[Bug 39822] Re: Trackpad didn't work with new user first time of use.

2008-07-05 Thread Ross
I can confirm this problem on my EeePC. A little more detail though. I
installed Ubuntu 8.04 with an external USB mouse attached. When booting
the laptop without a USB mouse I can use the trackpad in the login
screen, but when I login as the user created upon first installation it
stops working. Creating a new user and logging in works, and the mouse
is usable.

[Bug 71004] Re: Jaunty: shutdown to hang on a blank screen

2009-06-12 Thread ross
I have a Dell X1530M with Nvidia 8600M graphics. I'm on Jaunty with the
180.44 Nvidia driver.

Shutdown hangs for me with a whitish screen and something making the
laptop get pretty hot when I shutdown using the normal graphical method
from Gnome. It successfully shuts down if switch to tty1, shut down gdm
(i.e. close the X server), then issue a sudo shutdown.

So it's something in X that's causing the problem. I haven't figured out
if it's the Nvidia driver or something innate in X yet. When I get time
I'll remove the Nvidia driver, then try shutting down again from within
Gnome again.

[Bug 204566] Re: Rhythmbox keeps trying to install codecs

2009-04-19 Thread ross
I can also confirm this problem in Jaunty Release Candidate.
I can also confirm it is very annoying, as a dual-booter - although (on an
unrelated topic) I love the improved Januty boot speed.

[Bug 314038] Re: Integrated video interface is broken in Jaunty

2009-04-20 Thread ross
"Btw. there is a ppa with VLC 1.0.0-pre1 for Jaunty.
https://launchpad.net/~tim-kornhammar/+archive/ppa
Seems to work fine so far."

This only seems to include a package for Intrepid. I'm crossing my
fingers for a fix for this soon for Jaunty - this is a key piece of
software for many Ubuntu users, and the on-screen controls really made a
difference to perception.

[Bug 240071] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 11s!

2009-01-26 Thread Ross
I too am experiencing this problem with my ubuntu XEN system.
setting vcpus = 1 in my domU xen config file seems to have successfully worked
around the problem.

The problem appeared immediately following a kernel upgrade and a dom0 distro
upgrade from dapper to hardy.
old kernel 2.6.16.13-xen working correctly (compiled by hand)
new kernel 2.6.24-23-xen ubuntu hardy packaged kernel has the soft lockup
problems.

The domU is still dapper, totally unchanged.

Here are some details about my setup:

It is an Intel Pentium D dual-core cpu
3Gigs of RAM
Intel chipsets and dual Intel onboard NICs
headless, racked server, no graphics drivers

[Bug 357396] [NEW] gnome terminal title not updating on remote disconnection

2009-04-07 Thread Ross

[Bug 360852] [NEW] Install fails in Jaunty (Nvidia and/or migration assistant)

2009-04-13 Thread ross
Public bug reported:

I tried installing Jaunty Beta, Desktop 32-bit version using graphical
installation. I have an Intel Dual Core laptop, with Nvidia 8600GTM
graphics.

Installation appeared to proceed fine, but failed at around 80% - I
think the Xserver crashed, and the Ubuntu user was logged back in.
Research indicated this could be caused by a migration-assistant bug in
Ubiquity. Running Ubiquity from the command line with the "--no-
migration-assistant" option allowed installation to get to 90%, but
again X crashed - this time at the "Detect Hardware" stage. This leads
me to believe it might be caused by Nvidia / XOrg1.6 incompatabilities.

Because Installation failed half way through, the hard drive was left in
a non-working state - no operating system could boot since Grub was not
properly installed. The only reversion mechanism was to use an old,
working 8.10 installation disk to reinstate Grub.

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2008-04-21 Thread ross
I'm on Gutsy, on a PC, with a UK keyboard. I've had similar problems to some of
the posters here. Pressing +t launches a terminal, which is good
- I asked it to do this.
Pressing +e does not launch my home folder, despite me asking it
to do so in exactly the same way.

I liked Cardy's solution of manually typing e into gconf-editor.
This worked, kind of - except it soon became clear that Gnome was just
ignoring the part, and was launching Nautilus every time I pressed
the 'e' key. Not ideal.

Are others finding this problem with Cardy's solution (and backed up by
Paul K)? Any other work-arounds? I can live without e launching
nautilus, but I'm not sure my wife can!

