I have a Dell X1530M with Nvidia 8600M graphics. I'm on Jaunty with the
180.44 Nvidia driver.

Shutdown hangs for me with a whitish screen and something making the
laptop get pretty hot when I shutdown using the normal graphical method
from Gnome. It successfully shuts down if switch to tty1, shut down gdm
(i.e. close the X server), then issue a sudo shutdown.

So it's something in X that's causing the problem. I haven't figured out
if it's the Nvidia driver or something innate in X yet. When I get time
I'll remove the Nvidia driver, then try shutting down again from within
Gnome again.
