[Bug 292214] Re: Xinerama broken since intrepid on MGA

2010-05-06 Thread Tom Adams
I spoke a little too soon. Things *mostly* work, but there's an
irritating bug I've hit 3 times where the mouse cursor rapidly flashes
and the mouse locks up. It looks as though it's confused about which
monitor it's on and some of the flashes are on the far right of my
leftmost monitor and some on the far left of my right monitor. In
earlier release I've seen a couple other quirks where there's some
confusion about which area is part of which monitor, but this is teh
first time there's a lock up.

I've attached my /var/log/Xorg.0.log. There're some errors in there
that might be informative if (unlike me) you actually know what you're
doing. Here's the bit that caught my attention:

[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

[Bug 292214] Re: Xinerama broken since intrepid on MGA

2010-05-06 Thread Tom Adams
I also had this problem on lucid. Applying the patches automatically
failed, but I was able to manually apply the patches and I'm up and
running with two monitors. I repackaged patch-3 as it worked on my
system and have attached that patch. I've had to fight this across
three upgrades. It sure would be nice if this was accepted.

to apply:
sudo apt-get source xserver-xorg-video-mga
cd xserver-xorg-video-mga-1.4.11.dfsg
./configure
make (to be sure it compiles)
cd src
apply the patch
patch < lucid_mga_dual.patch
cd ..
make
sudo cp mga_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/mga_drv.so

** Patch added: "patch of mga.h and mga_driver.c"

[Bug 764161] [NEW] Mahjongg has two tilesets labelled "postmodern"

2011-04-17 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

In Ubuntu, Mahjongg has two tilesets labelled "postmodern" which look
identical except one has the GNOME logo on some tiles, and the other has
the Ubuntu logo.

Either the names should be changed to something like "postmodern
(GNOME)", "postmodern (Ubuntu)", or the GNOME tile set should be removed
from the Ubuntu package.

Could you take a screenshot the next time you come across this bug?

Depending on the tile theme you use, the flower and season tiles may
look similar to each other, or very different. This may be what's
happening.

[Bug 731172] Re: unable to display Ubuntu Unicode symbol in urxvt

Thanks for reporting this.

The character U+E0FF is reserved for private use. If you set urxvt's

rest of the OS. Otherwise, it will use the fallback glyph from the font
it's configured to use.

[Bug 733669] Re: Too many terminals

2011-03-11 Thread Tom Adams
Thanks for reporting this. I agree it's confusing (especially since I
don't recognise two of the Terminals' icons) so I'm going to mark it
"confirmed".

How did you envision this being solved? Just adding the name of the
executable (i.e. "gnome-terminal", "urxvt") beneath the "human-friendly"
name would work, I think?

[Bug 733882] [NEW] Several packages are named exactly the same

2011-03-12 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

This is an off-shoot of bug #733669.

When using unity-place-applications, unlike the Ubuntu Software Center,
you can search for "Terminal" and there are 3 applications all called
"Terminal" with no way to differentiate apart from the icons. In version
0.2.38, it also shows uninstalled applications from the Software Center
making the problem worse.

The proposal is that all applications named exactly the same (gnome-
terminal, vala-terminal, and terminal.app) should have their names
changed. Or at least the two Terminals that aren't installed by default.

[Bug 733669] Re: Too many terminals

2011-03-12 Thread Tom Adams
I just this minute upgraded. Ubuntu Software Center integration must
have been added in 0.2.38. Gosh that is confusing. It wouldn't be so bad
if they were under a heading saying "uninstalled applications".

I made a new bug for the 3 "Terminal"s being named exactly the same: bug
#733882.

This bug can continue to be about uninstalled applications being
integrated confusingly into unity-place-applications.

[Bug 728796] [NEW] Selecting "Make Caps Lock an additional Ctrl" causes caps-lock to be permanently on

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

2. Enable "Make Caps Lock an additional Ctrl"

Enabling this option should disable capslock otherwise the user will

[Bug 729815] [NEW] Edge resistance seems to occur at the edge of the shadow, not at the edge of the window

2011-03-05 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After disabling the "Grid" (#716313), when using "Snapping Windows", the
edge resistance causes the window to resist between the edge of the
screen and the edge of the _shadow_ of the window.