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2008-04-21 Thread ross
Ralf,
Thanks, but that doesn't work for me. Compiz advanced settings->General
Options->Actions
If I set Command 0 set to run nautilus, and set Run Command 0 to Super+Y, then
pressing y launches nautilus.
If I set Run Command 0 to Super+E, pressing e does nothing.

The e combination is being treated differently to the y
combination. It's almost like something else already has e reserved
for some other function, but that function isn't doing anything.

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2008-04-21 Thread ross
Thanks all. Seems to be working now. I think gconf-editor and compiz
were arguing with each other; it went after I deleted all appropriate
references in gconf-editor (even where they were launching nautilus
themselves), and just let compiz do the work.

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2008-05-03 Thread ross
Christoffer,

I remember having this, but can't quite remember the solution. I _think_ it was
fixed by doing this:
System->Keyboard
Then on one of the tabs there's a list of options that you can switch on/off.
One of them is about alt keys and the windows key. You have to toggle that
switch, which stops the windows key being picked up as a single key press and
makes it a modifier.

Sorry I can't confirm, my ubuntu machine is dead at the moment - I'm
ordering a new laptop!

[Bug 162553] Re: openoffice word in guttsy crash when inserting picture

2007-11-28 Thread Ross
I've got gusty 7.10. Mine is freezing when inserting images. I have
the human theme. I reinstalled all the openoffice.org packages using
the ubuntu archives. I'm using OO Writer 2.3. I don't know what else
to add. Happens with any doc and any image type. Very irritating.

Any free similar programs to use until this bug is fixed? Or go back to
an old version of OO? Not back to feisty though.

Thanks.

You're right, I don't know it's the same bug-- It is the same error

It happens randomly when switching songs, clicking 'next', usually in

few hundred clicks, but it does occur is casual use.

[Bug 91149] Re: Evolution Emoticons / Smileys

2007-04-26 Thread Ross
I can confirm that this bug is in the version of evolution that gets
installed when upgrading from edgy to feisty (evolution 2.10.1-0ubuntu2
&& gtkhtml 3.14.1-0ubuntu2).

Specifically, with the feature "automatically insert smiley images"
enabled, usually an emoticon will appear after typing a smiley in text
(e.g. :( ). However, with this bug in place, all that appears is a red
X.

2007-06-29 Thread Ross
>From what I've read, ASLA will read this file (./asoundrc) for commands.
I did not have this on my fresh install of Ubuntu 7.04 64bit edition for
my soundblaster audigy. Reading up, I created the file in order to get
my 4.1 speakers to work. However, the file did not do so and running any
media player still produced only front speakers. I removed the file on a
hunch and sound was restored in youtube.

[Bug 83440] Re: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool

2007-02-08 Thread Ross
it appears that this has been reported before in bug 31844, which has
been marked as "fixed in 2.0.2". However, from my perspective, this bug
is not fixed in OO.org 2.0.4.

[Bug 83440] OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool

2007-02-05 Thread Ross
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce
1. launch OO Writer with a new blank document
2. Select Tools -> Bibliography Database
3. See error dialog about not being able to set columns
4. Click "No"
5. Try to enter a record or otherwise select just about any menu option
6. Crash!

I can provide more detailed information or screenshots if that will be
useful. This capability worked fine in OO 2.0.2. I have the ubuntu-
amd64-edgy distribution.

Here is a similar report I found searching google, although there's not much
useful information here:

[Bug 83440] Re: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool

2007-02-06 Thread Ross
I just verified that this error condition does not manifest itself on my
laptop, which is running a ubuntu-edgy installation (non-amd64).

Both my amd64 desktop and my 32-bit laptop are running the same version
of OpenOffice.org 2.0.4-0ubuntu4.

I also verified that a friend who is also running ubuntu-edgy-amd64 is
seeing similar problems with the OpenOffice.org bibliography database.

This suggests that the bug may be limited to amd64 OpenOffice.org
packages.

[Bug 577515] [NEW] Notification area icons overlap each other, in incorrect order

2010-05-08 Thread Ross
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Bit hard to describe so a screenshot is attached.

Basically there are two issues - icons overlapping each other, causing
weird glitches, and the icons being out of order (the power icon should
be far right). In one overlapping case the power button (for some reason
in the middle of the icons) is nearly unclickable as it's been
overlapped by a glitch of the me-menu item.

