Shawe, thanks for your nice work. Unfortunately the tarball you attached is mostly empty, save for the script itself. The etc/ and usr/ folders in the archive are empty, so it fails. Oh, and for people having problems trying to get nvclock to install, you need the following: automake and xorg-server-dev, both are available in the repositories. The nvclock command works on the Vaio FZ-31M with a 8400M GT. Thanks everyone, especially mikes! [Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics
Hey I tried the new script. It's a lot better, not perfect, but much much better, so thanks a lot for your work! Here are the problems: – changing the brightness is not super responsive, totally usable, but not as quick as your previous version – the visual feedback doesn't quite work… it doesn't update quite right – gnome power manager doesn't seem to be aware of the brightness capability as the screen does not dim when the AC adapter is unplugged. [Bug 304401] [NEW] selecting a custom application in media preferences locks up
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus In the media tab of the preferences, selecting the "open with other application" option from the dropdown menu for any of the formats (audio CD, DVD, etc.) and then choosing the "use a custom command" and "browse" leads to a file browser at /usr/bin that doesn't respond. Even though the caret stil blinks, no buttons work. One can not close it through the cancel button or the cross, but closing the parent window (the "add application" one) will close it without any problems. I can confirm it unfortunately doesn't work for the Vaio VGN FZ31M. [Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics
I may be wrong, but I have the feeling that the newest Nvidia drivers (177.80, which is only the latest ubuntu packaged version in fact) may have changed something and made your modifications ineffective. The fn+F5-6 don't work anymore, I have to enter the nvclock commands manually. (which is still usable of course) The fn shortcuts now segfault, as seen in dmesg output: nvclock[5526]: segfault at 0 ip b7dde2c3 sp bf9f4cfc error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so[b7d67000+158000] The only other segfault I could find via google with error 4 in libc-2.8.90.so was also an nvidia driver bug report, so that's that. I'll try removing your mods to see if it changes anything Shawe. Also, it would be good if we could have someone in charge, be it of Nvidia integration or of acpi, to give us some heads up as to what to do to get this bugfix working and taken in consideration (and pardon my lack of knowledge concerning linux bug squishing). -- No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/95444 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout
On an up to date version of Lucid Lynx beta I still have this problem. I have a text description of my layout in the notification area, but it stays on "Fra" when I switch between different versions of the French layout (in my case azerty and bépo dvorak), rendering it useless as looking at the indicator won't tell me layout the keyboard is in. If I add another language layout (say USA) then the indicatior does switch between one language and the other, going from Fra to USA, but still fails to go from Fra to Fra2 to USA. [Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout
I'm sorry Oded but I disagree, I've been using the keyboard indicator applet for quite some time prior to moving to Lucid beta, and I had "Fra" when on my default French setting and "Fra²" when on my other French setting. I agree the indicator didn't say "Fra (alternative)" and "Fra (bepo)", but it did give me an indication of the fact that separate variants of the French keyboard were in use. In Karmic, and Jaunty etc. before that, clicking on the applet switched from Fra to Fra² and then to USA if I had a third layout installed. I'm 99% sure about this. I even had a bug every now and then back then where the switching pattern use to become Fra > Fra² > ?? > ??² > Fra > … So it would circulate through all the available layouts regardless of language. But anyway, I think we all agree that the indicator needs to tell us about what actual layout is in use, and not just what language the layout is designed for. And if, from what I gather, the indication was supposed to be done graphically (via a country flag I suppose), there should be an option to have the basic Fra or USA letters, and not a flag. Not all of us want to see a brightly coloured item in our gnome panels. :) -- New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531173 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 460749] [NEW] Audio Convert script does not include codecs as dependencies or recommendations
Public bug reported: This is a nice package, simple enough to install, but unusable by less technically aware people. [Bug 601056] [NEW] Gnome-panel elements (main menu, launchers) disappear or become white after resume
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel First off, sorry if this is duplicate of an other bug; I couldn't see any bug that describe this problem precisely. After resuming (usually after a few suspend / resume cycles), or after coming out of theç screensaver (later after a resume), elements of gnome-panel are not displayed, and others are replaced (or covered) by a fully white zone. The missing elements are the main gnome menu and the launchers (shortcuts to Firefox for instance). The white elements are the window changer and the notification area (NOT indicator applet). All my other elements are there as usual, that means all my other applets including CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor, Clock, Show Desktop, Indicator Applet, Me Menu and Indicator Applet Session, Worskspace Switcher, Garbage Bin Applet, System Monitor and Tomboy. However, the elements hidden under the white zones (Window changer and stuff in the notification area) react to mouse-over and left- and right- clicks. So they are just hidden, not unusable. On the other hand, the panel won't react to right-clicks. Killing gnome-panel doesn't always solve the issue, as sometimes the process simply restarts and cleans up, but sometimes hangs around as a zombie process, requiring to close the session and restart gnome to clean up. This bug isn't that easily triggered and reproducible, basically “it happens sometimes”™. Let me know if I can provide more information. Safe mode didn't help solve the issue, BUT using a new profile (firefox -P) did. Following http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox I went through the procedure to fix my profile: “Profile issues / To fix the problem in the original profile” I tried the suggestions in order, and removed several items from my profile directory, until the suggestion on the 4th line worked: removing the prefs.js made my Firefox stable again. This wiped my preferences but so far, my Firefox version hasn't crashed in hours. I must have changed a setting that caused this version of Firefox to crash. If I have the courage, I'll try to find out what one. So anyway, I hope this can help some of you. If needed, I can share the incriminating prefs.js file (after some sanitizing). -- Firefox hangs and has becoming very slow. [Bug 668867] Re: Firefox hangs and has becoming very slow. It also crashes Firefox has become virtually unuasble
