I had a similar experience installing the Dapper Live CD on a PPC iMac. See:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/64934 In fact I had to turn on the swap manually before installation and even so the installer turned off the swap during execution of partitioning bringing the system to freeze due to too little memory.
