[Bug 212316] Re: print selection option causes firefox to crash
I just wanted to update this thread. (Sorry I lost contact for a while.) My system has been updated through the Ubuntu Hardy repositories and I now have Firefox 3.0.1 (3.0.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2). Everything seems to be working perfectly, my problems as described above have seemed to disappear. (Hopefully PJSingh5000's problems have disappeared as well.) I appreciate everyone's diligence in making Firefox such an excellent browser. Thanks. [Bug 305726] [NEW] Disk Writer only burns if you save ISO first
Public bug reported: System type: Dell Studio 1535 Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Desktop) When trying to back up my hard drive before shipping the computer back to Dell (proprietary wireless card), I was unable to burn the DVD-R. When I clicked "Burn to Disk" after using the drag/drop method, it said to insert a blank or re-writable disk. However, after saving an ISO and double-clicking it, the burn worked without problems. Not sure if this is Gnome, Ubuntu, Nautilus, or something else. I'm not sure what specific type of drive it is, but I know it's a DVD+/-RW slot-load tray. [Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly
I definitely agree the current Nautilus view is far too complicated. It should be pared down, and should take up less screen real estate. There should be one menu bar and one tool bar, that is it. Another row of chrome is acceptable to show tabs. Anything above this is guaranteed to be too much. I believe firmly that the nautilus file browser should appear quite similar to a web browser. I agree with Vadim above when he says that users have problems with Web Browsers too, but the reason for the similarity is not ease of use per se, it's consistency. Users who are somewhat familiar using a web browser should be able to operate the file browser in a similar fashion. To that end, I like the proposed mockups, they are a definite improvement. The UP button should go, there is no reason for it to exist with the breadcrumbs there. The zoom buttons should definitely move to the status bar if they are going to be present at all (I think this point is debatable). One thing that has always bothered me about the Nautilus UI is that the breadcrumbs don't have enough visual cohesion. They feel like regular buttons strewn about; there's not much to convey that it's the folder hierarchy in breadcrumbs form. In my opinion, if the buttons were smaller and grouped inside something that looks like a browser location bar, usability would improve drastically as it'd be far more obvious what their use is. -- Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386150 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 363868] Re: BIOS does not provide ACPI _PSS objects in a way that Linux understands, Foxconn A7GM-S 2.0
One work-around I have found to this was alluded to in an earlier email in t his thread... It worked for me when this happens. If on booting your Ubuntu 9.04 release that you've installed on Bootable USB... If during the boot process it gets to the Ubuntu "splash" screen showing the left/right orange/red flash and seems to stop... pull the USB out for just a second and reinsert it. For those USB's where I was getting the error mentioned... this fixed it. My guess is that the bug is either a timing related bug or an interrupt issue. * Timing bug could be differences in single core, dual core, quad core my machine this happens on is a quad core... on dual core laptop I haven't see the problem. * If its an IRQ type of problem then pulling the USB flash and reinserting it would make some sort of state change which maybe that starts up the process again..In either case, for me, there was a workaround. After pulling then reinserting the USB the Ubuntu "splash" screen would start to show the final displays prior to Ubuntu being fully functional. Ok tried turning off ACPI but no difference. However, using Jaunty 9.04 as the installed bootable USB flash drive image... I can now get it to boot IF during the splash screen I briefly pull the USB flash out and then reinsert it. If I don't pull the flash and reinsert... the boot fails into the busy box with the ACPI error message. [Bug 281167] [NEW] vncviewer crashes on startup when using xmonad
Public bug reported: When using xmonad (with gnome in my case), vncviewer crashes with the failed assertion: vncviewer: TXScrollbar.cxx:47: void TXScrollbar::set(int, int, int, bool): Assertion `limit_ > 0 && len_ >= 0 && len_ <= limit_' failed. This can be fixed by replacing the assertion in TXScrollbar::set with if (len_ > limit_) len_ = limit_; such that TXScrollbar::set looks like this void TXScrollbar::set(int limit_, int start_, int len_, bool vert) { // This assertion fails under certain window managers. // assert(limit_ > 0 && len_ >= 0 && len_ <= limit_); if (len_ > limit_) len_ = limit_; if (start_ < 0) start_ = 0; if (start_ > limit_ - len_) start_ = limit_ - len_; if (limit[vert] != limit_ || start[vert] != start_ || len[vert] != len_) { limit[vert] = limit_; start[vert] = start_; len[vert] = len_; paint(); } } I hope this patch is helpful. best regards, Brian Amberg [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 8.04 Release:8.04 ** Affects: vnc4 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- vncviewer crashes on startup when using xmonad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281167 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 128026] Re: FreeImage jpeg library conflicts with system jpeg library
