[Bug 306489] [NEW] Serious power management problems

2008-12-09 Thread epicurea
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu Ibex on a desktop with Compiz on 'normal' effects.
There are some serious issues with power management and I am not sure if
this is due to my setup or something inherent in Ubuntu. These issues
may be summarized as under:

1. The system hangs if left on without activity for a period of time. I
do not know how long it takes for this to happen but I usually find this
happens when I return to my desk after about an hour. I have moved the
sliders in the power management section to 'never' for both 'put
computer to sleep' and 'put display to sleep' and this still happens.
The symptoms are that the screen goes blank and various lights on the
keyboard start flashing. The system cannot be revived by attempting to
restart X (ctrl-alt-backspace) or any other way. A full hard reboot is
required.

2. Emerging from suspend results in some part of the system going bust.
This either affects the sound or the networking. I guess this is just
the same problem as other have reported on various laptop configurations
but I thought I should report it occurring on a desktop as well.

[Bug 275451] Re: nfs mounts specified in fstab is not mounted on boot.

2009-06-03 Thread epicurea
Thierry Carrez: Sorry for the disappearing act - have been very busy.
The lines in /etc/network/interfaces used to read:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Following ThomasNovin's suggestion, I backed up the original file and
replaced its contents with:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Rebooting after this does not fix the problem. I cannot setup a static
IP and must use DHCP as this machine is at work.

Any ideas?

[Bug 195122] Re: Compiz Scale: Windows not reachable after scaled view

2009-06-02 Thread epicurea
I can confirm the same problem. Looks somewhat similar to Bug #127445
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz-fusion-plugins-
extra/+bug/127445) but that was fixed a while ago. I am using Jaunty and
unchecking the Show desktop option within Scale will "fix" this - by
which I mean the windows no longer go awol. However, the potentially
useful behaviour of directly accessing the desktop by clicking on it is
of course no longer possible.

[Bug 275451] Re: nfs mounts specified in fstab is not mounted on boot.

2009-02-27 Thread epicurea
Same problem. This problem has only emerged since Intrepid as I never
had this problem with the previous versions. Sudo mount -a works after
boot every time, so presumably the network is not available during boot.
I have tried re-installing Intrepid but this has not helped.

2009-03-19 Thread epicurea
Forgive my complete ignorance, but I am not sure what you mean by
NetworkManager managed network. The NetworkManager applet has been
operational for as far back as I can remember and as I said, nothing has
changed from my end (from Feisty onwards) except the OS version. In
other words, mounting from /etc/fstab worked right up until Intrepid
came along.

Seems to be working ok as of today - possibly some updates fixed it,
though I wouldn't know which.

[Bug 134080] Re: CIFS: Navigating directories in DFS shares buggy

2009-08-12 Thread epicurea
I think I am having a similar problem:

I am trying to mount 3 remote shares via /etc/fstab using:
//server-name/share /smb/somefolder smbfs
auto,credentials=smbcredentials,uid=XXX,gid=XXX,umask=000 0 0

Two of these mount just fine while a 3rd does not, causing nautilus to
hang and an ls on /smb to give a segmentation fault. It is possible that
this is a DFS share - as the other two share points (which work) are on
the same server.

Using nautilus to load the problematic share using:
smb://server-name/share/folder
authenticates and works just fine.

Using Intrepid and all available updates as of today.

Thanks.

[Bug 275451] Re: nfs mounts specified in fstab is not mounted on boot.

2009-08-13 Thread epicurea
#MxxCon - I was pretty skeptical myself after all it has not been
working for a while and I have not really changed anything much. Except
perhaps for explicitly defining the location of my credentials file (it
was in home but it may be possible it was not picking it up at boot). So
just to be clear, my fstab entries now look like the following:

//server.name/share /smb/somefolder smbfs
auto,credentials=/home/username/smbcredentials,uid=XXX,gid=XXX,umask=000
0 0

Whereas previously they looked like:

//server.name/share /smb/somefolder smbfs
auto,credentials=smbcredentials,uid=XXX,gid=XXX,umask=000 0 0

But I can confirm that it is definitely working now.

[Bug 494097] Re: Firefox crashes with Flash video

2010-01-22 Thread epicurea
Micah,

While I do not support emarkay's tone and heckling (at Bug #481413), I
can confirm that an Apport crash handler does not appear when Firefox
crashes. I have enabled the single instance through force_start as you
suggested but this also did not help.

In addition, I can now confirm that this same problem exists with
Google's Chrome so is clearly not a Firefox problem.

The behaviour is strange as it shows 'deterioration'. Coming back to
work in the new year everything seemed to be fine - I could play flash
videos without trouble. Then Firefox got buggy and I moved to Chrome and
that was ok for a few days until now. I was reading elsewhere that this
could be due to the conflict with pulse.

Anyway, I have changed the status of thsi to 'new' as Apport is simply
not appearing.

Thanks

[Bug 494097] [NEW] Firefox crashes with Flash video

2009-12-08 Thread epicurea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

This problem has appeared recently though I cannot guess what might have
triggered it. I have been running Karmic since it's release and did not
encounter this problem with any of the previous incarnations on the same
machine. Briefly:

1. Loading YouTube or any other flash based video causes a crash. This
has happened both while the video was playing (i.e. at some random point
within the clip) and as soon as play is hit on a video. Now it happens
as soon as you hit play.

2. I have re-installed flash and also deleted my firefox profile. The
second 'fix' worked for a little while but the problem quickly re-
appeared.

Do let me know if you need anymore information. All apps are up-to-date
as is the system.

[Bug 481001] [NEW] File transfer speeds ramp down after fast start

2009-11-11 Thread epicurea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

There are similar bugs to this one but as far as I am aware this has not been
reported - so apologies if I have missed something. Other users have also
reported a similar problem here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1306333&page=1

I start a file/folder transfer process (~7GB) from my hard drive to a
USB drive - in this instance a 32GB USB 2.0 Transcend stick. The
transfer starts at a fast 25-28 Mbps but quickly (within a minute) drops
steadily until it reaches around 10 Mbps or so. If this is normal (I
don't see why) Nautilus should be configured to warn the user.

A very similar problem occurs on a transfer across my local network to
an SMB location. A file transfer process (typically 7-8 GB) will start
at around 5 Mbps but quickly and steadily ramp down to around 1Mbps.

Interestingly, in the past I have at times (but not very often) seen the
speed go up again for a while (say to 1.5 or 1.8 mbps) only to drop off
down to 1mbps or so. The transfer rates I am quoting are not consistent
across events but just some typical numbers I have noticed. Some times
it is less some times it is more - but the trend is always the same:
starts fast but quickly ramps down to a much more sedate (and therefore
annoying) pace.

I have filed this as a problem with nautilus, but it may be a wider
problem with the kernel as some of the respondents on the above link
appear to suggest. I have not duplicated this on the terminal but can
try if such confirmation is required.
