One more thing: I noticed that the UUID put into /etc/fstab was indeed correct - still "swapon -a" did not work. This seems to imply that there are some incompatibilites between the swap signature used in dapper and edgy, possibly related to hibernation (hence the remarks above about swap space being corrupted).
