[Bug 39822] Re: Trackpad didn't work with new user first time of use.
I can confirm this problem on my EeePC. A little more detail though. I installed Ubuntu 8.04 with an external USB mouse attached. When booting the laptop without a USB mouse I can use the trackpad in the login screen, but when I login as the user created upon first installation it stops working. Creating a new user and logging in works, and the mouse is usable. -- Trackpad didn't work with new user first time of use. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/39822 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 71004] Re: Jaunty: shutdown to hang on a blank screen
I have a Dell X1530M with Nvidia 8600M graphics. I'm on Jaunty with the 180.44 Nvidia driver. Shutdown hangs for me with a whitish screen and something making the laptop get pretty hot when I shutdown using the normal graphical method from Gnome. It successfully shuts down if switch to tty1, shut down gdm (i.e. close the X server), then issue a sudo shutdown. So it's something in X that's causing the problem. I haven't figured out if it's the Nvidia driver or something innate in X yet. When I get time I'll remove the Nvidia driver, then try shutting down again from within Gnome again. -- Jaunty: shutdown to hang on a blank screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/71004 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

"Btw. there is a ppa with VLC 1.0.0-pre1 for Jaunty. https://launchpad.net/~tim-kornhammar/+archive/ppa Seems to work fine so far." This only seems to include a package for Intrepid. I'm crossing my fingers for a fix for this soon for Jaunty - this is a key piece of software for many Ubuntu users, and the on-screen controls really made a difference to perception. -- Integrated video interface is broken in Jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/314038 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 360852] [NEW] Install fails in Jaunty (Nvidia and/or migration assistant)
Public bug reported: I tried installing Jaunty Beta, Desktop 32-bit version using graphical installation. I have an Intel Dual Core laptop, with Nvidia 8600GTM graphics. Installation appeared to proceed fine, but failed at around 80% - I think the Xserver crashed, and the Ubuntu user was logged back in. Research indicated this could be caused by a migration-assistant bug in Ubiquity. Running Ubiquity from the command line with the "--no- migration-assistant" option allowed installation to get to 90%, but again X crashed - this time at the "Detect Hardware" stage. This leads me to believe it might be caused by Nvidia / XOrg1.6 incompatabilities. Because Installation failed half way through, the hard drive was left in a non-working state - no operating system could boot since Grub was not properly installed. The only reversion mechanism was to use an old, working 8.10 installation disk to reinstate Grub. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: I tried installing Jaunty Beta, Desktop 32-bit version using graphical installation. [Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts
I'm on Gutsy, on a PC, with a UK keyboard. I've had similar problems to some of the posters here. Pressing +t launches a terminal, which is good - I asked it to do this. Pressing +e does not launch my home folder, despite me asking it to do so in exactly the same way. I liked Cardy's solution of manually typing e into gconf-editor. This worked, kind of - except it soon became clear that Gnome was just ignoring the part, and was launching Nautilus every time I pressed the 'e' key. Not ideal. Are others finding this problem with Cardy's solution (and backed up by Paul K)? Any other work-arounds? I can live without e launching nautilus, but I'm not sure my wife can! -- Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/12153 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ralf, Thanks, but that doesn't work for me. Compiz advanced settings->General Options->Actions If I set Command 0 set to run nautilus, and set Run Command 0 to Super+Y, then pressing y launches nautilus. If I set Run Command 0 to Super+E, pressing e does nothing. The e combination is being treated differently to the y combination. It's almost like something else already has e reserved for some other function, but that function isn't doing anything. -- Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/12153 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts
Christoffer, I remember having this, but can't quite remember the solution. I _think_ it was fixed by doing this: System->Keyboard Then on one of the tabs there's a list of options that you can switch on/off. One of them is about alt keys and the windows key. You have to toggle that switch, which stops the windows key being picked up as a single key press and makes it a modifier. Reading up, I created the file in order to get my 4.1 speakers to work. However, the file did not do so and running any media player still produced only front speakers. I removed the file on a hunch and sound was restored in youtube. [Bug 83440] Re: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool
it appears that this has been reported before in bug 31844, which has been marked as "fixed in 2.0.2". However, from my perspective, this bug is not fixed in OO.org 2.0.4. ** Changed in: openoffice.org (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: openoffice.org => openoffice.org-amd64 -- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool https://launchpad.net/bugs/83440 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 83440] OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool
Public bug reported: steps to reproduce 1. launch OO Writer with a new blank document 2. Select Tools -> Bibliography Database 3. See error dialog about not being able to set columns 4. Click "No" 5. Try to enter a record or otherwise select just about any menu option 6. Crash! I can provide more detailed information or screenshots if that will be useful. This capability worked fine in OO 2.0.2. I have the ubuntu- amd64-edgy distribution. [Bug 83440] Re: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool
