[Bug 378514] [NEW] install script reports "the script did not pass --debconf-ok to ucf..."

2009-05-19 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tiger

Ubuntu 9.04
Linux aardvark 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009
x86_64 GNU/Linux

When installing tiger via synaptic, this message appeared:

Setting up tiger (1:3.2.2-8ubuntu2) ...
*** WARNING: ucf was run from a maintainer script that uses debconf, but
 the script did not pass --debconf-ok to ucf. The maintainer
 script should be fixed to not stop debconf before calling ucf,
 and pass it this parameter. For now, ucf will revert to using
 old-style, non-debconf prompting. Ugh!

 Please inform the package maintainer about this problem.

[Bug 422258] [NEW] /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/11daptup needs --nocolor

2009-08-31 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: daptup

/usr/bin/daptup, when run from a cron job, batch/at, APT::Update or any
other method that leaves $TERM undefined will fail with "tput: No value
for $TERM and no -T specified", now that color output is the default.

The "--nocolor" option should be added to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/11daptup:

APT::Update::Pre-Invoke { "/usr/bin/daptup --pre"; };
APT::Update::Post-Invoke { "/usr/bin/daptup --post"; };

should be

APT::Update::Pre-Invoke { "/usr/bin/daptup --pre --nocolor"; };
APT::Update::Post-Invoke { "/usr/bin/daptup --post --nocolor"; };

[Bug 588036] [NEW] firefox fills disk in .xsession-errors

2010-05-31 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox fills my $HOME/.xsession-errors file with

(firefox-bin:4350): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

messages, but the only trouble ahead that I've seen is when firefox uses
up all the space in my home partition by writing

(firefox-bin:4350): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

to my .xsession-errors file repeatedly.

$ cat ./xsession.summary.cmd
#!/bin/bash
# Summarize my .xsession-errors file

# count repeated lines, sort by repeat count

[Bug 1693607] [NEW] No HOME environment var, USER, SHELL, others not set

2017-05-25 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Shortly after I logged in, I started a gnome-terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T. I was
surprised to see the message:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo ".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

I was further surprised to see that /usr/bin/script started /bin/sh, not
/bin/bash.

So far, I've noticed (after moving my .profile and .bashrc aside) that
the environment provided is only:

DISPLAY=:0
PWD=/home/w3
SHLVL=1
TERM=xterm-256color
VTE_VERSION=4205
WINDOWID=67108874

No HOME, SHELL, USER, ...

A gnome-terminal started later gets no sudo complaints, and these environment
variables:

[Bug 1711930] [NEW] system-config-printer-udev enables all queues

2017-08-20 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

I have multiple CUPS queues set up, many pointing to the same physical
printer, with different forms loaded. My queues are named "3hole",
"envelope", "legal", "labels", after the paper I load before I
cupsenable the printer.

Since changing the paper in my printer is a manual operation, I tend to
accumulate print requests in, say, the "envelope" queue until I have the
time to switch to envelopes.

Whenever system-config-printer-udev runs, it enables ALL the queues,
which causes everything to print on whatever paper is loaded, probably
the wrong paper.

I'm not sure how system-config-printer-udev can detect the RIGHT queue
to start - maybe by manual configuration? Should it detect multuiple
queues pointing to the same printer and issue an error message instead?

[Bug 1648981] [NEW] Useless warning popup

2016-12-10 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

I have four disks attached to my system (Ububntu 16.04.1 LTS). smartmontools

This popup has only 1 bit of information (I should worry about one or
more disks). It should have more information (which disk, old status/new
status, ...)

[Bug 1485168] [NEW] pthread_kill(0, 0) Segmentation fault rather than ESRCH

2015-08-14 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

The simple program:

#include
int
main (int arcg, char *argv[])
{
  pthread_kill((pthread_t)0,0);
  return 0;
}

Gets "Segmentation fault". The man page says it should return ESRCH. Looking at
the eglibc-2.19 source I found:

In ./nptl/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/pthread_sigqueue.c
 27
 29 int
 30 pthread_sigqueue (threadid, signo, value)
 31  pthread_t threadid;
 32  int signo;
 33  const union sigval value;
 34 {
 35 #ifdef __NR_rt_tgsigqueueinfo
 36   struct pthread *pd = (struct pthread *) threadid;
 37
 38 /* Make sure the descriptor is valid. */
 39   if (DEBUGGING_P && INVALID_TD_P (pd))
 40 /* Not a valid thread handle.  */
 41 return ESRCH;
 42

and in ./nptl/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/pthread_kill.c
 27 int
 28 __pthread_kill (threadid, signo)
 29  pthread_t threadid;
 30  int signo;
 31 {
 32   struct pthread *pd = (struct pthread *) threadid;
 33
 34 /* Make sure the descriptor is valid. */
 35   if (DEBUGGING_P && INVALID_TD_P (pd))
 36 /* Not a valid thread handle.  */
 37 return ESRCH;
 38

and in ./ports/sysdeps/unix/bsd/bsd4.4/kfreebsd/fbtl/pthread_kill.c
 27 int
 28 __pthread_kill (threadid, signo)
 29  pthread_t threadid;
 30  int signo;
 31 {
 32   struct pthread *pd = (struct pthread *) threadid;
 33
 34 /* Make sure the descriptor is valid. */
 35   if (DEBUGGING_P && INVALID_TD_P (pd))
 36 /* Not a valid thread handle.  */
 37 return ESRCH;
 38

In all of these cases, the "DEBUGGING_P &&" causes the "INVALID_TD_P
(pd)" test to not be generated, since DEBUGGING_P is #defined as 0. We
need to do the test!

