[Bug 184466] gnome-panel breaks after disabling Xgl in gutsy

2008-01-19 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I disabled Xgl by creating the file "~/.config/xserver-xgl/disable".
After restarting X, I got a lot of error messages such as:

The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet". Do you want to delete the applet from your
configuration?

The applets in question did not load. The error boxes would close
spontaneously if not clicked, and often would not respond to interaction
with the mouse anyway. The problem resolved by re-enabling Xgl.

If the offending applets (mixer, tomboy notes, trashcan etc) were
removed from the panel there were no errors. Trying to add them back
onto the panel reproduced the error messages.

My box is an AMD64 3800+ with nVidia 6600 graphics (repository nvidia
driver). It has been upgraded all the way from dapper (?breezy) over the
years and has had the various iterations of Xgl/compiz/beryl installed.
I am using metacity as a WM with no desktop effects at present.

I cannot understand why disabling Xgl should affect the loading of
gnome-panel applets.

** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 184466] Re: gnome-panel breaks after disabling Xgl in gutsy

2008-01-21 Thread Neil McPhail
Thanks Basilio. Rebooting seems to have solved the problem! I can't
remember the last time I had to do that on an Ubuntu box... :)

Do you think this was a dbus issue? I don't know how I'll reproduce this
now, so should we close this bug?

Exploring further, this issue happens with the default theme (which is
Yaru-MATE-Light, I think) but not with Ambient-MATE, where the "Close"
button displays correctly.

[Bug 1860512] Re: Suspend unreliable (possibly FUSE related)

2020-02-17 Thread Neil McPhail
I can partially reproduce this on Ubuntu Mate 20.04 development release,
updated from 19.10. Hardware is a ThinkPad X230.

Steps to reproduce:

- mount an rclone remote drive
- do something which keeps the mountpoint busy (e.g. open the file manager and
navigate to a photos folder on the remote drive so the thumbnailer kicks in)
- attempt to suspend

What should happen:

- Laptop suspends

What actually happens:

- mouse pointer becomes unresponsive for about 30 seconds. WiFi status
icon changes to disconnected for a few seconds. Laptop does not suspend.
WiFi reconnects and mouse pointer becomes responsive again.

Note that simply making the fuse mount with rclone does not inhibit
suspend; the problem only occurs if the mount point is busy.

[Bug 1864293] [NEW] Booting 5.4.0-14 drops to initramfs shell on machine with LVM and full disk encryption

2020-02-22 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Mate 20.04 dev release, upgraded from 19.10. LVM/disk encrypion
had been set up from the 19.10 installer and had been working perfectly.

Today, when I try to boot, the splash screen stalls at the throbber and
doesn't open a prompt for my encryption key. After a minute or so it
drops to the initramfs shell. Rebooting without "silent splash" on the
cmdline shows that `/dev/mapper/vgubuntu--mate-root` cannot be found,
and running `ls /dev/mapper` outputs only `control`.

Rebooting with the 5.4.0-12 kernel works without any problems.

I've added `mitigations=off` to my default boot flags some time ago, if
that's relevant?

[Bug 1863532] Re: Invoking "python" brings inappropriate response from command-not-found when python3 installed

2020-02-24 Thread Neil McPhail
Indeed. It offers python3 version 3.7.5-1ubuntu1 as a solution which is
not appropriate as python3 version 3.8.0-3 is already installed and does
not provide a `python` command.

The python-is-python3 solution sounds like a sensible way forward. There
be dragons, I suspect.

[Bug 1854225] Re: Kernel oops and system lock up when invoking wg-quick up

2020-02-07 Thread Neil McPhail
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected focal

** Description changed:

On 2 occasions over the past week I have had full system crashes after
running "wg-quick up wg0". On the terminal, the command does not
complete (i.e. it does not return to the prompt), the fans on my laptop
start whirring and the system gradually becomes unresponsive before my
desktop crashes and the system becomes completely unresponsive. On both
occasions I opened another window to run "top" to see what process was
consuming resources but "top" never actually runs. On the second
occasion I managed to run "dmesg" before the system crashed completely
and saw multiple lines of text about a kernel oops and red-highlighted
  text about a null-pointer dereference.

