[Bug 114122] Re: Burner not working in 7,04

I was having a similar problem with an IDE CD burner, it wouldn't erase

up an external USB burner it worked fine. Don't know if this helps shed
any light on the problem. Relevant sections from lshw are below, I can

[Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot

2006-08-17 Thread PeteDonnell
I don't think this is a bug in smbfs. Since I upgraded to Dapper, my
cifs (i.e. not smbfs) mount in /etc/fstab hasn't been working on boot.
There weren't any obvious problems, no errors from the kernel, and no
hangups*, so I was a bit puzzled but didn't get around to investigating
it. The share doesn't get used very often and a simple 'sudo mount
/mnt/share' mounted it when I needed it.

Today I found this report and tried the workaround suggested, by adding
noauto to the fstab entry and putting 'mount /mnt/share' in
/etc/rc.local. This fixed the problem. It seems to me there is a general
problem with mounting network shares, not just smbfs. I've not tried
nfs.

* unlike the experiences described here with smbfs - although I'm using
Kubuntu and don't have Gnome installed, which may have affected things
since some people mentioned problems with Nautilus.

[Bug 50840] Re: scilab 4

2006-08-31 Thread PeteDonnell
As a temporary workaround, while we're waiting for the new version to be
released, it's possible to run scilab in text (i.e. non-windowed) mode
using the command 'scilab -nw'. This avoids the problem with the fonts.
Not ideal but it may help some people.

[Bug 3496] Re: scilab installer bad path and fonts

2006-08-31 Thread PeteDonnell
Looks as though there is progress towards version 4 being released, see
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/scilab/+bug/58088

While we're still using the buggy version 3, I discovered that it's
possible to run scilab in command line (as opposed to windowed) mode,
using the command 'scilab -nw'. This appears to get round the font
problem. Obviously it's not an ideal solution, but does allow scilab to
be used without messing around with packages or compiling from source.

[Bug 52573] Re: GTK+ apps show wrong scrollbars

2006-10-19 Thread PeteDonnell
Which version should I upgrade to? I'm running the latest versions
available in Dapper (firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-ubuntu0.6.06 and gtk-
engines-gtk-qt 0.60-1.1ubuntu7 at the time of writing). Am I right in
thinking that the fix has been released upstream in Edgy and probably
won't be backported to Dapper? As this is a work machine I don't really
want to go to Edgy until it's stable.

For what it's worth, this machine was originally installed using a
Kubuntu 5.10 CD and subsequently upgraded. I have a number of other
machines that were installed using Ubuntu 6.06 CDs, and the problem has
not occurred on these, even though kubuntu-desktop was subsequently
installed and the default window manager was changed from Gnome to KDE.
Presumably this is because the Ubuntu install includes a lot of Gnome
libraries that don't get installed on a standard Kubuntu install.

[Bug 52573] Re: GTK+ apps show wrong scrollbars

2006-09-19 Thread PeteDonnell
This is still occurring for me, although according to the bug report I
first saw it under (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gtk-qt-

packages are up to date. I'm running dapper with gtk2-engines-gtk-qt

[Bug 113637] Samba printers requiring username/password fail on reboot

2007-05-09 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

Printers at my work are only accessible via Samba, with a valid username
and password. I add them through the KDE System Settings->Printers
dialogue, as SMB printers, using my username and password. On initial
setup, they work fine (both a Samsung CLP-500 using the splix drivers
and a Kyocera Mita 3035 using the default drivers that ship with
Ubuntu). On reboot, they no longer work, as in no document or test page
sent to either printer seems to get through, no error messages come back
(that I have found), it just says "Document successfully sent to the
printer" and that's the last I hear.

Similar problems seem to have been mentioned on the KDE-print-devel list, e.g.
at http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kde-print-devel/2007-February/001563.html, so
this may well be an upstream bug. The problem seems to be related to the device
uri. When a printer has initially been added, in the KDE printer setup program
main page, selecting the printer shows its info, which contains the following
line:
Device: smb://workgroup/SERVER/networkprintername

After reboot, its info appears instead as
Device: smb://username:pass (truncated)

In both cases, these strings match the value returned by 'lpstat -v
localprintername'. I've tried manually setting the Device info back to
what it initially appears as, via 'lpadmin -p localprintername -v
smb://workgroup/SERVER/networkprintername' but this doesn't appear to
fix the problem.