[Bug 151674] Re: compiz+nvidia: tearing in xvideo (totem/mplayer/VLC/XINE)

2010-01-06 Thread ross
I also get tearing with Compiz turned off.

Nvidia ION, Driver version 190.53, Ubuntu 9.10.

The only way I have got tearing to go away is add a section to xorg.conf
to disable compositing.

I have tried something similar to Murky's solution without success. I
didn't follow his instructions exactly though, so I might give that a
whirl and will let you know if I have any success.

[Bug 587684] [NEW] Inexplicable green line towards the top of graphs

2010-05-30 Thread Ross
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: munin

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Munin 1.4.4-1ubuntu1

Towards the top of a couple graphs, "Disk usage in percent" (plugin df)
and "Inode usage in percent" (plugin df_infode), there is a thin green
line at the ~92% point. As can be seen in the images attached to this
report, the tables below the graphs show nothing which could explain the
line.

The green line is present for all four (day, week, month, year) graphs of each
plugin.

[Bug 577515] Re: Notification area icons overlap each other, in incorrect order

2010-05-13 Thread Ross
This seems to be fixed recently. After an update the power management
icon reappeared and then it was just an issue of unlocking each set of
icons, moving them and re-locking. That's the kind of thing that
happened with my dock though kaefert.

[Bug 502543] [NEW] Cannot boot more than twice without fsck

2010-01-03 Thread Ross
Public bug reported:

I know there are other similar bug reports, but I cannot find anything
specific t this issue. After upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, I ran
into major problems with booting. i am currently using grub 2 and have
converted my file system to ext4. The symptoms of this bug are that
after running fsck, the system boots normally. On the second boot, it
usually boots normally. By the third boot, it either takes 10 to 30 min
to boot or will not boot at all.

The boot sequence always goes smoothly (and fast) up to 'apparmor
complain mode'. When it slows down or freezes it's at either fsck check
(clean or otherwise), or at loading keymap.

Currently, although this has not always been the case, I get some
mountall failures during the boot sequence. On occasion, I also receive
some alsa failures, and sometimes cpu 1 Bug soft lockup. None of these
happen on every boot sequence, but after three reboots a fsck is
required to boot into the upgraded Karmic install.

Also of note, I have clean installation of Karmic on another partition
that boots fine.

[Bug 1927742] [NEW] dolphin in focal can't delete webdav directories running on focal's apache

2021-05-07 Thread Ross
Public bug reported:

/etc/apache2/mods-available/setenvif.conf from the apache2 package has
this:

BrowserMatch " Konqueror/4" redirect-carefully

While dolphin is Konqueror/5 in focal. Trying to delete a directory on
webdav dolphin just gets a http 301 redirect.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
Release:20.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
apache2:
  Installed: 2.4.41-4ubuntu3.1

3) What you expected to happen
Dolphin should be able to remove directories over webdav

4) What happened instead
Apache issues a redirect from prefix/dir to prefix/dir/

127.0.0.1 - user1 [07/May/2021:02:19:53 +] "DELETE /webdav/test
HTTP/1.1" 301 578 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) KHTML/5.68.0
(like Gecko) Konqueror/5 KIO/5.68"

Dolphin doesn't follow the redirect hence nothing happens.

[Bug 1803791] [NEW] nemo mounts nfs share with read only access

2018-11-16 Thread Ross
Public bug reported:

When mounting a NFS share either manually or through fstab the directory
shows has a padlock which results in a read only state for the first
directory level; however any directories within the first directory can
be wrote to.

This issue does not happen within the terminal (with standard user
permissions) or using a different file manager, for example, pcmanfm as
the mounted share is writable folder across all directory levels.

Note: I encountered the same issue with nautilus.

ethtool shows 'd' after usb resume/wake

[Bug 631864] Re: shotwell doesn't find facebook existing albums

2010-11-16 Thread ross
Hi I just built the source from trunk following those instructions.
Help->About now says "Shotwell 0.7.2+trunk" - it's the first time I've
built Shotwell from source, I admit.

I found a new section to the Publish dialog that allows me to control
the privacy of the photos I publish to Facebook, but the ability to
choose an existing album is still greyed out.

Let me know if you would like any logs to help debug this (and how to
create / gather them).

Hmm, well this is pretty buggy. I'm not about to pull apart my computer
to get this to boot, I'd rather move to another distro.

I believe https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pkgsel/+bug/995140
covers the same issue - the error appears to be the result of truncated
filenames.