I could reboot with "Alt-PrtScr_REISUB". On reboot I was confronted with
the "system problem detected" dialog, but selecting the "report" option
didn't seem to do anything. I have 2 reports in /var/crash from the last
oops which I will attach to this report.

I cannot reproduce this on demand. Most of the time, wg-quick performs
normally. On both occasions the laptop had recently woken from suspend,
but invoking "wg-quick" after waking from suspend doesn't trigger it on
demand. On the first occasion I was running with stock boot options. On
the second, I was running with "mitigations=off" as an experiment.

[Bug 1869475] [NEW] Terminal window shrinks when other app is opened/closed to the dock

2020-03-28 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu mate 20.04 running on a ThinkPad X230 (intel graphics) at
1366x768 resolution using the "Redmond" layout.

Steps to reproduce:

- Open Mate Terminal in standard 80x24 window
- (My font is set to Monospace Regular 10 with "show menu" ticked)
- run `for i in {1..23}; do echo $i; done`
- Open Telegram (I have the non-snap version installed)
- Repeatedly close (using the X button) and re-open Telegram from the dock so
it maximises/minimises
- Watch the terminal window as you do this

What should happen:

- terminal window should not be affected beyond gaining/losing focus

What actually happens:

- Menu bar in terminal window disappears and reappears. Terminal window
shrinks and lines are lost from the top of the terminal

I think this might be a marco bug. It happens with and without
compositing. I wonder if it is related to the switching of focus?

2020-03-28 Thread Neil McPhail
Here's a little video clip. I've logged out of telegram for privacy
reasons (and it doesn't minimise to the dock when logged out) but you
can see the effect just by opening the app.

[Bug 1713586] Re: gnome-software displays wildly inaccurate estimate of package size when a certain deb file is double-clicked in nautilus

2017-12-07 Thread Neil McPhail
I installed gnome-software-common_3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.7_all.deb,
gnome-software_3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.7_amd64.deb and ubuntu-
software_3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.7_amd64.deb. I cannot locate the original
deb which cause the problem but I tried robert-ancell's test package
before and after the new packages. I can confirm the bug is fixed for
me.

Thanks!

[Bug 1713586] [NEW] gnome-software displays wildly inaccurate estimate of package size when a certain deb file is double-clicked in nautilus

2017-08-28 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

I have created a large deb file of game assets for Quake 4 using the
game-data-packager tool in Ubuntu 16.04. If I double-click on this file
in Nautilus, gnome-software opens to install the file. However, the file
size is incorrectly listed as over 18 exabytes (!) as per the screenshot
at https://ovh.themcphails.uk/index.php/s/0pcBDXU0zztzS6a . The output
from dpkg-deb and gdebi is as per http://termbin.com/32q7 .

I would expect the package size in gnome-software to roughly match the
package size listed (correctly) by dpkg-deb. 18 exabytes is a ludicrous
estimate - has there been a signed/unsigned error?

The deb package installs correctly with dpkg -i. I cannot attach the
file to this bug report as it is too large, and contains proprietary
code. The Quake 4 game files were obtained from GOG, and the windows
install file was unpacked by innoextract. The deb was created by game-
data-packager version 44.

Distro: Ubuntu 16.04
gnome-software version: 3.20.5

[Bug 1582433] Re: Dash does not handle .desktop files correctly if there are hyphens in the directory path

2016-07-13 Thread Neil McPhail
Thanks for your work on this, but I'm not sure it is fixed 100% yet. For
example:

$ cat ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/GOG.com/Might\ and\ Magic\
4-5/Might\ and\ Magic\ 4-5\ -\ World\ of\ Xeen\ \(Full\ Speech\).desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Might and Magic 4-5 - World of Xeen (Full Speech)
Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/neil/games/mm45/wine" wine
C:windowscommandstart.exe /Unix
/home/neil/games/mm45/wine/dosdevices/c:/users/Public/Start\\
Menu/Programs/GOG.com/Might\\ and\\ Magic\\ 4-5/Might\\ and\\ Magic\\ 4-5\\ -\\
World\\ of\\ Xeen\\ \\(Full\\ Speech\\).lnk
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Path=/home/neil/games/mm45/wine/dosdevices/c:/GOG Games/Might and Magic
4-5/DOSBOX
Icon=C399_goggame-1207661233.0