I just verified that this error condition does not manifest itself on my laptop, which is running a ubuntu-edgy installation (non-amd64). Both my amd64 desktop and my 32-bit laptop are running the same version of OpenOffice.org 2.0.4-0ubuntu4. I also verified that a friend who is also running ubuntu-edgy-amd64 is seeing similar problems with the OpenOffice.org bibliography database. This suggests that the bug may be limited to amd64 OpenOffice.org packages. -- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 crashes when launching Bibliography Database tool https://launchpad.net/bugs/83440 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 577515] [NEW] Notification area icons overlap each other, in incorrect order
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Bit hard to describe so a screenshot is attached. Basically there are two issues - icons overlapping each other, causing weird glitches, and the icons being out of order (the power icon should be far right). I also get tearing with Compiz turned off. Nvidia ION, Driver version 190.53, Ubuntu 9.10. The only way I have got tearing to go away is add a section to xorg.conf to disable compositing. [Bug 502543] [NEW] Cannot boot more than twice without fsck
Public bug reported: I know there are other similar bug reports, but I cannot find anything specific t this issue. After upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, I ran into major problems with booting. i am currently using grub 2 and have converted my file system to ext4. The symptoms of this bug are that after running fsck, the system boots normally. On the second boot, it usually boots normally. By the third boot, it either takes 10 to 30 min to boot or will not boot at all. The boot sequence always goes smoothly (and fast) up to 'apparmor complain mode'. When it slows down or freezes it's at either fsck check (clean or otherwise), or at loading keymap. Currently, although this has not always been the case, I get some mountall failures during the boot sequence. On occasion, I also receive some alsa failures, and sometimes cpu 1 Bug soft lockup. None of these happen on every boot sequence, but after three reboots a fsck is required to boot into the upgraded Karmic install. Also of note, I have clean installation of Karmic on another partition that boots fine. Screenshot from ronsonk exactly describes the problem for me too. Reboots don't fix it. I'm using Nvidia proprietary drivers. I noticed the problem for the first time today, the install (since fresh a week ago) has been fine until now. Possibly related - sound sometimes doesn't start properly either (starting cheese sometimes fixes it - go figure!), and the shutdown button top right just seems to log me out when I choose restart while the "shut down" application does work. [Bug 1968636] [NEW] cryptroot-unlock doesn't work at all when terminal width is below 51
Public bug reported: I'm speaking about ubuntu 20.04.4 with cryptsetup 2:2.2.2-3ubuntu2.4. The behaviour is the same in ubuntu 22.04. I havent tried 18.04 and older LTS, probably the same problem there as well. So I have your usual setup with luks encrypted root. I've installed dropbear-initramfs to make it remotely unlockable, set everything up and tried to unlock it connecting from termux with my phone. When I ran cryptroot-unlock it kept silent (not even the prompt) for some secs and quit with such error: Error: Timeout reached while waiting for askpass. Long story short: if I rotated the phone everything worked as supposed. I tracked it down to this piece in cryptroot-unlock: # Print the list of PIDs the executed command of which is $exe. pgrep_exe() { local exe pid exe="$(readlink -f -- "$1" 2>/dev/null)" && [ -f "$exe" ] || return 0 ps | awk '{print $1, $5}' | while read LINE; do set $LINE local pid=$1 local cmd=$(readlink -f -- "$2") if [ "$cmd" == "$exe" ]; then echo $pid break fi done } Notice it walks through "ps" (busybox one) lines which adapts its output to the terminal width. Check out this shell session: > stty size 40 115 > /usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox ps | grep '[b]usybox' 18944 account 2804 R/usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox ps ## resize the terminal width to 50 > stty size 40 50 > /usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox ps | grep '[b]usybox' 18947 account 2804 R{busybox} /usr/lib/ini Look at the last line above. "ps" ensures one terminal line per process, no wrapping. If a line is too long, cut it. If the full binary path is to be cut, prepend the binary basename in curly braces. Here is a shell session over dropbear connection: > stty size 40 115 > ps | grep '[a]skpass' 285 root 2364 S/lib/cryptsetup/askpass Please unlock disk dm_crypt-0: ## resize the terminal width to 50 > stty size 40 50 > ps | grep '[a]skpass' 285 root 2364 S{askpass} /lib/cryptse As you can see askpass cmdline is a total mess now and because of that pgrep_exe cant find askpass PID. A quick fix could be "ps -w" instead of just "ps" in pgrep_exe. It would make ps assume the terminal width 132 which is enough for askpass line to be printed pristine. Currently one cant unlock encrypted root with terminal width up to and including 50. ** Affects: cryptsetup (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: cryptsetup cryptsetup-initramfs -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1968636 Title: cryptroot-unlock doesn't work at all when terminal width is below 51 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/+bug/1968636/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm that cdrdao as shipped or available for hardy heron for X64 continues to exhibit this problem of providing repeated 1 second error messages and then bombs out. [Bug 251952] Re: [Hardy] FTDI based USB to Serial Converter not recognized
Thank you Freddy for your prompt response! You made me so happy provided that most reported bugs stay unassigned for ages with no attention from Ubuntu team (I think that is because of the tight release cycle that leaves no room for bug fixing, forcing developers to bend over backwards to deliver new version on time). Anyhow, you hint was of great help, as I am not a developer myself and would not figure out what to do without your help. Would you be so kind to review syslog output before I propose a patch to linux-usb mailing list. What worries me is that it became way too verbose with both FTDI and Prolific cables where it used to be just two lines, first saying that device was detected, and the second informing that it has been attached to /dev/ttyUSB0. Do I need to reference specific patch in ftdi_sio.c or just leave it as it is? Please advise. /var/log/syslog: 1.
