[Bug 304840] [NEW] Cannot reconnect after internet connection has been lost and regained

2008-12-03 Thread Rune Svendsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: telepathy-butterfly

I'm having some problems getting Empathy to reconnect to my MSN account
after it has lost the connection.

For some reason, when I start uTorrent via WINE my wired connection is
lost (but that an entirely different bug). This, of course, causes
Empathy to lose connection and it goes off line. When Ubuntu manages to
get the wired connection up and running again I can't get Empathy to
connect. Choosing "Available" as the status doesn't work.

If I open the System Monitor and end the process "telepathy-butterfly"
and choose "Available" as the status in Empathy it works again (Empathy
starts the "telepathy-butterfly" process again).

[Bug 303411] [NEW] Contents of clipboard is deleted when the program from which text was copied is closed

2008-11-29 Thread Rune Svendsen
Public bug reported:

This has been bugging me (no pun intended) for a while now, so I've
decided to report it as a bug because that's what I consider it to be,
please correct me if it has some function I have overlooked.

Example: I want to start VirtualBox so I click on my short cut to
VirtualBox. Because I've upgraded VirtualBox the kernel module needs to
be recompiled and a windows appears which says which command to run in
order to do this. I highlight the command, and copy the text and close
the window. I open a terminal and I try to paste the copied text but
it's gone!

If I run VirtualBox again, copy the text and paste it into the terminal
while keeping the window with the text open it works fine. But as soon
as I close the program from which I copied the text, the text disappears
from the clipboard!

This is, IMO, really annoying and I've experienced it several times now
with other programs that I've copied text from and tried to paste after
the program has been closed.

[Bug 285603] Re: MASTER: xserver crash, performs poorly, or other severe problem when loading the radeon driver if -fglrx has not been properly removed first

2009-04-24 Thread Rune Svendsen
I just experienced this bug as well when upgrading from Intrepid to
Jaunty. Except I was using the "ati" video driver with Intrepid, and for
some reason the upgrade process installed the "fglrx" video driver and
this broke X. The gdm-log had the following to say:

/usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so:
undefined symbol: atiddxAbiDixLookupPrivate
5109 5077
giving up.

I solved the problem by purging everything fglrx-related and
reinstalling "libgl1-mesa-glx" and "libgl1-mesa-dri":

  sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx
  sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri
  dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

taken from this guide:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver
(linked in Bug #345669).

It seems to me that this is a bug in the upgrade process of Ubuntu. If
it hadn't installed the fglrx-driver, I assume everything would have
worked fine. At least it did after removing the fglrx-driver.

I have also experienced this bug. By following this advice from

"Ran into the same problem. Following jonaz__ solution, with the
exception that I killed the trackerd and tracker-indexer processes,
deleted the contents of ~/.cache/tracker and ~/.local/share/tracker/data
then logged out, and logged back in. Tracker indexer posted a
notification that it was starting up."

[Bug 272463] Re: Blank screen before login ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6

2008-11-07 Thread Rune Svendsen
I still experience this bug with the now officially released Intrepid,
and I can't update to this version because of this.

Getting to a console when the screen turns blank, stopping gdm,
executing the command "sudo chmod a-x /usr/bin/compiz" and restarting
gdm makes no difference.

I will attach the relevant logs here. I have no file called
"/var/log/gdm.log" but I have one called /var/log/log/gdm:0.log which I
will attach.

[Bug 272463] Re: Blank screen before login ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6

2008-09-25 Thread Rune Svendsen
Could you try doing the following? I want to see if the bug I've
reported (Bug #272877) is a duplicate of this bug. Basically, when the
black screen appears you try to get to a terminal by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+F1, stopping GDM, then changing the driver to "vesa" in
xorg.conf, and starting GDM again. Here's a more detailed description:

You can change the driver to "vesa" by getting to a console by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+F1 (do this when the black screen appears). Then shut down GDM
by typing:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Then you edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf with for example 'nano' by
typing:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

There should be a "Device"-section that looks like this (there might be
more lines of text between "Section" and "EndSection", but mine just
looks like this when using the Intrepid Alpha 6 Live CD):

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

In this section add a line with the text "Driver "vesa"". Doing so with
the example above would make it look like this:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Save the file and exit nano.

Now start GDM again by typing:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

2008-09-25 Thread Rune Svendsen
I'm a little confused here. When the error appears in Intrepid, you
aren't using the "vesa" driver are you?

Could you try doing the following? I want to see if this bug is a
duplicate of the bug I've reported (Bug #272877). Basically, when the
black/empty screen appears you try to get to a terminal by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+F1, stopping GDM, then changing the driver to "vesa" in

Then you edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf with for example 'nano' by

There should be a "Device"-section (if there isn't just copy the text
from below into the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf) that looks like this (there
might be more lines of text between "Section" and "EndSection", but mine
just looks like this when using the Intrepid Alpha 6 Live CD):

Any changes?