$ ag -g C399_goggame-1207 ~/.local/share/
/home/neil/.local/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/C399_goggame-1207661233.0.png
/home/neil/.local/share/icons/hicolor/256x256/apps/C399_goggame-1207661233.0.png
/home/neil/.local/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps/C399_goggame-1207661233.0.png
/home/neil/.local/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/C399_goggame-1207661233.0.png

But the correct icon does not show. Instead, I get the generic "toolbox"
icon as per screenshot attached. Oddly enough, my testcase in the
original posting does display the correct icon. Perhaps this is because
I specify the full path?

[Bug 1370190] Re: .desktop files in .local/share/applications not processed correctly

2016-05-16 Thread Neil McPhail
This bug seems to be related to paths under ~/.local/share/applications
which have hyphens in the directory path. This seems to cause corruption
of the icon parsing or title which is displayed in the dash. As an
example (on my 16.04 machine):

$ cat << EOF > test.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Hyphen test
Exec=/bin/true
Type=Application
Icon=/usr/share/icons/suru/apps/256/dash.png
EOF

$ chmod +x test.desktop
$ mkdir ~/.local/share/applications/hyphen-test
$ mv test.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/hyphen-test/

Now, open the dash and search for "hyphen". On my machine, I see the
correct icon but no title is displayed underneath.

$ mv ~/.local/share/applications/hyphen-test
~/.local/share/applications/hyphen

Searching for "hyphen" in the dash now shows an entry with the correct
icon and title (but also still shows the defunct previous entry without
title).

The effect of the hyphenated path seems variable. Some apps show the
wrong icon, some have a missing title, some have both errors.

[Bug 1370190] Re: .desktop files in .local/share/applications not processed correctly

2016-05-16 Thread Neil McPhail
The problem inly seems to be with hyphens in the directories. Hyphens in
the file itself are fine. See the screenshot - Might and Magic 4&5 has
had a desktop file installed under a subdirectory with a hyphen, whereas
Heroes of Might and Magic has a desktop file in the root directory but
contains a hyphen in the filename. The latter is shown correctly, but
the desktop files in the former directory are not shown properly.

[Bug 1582433] [NEW] Dash does not handle .desktop files correctly if there are hyphens in the directory path

2016-05-16 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

The Unity dash can fail to display the icon or title from a .desktop
file correctly if it resides under a directory containing a hyphen
character.

As an example (on my 16.04 machine):

$ cat << EOF > test.desktop

Name=Hyphen test

[Bug 1559340] [NEW] Searching for "gedit" in dash brings up sexually explicit images from online search

2016-03-19 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

As reported on #ubuntu IRC channel -

At present, searching for "gedit" in the dash on 15.10 brings up sexually
explicit images from Wikipedia -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genital_modification_and_mutilation#/media/File:Klitorisvorhautpiercing_und_Piercing_der_inneren_Schamlippen.jpg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genital_wart#/media/File:SOA-Condylomata-acuminata-around-anus.jpg

Whilst online searching is going to be disabled by default on 16.04,
consideration must be given to disabling online search by default on
older releases. This is not the first bug to be filed about this topic,
but may be unique in that (a) the search was for a default Ubuntu
package, and (b) the returned images were particularly explicit.

This doesn't seem to be fixed 100% in OTA10:

1) Play a track without a "#" in the path from the music app
2) Click the "Search" area in the "Songs" tab, and search for your track with a

2016-04-26 Thread Neil McPhail
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash' doesn't seem to be
doing anything useful. I get the "Ubuntu has experienced an error"
dialog but, when I click "send", the dialog just closes and nothing else
happens. I'm not sent to launchpad in the browser to file the bug
report. I've attached the output of "ps aux", and I can't see any
evidence of the crash reporter being active. Is there a better way to
send the crash file?

Although the importance of this bug is marked as "medium", it is a bug
which can damage hardware and surrounding equipment as unexpectedly-
vibrating joypads have a tendency to fall off surfaces.

