[Bug 267917] Re: Intrepid: PDF-printer not recognized by Okular

2008-11-26 Thread mosteo
Another reason to have print-to-PDF in okular is that some PDFs with
forms, if saved, lose the filled-in data in the forms. A way to keep a
PDF copy filled-in is to print to PDF.

It can be worked around by installing the cups-pdf (universe) package,
but I think that at first is a bit confusing. Sadly I don't think it's
supported to recommend or suggest a package in universe, which could be
otherwise a plausible proposition IMHO.

[Bug 139081] Re: (gutsy) pidgin exits when changing buddy icon

2009-06-03 Thread mosteo
I'm seeing again this bug in 9.04, Pidgin version 2.5.5. It doesn't
happen 100% of the time, it goes and comes intermitently.

$ apt-cache policy pidgin
pidgin:
  Installed: 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.1
  Candidate: 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.1

Procedure: click on the global buddy icon besides the status drop-down,
the selector opens, and on double-clicking the icon or clicking OK,
pidgin crashes. (Identical to that in pidgin-bugs #1857, which was
supposedly fixed in 2.4.0)

It happens now both online and offline, having a previous icon or
without one. I have enabled MSN, jabber, AIM, yahoo accounts.

The buddy icon I'm trying to select is a png. I got a backtrace after
installing debug symbols with gdb:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

I suspect that the particular PNG is not at fault, since I've used it

You're right, by jabber I meant XMPP gmail accounts.

Removing the AIM account (deleted entirely) made no change.

Anyway, I've got good news: I've pinpointed it to the 'mystatusbox'

with both checkboxes disabled.

I hope with this info you can reproduce it. I see however that the
plugin comes from universe.

[Bug 128357] Re: boinc does not idle with mouse movement

2008-10-17 Thread mosteo
I'm running 8.10 beta with latest updates and when Boinc is set to run
on user preferences, and said preferences said to run only on idle, it's
not honoring the setting.

In my case it starts running as soon as I change from 'suspend' to
'based on preferences', and does not stop neither by mouse nor keyboard
activity.

Both boinc-manager and boinc-client version is, according to synaptic,
6.2.12-1.

[Bug 293637] [NEW] High Xorg CPU usage with human theme

2008-11-04 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Computer is an atom 320 with 512MB RAM. Ubuntu 8.10. While not a
powerhorse, I'm not sure this is quite normal.

Setup is an idle xubuntu desktop with the CPU, Network and Memory
taskbar applets. These applets display usage by means of vertical
progress bars.

If in the xfce theme selector I choose either Human or HumanClearlooks
themes, Xorg CPU goes, according to top, to 30-50%. I note that these
themes animate progress bars continually (slanted darker bars that
move), but I don't know if this is actually related.

Chosing other theme (for example the default one), CPU drops to 1-2%.
Having compositor enabled or not does not make a noticeable difference
(perhaps a 1%).

Not entirely sure if this is a bug, but that large usage when idle, even
with this processor, seems suspicious to me.

[Bug 272484] [NEW] [toshiba laptop][hardy] brightness not honored after screen blank

2008-09-20 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Using Kubuntu here. Steps to reproduce:

1. Check your brightness setting in power manager (e.g. 100%)
2. Wait some time for powersave to blank the screen, or close the lid
(suspend/hibernate must be disabled).
3. Awake the screen, now the LCD brightness is very dim.
4. Power manager still reports a brightness of 100%
5. Move the brightness slider in power manager, or use the Fn-F7 shortcut;
brightness will jump to the given setting.

It happens both on battery and plugged in, in a first boot without
having suspended/hibernated previously, every time. Laptop is a toshiba
satellite u200. Please advise on what system information to report.

[Bug 255661] [NEW] Desktop ignores rotation in kubuntu hardy kde 4.1

2008-08-07 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: systemsettings-kde4

I have a rotating monitor, configured in portrait mode. I'm now using
kde 3.5.9, where rotation works, and have 4.1 installed in parallel.
When trying to configure the monitor rotation in system
settings->display, it ignores me. It asks to keep the new configuration,
so something is being tried, but nothing happens (i.e. the desktop is
still in landscape mode).

Furthermore, after rebooting, the rotation setting is reset to "no
rotation".

I've tried, using virtualbox, to see if it works in opensuse livecd
packaging of 4.1, but:

1) The systemsettings interface for monitor rotation is different (it uses some
radio buttons instead of combo boxes, and there's not the green scheme of the
available monitors like in kubuntu).
2) Even so, the options are grayed out so I can change them to test.

