Description: reports bugs in the Debian distribution
reportbug is a tool designed to make the reporting of bugs in Debian
and derived distributions relatively painless. Its features include:
 .
  * Integration with the mutt, af, and mh/nmh mail readers.
  * Access to outstanding bug reports to make it easier to identify
whether problems have already been reported.
  * Automatic checking for newer versions of packages.
  * Optional automatic verification of integrity of packages via debsums.
  * Support for following-up on outstanding reports.
  * Optional PGP/GnuPG integration.
 .
reportbug is designed to be used on systems with an installed mail
transport agent, like exim or sendmail; however, you can edit the
configuration file and send reports using any available mail server.
 .
This package also includes the "querybts" script for browsing the
 Debian bug tracking system.
Homepage: http://alioth.debian.org/projects/reportbug/
Python-Version: current, >= 2.4
Bugs: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Origin: Ubuntu

I suggest a note be added that states "in ubuntu the default behaviour is to
email ubuntu-users mailing list" (as per the man page) and not debian.

   - Configure reportbug to deliver mail to your ISP's smarthost or

I just did Dustin. I reproduced this bug -> ubuntu 8.10 server

a bug that has NEVER BEEN FIXED.

[Bug 8978] Re: Grub - Error 21 returned

2008-12-04 Thread db
I would like to propose the following solution. Ubuntu should in future
releases, when it detects that the disk you are installing it on is not
the primary disk (the first disk that gets booted off) the installer
should either prompt the user for what to do or add an entry to boot
ubuntu using the existing grub (edit menu.lst etc.). If this is not
a nice solution for the desktop installation, then it should be added to
the server and alternative installation disk.

This seems rather trivial.

Your sharp eyes did indeed find a bad entry in the sources.list file.

I corrected the entry to read as you suggested. I then tried the update
which failed with the same message as above.

I've attached the sources.list file. All I have changed is what you
noted above.

Also, can I update this thread directly from my mail program? Or do i
have to log onto this site?

thanks for your help,

[Bug 320819] Re: package system-tools-backends 2.6.0-1ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-01-28 Thread db
Yeah i get it too.

It is easy to reproduce. Simply 1. install ubuntu 8.10. 2. reboot after
it is done. 3. upgrade -> 4. done... you will hit the error that this
user has got right now. The issue is that dpkg / the package is not
being told to "stop" -> so it can "start" the newer version. so when
the user reboots it is still a problem.

I recommend that the initrd script be fixed immediately to include the case
where the package is already installed and running.

[Bug 386935] [NEW] Missing dep / wrong dep

2009-06-14 Thread db
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mtop

package mtop 0.6.6-1.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation
script returned error exit status 1
.. BUG -> it tries during installation to connect to the mysql server on
the local machine. This behavior is different to that suggested by the package
/ its deps. NOTE: i do not have the mysql server installed! (the full thing.. i
only have the core).

Suggestion re fix.can the package be altered to either depend on
mysql-server OR not attempt to connect to a server on the local machine
during installation. If no server is active on the local machine... it
may be that the user wants to use it on a remote machine and not have to
_install_ mysql server on the local machine.

[Bug 225231] Re: vim should not be aliased to vim-tiny

2009-05-28 Thread db
After installing all of the vim packages on a new 9.04 install, i was
stuck with vim-tiny unless i called the correct one manually. I had to
remove the vim package so as to default to the correct one... please fix
this bug.

-> behaviour install vim packages to get full vim. result find out
that it is still using tiny vim.

Expected result (as per my debian lenny installation). install vim-full/
other packages / runtime / gtk /blah -> start using vim full / complete
as "vim".

Hal Lamborn Yeah i was about to comment that yesterday when installed
debian lenny again i noticed it automatically selects the ide drive,
DESPITE the fact that I have told bios to boot my new sata drive. So i
think it is a failure in the installation to test the drive order ?...
or bioses ? i 'm not sure i think if someone with a lot more
technological knowledge can help this should be sorted fairly quickly.

[Bug 8978] Re: Grub - Error 21 returned

2009-02-23 Thread db
Oh and i wanted to provide more information about both installs->
8.10 doesn't work for installation (no idea why) ... So i used ubuntu 8.04 set
up an encrypted lvm. I did the same on debian lenny (rc 1 disk ). Both
installations resulted in grub installing to the wrong disk. However, this time
both could boot.

