[Bug 371282] Re: Numpad unusable even with numlock if mouse keys are enabled

2009-05-12 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
I think I was wrong, I mistook the absence of function for the num pad
cause there is a small delay before the mouse starts moving so it only
seems that it doesn't work.

2009-01-27 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: nautilus
+ Binary package hint: nautilus, mv

- Can not change the name of a file called foo to Foo on FAT32 file-
- systems because of the case-insensitive feature of FAT32.
+ It is not possible to change the capitialization of filenames on a FAT32
+ volume. This is a bug because, although FAT32 is not case-sensitive, it
+ still have the ability to preserve the case of filenames.
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Create file "test" on FAT32 volume
+ 2. Try to rename new file to "TEST" using nautilus or mv
+
+ Actual results:
+ Displays an error 'The name "TEST" is already used in this folder. Please use
a different name'
+
+ Expected results:
+ The filename should change to new requested filename
+
+ Does this happen every time?
+ Yes

It is not a compiz bug, I removed compiz from my system totally, first

wiping it off the hard drive through the packet manager. Compiz is so
buggy I could not stand using it, getting in the way of Quake Wars,
being just in general slow and behaving unexpectedly. I filed several

[Bug 367372] Re: Gedit uses 100% of the CPU while editing files

2009-05-10 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
Yes, I still get it!
I have tried to isolate the problem, the cpu hogging occurs whether gedit is
the only running application launched by me personally or not. I am not using
any font hintning, and only font grayscale smoothing, all visual effects turned
off.

The cpu hogging is dependant on what file I am editing and where in the
file. The hogging occurs writing anything between line 1 and line 12,
writing anything on any other line seemingly works fine.

In the follwing two screenshots, I am in progress of writing the if
statement on line 3.

2009-04-26 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Making changes to a file(typing or deleting characters) makes gedit consume
100% of the CPU power available.
I noticed this since I've installed Ubuntu 9.04.

I was poking in the fonts setting under the appearance preferences and I
thought I noticed a slight difference if I turn off all processing and
make the font glyph render without subpixel rendering and hinting.
However it is merely marginal. To make sure it was not the graphics
drivers I switched from the ati drivers to vesa but that did not help at
all.

[Bug 369766] [NEW] update manager is not responding

2009-04-30 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I can do a quick search in the Synaptic package manager. However then I
can not interact with the packets-managing widgets nor panel.

The autotomatic update manager window I can press update and it
seemingly does however I can then not close the window, the update
manager seems to likewise get unresponsive and no further interaction
can be done, meanwhile the mouse icon changes to busy in that window and
I am forced to be kill the update-manager through the console.

Operation not supported Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use.
Choose one action: Choice 1: if you have Windows then disconnect the external
devices by clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' Icon in the Windows taskbar
then shutdown Windows cleanly. Choice 2: If you don't have Windows then you can
use the 'force' option for your own responsibility. For example type on the
command line: mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/disk -o force Or add the option
to the relevant row in /etc/fstab file: /dev/sdb1 /media/disk ntfs-3g force 0 0

and the second:
Unable to mount 300.1 GB media
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus-Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.

I can mount it by manually by writing what is instructed above in the

[Bug 340218] Re: Automount of maxtor 300GB Extern USB HDD failed

2009-03-10 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
More importantly it is an unfriendly solution, if Ubuntu is to cater to
the common non-geek then this obstacle for using ones system and
hardware has to be corrected.

It is not my system, I can deal with writing things on the command line,
it is my computer-inept brother's system and he can not deal with this,
he is one of the common non-geeks. From what he has observed from me
using Ubuntu and other Linux distributions, he likes it but this kind of
problems makes his believes in Linux being a good system to use falter.
Luckily I run dual-boot so I'll make sure to try the suggestion above.
Still I can not emphasize enough, automounting without any problems
whatsoever is essential for the experience of the common non-geek.

No, it is not glib that does this.
The terminal also shows the same behavior:

[Bug 315782] Re: Change of capitalization in filenames on FAT32

2009-01-27 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
I posed a question where to begin digging on the Linux kernel mailing
list, the filesystem maintainer, OGAWA Hirofumi replied as below:

This is known issue for case-insensitive fs. (BTW, CI is case-
insensitive).

To allow rename("filename", "FILENAME"), we have to fix two issues. One
is vfs_rename(), it doesn't call ->rename handler if inodes was same.

Another one is fs handlers, it has to handle dentry->d_name change while
someone is using it, and/or it has to care about dentry alias. Because,
the inode of both of names is same, and dentry should/may be same.

BTW, those is kernel side issues. There is some userland issues too
(e.g. IIRC, "mv" command check stat->st_ino before call rename(2)).

I also believe
http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v2.6.28.2/fs/fat/namei_vfat.c#L53 is a key
element to this bug.

[Bug 317160] [NEW] The physical power button quick-launch will not initiate after using VLC

2009-01-14 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

Pressing the physical power button on the computer will normally bring up the
"Shut down the computer"-dialog where I can choose what actions to take such as
shutdown, restart, suspend and hibernate. However after using the media player
VLC(Videolan) a notice-popup window is instead brought up saying:
Request to do policy action
Multiple applications have stopped the policy action from taking place.
vlc : Playing some media.
vlc : Playing some media.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 upgraded from 6.06 through 8.04 on my Dell inspiron 5100
laptop.
Admittedly upgraded 8.10 is different from installed from scratch 8.10(I used
to have an installed from scratch 8.10 version before I decided to play around
and because my CD-ROM reader is broken I had to upgrade from 6.06). For one
thing the network status icon on the notification area is different and the Log
Out Button application is not the same that comes as default with installed
from scratch 8.10.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152303

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Using 9.10 Beta
During an overwrite of a file by -drag and drop-ing a file from file-roller to
the desktop or a folder open with nautilus does not produce a query dialogue
asking whether to overwrite the existing file or not.

The existing file is simply overwritten, I know this as the date and
size changed.

Steps to reproduce:
Open something compressed with file-roller
Drag a file from file-roller to the gnome desktop
Again drag the same file

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Invalid

2009-10-13 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

Using Karmic Beta
I installed SCIM in my ignorance and after I had been informed that 9.10 uses
ibus I unistalled SCIM.
However the input method options drop down menu still contains the various SCIM
options even though SCIM is uninstalled.

Step to reproduce:
Install SCIM
Check the language admin settings to see SCIM
uninstall SCIM
Recheck(even after restart), the options are still present

[Bug 419663] Re: devkit-disks-daemon assert failure: devkit-disks-daemon: atasmart.c:2701: sk_disk_set_blob: Assertion `blob' failed.

2009-10-14 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
I thought it was fixed as of yesterday's update as the usb drives,
sticks and CDs mounted yet again but today it crashed again, I was doing
nothing special, simply moving files on the desktop and nautilus.