Hi Everyone, Getting FreeImage working was a freakin nightmare. But I thougt I'd leave a trail for those who follow. If your production environment happens to be Ubuntu Gutsy like me then you might find this useful: I got it up and going decently at first, gif's worked, but not jpegs. I eventually tracked down this link, which talks about some conflict with the jpeg library: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freeimage/+bug/128026 This had the solution: http://pastie.org/pastes/104754 I don't know who put it there but it saved my bacon. FYI, there were some other things i had to do to get that working. For example, I had to change line 8 to this: apt-get source libjpeg6b I also had to install some tools along the way as I got errors, such as: sudo apt-get install liburi-perl sudo apt-get install fakeroot Also, after running line 23 I got an error like this: Now signing changes and any dsc files... signfile freeimage_3.9.3-3ubuntu1.dsc Brian Armstrong gpg: skipped "Brian Armstrong ": secret key not available gpg: [stdin]: clearsign failed: secret key not available debsign: gpg error occurred! Aborting debuild: fatal error at line 1174: running debsign failed debuild returned 29 Couldn't run 'debuild -i\.git/ -I.git' Which was only resolved by going and reading about gpg: http://www.quantumlab.net/pine_privacy_guard/howto_setup_gpg.html I had to go through the steps of "gpg --gen-key" and create a passphrase with that exact name and info "Brian Armstrong ". Before line 23 would run. I have no idea what any of this does...personally I hate anything that invovles a "make install" to get it working (mostly because it never seems to work right). I can't believe it's really this hard to get this working. Anyway, thanks to ImageScience for a cool program...I know it's not your fault FreeImage is so difficult. I am having a nearly identical bug, short of one detail, so I'm assuming it's the same thing. Above attached screenshot is accurate. The difference for me is that this only happens immediately after anything using mplayer (such as totem) is launched. After that, and until the next time the operating system is restarted, anything that is not Flash experiences these symptoms. For example, if I launch VLC and open a video, it appears normal. If I launch Totem on the video, its colors are severely offset. If I then (without restarting) launch VLC on this same file a second time, VLC has the same offset as Totem. Identical results from running mplayer from the command line, and it affects all files until the following restart. A bit annoying because my media controls don't work on VLC... [Bug 357988] [NEW] some applications missing window border
Public bug reported: Today I updated my Asus EEE that was running 8.10 to the 9.04 beta. I didn't do a clean install, but an upgrade through the update manager. [Bug 398246] [NEW] Network browser only shows hostname, not share type / protocol
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus The network browser in Nautilus will adequately locate the available shares on your local network. However, it displays each one with a generic "server on the network" icon, along with the hostname that the share resides on. This is problematic if a single host has multiple services enabled. In the screenshot I have uploaded, you can see my default Network view, which shows 4 available shares, all located on the same host ("sluice"). By double-clicking on each, I was able to determine that: - the first "sluice" is SFTP - the second "sluice" is also SFTP. Why is this shown twice? - the third "sluice" is FTP - the fourth "SLUICE" is SMB, although there are no actual shares available. In case it wasn't clear from the original comment, the bug/annoyance I am reporting is that unless you actually double-click on one of these identically-named shares, you have no way of knowing HOW each share is attached (sftp, ftp, smb, etc). And because different resources are often made available over different protocols, this information is as important as the hostname itself when the user is trying to locate data (which is the whole point of connecting to the network). -- Network browser only shows hostname, not share type / protocol https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398246 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 403183] [NEW] CSS font-size and line-height set to different units -> missing text