[Bug 1573952] [NEW] Graphical update from 15.10->16.04 failed with apparent window manager crash

2016-04-23 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

This may be related to bug #1555237, although that is marked as "fix
released"

I was prompted to upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04 last night, by the
graphical updater. It disabled my PPAs, downloaded the packages and
began the install. When I looked again later, I had a dialog box giving
information on the networking changes in LXC, but the window manager
decorations had gone, unity sidebar was gone, top bar was gone, screen
and windows unresponsive to mouse clicks and alt-tab not working. There
was no way to switch to the dialog box to continue the update.

Running "ps aux | grep update" gave:

Don't hardcode a subnet which may be used by the user. Important differences
between lxcbr0 and lxdbr0: - The lxdbr0 bridge DOES NOT come with ANY

out of the box by way ofa tiny HTTP PROXY server running on an IPv6
link-local address. - The user IS EXPECTED to configure the bridge to use an
UNUSED subneton their network. To configure lxdbr0 to your liking, please
run: dpkg-reconfigure -p medium lxd To stay on the old lxcbr0 bridge, make

I killed PID 15490, which allowed the install process to continue, but
without any graphical progress box. I had to monitor the upgrade process
in "top" and manually reboot when all the likely upgrade processes were
finished.

On rebooting into 16.04 and logging in, I had to reset compiz with
"dconf reset -f /org/compiz/ && setsid unity" to bring back my sidebar
and window decorations.

[Bug 1574102] [NEW] Regression (constant vibration of device) in xpad driver in Ubuntu 16.04

2016-04-23 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 16.04, I cannot launch Saints Row 2 or 3 from Steam
without constant vibration from my Xbox360 controller. The symptoms are
the same as outlined in https://github.com/paroj/xpad/issues/27. (I
believe that github user submits xpad patches to upstream.) If I compile
the f23507b version from that git repo, the problem resolves. This was
not an issue on 15.10.

[Bug 1574102] Re: Regression (constant vibration of device) in xpad driver in Ubuntu 16.04

2016-04-23 Thread Neil McPhail
You'll see an "URB submitted while active" error in my dmesg when
running the older driver. These messages were frequent on previous
Ubuntu releases. I think the current patches were to "fix" this, but
seem to have prompted the regression.

[Bug 1484124] [NEW] Errors in Ubuntu Content API documentation

2015-08-12 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

From
https://developer.ubuntu.com/api/apps/qml/sdk-15.04/Ubuntu.Content.index/
as accessed on 2015-08-12:

Under "Definitions", the definition of "Content types" is confusingly
recursive ("Content types: A set of well-known content types").

Under "Reporting Bugs", there is a typo in the text ("If you find any
problems with the [MISSING_WORD_OR_PHRASE] or this documentation, please
file a bug in Ubuntu Content API"), and the bug reporting link points to
the upstream content-hub package, which doesn't accept bug reports.

[Bug 1460149] Re: Visible corruption in SDL apps (Neverball, Neverputt) on Nexus 4 / Nexus 7.

2015-06-24 Thread Neil McPhail
I get similar corruption running Baldur's Gate (via GemRB and SDL2) on
krillin. The intro videos play well, but when the main menu appears the
shell bleeds into it. The picture clears when you begin to swipe. I'll
attach some pics as it is hard to explain.

[Bug 1459259] [NEW] Apps using OpenAL on the Ubuntu Phone appear to have direct hardware access despite apparmor constraints

2015-05-27 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

I have been building some apps for the phone which use OpenAL. They will
play audio if running under the "audio" policy group. However, the
volume of audio is not controlled by the volume slider or "Silent mode"
switch and audio can continue to play if the app is backgrounded or
phone screen is switched off. After discussion on #ubuntu-touch it was
suggested this may imply the apps have direct hardware access, despite
apparmor constraints.

I do not know if this is a security vulnerability, so I will report it
as such to be safe.

Attached is a .click package build for Ubuntu phones (armhf). It
contains a small OpenAL example app borrowed from a blog site (source
code included in click) and bundles the current OpenAL lib from the
14.10 distribution. It runs under apparmor constraints, and is only
granted access to the "audio" group. The app would be automatically
accepted to the Ubuntu Store.

The audio will continue to play until the app is killed by the user. It
will play in silent mode, when in the background or when the screen is
off. The app has been tested on BQ and meizu devices running RTM and
vivid.