The Ubuntu man page for pthread_kill says:

If sig is 0, then no signal is sent, but error checking is still
performed; this can be used to check for the existence of a thread ID.

[Bug 1103615] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 do-release-upgrade won't upgrade

2013-01-25 Thread WaltSullivan
I AM misconfigured! Run update-manager, click "Settings", click the
"Updates" tab, and adjust the "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version:"
Choices are Never/For long-term support versions/For any new version.
Changes take effect on an update-manager restart..

Not a bug, just my misunderstanding.

[Bug 1049463] [NEW] update-manager doesn't update "last updated"

[Bug 1049463] Re: update-manager doesn't update "last updated"

2012-09-12 Thread WaltSullivan
By doing "sudo apt-get update -V", I saw the error message:

W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is
not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error:
http://deb.torproject.org oneiric InRelease: The following signatures
were invalid: KEYEXPIRED 1346668560 KEYEXPIRED 1346668560 KEYEXPIRED
1346668560 KEYEXPIRED 1346668560

When I #'d the torproject lines I had in /etc/apt/sources.list, _my_
problem went away. YMMV

This is NOT an update-manager problem (except for not showing the error
message).

[Bug 904093] [NEW] lpq reports Owner "(null)" and File(s) "untitled"

2011-12-13 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

I'm running CUPS on localhost. The `lpq` command reports the owner of
the job as "(null)" and the File(s) in the job as "untitled". In
addition to being wrong, these values are incorrect.

[Bug 921432] [NEW] CUPS hangs printing to HP Deskjet 6988

2012-01-24 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Printing either "PostScript document text conforming DSC level 3.0" or
:"PDF document, version 1.5" can leave the network-attached printer
blinking (thinks it's receiving data), the CUPS printer hung at "Status:
Processing page 1...".

I have to stop CUPS, power-cycle the printer, then start CUPS and try to
print something else.

This only started recently (Christmas 2011?)

[Bug 907471] [NEW] Bad default installation harms Update Manager

2011-12-21 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Since I installed apt-listchanges, when I run update-manager, update-
manager seems to hang (pause without end) displaying its "Applying
changes" window.

When I opened the "Details", I was shown a single line of text "(END)
/tmp/".

After expanding the window, I found it was apt-listchange's output, put
through apt-listchange's pager, which was waiting for my input.

This violates the Principle of Least Surprise.

Prior to my installation of apt-listchanges, update-manager ran without
any keyboard input, after installing apt-listchanges, update-manager
does not.

[Bug 1158132] [NEW] soffice locks up

2013-03-20 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Whenever I start "soffice" (by typing "soffice", by clicking on the
"LibreOffice Writer" icon, or double-clicking on a file and choosing
"Open with Libre Office writer"), I see the splash screen, and my entire
session locks up. Not even the clock in the upper right hand corner of
Unity gets updated.

The only I can get anything back is to Ctrl-Alt-F1 and "pkill -9 gnome-
session", then login again.

[Bug 904093] Re: lpq reports Owner "(null)" and File(s) "untitled"

2012-03-24 Thread WaltSullivan
I've noticed that the HPLIP Status popup displays the correct queue,
user and job name.

I edited my /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, and changed all 4 lines from
"JobPrivate default" to "JobPrivate all", then did "sudo service
cups restart", and the problem remained. "lpq" displayed

$ lpq
Deskjet is ready and printing
RankOwner   Job File(s) Total Size
1st (null)  1098untitled0 bytes

Not Fixed.

I'd like to understand how it's a "feature". Could you point me to your
source for that idea? It still looks like a bug from here.

[Bug 951939] [NEW] evolution crashed when I repeatedly enabled/disabled an account

2012-03-10 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly  valgrind -v --tool=memcheck
--leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=$DIR/$LOG
/usr/bin/evolution

I opened "Evolution Preferences", and idly clicked rapidly, multiple
times, in the "Enable" box for one of my accounts (a local mail spool)
to enable,disable,enable,disable,... and Evolution vanished!

I was able to recreate the crash under the valgrind command above. The
log is attached. The output from the execution is:

[Bug 886755] [NEW] Authentication fails during password expiry warning period

2011-11-06 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

I have password aging enabled, and am within the password expiry warning
period. When I try to install software, I'm prompted for my password.
When I enter my password, I see a "Your password will expire in 4 days"
message, and get re-prompted, until authentication fails, and I can't
install the software. My password should be valid for this purpose even
with the expiry warning.

My system is:

[Bug 794768] [NEW] Greeter displays password expiry message, then vanishes

2011-06-08 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have password aging enabled, and it's getting close to password change
time. When I login, the greeter displays the " Warning: your password
will expire in 6 days" message, then vanishes before I can read the
message. It should persist for a few seconds so I can read the message
(if any message has been posted).

[Bug 705753] [NEW] Multiple popups

2011-01-20 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

When I restart firefox and wander off, when I return I have multiple
(I've actually witnessed 6, 9 and 15) "Password Required" popups, all
asking me for the password for the System Security Device. Since these
popups appear on any open screen, they confuse me.

How can I tell which of my many open (and restored) tabs want access to
my stored passwords?

How can I tell which popup to answer? I don't want to type my password
multiple times.

When I try to reduce the number of popups to one by clicking Cancel, I
find I must guess the right order to Cancel them. If I click Cancel out-
of-order it's ignored.

What's the upper limit on the number of popups asking for the same
password?

Why aren't the "Please enter the password for the System Security Device"
popups
numbered,
timestamped,
tagged with a URL, or,
unique?
