[Bug 348071] Re: No way to change default "Save As ... " format in AbiWord
Hubert, Nothing personal, but as a rule, whenever I use something other than Word, I expect the native format to be RTF. And so, I thank you very much for the line to the wiki for the ability to change the default save to something other than what probably is a very nice open source Abi Word "ONLY" format. I changed the info to RTF from the Wiki instead of DOC, but sitll. much appreciated. If you wouldn't mind explaining why you "strongly discourage" people to make this change I would appreciate it. This occurs with a Intel D915GRV and a iHOS104, so I think the issue is with this drive. This board allows me to set the PIO and DMA mode for this drive. [Bug 1254867] [NEW] Waking from Sleep Makes Some Games Perform Sluggishly
Public bug reported: Upon waking my computer from sleeping, certain games will perform less responsively than before putting the computer to sleep. To be more descriptive, the games' visuals will appear to lag slightly (milliseconds) behind my input from the keyboard and mouse. This occurs most pronouncedly with the game Awesomenauts, while slightly improving in certain parts of the level (perhaps less CPU-intensive areas). The problem occurs, albeit less pronouncedly, with other games such as Counter-Strike: Source and Left 4 Dead 2 (if not all of Valve's Source games), Beat Hazard, and perhaps other games in my Steam library I have yet to try. Restarting the computer rectifies the problem, and renders the games snappy and responsive once again. It is unclear whether the games themselves becomes less responsive (CPU- wise), or whether it is the result of another link in the chain (input, GPU, RAM, HDD). [Bug 1256269] [NEW] No Internet Connection on Startup
Public bug reported: Sometimes, once my computer has started up and my desktop environment has loaded, I will have unsuccessful internet connection. My router connection will still show as receiving a signal. However, I will enter a URL into my browser (Firefox), and it will be 'Connecting' for minutes, before eventually failing to load the web page. I use a USB wireless-G adapter dongle (Linksys WUSB54GC), along with a wired extender. Disconnecting and unplugging the adapter for ten seconds then replugging it and reconnecting always rectifies the problem. I'm able to successfully connect to the world wide web once again, and any web page will load up. This will additionally happen with Steam and the Ubuntu Software Centre, so I know it is not just a Firefox problem. Other times the internet works fine on startup. [Bug 1586650] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 touchy WiFi Internet
Hi Christopher, I'm getting stable Internet connection with kernel version 4.7.0-040700rc3-generic on Ubuntu 14.04.4. I've been testing it since early Monday, and it hasn't dropped connection once. I'm able to do normal things like stream music on Spotify and watch YouTube videos. I'm getting 6 to 9 Mbps download speed and 1.9 Mbps upload speed, which is good for my ISP. This was the first and only upstream kernel version I have tested. I've added the requested tags to the initial post, and marked it as Confirmed. Do you need me to test anything else related to this, or do any stress-testing of any sort? So what does this mean? Will this kernel version be arriving standard with a future release of Ubuntu 16.04? In the meantime, should I just continue using this kernel with Ubuntu 14.04, or is it best if I go back to version 3.13? Thanks for all of your patience and assistance on this. ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-4.7-rc3 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1586650 Title: Ubuntu 16.04 touchy WiFi Internet To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1586650/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1586650] [NEW] Ubuntu 16.04 touchy WiFi Internet
Public bug reported: I just recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 on my desktop last weekend, and since that time my household had to reconfigure our modem and router setup (from bridge mode to DHCP mode). As a result, I lost all ability on my computer to connect to WiFi or the Internet. This isn't the first time this has happened on an Ubuntu version. However, all other devices in my household (there are over eight other devices between my family members), including my iPad and my PlayStation, had Internet connection. Growing desperate, I troubleshooted for days, trying out multiple solutions posted on AskUbuntu.com. I even opened up two AskUbuntu.com questions, and some people helped me troubleshoot the issue for a while. But eventually they gave up and left me alone with my problem. I felt so frustrated and exasperated. I thought I was never going to get Internet on my desktop again. Or that I would have to completely reinstall Ubuntu 16.04, because some old settings had been imprinted on my file system or something. But I can't be reinstalling my OS every time someone in my house alters something on our modem or router. Finally, this morning, I decided I would try one last thing: power- cycling our router and modem. I was very reluctant to do this, because the Internet had at last been working great for everyone in our house (we'd been having chronic Internet problems over the previous months), and I didn't want to compromise that. But I really need to have Internet on my desktop. So I power-cycled our router and modem, and finally, FINALLY my Internet works on my computer. It is a bit slow (only 2 Mbps download speed, and web pages load up slowly), but it actually works. I'm of course very skeptical that it will stop working at any time, but for now, it's functional. The issue I have with Ubuntu is that the networking seems extremely touchy and fragile, and isn't very resilient when something changes on your home network. My iPad doesn't have that problem at all; it will reconnect to any router within seconds, and you'll be back on the Internet in no time. My PlayStation can reestablish a new connection profile pretty much automatically and get you back gaming online within minutes. It's with Ubuntu, or Linux, that I've repeatedly encountered this debilitating issue, where reconnecting to an altered network is such a precarious thing. I'd really, REALLY like to continue using Ubuntu. For at least a few years, I no longer have Windows on my machine, I game heavily on Steam for Linux, and I really need the Internet on my desktop for work and for pleasure. But if I can't get Internet reliably with Linux, I fear I'm going to have to switch to another OS. And that would be a real shame. Please, improve the WiFi networking on Ubuntu so that it is just as snappy and resilient as my iPad, and I will be a very happy Ubuntu user for years to come. Thank you for reading. [Bug 1588119] [NEW] [Feature Request] Disable mouse acceleration