It's almost certainly related to the fact that my network samba password
contains a hash ('#') character. Before reboot, when the printers are
working fine, my username and password do not appear in the Device info.
After reboot, when the printers no longer work, the Device info contains
my username, my password up to but not including the # character, and
nothing else. The workgroup, server and printer name have all
disappeared.

I'm aware that accessing a printer via username/password over samba is
not recommended by the cups team for security reasons, but I don't have
much choice. It's strange to me that the printer works initially, but
something in the reboot process screws with the settings and causes this
breakage. It's not the end of the world, but I'd like to find some kind
of workaround for this and I currently just don't know enough about how
the printing system works to go any further. I've tried looking for a
config file that stores the network credentials for use of the printer,
so that I can escape the # by changing it to a %23 (if that's the
correct uri escape character), but so far haven't been able to find it.
Ideally of course, a proper fix would be available as opposed to a
workaround.

If this is an upstream bug, please let me know so I can report it there
instead/as well. At the moment I'm not sure if the problem lies with
smbspool, or with the KDE Printer setup's method of hiding the username
& password for a samba printer uri, or something else.

For info, I'm running Kubuntu 7.04, currently fully up-to-date.

[Bug 151335] PowerPC version of mpc123 needs patching

2007-10-10 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

The current version of mpc123 for PowerPC doesn't work properly.
Whatever options are passed to it are seemingly ignored, meaning that no
files can be played. I found a trivial patch for it at http://www.mail-
archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg104193.html

I downloaded the source for the "latest development version" of mpc123
following instructions on http://mpc123.sourceforge.net/dl.php and
applied the patch. This appears to fix the issue.

The bug doesn't seem to affect the Ubuntu x86 release of mpc123, which
plays back fine without modification. I don't have access to any other
architectures to test whether they are affected or not.

[Bug 131321] Re: distmp3host fails to start on i386

2007-10-11 Thread PeteDonnell
Just in case it helps with debugging this problem:

distmp3host starts normally after it's installed, whether it's a fresh
install, or a reinstall using 'apt-get install --reinstall distmp3'.
However, it doesn't start after a reboot, from '/etc/init.d/distmp3
start' or '/etc/init.d/distmp3 restart', or even from 'distmp3host' run
directly from an interactive shell.

It looks from this as though something's wrong in the initscript, but
the same problem isn't in the package post-install script. I've tried
looking at the initscript /etc/init.d/distmp3 and what I think is the
post-install script (/var/lib/dpkg/info/distmp3.postinst), but can't
figure out the problem. I don't know much about initscripts or shell
scripts in general so it's a bit of a mystery to me what's going on.

Just to clarify again, my original bug report was misleading, this
doesn't appear to be an i386 issue at all. So far I have observed it on
3 different x86 machines and a PowerPC. Presumably other architectures
are also affected.

I don't mind looking into this further as I'm sure it's quite a simple
problem, but I need some idea of what to investigate.

[Bug 85291] Re: ext 3 filesystems are never fsck'ed if they live on removable USB disks

2007-09-27 Thread PeteDonnell
I'd like to add a further comment to this bug. I have a computer running
Kubuntu Feisty with an external hard drive which is formatted with JFS.
At some point it was apparently removed from the computer without being
properly unmounted (I'm not sure if this was due to a system crash or
someone being careless as I'm not the only user of the computer, and it
happened when someone else was using it). The next time the external
drive was connected, as usual the KDE automount popup appeared, but when
a user attempted to access the disk it failed to mount. I'm afraid I
don't remember the exact error message it gave, but it wasn't too
helpful. I tried mounting the drive by hand, and that didn't work
either. I checked 'dmesg | tail' to see if any information appeared
there, and there was a message about JFS. I'm pretty sure that it didn't
mention anything about the drive being improperly unmounted, but I
guessed that this was the cause of the problem and ran fsck. Sure
enough, once fsck had run the drive mounted just fine.

The point I'm trying to make here is that while I've been using Linux
for a few years and didn't have too much trouble figuring out what the
problem was, the other users of the computer were stumped. The fact that
external drives are never fsck'ed is definitely a bad thing from the
point of view of data integrity, but if the automounter doesn't detect
when an external drive hasn't been properly unmounted and offer the
option of checking the system most users are going to be much more
confused when the drive won't mount, which I think is a more serious
problem.