I don't know if this is the proper bug report, but since I started updating Lucid to Maverick (so before the upgrade was even complete) Firefox has started freezing for no apparent reason. I usually have a lot (a lot… ~90) tabs open, and also have a bunch of extensions, but some of these are designed to make the amount of tab usable (such as Bar Tab which unloads tabs, so right now even with about 100 tabs memory consumption is only 150 MB). After some time, a few minutes or tens of minutes, Firefox hangs completely, not answering anything. CPU usage goes up to a little under 100% and stays there for as long as I don't kill the process. I tried starting in safe mode but the same thing happened, which would lead me to think that the add-ons are not to blame. Maybe one of my tabs is ? But as most of them aren't even loaded, it seems a little weird. And the freeze doesn't seem to be triggered by anything in particular, it usually happens when I'm just srcolling down a page, or writing in a text box such as this one. I've tried starting Firefox from the terminal for extra info but it doesn't output anything significant unfortunetaly. Next step might be to install the Mozilla build of Firefox from the Ubuntuzilla project to see if the problem appears in that version of Firefox. Otherwise I'd be happy to test out whatever is needed to solve this. Firefox is one of my main tools, I don't really want to have to stop using it. -- Firefox hangs and has becoming very slow. [Bug 668867] Re: Firefox hangs and has becoming very slow. It also crashes Firefox has become virtually unuasble
More details… I started Firefox with "Firefox -console". This got me a few lines of: ###!!! [Child][RPCChannel] Error: Channel error: cannot send/recv and one instance of this one: ###!!! [RPCChannel][Child][RPCChannel.cpp:159] Assertion (!ProcessingSyncMessage()) failed. violation of sync handler invariant (triggered by rpc) RPCChannel 'backtrace': (yes, that's where it ends) Also, when FF hangs and I'm watching a Youtube (Flash) video, the Flash player stays responsive (for a while) when the rest of FF has already moved to “I'm completely stuck” land. Even another Flash video player lower on the page kept giving cues it was working (shimmer effect on the “play” arrow when I hovered over it) and the mouse cursor kept on changing from the regular pointer to the hand one gets when hovering over links. [Bug 602301] [NEW] Account settings dialog windo w size insufficient, hides “Manage Identities “ button by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird This is on Thunderbird 3, Ubuntu packaged version : Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100423 Lightning/1.0b1 Thunderbird/3.0.4 lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 apt-cache policy thunderbird thunderbird: Installed: 3.0.4+nobinonly-0ubuntu4 Candidate: 3.0.4+nobinonly-0ubuntu4 The default size for the Account Settings window (Edit > Account Settings) is too small to display the “Manage Identities” button. When one selects an account to edit (I have a few), the basic settings are shown, down to “Outgoing SMTP server … ”, but the “Manage Identities” button is hidden, and no scrollbar appears to let me know another option is available. If I didn't know it existed and was looking for it, there would be nothing showing me there are more options further down the window. I thought it may be related to the fact that I'm using Lightning, but I tried disabling Lightning and the problem remains. In fact, I started in safe mode, and the issue is the same. [Bug 615779] [NEW] Thunderbird menus and dialog boxes are blank
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release:10.04 apt-cache policy thunderbird Installed: 3.0.6+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.04.1 Since updating to Lucid Lynx yesterday, Thunderbird won't load properly: the windows are mostly blank (reading pane), the submenus and the dialog boxes are blank (the initial "system integration" box for instance) and the menus buttons don't appear. Apart from this, Thunderbird loads properly, downloads mail etc. This is a on a two screen setup (laptop + external monitor). Interestingly, on the external monitor, the Thunderbird window is completely corrupted, on the laptop's screen, only the menus are blank and the folder/account list and message list are readable. This bug seems very likely related to bugs #564011 and #555382, though in this case, the problem appears *without* any visual effects enabled (System > Preferences > Appearance / Visual Effects set to "None" and Compositing disabled in gconf-editor > apps > Metacity / General). Also, this could have something to do with the infamous GMA500 "Poulsbo" graphics the laptop uses, the drivers of which are know for their high level of shittiness. Firefox is fine, no issues than I can see of feel. SeaMonkey shows the same problem, starting with the "Import Wizard" dialog box which appears completely blank on the external monitor and incomplete when displayed on the laptop's screen (radio buttons don't react, no "OK" button, only Cancel), and the "usual" window drawing issues, missing menus, lack of submenus. Quick update, I tried installing Thunderbird from the Mozilla Daily PPA (version 3.0.7~hg20100808r4894+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1~lucid I believe), that didn't solve anything, the same problems are still there. I've also installed 3.1rc2 from Mozilla's website (as suggested by Lucazade on the forums), and that works, no visual artifacts and I could install Lightning.