Public bug reported: Hello, I'd like the ability to turn off mouse acceleration altogether in Ubuntu. I'm a gamer, and I use a gaming mouse with a custom DPI setting. I'd really like it to be consistent and accurate when I play, as well as on the desktop. [Bug 1586875] Re: Support for Qualcomm Atheros AR928X WiFi chipset
Hi, Here is the AR928X network adapter I bought in April of 2015 from ThinkPenguin.com: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-pcie-card-gnu- linux-v4-tpe-n300pcie4 It says it works with Ubuntu 16.04, as well as Linux kernels 2.6.29 and newer. The best I had with it were very intermittent, spotty connections to the Internet, and often not even to my router. I've since gone back and done a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04.1, and my Internet is working great now. Upon further inquiries on AskUbuntu.com, someone suggested that the problem had something to do with the newer Linux kernel being used in newer Ubuntu versions. Ubuntu 14.04.1 comes with kernel 3.13. Updating my system through Software Updater automatically brought me up to 14.04.4, but thankfully keeps kernel 3.13 if you started with 14.04.1. Although I'd love to use Ubuntu 16.04, I don't want to install anything newer than 14.04.4 unless I know that my WiFi adapter is supported. I hope that will be sooner than later. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1586875 Title: Support for Qualcomm Atheros AR928X WiFi chipset To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1586875/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1586650] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 touchy WiFi Internet
Hi Christopher, I've run and submitted the requested Apport command. I'm currently on Ubuntu 14.04.4, and the Internet has been great -- very stable and reliable. It was brought to my attention through my inquiries on Ubuntu Forums that my WiFi chipset, the AR928X, seems to stop working with newer Linux kernels. Because I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1, I get the benefit of staying on kernel 3.13. That's the main reason I don't want to upgrade anything beyond that kernel. This person also seemed to think it was kernel-related: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/280803/qualcomm-atheros-ar298x-not-working-with-recent-kernels Thanks for your ongoing support. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1586650 Title: Ubuntu 16.04 touchy WiFi Internet To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1586650/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1453363] Re: Many games perform sluggishly after waking PC from suspend (Ubuntu 12.04)
Hi, The issue is now resolved, at least for me. I recently upgraded my graphics card to an Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti, and with it am using the Nvidia proprietary driver, version 340.96. I've tested nearly all of those same games after a wake from suspend, and am seeing no drops in frame rates or input latency. (Frame rates are staying usually above 60 FPS, and often up into the 100s or 200s.) Maybe this issue was addressed on Nvidia's end in driver updates since then. I've also transitioned to Ubuntu 14.04, if that makes any difference. Anyway, there's no clear option to mark this as issue as Solved, so I'll mark it as Confirmed. But it can be considered solved and cleared. [Bug 1453363] [NEW] Many games perform sluggishly after waking PC from suspend (Ubuntu 12.04)
Public bug reported: I'm not sure who to report this to. I've already tried reporting it to Nvidia, but haven't heard any response. It could be a general Linux issue. Or maybe it's something particular to my hardware setup. Anyway, I'll voice it here since it strikes me as the next step. All of my Steam games run at great frame rates normally. However, upon waking my PC from a suspend, many of them perform sluggishly until my next reboot. It's like their frame rate gets cut in half. They're still playable, but not very enjoyably so. Some of these games (played through Steam) include Awesomenauts, Left 4 Dead 2, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2, Portal, Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2. However, some games continue to work just fine after a suspend. For example, Killing Floor. It uses the Unreal 3 engine, and perhaps it is optimized better for Linux. Also Nexuiz and Xonotic continue to work well after a wake from suspend. Note that while the aforementioned games run sluggishly, the Ubuntu desktop still performs as snappy and responsive as before. It seems unaffected by the problem. The issue is only noticeable in games. I hope this will be addressed in future Ubuntu versions, as I aim on continuing to game on this OS. If this has already been addressed in newer versions of Ubuntu, please excuse this. Thank you. [Bug 1335451] [NEW] [Feature Request] Option in Update Manager to Keep Popups in Background