I realise this isn't strictly an Ubuntu bug but exists upstream too.

[Bug 218791] [NEW] displayconfig-gtk settings don't persist

2008-04-17 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to Hardy from Gutsy. I'm using an old S3 Virge, which
under Gutsy I had running just fine at [EMAIL PROTECTED] However, under
Hardy neither the monitor nor the graphics card seem to be picked up
correctly. All I can get is the failsafe 800x600 resolution with the
vesa driver, which isn't much good to me. I can't use my known good
xorg.conf from Gutsy because of the change to the new displayconfig-gtk
(I have tried, and it gets ignored).

I've tried connecting the computer up to an older monitor, a Hansol
920P, and setting it to a more modest 1024x768, but this hasn't helped.
When I run displayconfig-gtk (via gksudo), I can specify different
resolutions and the (correct) s3virge driver. The tests for 1024x768 and
the s3virge appear to run fine, but the resolution doesn't apparently
change, even when I close displayconfig-gtk with the "OK" button. When I
run displayconfig-gtk again immediately afterwards, the settings have
reverted to the failsafe defaults.

I've been using Linux for several years, and am fairly comfortable with
the command line and configuring things in general, but this "easy-to-
use" tool has me stumped. I'm not sure whether my ancient hardware is
part of the problem, but since it was working just fine on the previous
release of Ubuntu I'm not willing to upgrade it, which seems a bit
wasteful. The problem with the configuration failing to change/getting
forgotten every time doesn't seem to be hardware specific, although
since I've no idea what displayconfig-gtk is doing in the background
it's hard for me to say.

Attached are the output of 'sudo ddcprobe', 'sudo lspci -vv' and xrandr,
in the hopes that they are of help. If I can provide any extra
information, let me know.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-04-20 Thread PeteDonnell
I'm experiencing the same hard freeze with kernel 2.6.24-16. No wireless
here, just onboard ethernet. The same system worked just fine under
Gutsy, the problem's only started since upgrading to Hardy. My graphics
card is an old S3 Virge. Crashes usually appear when watching Youtube in
Firefox, but also have occured when watching videos from a locally
attached USB drive. System appears stable under light load though - I
stupidly uninstalled the Gutsy kernel not long after the upgrade, before
I became aware of this problem, so I haven't been able to test the
system with the old kernel. The computer is totally unresponsive, the
pointer doesn't move etc, and appears offline from when scanned by other
computers on the network.

The weirdest thing (to me at least) is that after the computer has been
power cycled (the only way to get it to respond again) the BIOS sequence
hangs. The hard drive light goes on and stays on, but the BIOS doesn't
go on to detect the hard drives. The only way to get round this appears
to be to hold down the power button for five seconds until the machine
shuts down, then leave it for 10 minutes or so, and then turn it back
on. After this it appears to behave normally, until the next freeze.

There's a post on the forums that appears to be describing the same problem:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=725669
As suggested on there I tried booting with 'noapic nolapic irqpoll noirqdebug',
but this didn't help. I don't have a great deal of time to troubleshoot, but
would like to help in sorting this out if there's any other information I can
provide.

[Bug 218791] Re: displayconfig-gtk settings don't persist

2008-04-20 Thread PeteDonnell
Okay, I managed to get an older version of xorg.conf working, which
while not ideal at least makes the computer usable again.

It seems the problem wasn't so much with displayconfig-gtk failing to
preserve the settings as it was with xrandr/new display config system
not supporting s3virge (at least as far as I can tell). While it's
understandable that development effort hasn't been focused on such an
old chipset, and the new user-friendly method of configuring X is a good
idea, it would be nice if there was a better fallback method available
for setups that aren't supported by the new tool. While the old method
of running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to configure X wasn't exactly
user-friendly, it was still a lot easier than writing an xorg.conf by
hand!

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-05-03 Thread PeteDonnell
I just had a thought: a number of people have suggested that this may be
disk I/O related, and some people have apparently been running the live
CD without problems. Has anyone tried doing a persistent install on a
USB stick, e.g. as on http://t-skariah.blogspot.com/2008/04/ubuntu-804
-hardy-heron-on-usb.html ? It might help to verify whether the bug was
IDE/SATA related.