[Bug 1459259] Re: Apps using OpenAL on the Ubuntu Phone appear to have direct hardware access despite apparmor constraints

2015-05-27 Thread Neil McPhail
As far as I know, it _can_ use pulseaudio but don't know if that is what
is happening here. I had been told on the IRC channel that the reason it
was not responding to the volume control was because it was not using
pulse, and suggested it was directly accessing the hardware. I have no
idea how to confirm that but am happy to do any suggested debugging.

[Bug 1482613] [NEW] Apps with forced landscape orientation display the "wrong" way on the phone

2015-08-07 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8/+bug/1478637
which is probably the same issue, but for natively landscape orientated
devices.

When an app sets a forced-landscape mode, the phone must be rotated
clockwise from portrait mode to display it properly. This is a more
difficult movement than rotating anti-clockwise for people holding the
phone in their left hand (e.g. most right-handed people).

When an app forces landscape mode, the "top" of the landscape screen
should be the right of the portait-orientated screen.

[Bug 1479344] Re: Ubuntu Installer makes /boot partition too small on encrypted lvm setup

There are frequent visitors to the #ubuntu channel with "apt-get dist-

should provide a warning if the /boot partition is likely to be too
small to accommodate several kernels etc, and should not create a
frustratingly small /boot partition by default.

[Bug 1437355] [NEW] Icons lost from various apps after upgrade

2015-03-27 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

On upgrading my apps and operating system, I lost icons for the camera,
gallery, tagger and weather apps. The icons were blank on the Apps scope
and sidebar. The chain of events:

1) Got brand new bq phone last night. Added SIM in lower slot and microSD card.
Charged it but did not switch it on
2) Switched on for first time this morning. Changed language settings,
connected to wireless etc.
3) Added Ubuntu One and Google accounts
4) Made test phone call and played with scopes. All icons present
5) Took photo and looked at gallery app
6) Went to updates and selected "update all" for apps. Left phone to update
(screen went off). Switched screen back on. Couple of apps still updating.

*** I don't remember whether I opened the sidebar or Apps scope at this
point so don't know if icons were gone already ***

7) Selected "Update OS" and let it run in my pocket when taking dog for a walk
8) Checked phone - still on updating screen
9) Checked phone again: updated but icons for camera, gallery, tagger and
weather apps.
10) Rebooted phone - icons still missing
11) "Pulled to refresh" App scope - icons still missing
12) Ask for help on #ubuntu-touch on freenode:

