Unfortunately I have also some bad blocks on /dev/hda5. Same problem.

Trying to fix the problem without "-c" parameter (e.g. fsck /dev/hda6)
is giving me at one point the expected output (Buffer IO error...) when
trying to read from the bad sectors.

Usually without "-c" parameter it will not be able to mark bad blocks
and fsck will not be aware of them.

[Bug 83848] "fsck -c" on a HDD with bad sectors (ubuntu feisty herd 3)

2007-02-07 Thread Silviu Bojica
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsck-static

Running

fsck -cv /dev/hda6

on Sony Vayo PCG-Z1VGP with Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 (Herd 3) to mark bad
blocks on my filesystem.

On a "normal" HDD, it will run fine, but I have some bad blocks on my
disk. When it gets to read them, the above command will halt into a
continuous loop, giving next message:

[xxx:xx] Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be
trying access hardware directly.

Note that CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK will start blinking simultaneously, and
the system will come unresponsive, only the above message will go into a
continuous loop.

Normal result expected should be something like: IO error, cannot read
the block .

Booting with Ubuntu 6.06 live CD, I can correct the problem, but not
with Feisty (either installed or live cd).

** Affects: e2fsprogs (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