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 Some pages have problems with the text rendering in Firefox 3.0.11 on Ubuntu 9.04. The text seems to disappear, but what is actually happening is that its layout is terribly wrong. In one case there was a huge space between lines, in another case the text was offset from where it belonged. See: http://www.abcc.ncifcrf.gov/ for one page that has this problem (on that page the menu on the left is missing--it ends up at the bottom of the page). I think I narrowed this down to some CSS using the WebDeveloper add-in. The offending sections on two different sites had a font-size declaration in one unit and a line-height declaration in a different unit. For example: .class { font-size: 12pt; line-height: 20px; } or one based on the above site: .class { font: bold 9pt/30px Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif, Geneva, Verdana, ms sans serif; } Here the font-size = 9pt and the line-height = 30px. If I changed that (using WebDeveloper) to 9px/30px or to 9pt/30pt the layout was improved. I also had this problem in Shiretoko (firefox-3.5). If I disable the site's CSS (View > Page Style > No Style) the problem disappears (though of course the layout is totally wrong), but if I go to Preferences > Content > Fonts & Colors > Advanced and uncheck "Allow pages to choose their own fonts..." I still get the problem. I do not think I had this problem in Windows with Firefox 3.0, and Opera on Ubuntu does not have this problem on the same pages. I will try to load screenshots of the above page from both Opera and Firefox. [Bug 303619] Re: rdesktop no sound on local computer
I am having a problem with this also but looking at the rdesktop man page and multiple examples I am still puzzled about the -r option. many examples show its use as rdesktop -rsound no space btwn -r and sound man page shows a space? I am running SeamlessRDP on a Windows 2003 server and doing rdesktop -rsound -A -s "c:\seamlessrdp\seamlessrdpshell.exe iexplore.bat" the iexplore.bat use is something I picked up where if you create a .bat file on windows for each app you want to execute you can run the actual program from the batch file... followed by the windows Logoff command. That keeps the Windows RDP from locking you out because you've used up your sessions. Everything works but still no sound. I did try substituting Cendio's sound driver (from their downloadable server CD) on the Windows side but that's still not made a difference. I am still not sure where the problem lies (with windows seamlessrdp side or with Linux rdesktop side). Sound does work on the Linux side tho' when browsing to the same web site (I just test by running browser to cnn.com and picking one of their short news video's). -- rdesktop no sound on local computer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I did just prove to myself that the man page is correct. rdesktop -r sound (with a space) is correct and the various web examples w/out one are wrong so always verify what you see on the web still holds true -- rdesktop no sound on local computer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 400423] [NEW] Duplicate entries in address book
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird I am getting multiple address entries in Thunderbird. By default, my school's e-mail service puts display names in ALL CAPS, while many users opt to change display names to use proper grammar. This is automatically entered into Thunderbird's address book as 2 separate entries. So, for example, John Doe sends an e-mail from work with the display name "John Doe" and then from home using the display name "JOHN DOE". Both have the same e-mail address of do...@osu.edu, but both are added as separate entries in Thunderbird. A reasonable fix, I believe, would be to treat all letters as lowercase when determining if a contact already exists, so while JOHN DOE will (or may, at user's option) appear in as JOHN DOE, the address book will treat the name, as well as the name "John Doe", as "john doe" and recognize that the entry already exists. Unfortunately I do not know enough about the Thunderbird source code to make this modification so somebody else will have to do it. [Bug 403183] Re: CSS font-size and line-height set to different units -> missing text
I updated to Firefox 3.0.12, and the problem continued (I also had the same problem in 3.5). However, since you had no problem on a clean profile, I tried it in a guest session and the problem had disappeared! I had thought I checked this with layout.css.dpi = -1 (default value) but I double-checked and found that when it was set back to the default value my problem disappeared. So it seems this was caused by layout.css.dpi = 1. I guess that makes sense--the problem was with CSS rendering, and the cause was the CSS layout option. I guess I thought about checking that option but never did. I'm not sure if this is still a bug with the CSS layout, but I will keep that option set to default. I seem to remember having incorrect menu text sizes/window decorations when I first installed, which was fixed by the layout.css.dpi option, but it is now working fine. firefox-3.0: Installed: 3.0.12+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1 Candidate: 3.0.12+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1 Version table: *** 3.0.12+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty-updates/main Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com jaunty-security/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.0.8+nobinonly-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages -- CSS font-size and line-height set to different units -> missing text https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/403183 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