09:19 < mcphail> Got my bq phone yesterday (!) but after system update I've
lost icons for camera, gallery, tagger and weather. How can I
 restore them?
09:26 < popey> mcphail: what version does it say in system settings -> about
   this phone -> OS.
09:26 < popey> Mine is Ubuntu 14.10 (r20)
09:27 < mcphail> popey: same as you
09:27 < popey> hmm
09:27 < popey> reboot it and see if it does it still
09:27 < popey> sounds very strange
09:27 < mcphail> popey: still same after reboot
09:28 < ogra_> mcphail, did you make it writable or tinker in any other way
with it on the low level ?
09:29 < mcphail> ogra_: nothing. Charged it overnight. Switched it on for first
time this morning. Set up ubuntu 1 and google accounts.
 Updated apps. Updated OS
09:29 < popey> is the wifi on?
09:30 < popey> in the app scope, what if you pull down to refresh?
09:30 < mcphail> popey: yes. wifi is on. Pull down on app scope doesn't refresh
 the icons
09:30 < popey> only some icons missing, not all?
09:30 < ogra_> you mean you dont get new content or does it literally not
   refresh the scope ?
09:31 < mcphail> ogra_: the scope rereshes but the icons don't reappear
09:32 < mcphail> popey: just missing camera, gallery, tagger and weather
09:39 < mcphail> popey: ogra_: anything you would like me to do with this
current image in the meantime which would help with debugging?
09:40 < popey> do you have a usb cable? can you adb shell into it?
09:40 < popey> be good to extract the unity8 logs I think
09:40 < mcphail> i'll enable dev options
09:40 < mcphail> ok, have adb shell
09:41 < popey> if you can just "mkdir ~/phablet_logs ; adb pull
/home/phablet/.cache/upstart ~/phablet_logs" we can look at
   them later
09:41 < popey> also tail ~/.cache/upstart/unity8.log and watch when you pull
down to refresh, see if you get any errors
09:43 < mcphail> popey: nothing added in the refresh
09:45 < mcphail> lots of camera icon erros in the logs
09:45 < popey> unity8-dash.log ?
09:45 < mcphail> application-click-com.ubuntu.camera_camera_3.0.0.516.log
09:46 < popey> that log gets written when the actual camera app is running
09:46 < mcphail> and unity8-dash
09:46 < mcphail> 234:Invalid size for QUrl(
"file:///opt/click.ubuntu.com/.click/users/phablet/com.ubuntu.camera/share/icons/camera-app.svg"
 ) QSize(-1, -1)
09:46 < popey> anything interesting in unity8-dash.log ?
09:52 < popey> mcphail: can you get a screenshot of these missing icons?
10:00 < popey> ok, lets take one of them for now, camera.
10:01 < popey> phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ click list | grep camera
10:01 < popey> com.ubuntu.camera 3.0.0.516
10:01 < popey> we're on the same version, right?
10:01 < mcphail> popey: yes
10:03 < popey> go to .local/share/applications
10:03 < mcphail> yep
10:03 < popey> cat *camera*
10:04 < popey> should be one big desktop file
10:04 < popey>
Icon=/usr/share/click/preinstalled/.click/users/@all/com.ubuntu.camera/share/icons/camera-app.svg
10:04 < popey> so ls that file, does it exist?
10:04 < popey> ls -l
/usr/share/click/preinstalled/.click/users/@all/com.ubuntu.camera/share/icons/camera-app.svg
10:04 < popey> -rw-r--r-- 1 clickpkg clickpkg 903965 Feb 18 18:39
/usr/share/click/preinstalled/.click/users/@all/com.ubuntu.camera/share/icons/camera-app.svg
10:05 < popey> if you md5sum it, you should get 7e93fe8ae1dd4cf68de9d89ff60d78f5
10:05 < mcphail> popey: my Icon path is different in the camera desktop file
10:05 < mcphail>
Icon=/opt/click.ubuntu.com/.click/users/phablet/com.ubuntu.camera/share/icons/camera-app.svg
10:05 < popey> huh, interesting
10:06 < mcphail> md5sum:

[Bug 1439680] [NEW] DatePicker scrolls too quickly, making precision difficult

2015-04-02 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

Using the DatePicker is more difficult than it needs to be.

OS: 14.09-RTM Ubuntu-Touch on bq aquaris

Example: When adding a new event in the Calendar app, I am presented
with 2 DatePicker widgets (one for date and one for time).

Expected behaviour: I expect to be able to scroll to my desired date and
time quickly and efficiently. I expect it to be particularly easy to
select values at the 0,15,30,45 minute times.

Current behaviour: A small movement on the DatePicker dial causes the
dial to spin quickly. It is far too easy to overshoot the desired value
(often by a long way), Making a precise selection is fiddly and takes
longer than desirable. "Common" time increments such as 0,15,30 and 45
are no easier to select than 1,16,31 or 46, and the latter are often
picked accidently.

I don't know if this sensitivity to gesture is due to the high dpi
screen, or whether it is resolution independent.

[Bug 1364872] Re: The gdbserver is not available on the device image

I'm not sure I agree this should only be in developer versions. I need a
phone which works (hence stable channel), but also like to develop and
debug apps. The 2 use cases are not mutually exclusive.

[Bug 1501668] [NEW] ListItem leadingActions have odd behaviour

2015-10-01 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

I _think_ this is a bug in the ListItem leadingActions implementation,
but please move this if it is another component.

Krillin running default channel (Ubuntu 15.04 r25 as per most recent OTA
update).

In the browser app "bookmarks" page and the clock app "alarms" page, the
listed items can be dragged to the right to reveal a "trash" icon.
Clicking on that icon will often just remove the icon, rather than the
list item. The listed item will only be deleted if the initial right-
drag was all the way to the middle of the screen.

Example:
- Open the Clock app and create a new alarm
- drag the alarm far enough to the right for the "trash" item to be visible.
Release and allow to settle. The item should be in the "ready to be deleted"
state
- Click the trash icon. *The icon will disappear but the item will not*.

