database.

2020-07-10 Thread Owen
Using Ubuntu desktop and GDM3 the flickering doesn't occur (but I can't
log back in from lock). Using any other DM and DE the flickering occurs.

It appears unrelated to compositing as I've tried it with and without
compositing enabled.

It's weird as other reports of flickering seem to observing flickers at
all times while my issue only occurs on the lock screen and popups from
system tray icons.

[Bug 1597466] Re: dpkg giving warning about '/etc/lsb-release' version number not starting with a digit when there is no apparent problem in the file

2019-07-18 Thread Owen
Just seen this in 19.04, I'll look for it when I next do an update on
19.10. Could this be back-ported to 19.04?

[Bug 1781187] Re: Installation failed to install grub2

2018-07-18 Thread Owen
My point still stands however. The point I was raising wasn't that I was
using BIOS or EFI but rather the installation progressed through the
entire process and then left the system unbootable! This is surely
unacceptable; especially for someone who may be new to Linux / Ubuntu
and may be dual booting with some Windows setup who would then be left
with a potentially unbootable system and without the systems knowledge
to rectify the situation.

Traced it down to a hardware problem. There was dirt between the key's
rubber padding and the main board. For some reason, after cleaning the
'home' key the others sprang back into life.

2016-04-28 Thread owen
Hi, To all i am still seeing this error, I am a developer for a linux operating
system called: The Linux Schools Project. I maintain the client and i am seeing
this error when I try and boot the new version i am creating! My output from
cat /var/log/syslog | grep pipe, is the same as everyone elses. I hope this is
still active, i need to release this os in the next 2 weeks and this is the
only thing getting in the way.

[Bug 957397] [NEW] mouse freezes after upgrading to 3.0.0-16 on eee pc R105

2012-03-16 Thread owen
Public bug reported:

Title explains it. There is just a mouse cursor that does not move in

This fixed the problem for me too, as wifi is stable using wicd it definitely
seems to be a NetworkManager problem.

[Bug 1352886] [NEW] Resume from suspend fails after a long sleep

2014-08-05 Thread Owen
Public bug reported:

I'm on Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 with the standard 13.13.0-32 kernel.

The Suspend feature works, if the sleep is for a short time. For longer
duration's, shortest I've seen is 90 minutes, the machine will not
resume. When I say not resume, I mean the chassis fan LED will flash
once and nothing powers up. Due to the time, it is very difficult to
debug. From now on I am going to put the machine to sleep with the
'pm_trace' feature. Hopefully it will provide some useful feedback. I
have not attempted to hibernate for a length of time, though I presume
it to have the same problem.

In addition to this problem, after a failed resume, the reset button and
holding the power button does not work. I have to physically cut the
power.

Also, I installed the latest kernel, v3.16-rc7, but after logging on I
had no Desktop (only the wallpaper) and the keyboard did nothing. Being
new to linux I'm not sure how to do anything in text mode. I don't have
the time to step back through each version. If somebody knows which
version may work I can give it a try.

I also tried installing the 14.10 Desktop, but that version consumed so
much CPU it took 60 seconds to open a window and a full 20 minutes to
shut down. The Live version also behaved this way but I went ahead and
installed it anyway.

A few notes about my system:

Radeon HD6790 GPU. Problem Exists with both of their available drivers
(this includes their beta driver stated as being 14.04 friendly). I
cannot use the Ubuntu driver as the GPU fan runs at full speed and slows
the system down.

ASUS M4A78LT-LE mainboard, with latest 3.01 BIOS.

2 Kingston 4GB DDR3 modules.

I'm happy to perform a test and run any utilities, but like I said, I
don't have the time to be downloading/installing version after version
to find something that might work. The most recent pre-releases have not
worked. The current stable version runs smoothly, except for the suspend
issues.

+ Using the latest mainline kernel, although I'm not able to log into a Desktop

have added ALL modules to /etc/default/acpi-support and the problem persists.
+ The suspend command sudo sh -c "sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace;
pm-suspend" produced a Magic number but there was no accompanying "hash
matches" line.
+
+ The next step, and I need some help, is to modify the kernel as stated
+ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Reference/S3 by introducing some ASM
+ feedback into arch/x86/kernel/acpi/wakeup_64.S. If anybody is willing to
+ help, if anybody is even reading this, I would like to test using my
+ current kernel 3.13.0 and it's targeted for AMD64.

Ok, had a chance to test it.

Still getting this in dmesg:

A bit more digging into it.

./init /dev/serio_raw0 shows the device recognising all input fine for
all five fingers. It just seems unable to enable the device for use.

dmesg | egrep 'pnp | serio ' gives the following:
[0.272299] pnp 00:02: Plug and Play ACPI device, IDs PNP0b00 (active)
[0.272572] pnp 00:06: Plug and Play ACPI device, IDs FLT0101 SYN0a00

Scratching my head a touch.

[Bug 1373930] [NEW] apt-key fails silently

2014-09-25 Thread Owen
Public bug reported:

The apt-key command just returns to the command prompt with no output. I
am sure it's failing or crashing silently. The scenario is that I am
getting the pgdg-keyring /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) issue.
Following the instructions in a forum posting I moved all the files from
/etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d and re-ran apt-get update. This reported several
unverified keys. I then started adding the keys by running apt-key adv
--keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys foo and noticed
there was no output and it returned to the command prompt too quickly.
Also no keys were added. Unfortunately moving all the .gpg files back
into /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d has left me with three unverified keys;
http://apt.postgresql.org and two for http://ppa.launchpad.net.
apt.postgresql seemed to be the key that was causing the original pgdg-
keyring, but this could also be because it was the first in the list and
all the others would also fail.

[Bug 313228] Re: a program is still running but i want shut down anyway

2011-03-04 Thread Owen
Happening to me on maverick too, why "Unknown program" surely we can find
something slightly more useful about a process than this pointless message.
It happens to me after unity and everything else is closed down so I have no
way of finding what processes are even running. If I choose not to shut down
I'm left with an empty screen