[Bug 954661] Re: backlight brightness not adjustable by default on Dell XPS 13

2013-04-05 Thread Ross
I'm using the latest Raring, and this seems to have cropped up again--
the brightness indicator pops up, but the screen brightness doesn't
change. I'm on an XPS 13 (not the new high-res one)

[Bug 873545] Re: After update Nautilus icons are black/white, no decorations of breadcrumb etc.

2011-10-26 Thread ross
Screenshot from ronsonk exactly describes the problem for me too. Reboots don't
fix it. I'm using Nvidia proprietary drivers. I noticed the problem for the
first time today, the install (since fresh a week ago) has been fine until now.
Possibly related - sound sometimes doesn't start properly either (starting
cheese sometimes fixes it - go figure!), and the shutdown button top right just
seems to log me out when I choose restart while the "shut down" application
does work.

Something's screwy...

[Bug 1968636] [NEW] cryptroot-unlock doesn't work at all when terminal width is below 51

2022-04-11 Thread Ross
Public bug reported:

I'm speaking about ubuntu 20.04.4 with cryptsetup 2:2.2.2-3ubuntu2.4.
The behaviour is the same in ubuntu 22.04. I havent tried 18.04 and
older LTS, probably the same problem there as well.

So I have your usual setup with luks encrypted root. I've installed
dropbear-initramfs to make it remotely unlockable, set everything up and
tried to unlock it connecting from termux with my phone. When I ran
cryptroot-unlock it kept silent (not even the prompt) for some secs and
quit with such error:

Error: Timeout reached while waiting for askpass.

Long story short: if I rotated the phone everything worked as supposed.

I tracked it down to this piece in cryptroot-unlock:

# Print the list of PIDs the executed command of which is $exe.
pgrep_exe() {
local exe pid
exe="$(readlink -f -- "$1" 2>/dev/null)" && [ -f "$exe" ] || return 0
ps | awk '{print $1, $5}' | while read LINE; do
set $LINE
local pid=$1
local cmd=$(readlink -f -- "$2")
if [ "$cmd" == "$exe" ]; then
echo $pid
break
fi
done
}

Notice it walks through "ps" (busybox one) lines which adapts its output
to the terminal width. Check out this shell session:

> stty size
40 115
> /usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox ps | grep '[b]usybox'
18944 account 2804 R/usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox ps
## resize the terminal width to 50
> stty size
40 50
> /usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox ps | grep '[b]usybox'
18947 account 2804 R{busybox} /usr/lib/ini

Look at the last line above. "ps" ensures one terminal line per process,
no wrapping. If a line is too long, cut it. If the full binary path is
to be cut, prepend the binary basename in curly braces.

Here is a shell session over dropbear connection:

> stty size
40 115
> ps | grep '[a]skpass'
  285 root 2364 S/lib/cryptsetup/askpass Please unlock disk
dm_crypt-0:
## resize the terminal width to 50
> stty size
40 50
> ps | grep '[a]skpass'
  285 root 2364 S{askpass} /lib/cryptse

As you can see askpass cmdline is a total mess now and because of that
pgrep_exe cant find askpass PID.

A quick fix could be "ps -w" instead of just "ps" in pgrep_exe. It would make
ps assume the terminal width 132 which is enough for askpass line to be printed
pristine.

Currently one cant unlock encrypted root with terminal width up to and
including 50.

[Bug 2765] Re: Cannot scan availables devices

2008-07-04 Thread Ross Campbell
I can confirm that cdrdao as shipped or available for hardy heron for
X64 continues to exhibit this problem of providing repeated 1 second
error messages and then bombs out.

I built cdrdao-1.2.2 from sources and it did *not* have this problem.
I'm guessing the packages versions are linking with an older libschily
or something...

[Bug 246067] Re: Kernel panic during boot in VirtualBox with kernel 2.6.26.3-generic

2008-07-27 Thread Ross Peoples
I had VT-x disabled and got [0.491424] BUG: unable to handle kernel <1>
which repeats itself all the way down the screen. I turned VT-x on and
was able to boot. KEEP IN MIND, that when you check the Enable
VT-x/AMD-V checkbox once, that does NOT enable it!!! That just puts it
into a grayed state. Clicking it a second time enables it.