Public bug reported: I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.1 with default Unity, and I find the Update Manager popups taking the focus away from what you're currently doing to be very problematic for fullscreen gaming. The popup will outright interrupt me while gaming. However, the worst part is, once I minimize it, my game has often been changed to windowed mode, and I therefore miss about 30 pixels along the bottom of the screen (where chat messages often occur). It's usually at least one minute before the game readjusts itself back to fullscreen, if at all. I know you can disable Update Manager's popups altogether, but I do find them useful. Otherwise I would never remember to check for updates manually. Sorry if this has already been addressed in Ubuntu 14.04. [Bug 1352838] [NEW] [Feature Request] Lower Mouse Sensitivity Beyond System Settings Limit for High DPI Gaming Mice
Public bug reported: Hello, I have a Razer DeathAdder 3500 dpi gaming mouse that is pretty much unusable on the Ubuntu desktop at such a high dpi. I have the sensitivity in System Settings lowered all the way down, but this does little to help. Razer does not officially support Linux, but this problem could be rectified if one could lower the mouse sensitivity to even lower in Ubuntu's System Settings (or alternately, change the dpi). I know most people don't need to lower their mouse sensitivity that much, but for us (increasing) Linux gamers, it would be a really nice feature in the absence of official Razer drivers. [Bug 2062972] Re: ntfs partition does not mount
I've been experiencing a similar issue since performing a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS yesterday. While my external NTFS USB hard drive is recognized upon plugging it in, trying to mount it or access its contents gives me the 'wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock' error. I was able to get the external hard drive to mount via Terminal with the help of an article... https://linovox.com/how-to-fix-failed-to-mount-wrong-fs-type-bad-option-bad-superblock-on-linux/ ...however, its files are only accessible by navigating to my newly created /mnt/Media folder. The drive is not visible in Nautilus, but I can see it in the Disks app (which is also how I unmount it). I get an error when trying to access its contents with the Steam app, specifically when I attempt to use the Restore Game Backup feature. My external hard drive had been working fine with Ubuntu 22.04 a few hours earlier, and running a disk check said it was healthy. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2062972 Title: ntfs partition does not mount To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntfs-3g/+bug/2062972/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 2063985] [NEW] Does not detect hotplugged storage device
Public bug reported: I've been experiencing an issue since performing a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on launch day. While my external NTFS USB hard drive is visible in the Ubuntu dock upon plugging it in, trying to mount it or access its contents gives me an 'Unable to access "2.0 TB Volume" ... Error mounting /dev/sda1"' pop-up. I was able to get the external hard drive to mount via Terminal with the help of an article (https://linovox.com/how-to-fix-failed-to-mount- wrong-fs-type-bad-option-bad-superblock-on-linux/). However, its files are only accessible by navigating to my newly created '/mnt/Media' folder. The drive is not visible in Nautilus as it usually would be, but I can see it in the Disks app (which is also how I unmount it). Also I'm not sure whether this is related, but I get an error when I attempt to use Steam's Restore Game Backup feature. Upon trying to browse for the desired backup folder (which is on the external drive), I get the pop-up 'The folder contents could not be displayed ... Operation not supported'. From here I can still navigate to and select a folder on the internal hard drive, but not on the external one. My external hard drive had been working fine with Ubuntu 22.04 a few hours earlier in the day, and it currently functions normally on my Chromebook as well. Running 'Check Filesystem' in Disks says it is healthy. I also tried out a couple of my other USB sticks—which happen to use the FAT32 and Ext4 file systems—and they mounted normally. [Bug 240738] Re: syndaemon sometimes fails to disable the touchpad
Tim, try this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBootupHowto (I don't want to state something incorrect :) ). I'm still a little confused as to why using syndaemon is necessary at all, though, when synclient doesn't seem to be affected by whether it's running or not and has many more useful options for handling this rather than a timeout. You guys are trying to avoid palm touches registering when you're typing on a relatively small keyboard/on a netbook-sized device, yes? I can post my xorg.conf for my Aspire One D260 with good, palm-touch-less settings if anyone would like. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/240738 Title: syndaemon sometimes fails to disable the touchpad To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/240738/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 240738] Re: syndaemon sometimes fails to disable the touchpad
Could you please expand on how palm detection is unreliable? I agree that setting a two second delay sucks as a general cure for wandering hands and fingers, but as far as I know the PalmMinZ/PalmMinWidth (I think those are correct) and general touch sensitivity settings still work--or are they the underlying issue now? The touchpad's detection above the surface is normal behavior, but it is a settings failure that causes it to not filter out these very light changes in capacitance as clicks. Turning syndaemon or just palm checking on or off without specifying these values for the particular device, as a few of you have mentioned, probably isn't going to help. I don't know how easy or difficult it would be to actually code, but I think a few sliders attached to a small graphical control system to change these sensitivity values would be the most acceptable solution, as touchpads seem to vary entirely too much between software and hardware implementations for a single setting to work for everyone (per ALPS and Synaptics' page, they actually intend for OEM's to customize their devices, although how much of this lies in the hard- and software realms I can't say).
