[Bug 68230] Re: [edgy] right click for popup menus on status bar triggers menu items
Something similar happens to me when right clicking links on pages. Sometimes add bookmark comes up, sometimes the link opens in a new tab, sometimes a new window comes up, sometimes the page switches direction. Most times the menu appears though but it still is very irritating. :) The problem seems to be that the menu appears on mouse down - not on mouse up. When running MS Windows the menu appears first when the mouse button is released. This way the button release from the click can not trigger any menu actions. -- [edgy] right click for popup menus on status bar triggers menu items https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/68230 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 187313] Re: [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate popup-menu-item
The problem seems to be that the popup menu is displayed on button-down, not button-up like on Windows. If the mouse is being moved just a little bit at the same time it might be over an item when the button is released. This could either be solved by changing the popup to appear on button release OR introducing a short delay before button releases can activate menu items. Using a delay has the advantage of still allowing single click use of the menu. (press to show, release to select) This might be a problem in other applications too - for example the Nautilus file manager shows context menus on mouse down. Instead of changing every Gnome application to show menus on mouse-up instead maybe a delay should be incorporated into the toolkit - mouse up in the first XXmS of a menu being shown is not counted as selection. Or has something already been done to fix this? -- [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate popup-menu-item https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187313 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 261721] Re: X never sees brightness key release events
I think I've found the solution for this problem (I've successfully fixed it on my laptop anyway). Because of bug 207473 (or another one of the similar ones), I added "blacklist video" to a file in my /etc/modprobe.d/. I accidentally(?) removed it the other day and suddenly both showkey and X was getting Fn+* key release events (too many though, see bug 207473, but the same amount as the press events anyway). When I add the blacklisting back, the problem reappears. I tried switching back and forth a few times, only changing the blacklisting between reboots, so this bug was (for me) _definitely_ caused by "blacklist video". (I think kreggz problem is a totally different one, because my laptop doesn't care at all about the mouse regarding this problem. [Bug 187313] Re: [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate popup-menu-item
I've started holding down the button and choose menu items by releasing it to work around this. Actually, it's quite nice to do it that way. Still, I think it would be good if a delay was introduced before releasing the mouse button can choose menu items. Does firefox use Gtk menus or does it use it's own? The problem exists in a lot of other Gnome programs which also display the menu on mousedown. IMO it should be fixed in the menus themselves. As menus will popup in different directions depending on where on the screen you click you need time to look at the menu before selecting something. I can confirm that running without --loose-bindings fixes the problem. (A web site I'm working on with lots of mouse-over/hover actions seems to have 100% reproducibility of this problem.) I disabled --loose-bindings by commenting out lines 340-344 in /usr/bin/compiz (which really is a shell script). This is not recommended unless you know what you are doing... Unlike ®om, I don't notice any significant slowdown, though. [Bug 269083] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()
Yesterday, I found out using live CD's that the problem only seems to exists when using amd64 architecture. Some thorough investigation by me and a friend (with better C knowledge) has led us to the macro _G_TYPE_CIT, defined at row 1479 in gobject/gtype.h of the glib headers. The segfault seems to be caused by the pointer to __inst->g_class (__inst is defined using a cast of the GpmEngine instance to a GTypeInstance inside the macro). valgrind gives the error "invalid read of size 8" and whines about that pointer (found by entering some fprintf's in the macro). Also, that pointer (as used in the macro) is suddenly 64 bits instead of 32 bits like the rest of the pointers in that macro. My friend is still digging deep in glib's headers to get enlightenment on the issue. The weird thing is that Hardy's version of gnome-power-manager, with seemingly identical code for the problematic(?) files, still works just fine... The Makefile's don't seem to have any strange differences either. -- gnome-power-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/269083 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 269083] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()
After some more hours of debugging we have pinpointed the problem to a (most probable) memory corruption, memory seemingly owned by glib... (Queue enthusiastic wahoo's.) As to why or where this is happening, we haven't got a clue (yet?). More detailed explanation: The GpmEngine pointer (mostly named "engine" in gpm-engine.c) is, accordingly to GDB, correctly sent to g_signal_connect (from gpm_engine_init in gpm-engine.c). However, when gpm_cell_array_charge_low_cb is called from glib's event handler, the engine pointer is a different one. When running Hardy's version of g-p-m in Intrepid, this doesn't happen. We managed to get Intrepid's version working using a very very very very /.../ very very very fugly hack... That is, we saved the pointer generated in gpm_engine_new (like everything else, in gpm-engine.c) to a global (static) variable, and then restored it inside gpm_cell_array_charge_low_cb. Ta-da, no segfault when charge-low should be emitted! (eh... wahoo?) Like I said, this is fugly, but at least we've demonstrated the problem. Unless this is fixed before Intrepid's release, I suggest a revert to Hardy's version is made. [Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression
As far as I could tell from the code, Anoop P B has the correct solution (which I can see from the output of my g-p-m). If the battery profile of the (primary) battery isn't good enough (accuracy less than 40%), no action will be taken, and no warnings will be shown. This is true even if use_time_for_policy is disabled, which is just plain stupid. It's also quite unacceptable for most cases, since it can cause both data loss and file system corruption if the user doesn't shut down manually in time. I'm going to make an attempt to fix this later tonight (I'm at work right now) by adding two things: 1. A check that takes actions even with a "bad" profile when use_time_for_policy is disabled. 2. A fallback that will use the percentage instead of time if the profile isn't good enough yet. If I'm successful, of course I will submit my patch. I think this bug is actually quite critical since it only affects new users. (New users of gnome, that is. As I said in my last comment, I would submit my patch when I was done with it, and here it is. It also ignores the accuracy of the battery profile when the GCONF key 'use_time_for_policy' is disabled. These messages would always show 0% battery remaining, since the cell unit object was reset while generating one of the strings used in the message. (yup, the second point means I found another bug as well) I'm attaching the .diff.gz file generated by dpkg-build package, since that is the simplest way for me to attach all my changes in one file. [Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression
5of0, My bet is that "use time" doesn't help, because gnome-power-manager is coded to work just like this (I've read the code). Like I've said in a previous comment (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power- manager/+bug/135548/comments/88), gnome-power-manager WILL NOT DO ANYTHING until it has a reliable battery profile (which occurs after 5-10 battery full cycles while g-p-m is running). This is also true even when "use_time_for_policy" is unchecked, which is just plain stupid since the battery percent can be gotten through normal ACPI information and doesn't need any profile. As I've also mentioned above (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /gnome-power-manager/+bug/135548/comments/89), I HAVE MADE A WORKING PATCH for this (I've run it myself for a while without any problems at all). [Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression
Jo, Well make it a week or two. Running the computer with the electrical cord in place does not count (although it does add data about how the battery charges). You can check the progress by right clicking g-p-m in the system tray, selecting "power history" and then in that box (near the bottom), select "discharge time accuracy profile". when the average value of that graph is over 40%, stuff will start working. What my patch does it fix the gap before it starts working. First and foremost, caring about the profile even when use_time_for_policy is disabled is just weird, since the profile doesn't add anything to the mix at that point. Then, not telling the user anything about this thing with ignoring actions is just a bad idea, there's no warning anywhere. I actually "fell into the trap" myself a few days ago, after installing ubuntu on my new laptop. Thank god no data was lost, because I was in the middle of doing quite a lot. I still think this is a bug, since a developer put in this accuracy check for a good cause (some broken ACPI's could make the computer hibernate way too early, according to the changelog), but probably didn't think about what would happen until the accuracy profile was good enough. And yes, you can enable use_time_for_policy again. -- [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135548 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 70467] Occationally failure to write CD-R requires reboot
Public bug reported: I burnt one ISO by right click->write to disc and it all want well and the CD is used to install Xubuntu so I know it is ok. But the audio is not detected here. Is it a buggy EISA detection causing this? Should I file another bug for the sound? At least for the NIC there is driver that should work according to the docs. For the audio I guess the cs4237 is supported by the available Crystal drivers but I am not sure. I attach the intalled kernel (2.6.15-23) log for reference against the already attached log from the live CD kernel (2.6.15-26) The interesting lines are: < [0.00] Linux version 2.6.15-23-powerpc ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5)) #1 Tue May 23 13:46:54 UTC 2006 > [0.00] Linux version 2.6.15-26-powerpc ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc > version 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5)) #1 Thu Aug 3 02:53:39 UTC 2006 and < [ 32.329540] aty128fb: Invalid ROM signature 8181 should be 0xaa55 < [ 32.329568] aty128fb: BIOS not located, guessing timings. < [ 32.329592] aty128fb: Rage128 RL AGP [chip rev 0x2] 8M 64-bit SDR SGRAM (2:1) < [ 32.364369] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48 < [ 32.364402] fb0: ATY Rage128 frame buffer device on Rage128 RL AGP > [ 65.884727] Using unsupported 1024x768 ATY,Rage128k at 9400, depth=8, > pitch=1024 > [ 65.919532] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48 > [ 65.919556] fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /[EMAIL > PROTECTED]/ATY,[EMAIL PROTECTED] The live CD kernel uses some other device driver that isn't working with the UseFBDev option "true" as it seems. ** Attachment added: "dmsg log from kernel 2.6.15-23" http://librarian.launchpad.net/4845578/dmesg-2.6.23-ppc.txt -- [R128] Dapper ppc install cd SIGSEGV initializing X on iMac https://launchpad.net/bugs/63072 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 60474] Re: 1280x800 resolution won't work
My understanding is that the 1280x800 mode in the i810 driver, that I just got to work on an Acer Travelmate 3002WTMi BTW, is enabled by having this mode in the BIOS and not otherwise. The rationale behind this, I have been told, is that the i810 driver for the 915GM has no chance to know about DAC:s and clock settings external to the device itself, thus it relies on the BIOS resolutions. Apparantly this is a bit going safe-safe but since it figures out the settings when it finds the resolution in the patched (by 915resolution) BIOS I guess it must be possible to add in the driver too. Maybe something expensive can break if the DAC:s and clocks are set to provide a crazy resolution, what do I know? So I think this is by design rather than because of a bug. File it as a feature request. -- 1280x800 resolution won't work https://launchpad.net/bugs/60474 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