Please advice for further testing/pinpointing.

The package version is systemsettings-kde4 4:4.1.0-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa3

[Bug 258586] [NEW] Swami does not have a menu entry after installation

2008-08-16 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: swami

Using kubuntu with kde 3.5.9 here, but I guess this should apply to
freedesktop compliant desktops?

I installed, via adept_manager, qsynth and swami in the same batch.
After installation, QSynth properly appears under 'Multimedia', whereas
Swami can't be found. Since Swami is a GUI app, I would expect it to
show there.

I've also checked the list of installed files in adept, and I can't see
nothing that looks like a menu shortcut (albeit I'm no expert and I
don't know how it would like).

In summary, this is (if valid) a bug in the packaging and not in the
application proper.

2009-02-03 Thread mosteo
This is happening to me in kde4.2. However, sometimes the logout happens
minutes after requesting it. Even so, plasma settings are lost. I can't

settings are lost.

Not 100% repeatable, since I have other computer where this doesn't
happen. Both are Intrepid + kde4.2

Please instruct on what could be checked for further diagnosis.

[Bug 254468] Re: MASTER: momentary video garbage upon drawing new objects (particularly in KDE)

2009-01-21 Thread mosteo
It may be not a security bug in the sense of exploits, but it is a big
privacy leak. As has been pointed (and I experience this daily), locking
your session will fill the screen with garbage that is mostly your last
desktop snapshot. I even have the screensaver activated and it doesn't
get rid of this garbage.

Mouse is not detected.
Keyboard in a console (in this case within Yakuake) *is* detected.
Keyboard in other applications (e.g. firefox while I write this report or

[Bug 255661] Re: Desktop ignores rotation in kubuntu hardy kde 4.1

2009-03-22 Thread mosteo
Running Intrepid with 4.2.1

Upside down apparently works, but with an incredibly slow refresh. I can
actually see the windows repainting for like 0.5s each.

90 and 270 degree rotation don't work. I don't event get the small
window asking to keep or revert to the previous config, which I do get
when trying normal/upside down. I hit 'Apply' and simply nothing
happens. Contrarily, when switching to normal/upside there's a momentary
blanking.

This monitor isn't actually able to rotate. I don't know if monitors
report these capabilities and if that may be of relevance. I can try
tomorrow with an actually rotating monitor.

[Bug 255661] Re: Desktop ignores rotation in kubuntu hardy kde 4.1

2009-03-23 Thread mosteo
Same versions, another computer and monitor. This actually rotates.
Also, cards are different. Previous report was for some ATI, current is
for an integrated Intel 82Q35 using "intel" driver, everything
autodetected.

In this case, every rotation somewhat works without loss of speed.
There's a problem with the resolution on the 90/270 rotations. Instead
of switching to 1024x1280, I get a clipped desktop on the right side and
a black strip under the plasma panel. There's no scrolling like in
virtual screens larger that the actual resolution.

Mirroring along both axis (which I don't remember being there yesterday
in the other computer) doesn't work: No monitor blanking, no asking to
keep the new config and, of course, no mirroring.

[Bug 185311] Re: hardy, locking assertion failure, xorg/libsdl

2008-09-06 Thread mosteo
I hit this bug recently using the player/stage robot simulator [1].
Although the main GUI works okay, the amcl driver debug GUI will cause
player to crash with the familiar locking assertions. I think that
player/stage uses XCD through the C binding.

I know the above description is not totally helpful to someone not
familiar with player/stage. I could produce a small testcase
configuration after the 15th September if there is interest in
reproducing it. For now I just wanted to contribute an actual instance
in which this issue has been problematic, and not solvable with the
options offered in this thread. In my case, I had to use a Gutsy
installation within VirtualBox (which I already had for another
regression, this time in kdenlive) to workaround the issue.

I don't really know if the problem is in libxcd or in the use that
player makes of it, however.

[Bug 33861] Re: [Bug 33861] Re: notifier keeps notifying about available updates after fetching updates

2006-08-03 Thread mosteo
Must add that I solved this problem. It's a problem of permissions in
the folder containing the updates (that I don't remember which one is,
sorry). Giving read permissions to group solved it for me.

I suppose some package update could ensure the correct permissions and
be done with this problem.