Also, would it possible for someone (preferrably officially, but
unofficially is better than not at all) to package up an earlier version
of the kernel? I know there's been some discussion on this thread as to
what the best thing to do is, and I agree that just giving up on the
problem and going back to an earlier kernel isn't a viable longterm
solution. However, given how difficult to track down this problem is
proving and how frustrating it is for those experiencing it, a properly
set up package of an earlier kernel (e.g. 2.6.18) as an interim measure
would be very helpful. As it is, the computer I'm experiencing the bug
on is essentially unusable. This is a real shame, I just installed Hardy
on another computer and it runs beautifully, I am very impressed by how
well everything's working when this bug doesn't appear. I would offer to
build a package this myself, but while I can just about compile and
install a custom kernel, I have almost no experience of building
packages, nor do I know how to set up a standard "generic" kernel. I
suppose it's even possible that such kernel would still experience the
same bug, but that in itself would tell us something useful.

[Bug 128945] Segmentation fault on PowerPC

2007-07-28 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

$ mp3val -v
MP3val 0.1.4

Running Feisty server edition on PowerPC (Mac Mini G4), all packages up
to date.

Program segfaults every time it is fed a file to process, even on CBR
files with id3v1 that validate under mp3check. When testing the same
files on another computer, the x86 package of mp3val works fine.

I've not seen the bug since Scilab 4.0 made its way into the
repositories, it doesn't occur on any of the Feisty boxes I use.

[Bug 136994] Please make 0.1-RC1 or later of roundcube available in repositories

2007-09-03 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

In the latest version of roundcube currently available via apt
(0.1-beta2-0ubuntu1) there is an extremely annoying bug, which causes
the session to timeout while composing a message. In practical terms,
this means that unless a draft is saved very frequently (more frequently
than roundcube's default auto-save feature), there is a significant
chance the message being written will be lost, and the user will have to
relogin. This is an acknowledged upstream bug, which has been fixed in
more recent releases, the latest release being currently RoundCube
0.1-RC1. According to packages.ubuntu.com, gutsy is still using the same
buggy beta version currently available in Feisty. If this package could
be updated to RC1 it would improve the use of roundcube a lot for many
users. I'm not sure how this would fit into the release schedule, I see
that the deadline for new packages to go into the universe repository
has already passed, but this is more a bugfix than a new package.

[Bug 131321] distmp3host fails to start on i386

2007-08-09 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

To reproduce, install distmp3 via apt. At this point distmp3host can be
started by means of its initscript '/etc/init.d/distmp3 start'. Reboot
the computer. Now distmp3host cannot be started, running 'sudo
/etc/init.d/distmp3 start' or the command 'distmp3host' does nothing,
returns without error or any other output (even when run with the -d
debug flag), but a check of running processes via 'ps aux | grep
distmp3' reveals that distmp3host is not running.

I've tested this on two i386 boxes with fairly different setups and got
the same behaviour. I also have a PowerPC box which runs distmp3, but as
it's acting as a live server I can't reboot it to test whether
distmp3host can't be started after reboot on this architecture.

Removing distmp3 via apt and then reinstalling it seems to restart
distmp3host successfully, and it can be stopped and restarted by the
initscript without problem.

[Bug 131321] Re: distmp3host fails to start on i386

2007-08-10 Thread PeteDonnell
The PowerPC server had to be rebooted for another reason after all, and
it turns out the problem is the same, this isn't just an x86 problem.
distmp3host can't be started, but if the package is removed and re-added
it works fine (presumably until the next reboot).

[Bug 53877] Re: kppp does not assign proper default gateway

2007-06-11 Thread PeteDonnell
I can confirm this under Feisty. I have an ethernet network at home,
which normally connects via a modem router. The router IP is the default
gateway. Recently the DSL connection was unavailable, and we had to use
dialup. The connection was established (although pppd always crashed on
the first connection attempt, and a second attempt had to be made, which
always succeeded), but gateway problems prevented access to the
internet.

I found two solutions: 'sudo route add default ppp0', which is very
inconvenient, particularly as many of the users of the computer don't
have admin access, and editing the file /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options to
include the lines "defaultroute" and "replacedefaultroute". Prior to
this edit, the file contained only the line "noauth". In my opinion,
these options should probably be included by default.