2008-07-29 Thread Lex Ross
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic

Syntek USB Camera does not work with Skype as reported at
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=101853

Part of dmesg on my Asus F5N laptop running Hardy 64-bit with recent
updates (2.6.24-19-generic kernel):

[ 59.412536] stk11xx: v1.3.1 : Syntek USB Video Camera

Skype forum suggest this "Check device return error (0x0201 = 0C) !"
string is because syntek driver was compiled without ioctl32 support.
Hope this will be fixed with the next kernel modules update.

[Bug 251952] Re: [Hardy] FTDI based USB to Serial Converter not recognized

2008-07-30 Thread Lex Ross
Thank you Freddy for your prompt response! You made me so happy provided
that most reported bugs stay unassigned for ages with no attention from
Ubuntu team (I think that is because of the tight release cycle that
leaves no room for bug fixing, forcing developers to bend over backwards
to deliver new version on time).

Anyhow, you hint was of great help, as I am not a developer myself and
would not figure out what to do without your help. Would you be so kind
to review syslog output before I propose a patch to linux-usb mailing
list. What worries me is that it became way too verbose with both FTDI
and Prolific cables where it used to be just two lines, first saying
that device was detected, and the second informing that it has been
attached to /dev/ttyUSB0.

Do I need to reference specific patch in ftdi_sio.c or just leave it as
it is? Please advise.

What went into ftdi_sio.c structure was the line:
 { USB_DEVICE(FTDI_VID, FTDI_PHI_FISCO_PID) },

And into ftdi_sio.h went this one:
#define FTDI_PHI_FISCO_PID  0xE40B  /* PHI Fisco USB to Serial cable */

The question is, do I need extra options in ftdi_sio.c

Thanks in advance!

P.S. And if you could direct me to instructions on how to create a
patch, that would be of great help, too. I'd love to be of help to the
community.

[Bug 56785] Re: ACPI: No support for device type: thermal

2008-08-25 Thread Lex Ross
I have the same problem on my desktop with Hardy running kernel
2.6.24-19-generic and acpid version 1.0.4-5ubuntu9. My motherboard is
MSI K7T Turbo-R Limited Edition with 1.2GHz AMD Athlon CPU.
(Motherboard: MS-6330, Award BIOS v.3.6). Hardy does not control fan
speed either. However, lm-sensors can read BIOS information just fine:

$sensors
via686a-isa-6000
Adapter: ISA adapter
CPU core:+1.83 V (min = +0.06 V, max = +3.10 V)
+2.5V: +0.36 V (min = +0.06 V, max = +3.10 V)
I/O: +3.42 V (min = +3.12 V, max = +3.45 V)
+5V: +5.03 V (min = +4.73 V, max = +5.20 V)
+12V: +12.85 V (min = +11.35 V, max = +12.48 V)
CPU Fan:5921 RPM (min =0 RPM, div = 2)
P/S Fan: 0 RPM (min =0 RPM, div = 8)
SYS Temp:+55.5°C (high = +146.2°C, hyst = -70.9°C)
CPU Temp:+42.4°C (high = +146.2°C, hyst = -70.9°C)
SBr Temp:+24.2°C (high = -70.9°C, hyst = -70.9°C)

The problem of Ubuntu not controlling the fan speed was there in Gutsy
and now exists in Hardy.

[Bug 290395] Re: [Intrepid] Xerox Phaser 6100 driver 2.0.0 does not work causing SpliX error

2008-12-08 Thread Lex Ross
Sorry for delayed response - my laptop was in for repairs. Re-installed it with
Intrepid
and splix_ 2.0.0~rc2-0ubuntu2.3_i386.deb from intrepid-proposed. Worked like a
charm until recent system update. Now I am getting the same error message
"SpliX Error while rendering the request. Check the previous message".
Installing cups_1.3.9-2ubuntu4 from intrepid-proposed did not help.

[Bug 301512] [NEW] no text is visible in open office menus (all)

2008-11-23 Thread Ross Copeland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I had Ubuntu 8.04 and Open Office worked with no problems. I upgraded to
8.1. Now when I start Open Office (all applications) the text in the
top line of the menus toolbars appears as straight lines. Also text in
drop down boxes does not show. Symbols are OK, text can be typed into
work areas but the text in the tool bar area does not show. This
problem has been reported at Open Office but the suggested solutions
haven't worked for me. I have tried removing Open Office using Synaptic
Manager and reinstalling but that didn't work either.

I have tried other office suites eg KOffice but the same problem occurs