Re: [Bug 58424] Re: Can't calculate the upgrade with unofficial mesa/compiz packages

In the two systems I have this has happened to me when upgrading: the former
video drivers are kept (under packages named xorg-xserver-driver-). If
you manually select the package xorg-xserver-video-all (note the change from
driver to video), all old versions are deinstalled, new ones installed, and
X resume working flawlessly.

I can confirm this problem, also running Edgy fully updates as of

[Bug 63388] Re: Repeating broken sound after Dapper -> Edgy beta update

I have installed Kubuntu Edgy from scratch and the problem happens too
with the fresh install. I've found this post:

that describes the same problem. Since kdm doesn't make a sound when
presenting the login screen, the problem is unnoticed until after login.

Please advice on what hardware reports would be meaningful.

[Bug 154407] [gutsy] kde rotate desktop no longer correct

2007-10-19 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

I have a rotating TFT from samsung that I was using in portrait mode in
feisty. After upgrade to gutsy, when the rotation is applied after
login, a black band is seen at bottom, and to the right side of image is
clipped. In other words, the rotation is applied but without adjusting
the resolution change from 1240x1024 to 1024x1240, resulting in excess
black on bottom and clipped right at 1024.

I was hit initially by bug 137307. In this case, the options to rotate
the desktop are missing from the peripherals/monitor control panel.
After deinstalling Xgl, they appear, but the two portrait configurations
exhibit the problem.

Same experience here with both intel and i810 drivers. Card is a 82865G.
Also solved with apt-get remove xserver-xgl.

The computer was almost unusable due to this bug, scrolling a window in
the browser would take lots of time and 100% CPU, so I'd say this may be
a big issue for non-technical people hitting it.

[Bug 137307] Re: Xgl very slow, even when running only metacity (Intel i810)

2007-10-20 Thread mosteo
Then I understand that either

a) something else pulled Xgl in when upgrading.
b) it was previously installed and only exhibited the problem after the upgrade.

On second thinking, a) cannot be since removing Xgl didn't pull out
anything else due to dependencies.

In truth, I don't remember explicitly installing Xgl but I couldn't rule
it out either. Is there some way to inspect the lifetime of a package in
the system? First install, reason, things like that (note that I have
already removed it)? My machine started with Dapper.

As a side note, if b) is what happened, should someone be notified about
it? Is it normal that Xgl has no effect in feisty and cripples X in
gutsy for this card?

[Bug 173031] acronym.sty in texlive-latex-extra requires suffix.sty in texlive-humanities

2007-11-30 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texlive-latex-extra

After upgrading to gutsy, I've noticed that the latex package
acronym.sty (found in texlive-latex-extra) doesn't compile when used in
a tex file. It reports a missing suffix.sty that can be found in ubuntu
package texlive-humanities.

Example minimal latex file that should fail if texlive-humanities is not
installed:

[Bug 102099] Re: toshiba laptop brightness not adjustable after hibernation

2007-11-18 Thread mosteo
It just has happened again to me with an up-to-date gutsy. Though, I'm
not sure if the brightness was at minimum; it seemed stuck at the
setting prior to hibernation. This would be a difference, in the past it
was always stuck at the minimum setting.

I've checked that the closing-the-lid trick still works.

[Bug 63388] Re: Repeating broken sound after Dapper -> Edgy beta update

2007-02-24 Thread mosteo
Here is the requested information, but

* I no longer have an edgy installation in the computer showing this
problem. I'm reporting the results of the live install CD, which also
exhibits the same problem. Launching amarok and playing the default
welcome ogg starts an interrupted sequence of "hello..."

Attached is the output of the debug commands.

I would like to try and up-to-date edgy installation to see if the
problem has been corrected, but I am not sure when I could spare time
for this.

I will also try with the latest feisty snapshot.

[Bug 102099] toshiba lapop brightness not adjustable after hibernation

2007-04-02 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

Laptop is a toshiba satellite u200.

Distro is kubuntu feisty beta with kernel

# uname -a
Linux 2.6.20-13-generic #2 SMP Sun Mar 25 00:21:25 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

It doesn't happen every time, but when it does:

Laptop brightness is at minimum after resuming the hibernation. The
Fn-f6/f7 keys do something as the screen blinks, but brightness remains
at minimum. The command line tool toshset doesn't work either, in the
sense that brightness doesn't change, but it doesn't report failure
either. The slider in guidance-power-manager also has no effect. Either
of the three methods works when the screen is in 'normal' state (i.e.
when it responds to adjustments after a normal boot).