[Bug 272623] Re: Intrepid Alpha 6 Live CD: Monitor goes into standby when X is started

2008-09-21 Thread Rune Svendsen
I think the problem is with the "ati" device driver. If I manually edit
Xorg.conf to use the "vesa" driver isntead, I get to a login screen and
after that a working desktop. But if I change it back to the driver
"ati" the aforementioned symptom appears again.

Also, I can see that my Xorg.conf file is almost empty when I edit it
for the first time from the console I get to by pressing Alt+F1. I've
attached it here. But all it really contains is this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

When running the Inpretid Alpha 6 Live CD I just get a blank/black
screen when GDM starts. I am able to get to a console by pressing
Alt+F1, and if I change the driver to "vesa" in xorg.conf and restart
GDM, it starts fine and I can log in.

The system is still really slow at starting up though, as can be seen

[Bug 272877] Re: Blank screen when GDM starts

2008-09-24 Thread Rune Svendsen
You can change the driver to "vesa by getting to a console by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or is it Alt+F1? I can't remember). Then shut down GDM by
typing:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Then you edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf with for example 'nano' by
typing:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

There should be a "Device"-section that looks like this (there might be
more lines of text between "Section" and "EndSection", but mine just
looks like this when using the Intrepid Alpha 6 Live CD):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

In this section add a line with the text "Driver "vesa"". Doing so with
the example above would make it look like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Now start GDM again by typing:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

[Bug 229675] [NEW] Items on panel have changed positions

2008-05-12 Thread Rune Svendsen
Public bug reported:

It all started when I right clicked on my top panel - containing the
menus, quick launch icons etc - and unchecked expand. This went fine,
but when I checked the box again and the panel expanded the Applications
etc.-menu, instead of being at its usual place at the very left of the
screen, had moved all the way to the right so that there was a lot of
empty space left of the menu.

When I tried to restart my computer I intended to press Alt+R at the
shutdown dialog for it to reboot but as soon as I pressed Alt, the
screen turned black, about 10 seconds passed and I was presented with a
login screen again. When I logged in the icons were positioned, as the
screenshot implies, even worse than before. I am unable to move the
Applications etc.-menu-item.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.

[Bug 258510] [NEW] Default permission for subfolders on a mounted Nokia 6500 Classic USB disk is "Access files"

2008-08-16 Thread Rune Svendsen
Public bug reported:

When I plug in my Nokia 6500 Classic phone to be used as an USB storage
device it automounts fine. But when I enter one of the subfolders of the
device to paste a file the "Paste" option is disabled. I found out that
entering a subfolder, right-clicking and choosing Properties and
changing "Folder access" under the "Permissions"-tab to "Create and
delete files" allows me to write files to this particular subfolder.
This has to be repeated for every subfolder on the device that I wish to
write to.

It seems like it would be the most logical if the USB drive was mounted
with "Create and delete files" enabled by default. Not all people would
think to look under permissions, especially not if you're not used to
Linux. It took me a while to figure out at least.

I'm not sure what information to include but here's some output of "ls

Hello Bryce

I did what you said and I'm attaching the output here. I just snatched
the radeontool-package from Jaunty

[Bug 238462] Re: Canon Digital IXUS 750, digital camera, is not mounted automatically

I think this might be a hardware problem. When pluggin in the camera
everything seems to work fine and no errors are reported by Linux, but
the camera stops responding when the cable is plugged in. The screen
usually goes black but it just stays the same and no buttons work. So it
might not be a bug after all.

[Bug 334101] Re: FFe: Xv and EXA not supported on R6xx/R7xx chipsets

2009-07-18 Thread Rune Svendsen
I would just like to report my success on installing the radeon-drivers and
getting smooth video rendering and a working xvideo.
For me, however, radeonhd doesn't work very well so I have to use the radeon
driver and modify my xorg.conf in order for it to use the radeon driver instead
of the radeonhd driver by default.

Using the radeonhd driver makes the refresh rate of my monitor too low,
and I am unable to change it under Preferences->Display (the only
refresh rate present there is "0 Hz"). And changing the resolution
causes the colors on the screen to get very odd (light green, purple
etc.)

But, fortunately, with the radeon driver everything works perfectly.
Refresh rate is 85 Hz as usual, and under Preferences->Display I can see
this refresh rate and not just "0 Hz".

So, in short, this is what worked for me:

Installing the following packages from Tormod's PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa):

(I had to remove the old version of xserver-xorg-video-radeon first)
xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb
(197.1 KiB)
xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb
(201.5 KiB)
xserver-xorg-video-radeon_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb
(507.7 KiB)
xserver-xorg-video-radeon-dbg_6.12.99+git20090710.43db263d-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb
 (1.5 MiB)

Follow instructions on
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd%3Ar6xx_r7xx_branch for building new
versions of radeon.ko and drm.ko. Copying drm.ko and radeon.ko to
"/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/" and
"/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon" respectively.