I would have expected (and preferred) the shadow to be ignored when
snapping, and the resistance to be between the edge of the screen and
the edge of the window. It seems that when windows are originally placed
by compiz, they will go right into the corner as would be expected.

Using 11.04, apport-collect data to follow.

[Bug 730219] [NEW] Restoring from maximized, Chromium gets some WM decoration

2011-03-06 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chromium

In Unity in 11.04, Chromium 9.0.597.107,
1. Open Chromium
2. Wrench icon > Personal Stuff > Set "Hide system title bar and use compact
borders"
3. Maximise Chromium
4. Restore Chromium

Actual behaviour: Chromium now has both its own WM buttons and minimal
border, and Unity/compiz's WM decorations.

Expected behaviour: Chromium's no-wm-decorations option should be
respected and when restored it should be in the state it was before it
was maximized.

[Bug 730218] [NEW] Maximising Chromium in Unity causes there to be two sets of buttons in the top-left

2011-03-06 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chromium

In Unity in 11.04, Chromium 9.0.597.107,
1. Open Chromium
2. Wrench icon > Personal Stuff > Set "Hide system title bar and use compact

3. Maximise Chromium

Actual behaviour: Chromium now has both its own [x][_][o] buttons inside
its window, and Unity also provides its own set of [x][_][o] buttons
just above Chromium's.

Expected behaviour: Not sure - but I'm leaning towards Chromium's
buttons disappearing while it's maximised and Unity's appearing.

[Bug 687281] Re: viminfo can leak sensitive information

2011-03-06 Thread Tom Adams
Thanks for taking the time to report this.

My opinion is that because the list of files that could contain
passwords would be so vast, this is something best left up to the
individual user.

Here's something you can add to your vimrc which will disable viminfo
and undofile for a list of files (though it's not perfect - if you do
vim wp-config.php other-file.php, viminfo will be disabled for the
second file too):

if has("autocmd")
  autocmd BufNewFile,BufRead wp-config.php,.my.cnf,my-password-file setl
viminfo= noundofile
endif

[Bug 738732] Re: Name already exisits on your network in "Your computer's name" in "Who are you" page even when this is random text

2011-04-05 Thread Tom Adams
I'm installing Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 beta 1 in a VM, and it tells me
"ubuntu" "already exists on the network". Unlike other people, "ubuntu2"
works. Where is this information coming from? No computer on this
network except some inactive VMs are called "ubuntu".

It's useful to know if any other computers have called themselves
"ubuntu", but other machines on the network should _never_ be able to
prevent the installation from proceeding. This is a denial of service
flaw.

[Bug 792636] Re: Power section no longer allows configuration of "when the lid is closed" action in Oneiric

2011-09-06 Thread Tom Adams
> Is there any benefit to NOT allowing users to configure this behaviour
in the system configuration tools that ship with Ubuntu?

Here's a blog post about the issue from the point of view of a GNOME 3
developer: http://afaikblog.wordpress.com/2011/02/03/on-laptop-lids-and-
power-settings/

Their reasoning for this change is: "The vast majority of people do not
like lots of settings"

While I can understand that philosophy, the fact is that there ARE lots
of settings available and GNOME 3 is just making them harder to get to.

[Bug 790925] [NEW] Empathy won't reconnect an account

Public bug reported:

Every day, I find my Gmail account sitting in a red bar at the top of

[Bug 792636] [NEW] Power section no longer allows configuration of "when the lid is closed" action in Oneiric

2011-06-03 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In Natty I was able to configure what happens when the laptop lid was
closed. Now that option doesn't exist in the power settings.

I tried to set the following gconf options to "nothing", but they had no
immediate effect:
/apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_battery
/apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_ac

It would be helpful to know a temporary workaround as I close my laptop
all the time but I never suspend/hibernate it.

[Bug 793006] [NEW] Liberation Sans Bold's hinting looks bad on lowercase u

2011-06-04 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ttf-liberation

See the attached image: both are Liberation Sans Bold 18px. The one on
the top is ttf-liberation 1.05.2.20091019-4 (natty's version), and the
bottom is 1.06.0.20100721-1 (oneiric's version).

The hinting on the lowercase u makes it appear very thin and out-of-
place in 1.06 while the 1.05 version looks fine.