Please advice on how to provide extra debugging information.

[Bug 90771] Re: Suspend to ram very slow and not reliable on Toshiba U200

2007-04-05 Thread mosteo
Another sample: my toshiba satellite u200-111 takes ~9 minutes to
suspend, about 1 minute to come back. At this moment its more time
effective to use hibernate, which works ok.

2.6.20-13-generic #2 SMP Sun Mar 25 00:21:25 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

But I should note that, contrary to what the first poster reported,
suspension worked ok for me in a fresh edgy install.

[Bug 55844] Re: xorg.conf completely locks machine

2006-10-01 Thread mosteo
Same situation here. The lock-up doesn't happen every time, though. I
moved from Dapper to Edgy using the apt-get dist-upgrade route.

I've tried to dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, no noticeable differences:
sometimes it reaches the kdm login screen, sometimes complete lock-up.

After this, I've replaced the "ati" driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf by the
"vesa" one and it hasn't hung again, but just tried a few times.

[Bug 63390] Network down after Dapper -> Edgy beta update when kde session starts

2006-10-01 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Updated using the apt-get route.

Network works normally until some point after log in. Some apps in the
kde desktop are able to make connections (kgmailcheck, the weather
kicker applet...), so I guess it is something being loaded during
session start. Network ceases to work at some point before the desktop
and apps are completely loaded. I have been unable to pinpoint the
culprit.

ifconfig shows the same info before and after desktop launching. Doing
an ifdown/ifup shows no DHCP answers. Also a connection to the router
admin page in the local subnet is impossible.

Shutting down the X subsystem makes no difference, I haven't managed to
bring the network up again after it dies.

[Bug 63389] Re: Error upgrading to 6.10 from 6.06 i386

2006-10-01 Thread mosteo
Not sure if this is related, but in my upgrade I ended with broken X
because this package was installed:

(1) xserver-xorg-driver-ati

This package apparently prevented the installation of

(2) xserver-xorg-video-ati

apt-get was happy keeping (1), no brokenness or abnormal thing was
reported after the update.

It seems the driver in (1) had a version incompatibility with the xorg
server. Manually requesting install of (2) caused removal of (1) and X
working again. My first impression is that xserver-xorg-driver-*
shouldn't be in the repository anymore but for some reason it is still
there. Admittedly, it is a wild idea, I'm not experienced in this.

[Bug 548992] Re: Wireless connection frequently drops [deauthenticating by local choice (reason=3)]

2010-05-03 Thread mosteo
I too got broken wireless upon upgrade to lucid. It was an USB dongle
using driver rt73usb. Simptoms were the same deauthenticating barrage of
messages, and mangled essid.

Following the clue of a previous reporter, I saw that I too had network-
manager installed, albeit I use wicd. Killing the process (sudo service
network-manager stop) didn't work. Uninstalling the package, however,
did it even without rebooting.

[Bug 576502] [NEW] "wl" module missing symbol lib80211_get_crypto_ops in -pae kernels

2010-05-06 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bcmwl-kernel-source

I have a broadcomm wireless integrated card in a laptop. To get it to
work I need the "wl" module, provided by the bcmwl-kernel-source (from
restricted), and compiled with dkms. The version I currently have is

# apt-cache policy bcmwl-kernel-source
bcmwl-kernel-source:
  Installed: 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu3

This works as expected with the regular -generic series kernels, but at
least in the last four of five -generic-pae ones (also in karmic),
module is built but fails to load with

# modprobe wl
FATAL: Error inserting wl
(/lib/modules/2.6.32-22-generic-pae/updates/dkms/wl.ko): Unknown symbol in
module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

and in dmesg:

# dmesg | tail -2
[ 2795.255929] wl: disagrees about version of symbol lib80211_get_crypto_ops
[ 2795.255938] wl: Unknown symbol lib80211_get_crypto_ops

I have tried removing/purging and reinstalling the offending package,
without success.

So, in the end, I have to choose between wireless and 2GB of ram or no
wireless and 4GB of ram.

[Bug 1327772] [NEW] Early boot crash/reboot DH57JG motherboard without 'nomodeset'

2014-06-08 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Since several ubuntu versions (at least since 12.10), this motherboard
has required extra parameters to successfully boot. Early on it was
'nolapic_timer'. Nowadays, it is 'nomodeset'. Without it, the boot
sequence either panics or reboots (much more often the latter) after a
few seconds (between 3 and 7 in my anecdotal observations).

