[Bug 199393] Re: servicemenu for amarok has an invalid menu entry "addAsPodcast"

I confirm that installing the deb from -proposed (sudo apt-get install
dolphin=0.9.2-0ubuntu6.1) fixes the bug.

[Bug 34043] Re: Nvidia binary driver requires Option "NvAGP" "1" for reliable suspend/resume.

2008-07-28 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
The problem is still present in hardy, all -updates. The setting Option
"NvAGP" "1" is still required to wake up from hibernation. Observations:

- Different nvidia drivers are alike - all need the setting.

- The problem is present in Kubuntu and Ubuntu, also in a fresh install.

- The problem is present with two different cards: MX400 and Geforce
6200.

- In xorg.conf, Option "NvAGP" "1" must be present - NOT Option "NvAGP"
"True". I can't explain it, it's very weird.

- I get "NVRM: not using NVAGP, an AGPGART backend is loaded!" in dmesg
when setting this. STILL the setting is required (Xorg.log has "Use of
NVIDIA internal AGP requested"). This is weird, I can't explain it.

- When NvAGP is set to "1", other quirks in acpi-default or elsewhere
are not required - hibernation just works.

- This is a VIA chipset in a desktop laptop (not laptop). Most likely,
this problem is a related to some VIA bug. "dmesg | grep -i agp" yields:

[ 35.054019] Linux agpgart interface v0.102
[ 35.206112] agpgart: Detected VIA KT400/KT400A/KT600 chipset

[Bug 238212] Re: F-spot crashes when uploading to picasaweb

2008-09-28 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
F-spot in hardy crashed for me, too. The problem in my case was that I
entered incorrect login information. A work-around is to remove the
offending entry in your gnome-keyring, which can be easily done through
Applications / Preferences / Passwords / Passwords.

[Bug 186264] Re: keyboard randomly goes dead; takes a logout to restore functionality.

2008-07-20 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
I get the same symptoms, also in Kubuntu (hardy). I think this has
nothing to do with hal, but is rather a KDE thing. Alex, yes on my box

KDE accessibility settings?

Re: [Bug 106730] Re: New mail is not noticed in IMAP subfolders

2008-05-17 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
I take it back. In my case, the problem was due to courier-imap being
configured to only watch INBOX for changes. This setting:

IMAP_CHECK_ALL_FOLDERS=1

in /etc/courier/imapd fixes this. So in many cases, this problem may not
be related to thunderbird, but to the IMAP server being thrifty.

[Bug 52670] Re: Kubuntu setting default components don't affect gnome/gtk apps

2008-05-19 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
For the record, to have hardy's Thunderbird open http links in Opera, I
had to change "/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command" (and the
corresponding "https" setting), despite this being Kubuntu. Gconf-editor
wasn't even installed.

x-www-browser didn't have any effect.

2008-06-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Adam Spain's fix (the packages in your PPA) works well for me. Step to
test: Open Dolphin, open a directory with XML files (example:
/usr/share/mime/multipart/); move mouse over XML file. If dolphin
doesn't bark, it's fixed.

FWIW, an SRU is most definitely warranted. Thanks, Adam.

[Bug 409403] [NEW] Bad generic name in .desktop

2009-08-05 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smplayer

The program's description reads: "A great MPlayer front-end" in
/usr/share/applications/smplayer.desktop. It shows up in, for example,
KDE's Kicker, and I'm sure in other places.

Though smplayer is indeed great, this evaluation doesn't belong to its
description.

The fact that it is implemented as an front-end to mplayer in immaterial
to the description of the package's functionality.

A better description might be 'Media player'. I think improving the
generic description is important, as smplayer is indeed one of the most
user-friendly media players available.

so that subsequent updates re-build the kernel module:

[Bug 40660] Re: cannot open properties

2006-07-06 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
I'm experiencing the same bug. German Ubuntu dapper (no updates), same
version as Danno, upgraded from breezy.

Choosing "properties" from a printer's context menu makes gnome-cups-
manager unresponsive. Restarting cupsys, as reported above, seems to
help.

[Bug 150690] gnome-panel workspace switcher less functional with compiz

2007-10-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-compiz-manager

When using metacity, I could do the following in the gnome workplace switcher
apllet (bottom right corner of the screen):
- drag windows to another virtual desktop
- cycle virtual desktops by using the mouse wheel on the switcher applet.

Both are very useful, neither of them works in compiz. I'm using the
"cube" plugin in CCSM, but using "plan" doesn't change the behavior.

Running gutsy with all updates. This is a regression in functionality
because gutsy defaults to compiz.

[Bug 150217] Re: Distorted video playback

2007-10-09 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
The same problem is present here. The distortion looks as if the screen
is updating too slowly, or not synchronized to the refresh rate. That
is, you see parts of the old picture and part of the new picture at the
same time.

The problem only occurs when compiz is enabled (no matter if normal or
extra effects).

The problem occurs in all programs using xvideo, mplayer -vo xv

mplayer -vo x11 works, but it doesn't support fullscreen, so it's
useless.

Re: [Bug 150690] gnome-panel workspace switcher less functional with compiz

2007-10-10 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
I just found that there is a difference between the notion of a large
desktop ("horizontal virtual size") and and that of virtual desktops in
the General Options section of ccsm. If you use the latter, then you
_can_ use the mouse wheel in the panel, and also drag windows around.

But a large desktop in compiz is vastly superior to separate virtual
desktops, so setting this is a bad workaround.

Conclusion: The workplace switcher should work with the large desktop,
too.