The browser rendering the text was chromium-browser version
13.0.782.0~svn20110601r87409-0ubuntu1~ucd1~natty from
https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily/+archive/ppa. I can also reproduce
in firefox version 5.0~b3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu1.

The URL used was:
data:text/html,The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy
dog

2011-06-05 Thread Tom Adams
Sam:

bzr bd failed. It complains about /usr/lib/cdbs/strip-schema.pl not
existing (cdbs is installed), but I think what killed it was /usr/share

Is this designed to build on natty or oneiric? I'm using oneiric.

[Bug 779318] [NEW] screen session reacts badly when logging out/in of desktop

2011-05-07 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

1. Install Ubuntu with encrypted home.
2. Login.
3. Open a terminal, and start a screen session (screen).
4. Log out.
5. Login.
6. Resume the screen session (screen -RD).
7. Open a new screen (^Ac).

What happens (the new screen opens zsh in /):
22:50 holizz@koma:/%

What should happen (the new screen opens zsh in ~):
22:50 holizz@koma:~%

For some reason, logging out and logging back in again, causes new
screens opened to open in / rather than ~. I presume this has something
to do with the ecryptfs volume being unmounted when you log out.

[Bug 786630] [NEW] XML entities in usernames are inconsistently escaped

2011-05-22 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When a contact uses characters outside the ASCII range, they appear as
their escaped XML entities throughout most parts of the UI, including:
the contact list, the title bar, the tab. But inside the chat window, it
appears as the intended characters.

In this case, the user's name is "大神", and the corresponding XML
character entity references are "大神".

[Bug 712964] Re: chromium not following UTF-8

2011-04-26 Thread Tom Adams
This shows mojibake (broken text) for me too. In my settings I have
changed the default encoding ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8.

The problem in this case is that the author of the Web site has not
declared a text encoding ("character set"). Unfortunately, there's
nothing that can be fixed in Chromium - the bug is with the Web site.

As a workaround until somebody invents something better than HTTP, you
can press the wrench, go to Tools > Encoding > Auto Detect.

[Bug 762399] [NEW] Blinking cursor can be deactivated but only through gconf

2011-04-15 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

The blinking of the cursor in GNOME Terminal can be deactivated using
gconf (that was fixed in #188732). Though there is still the issue of
there being no UI to do this in the profile preferences, which was also
mentioned in that bug, but the bug was "Fix Released", and I figured
this needed its own report.

The patch found on the GNOME bug didn't quite work, but with some small
modifications, it now works.
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~holizz/+junk/gnome-terminal/revision/78

I will send the diff upstream, but they seem very reticent about fixing
the bug and there's been no activity in 2 years, so let's not hold our
breath.

[Bug 763601] [NEW] Chromium cannot make itself the default

2011-04-17 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chromium-browser

On a fresh install,
1. Install Chromium
2. Click "Make Chromium My Default Browser" in preferences
3. Open a link from gnome-terminal (right-click, Open Link)

The link gets opened in Firefox. And, Firefox even asks me if I want to
make it my default browser!

To fix this, I have to go into Preferred Applications, and change
Firefox to Chromium. Then links open as expected.

[Bug 687493] Re: Chromium 8 does not allow automatically opening PDF files anymore

2011-04-17 Thread Tom Adams
To be fair though, PDFs are dangerous if you use Adobe software to read
them.

Maybe Chromium should check to see if Adobe Reader is installed, and
omit that message if it isn't.

Alternatively, there should just be an option to disable that message.

[Bug 767941] [NEW] Menubar-related options in GNOME Terminal make no sense with a global menu bar

2011-04-20 Thread Tom Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

There are two options in GNOME Terminal that make no sense in Unity with the
global menu bar:
- View > Show Menubar
- Edit > Profile Preferences > General > Show menubar by default

Whether the menubar is "shown" or not, it is visible at the top of the
screen when hovered over like any other globalised menu. When the
menubar is "shown" you can hold Alt and press V to get to the View menu
for instance, but when it is "hidden" the keystroke goes to the
terminal. But you can always move your mouse up there and click on it.

I can think of two solutions:
- One is to hide those two options when there's a global menu present (can the
user still access the menu with the keyboard, I wonder?)
- The other is to just change the wording of the questions when there's a
global menu available