I think, if any installer takes a copy of the mbr, saves it. Writes a
new mbr and then tests if it works, upon failing restores the old mbr
and prompts the user could be a good solution.

In 8.10, this machine (a nec with a 6600go graphics card) no error message was

[Bug 342990] [NEW] stopping the dbus daemon logs user out and disabled my keyboard and mouse.

2009-03-14 Thread db
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

Stopping the dbus daemon logs user out and disabled my keyboard and
mouse. This is in ubuntu jaunty, alpha5. I am not sure if this has been
fixed or looked into for alpha6. However, reliance on _one_ system
daemon for continued operation of the entire system is not a good idea,
when that daemon is not critical. Arguing that dbus isn't ever meant to
be stopped isn't a solution. Dbus like other computer software is likely
to have bugs, some of these might result in dbus being terminated.

If you wish to test this, simply login (to gnome), and at a terminal (i used
the gnome-terminal) go sudo /etc/init.d/dbus stop.

[Bug 332336] Re: ubuntu doesn't shutdown or restart

2009-03-14 Thread db
omarr that seems fairly odd...as usplash is really a mask with some
user input abilities to hide the boot text...

As you only edited the grub boot menu, I believe that no new initrd was
generated. This might be a bug in usplash. However, I am not the person to
continue examining this bug. I think if you could provide some information
about the system, that might be helpful for a usplash developer.
//-
If you could answer / respond to the following.

   1. A detailed description of the problem, including any error message or
special visual phenomenon you might notice.
   2.

The file created by this command in a terminal : sudo lspci -vvnn >
lspci-vvnn.txt
   3.

The file created by this command in a terminal : cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
> menu.lst
   4.

The file created by this command in a terminal : cat /etc/usplash.conf >
usplash.conf
   5.

The file created by this command in a terminal : uname -a > uname-a.txt
   6. A photo of the problem is often very useful.

[Bug 342990] Re: stopping the dbus daemon logs user out and disabled my keyboard and mouse.

2009-03-16 Thread db
So now the stability of _ANY_ ubuntu system (desktop) is dependant on
the kernel and dbus ?

I consider this is a _REAL_ bug. I may as well use windows if i want a system
that is made so that when _ONE_ semi-important thing crashes the whole system
goes. I know other distros don't have this problem. How about instead of
marking bugs that affect real users as "won't fix" some one looks at what can
be done ? mmh ?

[Bug 342990] Re: stopping the dbus daemon logs user out and disabled my keyboard and mouse.

2009-03-17 Thread db
Ok let me make it more clear. The bug isn't that stopping dbus logs a
desktop user out. The bug is that the desktop computer is now USELESS.
You have to reboot it (if sshing isn't an option). This is a regression
from ubuntu 8.10. It is a real bug. I can stop hal on my debian lenny
system (no logout), not sure about 8.10 atm , will check later. Point is
the system can still run without dbus. If dbus is that important then if
dbus ever stops running, it should be relaunched no ?

Isn't that a real fix ?
if dbus ever stops running then start it up again...

specific to pidgin. However, this might be 'expected' behaviour (as
pidgin is using dbus...?)

2009-02-15 Thread db
Note: i do not observe this behavior on debian lenny. (also running
gnome). However, i have network manager off. Perhaps it is network
manager and not dbus that is causing pidgin to crash (note i am not
running network-manager on debian). I will test later on ubuntu 8.10
(network manager disabled and or not compiling pidgin with network
manager support ).

2009-02-07 Thread db
i just tried to install ubuntu server 8.10. You cannot skip the
networking stage and then set the time. I assume as it wants to use an
ntp server. Can this be altered so that one can still set the time
without setting up networking ?

2009-02-20 Thread db
Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order
to determine if this issue is usplash related, please boot your computer
with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the
issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, follow these steps:

1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3. Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
4. At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
5. Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

[Bug 326655] Re: computer freezes after sitting idle & only the keyboard lights flash

2009-02-20 Thread db
I think i have seen this bug myself. If you could provide some more information.
//-
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 326981] Re: system freezes, hard reset needed!!!

2009-02-20 Thread db
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the
resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!