This time around I snapped a picture of the panic information.

[Bug 1327772] Re: [Intel DH57JG] Early boot crash/reboot without 'nomodeset'

2014-06-30 Thread mosteo
Christopher, I upgraded this machine from the previous LTS version. I'm
afraid I don't remember if I was already using nomodeset. What I'm sure
of is that I had unity graphics acceleration, which I'm now unable to
get with the latest kernel when using nomodeset (it seems both things
are related, I've read elsewhere, at least in 14.04).

I've just switched to an old 3.2 kernel without nomodeset, and it has
booted properly the two times I have tested it (and runs with
acceleration).

[Bug 1152186] [NEW] possible fuse crash and inaccessible mounted filesystem

2013-03-07 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

I use heavily encfs and sshfs filesystems. Since 12.10 I observe
regularly that mounted filesystems go awry but remain mounted, and files
within them are not accessible. The obvious symptom is listing the
folder in which they're mounted. In the following example an encfs is
mounted in a folder named 'dropbox':

$ ls -lF
ls: cannot access dropbox: Transport endpoint is not connected
total 16K
d? ? ?? ?? dropbox/
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jano jano 937 mar 6 10:39 fixlinks*

There is the dropbox folder and the the regular file fixlinks, for
comparison, which is in the same folder.

Sometimes the folder can be unmounted simply with sudo umount ,
others it is necessary to use -l (lazy unmount).

I suspected encfs could be responsible, until I saw this with a sshfs
filesystem. Still, I've been able to locate any log or crash message to
confirm that fuse is the culprit. Any indications on how to debug this
further are welcome.

This tends to happen once a day, but it seems that heavy access (e.g.,
doing a find in the root of the fs) tends to favor its occurrence.

I'm sorry if this has been already reported but searching for
'd?' seems futile in google.

[Bug 925309] Re: unkillable process consuming 100% cpu time

2012-02-10 Thread mosteo
I have too observed this behavior with disk-heavy processes, and also
having home encrypted. The troublesome part is that it has come and gone
since at least natty (see my report #665211), without any conditions
(that I can identify) changing. After several months of happiness, I'm
again intermittently getting it in another computer with the 'deluged'
process.

My old report was marked invalid since it apparently went away and I
couldn't really narrow down the cause. With this I mean that I wouldn't
be totally confident after a few tests that the bug is fixed (although
I hope so!), without having identified the cause.

[Bug 913787] Re: Defunct process consumes all CPU, init does not reap

2012-02-10 Thread mosteo
I have right now a deluged process behaving exactly as this (100% cpu,
unkillable, becomes zombie when killed and keeps eating 100% cpu, using
an encrypted filesystem).

Possibly duplicates: #925309 #665211 (this last one was reported by me)
Not so sure: #838061

Quite nasty bug, since it forces a reboot.

Here is the info I could gather about the runaway process. Note how it
goes from running to zombie:

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2012-03-12 Thread mosteo
According to a report today in bug 925309, the kernel part of this might
have been fixed, making the processes killable. Also, if bug 913787 is
correct, ecryptfs might have a hand on these 100% CPU processes
(although not necessarily in the totem case, where I agree with comment
#88).

[Bug 712103] Re: unlocking dialog doesn't show

2011-07-10 Thread mosteo
Same as #5, but haven't yet tried to kill processes, I had always used
the sudo service gdm restart route.

Also 11.04 up to date with classic desktop, random screensaver and
monitor suspend.

[Bug 651806] Re: bzr becomes unkillable with -9

2010-10-22 Thread mosteo
I'm seeing this with another process (amule). The process ends stuck at
100% cpu, can't be killed by root with -9. The process is sometimes in R
and sometimes in D state. This has happened to me with an up-to-date
Lucid (kernel 32-25) and a fresh Maverick install.

Next time this happens to me I'll try the 'ps l' thing.

[Bug 665211] [NEW] Unresponsive process cannot be killed (sudo kill -9)

2010-10-22 Thread mosteo
Public bug reported:

Installed lucid (fully upgraded) in a new computer. There's a program
(amule) that consistently hangs up after some time (typically one or two
hours). When this happens, its window becomes unresponsive and any
attempts to kill it are fruitless. It also typically uses 100% cpu
according to top. Killing the window with xkill closes the windows but
the process remains.

I have this same setup in an older computer where this does not happen,
so I suspect that the new one being an i5 could have something to do.