- drag the alarm much further to the right (at least to the middle of the
screen), release and allow to settle. Once again, it will be in the "ready to
be deleted" state and will be visually identical to the above
- Click the trash icon. *The icon and the item will be deleted, which is
correct behaviour*.

As this affects more than one app, I think the bug is likely to be in the
component rather than the app.

[Bug 1515068] [NEW] bcache-tools should be added by installer if system is installed onto bcache device

2015-11-10 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

At present, if a system is installed onto a bcache'd device, it will
fail at first boot as the device will not be recognised. It is necessary
to chroot into the system and install bcache-tools manually. This should
be handled by the installer, as it would be for other exotic setups such
as RAID, LVM and encrypted volumes.

[Bug 1515068] Re: bcache-tools should be added by installer if system is installed onto bcache device

2015-11-11 Thread Neil McPhail
Thanks racb. I'd asked in #ubuntu on IRC, and no-one could tell me
against which package to file the bug.

The problem is with the standard graphical installer from the Ubuntu
live disk image. If it is installing onto a bcache'd drive, it should
install bcache-tools. I think the installer already handles LVM,
encrypted and RAID setups gracefully, and it would be nice if it did the
same for bcache.

Thanks for reassigning this appropriately.

[Bug 1398614] Re: mediascanner-service-2.0 using large amounts of CPU

2015-10-14 Thread Neil McPhail
Since pulling in mediascanner2.0 on wily with the ubuntu-sdk package, I
have mediascanner-service consuming a minimum of 10% of CPU at all
times, with frequent spikes to nearly 200%. My CPU is cooking nicely.

To put things in perspective, firefox with 15 open tabs is currently

Something is badly broken here.

[Bug 1465825] [NEW] Outdated frameworks and templates should be moved or removed

2015-06-16 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

Now that OTA-4 has brought us the 15.04 framework, it is time to clean
up the confusing mess of choices available by default when creating a
new project. Obsolete templates and frameworks should be removed, or
retired to an "Ubuntu-legacy" tab in the project-creation wizard.

The default Ubuntu tab should only show qmake templates and the
frameworks selector should only show 15.04 kits. This will save a lot of
confusion and frustration. Users targeting desktop 14.04 (I'm sure there
are not many) can use "Ubuntu-legacy".

[Bug 1459259] Re: Apps using OpenAL on the Ubuntu Phone appear to have direct hardware access despite apparmor constraints

2015-06-16 Thread Neil McPhail
Thanks for the log - if pulse is being used, there must be some reason
the volume control doesn't work.

I have realised the reason the sound continues playing in the background
is due to an unrelated bug: apps continue running in background (or
screen-off) when they do not spawn a gui. Thus, this bug is probably
assigned to the wrong package. Can anyone suggest or reassign to a more
appropriate package?

[Bug 1549783] [NEW] Indicator shows "Tomorrow" for an alarm happening today when checked after midnight

2016-02-25 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

BQ E4.5 (krillin) running OTA9.1

I have 2 recurring alarms set for 0730 and 0800. If I pull down the
clock indicator bar after midnight, the 0730 alarm is listed as
"Tomorrow". The Clock app lists the alarm correctly (although, if I
rememebr correctly, there was previously a bug where the clock app would
get this wrong too). The alarm functions correctly, but the indicator is
unsettling.

** Affects: indicator-datetime (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "Screenshot of indicator showing wrong day for alarm"

[Bug 1435040] Re: Ubuntu Phone (BQ E4.5) does not connect to car-bluetooth

2015-11-30 Thread Neil McPhail
I cannot connect to the unit in my Hyundai i40, and switching to the
latest rc-proposed with bluez5 hasn't changed anything.

Symptoms:
(1) When car unit is asked to search for devices, the phone is not seen at all.
My other bluetooth devices get picked up by this search. I have checked, and
the Ubuntu phone should be advertising
(2) Putting my car into listening mode, my phone can see it as "i40". If I try
to connect, I get the PIN input screen on my phone but nothing happens after I
input my PIN. The phone says the i40 is "disconnected" and the car doesn't
register anything at all.

I have attached debugging info as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingBluetooth.