[Bug 52573] Re: GTK+ apps show wrong scrollbars

2007-03-17 Thread PeteDonnell
I've attached a screenshot of the problem. Can't provide steps to
reproduce it, as stated above this only occurs on one of my boxes. It
could possibly be a side-effect of a problematic upgrade, one of the
dist-upgrades crashed partway through (I can't remember exactly what the
cause was, something to do with running an smp kernel back before it was
obsoleted by the generic kernel), so maybe the recovery from that caused
problems with things not being cleaned up properly.

As far as I'm concerned this bug can be closed/WONTFIXed, as it's a very
minor issue and seems not to affect many people. I've not found any
programs that are affected other than Firefox.

[Bug 95167] "Start New Session" from Gnome doesn't work when kdm is the default display manager

2007-03-23 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

Apologies if this is a dupe, I was unable to find a previous version of
it.

Steps to reproduce:
Install ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop.
Choose kdm as the default login manager.
Log in to a Gnome session.
Select "Start New Session" from Gnome menu.
New session fails to start.

However, if you log in to a KDE session, the Switch User/Start New
Session works fine, even if you want to log in to Gnome on the second
session. There is particularly a problem if someone has started a Gnome
session, then gone away and locked the computer. In KDE this isn't a
problem as a subsequent user can just start a new session and use their
own login. Presumably switching to a terminal via Ctrl-Alt-Fx and
launching a new session by hand would work, although I haven't tested
it, but that's way beyond the tech level of most of the users of the
computer I have where this is a problem.

I realise this may well be a problem with Gnome and kdm not working well
together, independent of Ubuntu.

[Bug 52573] Re: GTK+ apps show wrong scrollbars

2007-03-23 Thread PeteDonnell
Okay, I need to make an apology. After some more hunting, I found in
System Settings-Appearance an option under "GTK Styles and Fonts" to fix
the scrollbar issue. The scrollbars no longer overlap the buttons,
although I am still having a minor issue. It's visible in the attached
screenshot. The left side margin of the thumb (using the term from the
Wikipedia page on scrollbars) seems to get left behind when the thumb is
moved. When the mouse pointer crosses the edge of the scrollbar then the
margin catches up to the rest of the thumb. Again, this only seems to
happen in Firefox and not any other GTK2 apps.

When I tested Firefox on a different Kubuntu computer via ssh, the
scrollbars looked completely different, they appeared to be using the
native GTK2 scrollbars. Will try to test it directly (rather than over
ssh) later on.

As suggested, I tried a "Complete Removal" of Firefox via Synaptic,
followed by a reinstall, but this failed to fix the issue.

[Bug 52573] Re: GTK+ apps show wrong scrollbars

2007-02-11 Thread PeteDonnell
Yes, this problem is still occurring on one of the boxes I maintain, but
not on others. The box in question is fully up-to-date, running the i386
version of release 6.10. It was originally installed with Kubuntu
version 5.10 and has been dist-upgraded twice since then. The other
boxes were originally installed with Kubuntu 6.06 or Ubuntu 6.10, which
I'm guessing is the reason that they aren't affected.

[Bug 84570] Postscript files fail to open in separate KGhostView from Konqueror

2007-02-11 Thread PeteDonnell
Public bug reported:

So far as I can tell, by default in KDE, clicking on a .ps file opens it
in KGhostView embedded in the Konqueror window. When I try to open a .ps
with a different program by right-clicking, the Konqueror "Open With"
menu is empty except for "Other...". This is despite the fact that
according to the document type properties (right click->Properties, and
select the wrench icon), Postscript documents are associated with
KGhostView or "Document Viewer".

When I select "Other...", and browse for KGhostView, I cannot find a
link for KGhostView in the Ubuntu shortcuts, only under
Debian->Apps->Viewers. When KGhostView is selected, it fails to launch
with the message "KDEInit could not launch filename.ps". However, if
KGhostView is launched separately, and the file is opened via the
KGhostView Open File dialogue it works fine.

If you'd like more information I can to try to provide it. I'm running
the i386 version of Kubuntu 6.10, with everything up to date.

[Bug 47760] Re: firefox scrollbar under kubuntu is broken

2006-06-12 Thread PeteDonnell
I have also encountered this bug. I'm not sure which theme I'm using,
but it appears not to be plastik. I was using the default theme under
Kubuntu 5.10, and recently upgraded to 6.06, at which point I think the
bug first appeared.

The extra scroll buttons appear in other applications (notably
Konqueror) but do not exhibit the same buggy behaviour, although I don't
think they were there before the upgrade from 5.10 to 6.06.