[Bug 151674] compiz+nvidia: tearing in xvideo (totem/mplayer/VLC)

2007-10-11 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

The distortion looks as if the screen is updating too slowly, or not

I can confirm this bug. kde-window-decorator crashes as described, on my

This is on RC, or on a up-to-date system. I think importance "low" is
considerably too low, as it makes kde+compiz a pain to use. Please try

[Bug 150695] Re: compiz: switch virtual desktop using mouse wheel

2007-11-25 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
This is, I think, a problem with compizconfig-settings-manager. CCSM
won't write the relevant gconf setting, but it works alright if you set
it manually, like this: (rotating when using the mouse wheel at the
screen edge)

gconftool --type=list --list-type=string --set \
/apps/compiz/plugins/rotate/allscreens/options/rotate_left_edge \
[Top,TopRight,Right,BottomRight,Bottom,BottomLeft,Left,TopLeft]
gconftool --type=left --list-type=string --set \
/apps/compiz/plugins/rotate/allscreens/options/rotate_right_edge \
[Top,TopRight,Right,BottomRight,Bottom,BottomLeft,Left,TopLeft]

[Bug 151674] Re: compiz+nvidia: tearing in xvideo (totem/mplayer/VLC)

2007-11-16 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Enabling "Sync to VBlank" in CCSM has the drawback of breaking resuming
from suspend-to-disk. What's more, it doesn't really remove the tearing.

What does help is using the Compiz Video Plugin and a player that
supports it. As to players that do support this, I'm aware only of
mplayer using some patches found on the net. Instructions are here:
http://smspillaz.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/unlocking-the-full-video-
potential-of-your-video-card/

In any event, this is almost certainly a bug in NVidia's binary blob, as
evidenced by the fact that on nvnews.net forums, there are similar
reports in other distributions. In fact they've acknowledged this and
claim to fix this in a later release. NVidia's internal bug number is
353274. As far as I know, this isn't fixed in the latest driver release.

[Bug 34043] Re: Suspend and Hibernate solution for nvidia binary drivers

2007-04-07 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Please try to fix this before the release if you can. I can cofirm that
the bug is still present in current feisty. When resuming from
hibernation, it crashes when switching to graphics mode (num-lock
doesn't react any more). See also #79286 for logs.

However, the solution mentioned above works: force the "NvAGP" option in
xorg.conf. This is what it looks like for me (after using restricted-
manager and the adding the option):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Standardgrafikkarte"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "NvAGP" "1"
EndSection

It is not necessary to disable "POST_VIDEO" in /etc/default/acpi-support
(although it doesn't do any harm either).

After that, it works without hassles.

fine.

[Bug 97551] update to uptodate feisty breaks hibernation

2007-03-28 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

After updating my system using update-manager today, hibernation is
broken. Updates included linux-2.6.20-13-generic and acpi-support 0.94.
Booting the old kernel (-9) does not fix this, so I suspect the changes

[Bug 84561] new mplayer gives garbage audio output

Public bug reported:

As a hint, compiling the current tarball from mplayerhq, you get a

[Bug 66637] Re: Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - "no valid swap signature, try swapon -a"

2006-12-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
To repeat what was said above- this is not just a problem of
hibernation. Effectively, after a dapper->edgy upgrade, the swap
partition is lost. Ubuntu does not work well without a swap partition,
as it wil grind to a halt if you run more than a few programs at once,
even at 256GB RAM. For the unsuspecting user, this bug results in
strange halts or freezes, wondering why edgy is much more unstable than
its predecessor. This makes the problem critical, and I agree with the
poster above that it is puzzling to see so little developer feedback on
this bug-report.

Some more observations:

* Symptoms include "free" displaying no available swap space and "swapon
-a" failing with "no such device"

* This happens even if the user doesn't "mkswap" manually; upgrading is
quite enough.

* This also (obviously) prevents hibernation from working (though trying
to hibernate does not, for the most part, fail gracefully).

* Trying the fix above (using mkswap and update-initramfs) actually
resulted in my root partition being corrupted: the partition could only
be mounted ro, and fsck'ing made things worse yet. As to why this
happened, I have no idea. It might very well be another unrelated bug.

In conclusion, it seems that this is a good candidate for a Edgy point
release (if this can be thusly fixed), or at least a remark inside the
release notes.

[Bug 73887] Re: Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well

2006-12-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
My take on this is a lot easier. Linux does not work well if you don't
give it a swap device, pretty much regardless of the size of your RAM.
This explains why you experience stability problems even though you have
plenty of memory.

Assuming you did have a swap device on dapper, this is most likely a
duplicate of #66637. See that bug as to how to make it work again
(mkswap your swap device, put the newly generated UUID into the swap
slot in /etc/fstab).

[Bug 66637] Re: Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - "no valid swap signature, try swapon -a"

2006-12-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
One more thing: I noticed that the UUID put into /etc/fstab was indeed
correct - still "swapon -a" did not work. This seems to imply that there
are some incompatibilites between the swap signature used in dapper and
edgy, possibly related to hibernation (hence the remarks above about
swap space being corrupted).

** Summary changed:

- Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - "no valid swap signature,
try swapon -a"
+ After upgrade from dapper to edgy, swap space is discarded, system fails to
hibernate (invalid swap signature)

[Bug 66637] Re: After running mkswap, swap space is discarded, system fails to hibernate (invalid swap signature)

2006-12-12 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
Scott, thanks for you reply. You seem to claim the following about this
bug:

1) It appears not only after a dapper->edgy upgrade.
2) It appears only after running "mkswap" on your swap partition without
changing fstab accordingly.

You're right with the first point, this issue seems to be more general
than I thought. Sorry for changing the subject. About the second point,
though, I'm not so sure. I had the exact same problems described here
without running anything manually (unless the swap parition is
initialized in the automatic update). Also, please note that the bug
submitter mentions an upgrade in his report, but not running mkswap.

Please re-read the bug's history, and also note the number of
duplicates. I could file another report, but that seems both grauitious
and harmful given the above.