Modifying my xorg.conf according to the instructions on the X.Org Wiki
and adding the following to the "Device" section so the "radeon" driver
is used instead of the default "radeonhd" driver:

Driver "radeon"

[Bug 405285] [NEW] [needs-packaging] gnome-disk-health-service

2009-07-27 Thread Rune Svendsen
Public bug reported:

gnome-disk-health-service is a wrapper around libatasmart that exports the
functionality of libatasmart via D-Bus so unprivileged processes can get access
to a hard drive's health records (temperature, number of bad sectors etc.).
gnome-disk-health-service enables the application "gnome-disk-health" to report

hard drive is failing (screenshot: http://0pointer.de/public/g-d-h)

[Bug 114659] keyboard stops working after upgrade to feisty

2007-05-14 Thread Rune Svendsen
Public bug reported:

I've followed the procedure which produces this bug before: installing
Ubuntu 6.10 from a Live CD, upgrading to Feisty over an internet
connection. The first time I did it it worked fine. Since the first
installation my hard drive crashed and I had to do it again. I've now
done it two times and both times, after rebooting when asked by the
upgrade process, I can't type anything into the login text box.

These are the things that have changed since the first upgrade to Feisty
(when it didn't produce this problem):

1. Moved some hardware around in my computer. I had my two hard drives on
separate IDE RAID controllers (RAID disabled) on my ABIT KR7A-RAID motherboard.
Now they are both on IDE1 (non-RAID). My two CD-ROM drives were both masters at
IDE1 and IDE2 respectively, they are now master and slave at IDE2.
2. New graphics card. Changed from an old ASUS AGP V5500 / 32 MB to ASUS
GeForce FX 5200.
3. Changed keyboard in the first non-working installation. The second
non-working installation I did with my old keyboard which worked the first time
upgrading.

My keyboard works fine at the BIOS screen and in GRUB. But when choosing
the upgraded installation and I get to the login screen it doesn't work
anymore.

The keyboard is connected to my PC via a PS/2 connector. My mouse, which
is an USB mouse, works fine. This, of course, begs the question if I've
tried with a USB keyboard but I don't own one unfortunately.

I've been looking through the /var/log/ directory of my non-working
installation and I found a few things which might be interesting,
they're included below.

Various logs from /var/log/:

I'm experiencing this bug as well. I've posted some info in a bug report

as a duplicate of this bug.

I've experienced this bug 2 times out of the 3 times I've upgraded 6.10
to 7.04. I'll see if I can dig up a date on the upgrade that worked, it
was circa 1-2 months ago as far as I recall. The two non-working
upgrades were made, starting with the first, about 1-2 weeks ago.

The last kernel did NOT solve the problem on my computer. I have an ABIT

[Bug 150846] Re: Quit button freezes screen but does not present Log out etc. options dialog

2008-04-30 Thread Rune Svendsen
It happens only for me if gnome-power-manager is not running. If I run
gnome-power-manager before pressing the button it appears instantly, and
presents a Hibernate button. The Hibernate button does not appear if it
hangs for a while before showing the dialog.

[Bug 150846] Re: Quit button freezes screen but does not present Log out etc. options dialog

2008-04-30 Thread Rune Svendsen
As far as I can tell, the reason the "shut down dialog" appears
instantly the second time the "Off button" is pressed is because
pressing it the first time, and waiting for it to stop hanging, starts
gnome-power-manager:

Before pressing the "Off button":

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps -aux | grep power
Warning: bad ps syntax, perhaps a bogus '-'? See http://procps.sf.net/faq.html
rune 7034 0.0 0.0 3004 752 pts/1R+ 07:12 0:00 grep power

After the "Off button" has been pressed, waiting for it to finish hanging, and
pressing "Cancel" in the "shut down dialog":

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps -aux | grep power
Warning: bad ps syntax, perhaps a bogus '-'? See http://procps.sf.net/faq.html
rune 7074 12.0 0.7 23460 7804 ?Ss 07:13 0:00

[Bug 226050] [NEW] "Unknown" error when trying to copy audio CD

2008-05-03 Thread Rune Svendsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

When trying to copy an audio cd (choosing "Disc copy" at the initial
screen), putting my source CD in one drive and the burnable CD in the
other, after analysing the tracks an "unknown error" occurs and the
copying stops. I've tried using different drives as the source and
destination but the same error occurs.

[Bug 226050] Re: "Unknown" error when trying to copy audio CD

2008-05-09 Thread Rune Svendsen
I am unable to select the same drive for reading a writing. The
"Copy"-button is disabled although the text indicates that i _can_ in
fact use the same drive for reading and writing.

I'm using Brasero 0.7.1.

[Bug 74002] Re: [Feisty] File Roller's "Extract" button no longer functions

2007-08-23 Thread Rune Svendsen
I'm experiencing the same problem. The "Extract" button (in the
"Extract" dialog) doesn't work and neither does drag-n-drop. The only
way I can get to the files in the archive is to use the "Extract here"
function when right clicking the file and retrieving the files that I
want to use from the created directory.

The archive is a backup of my "Documents and Settings" folder from my
Windows installation.

What can I do to help resolve this?

2007-08-25 Thread Rune Svendsen
I see. I just don't understand why the priority of this bug has been set
to "Low", as far as I can see it's rather significant.

Do you know any alternatives for File Roller for Ubuntu? I've been
searching the forums but I can't seem to find anything.