I'm terribly sorry for the dumb double-post, but I forgot to specify that these settings are located in xorg.conf's input section or in a more flexible xorg.conf.d rule file. This could also probably be accomplished with an init rule, although that seems a bit heavy-handed, especially if the target users affected by this problem are in general not going to be wholly comfortable modifying init rules directly (myself included, for the most oart), or if the system is configured with a kludge of several daemons/programs that can control or even compete over these values (that I perceive most DE's as falling under this header is reason I don't like to change rules directly--I'm not sure how valid it is :).

[Bug 301795] Re: usb flash drive error when copying files
Confirming the bug on Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop. I'm experiencing the same issue with my Transcend 320GB StoreJet 25M. It is connected with one USB2.0 cable and has no additional power supply. I've attached the requested files, that were prepared after a clean boot, and also a part of the messages log with the first occurrence of the error as it is a bit different. Both times I was copying 484 files with a total size of 19Gb to the drive. Min file size was 992Kb and max file size was 2Gb. During the original copying I got the error thee times, and during the test only once. The error occurred when it was copying 34280 byte file. The file was created on the USD drive, but was empty. And the drive made that click sound, like when the cable is unplagued. None of the filenames had any non-latin characters. All files contain a number in the name, so it was possible to track them. So file 877 was copied properly; file 878 was created, but was empty; file 879 was NOT created at all; all other files beginning with 880 were correct. The error occurred at about 10% of copying. First I didn't do any read from the drive, then I opened a video file on the USB drive while still copying. The video played as usual with no errors. Also after the third error during the original copying the system became very slow. That didn't happen the second time. Sorry if this info is useless, but I still don't have much experience reporting bugs. ** Attachment added: "dmesg.log" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27058908/dmesg.log -- usb flash drive error when copying files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301795 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 368846] [NEW] can't play .xm files in .m3u playlist
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem On Hardy, playing a .m3u playlist full of .xm files results in Totem prompting to "Search for a suitable codec", which it can't find ("no matching application available"; "playback of this movie requires a Module Music Format (MOD) decoder plugin which is not installed"). But if I download the individual .xm files and open them, Totem plays them just great. Playing a .m3u with an mp3 in it works great, too. [Bug 368846] Re: can't play .xm files in .m3u playlist
1. Download a .m3u playlist that points to streaming media files in the .xm (FastTracker 2 [1]) format. 2. Open it in Totem. It will try to play the first file, and fail. Double-clicking on any individual file will also fail. I'll attach the particular playlist I experienced this on. (.xm files are admittedly rare). [Bug 369558] [NEW] on install, firefox opens broken mozilla.org page
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 The first time Firefox is installed and run on 64-bit Kubuntu 9.04, it opens two tabs: A 'first run' page: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.0.10/firstrun/ The default homepage: http://www.mozilla.org/ The first one is a 404 error. (I think on Windows, recent Firefox versions point to a mozilla.com "first run" page instead.) This is without ubufox installed of course (I just installed the 'firefox' package in KPackageKit real quick). The default behavior still shouldn't send you to a broken page though. [Bug 349314] Re: Slow performance and tiling issues on i915
Yes, I did a fresh install of 9.04, installed everything in the update manager, then made the xorg.conf changes, installed fixmtrr.sh, the X updates, and the 2.6.29.3 kernel. Performance was worse than a clean install with just the lp349314 kernel posted in this thread and no other changes. (5fps vs 14fps in ppracer, and choppy/unplayable World of Goo demo vs smooth and playable.) The "Bleeding-edge" X updates and 2.6.30-rc5 kernel weren't any better either. -- Slow performance and tiling issues on i915 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/349314 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
