[Bug 382995] Re: Whenever I try to mount USB storage drive, a message comes up.

2009-06-02 Thread Jeff Enns
Thank you for submitting this bug report. Please, could you do the
following and attach all the files it produces:

-disconnect the device
-in a terminal, start udevadm in monitor mode and capture output by running:
  sudo udevadm monitor -e | tee udev.log

-connect the device
- open a second Terminal and capture lshal, dmesg and ls the attached volumes
by running:
  lshal > lshal.txt
  dmesg > dmesg.txt
  ls -l /dev/sd* > devices.txt

-Press Control-C in the first terminal with the "udevadm".
-attach lshal.txt, devices.txt, dmesg.txt and udev.log to the bug report
-paste the output of "ck-list-sessions" into the bug report
-paste the output of "id haldaemon" into the bug report

Thank you very much.

[Bug 382995] Re: Whenever I try to mount USB storage drive, a message comes up.

2009-06-02 Thread Jeff Enns
Actually, lets do one more procedure. I just want to make sure the developers
have all they need:
-disconnect the device
- stop hal by running:
  sudo killall hald

-start hald while capturing its output
  sudo hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes 2>&1 | tee hal.log
-wait until the flood of messages settled
-connect the device
-wait again until no more messages appear
-press Control-C to stop the foreground hal
- restore the background hal:
  sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart
-attach hal.log to the bug report
-restart your desktop session

Thank you again.

Thank you for sending in your bug report. I think what might have
happened is that you accidentally told it to never ask if you want to
save your password for that site. If you got to Edit->Preferences,
Security Tab and click the "Exceptions..." button a dialog will show all

gmail.com are there and remove from the list. Let me know if that fixes

Yes, I believe these files are the correct ones (as long as they came out of
your home directory). Please, could you post /etc/profile and all files in
/etc/profile.d? How were you trying to change your shell and to what shell
were you trying to change to? Could you, please, post the output to this :
  echo $SHELL

[Bug 382831] Re: bash: ./bin/qsub_pbs.bashrc: No such file or directory

2009-06-04 Thread Jeff Enns
Thank you for sending those. So, you were wanting to change from bash to dash?
Do you remember exactly which commands you used to do this (e.g. did you edit
/etc/passwd directly, did you run chsh, etc)? Also could you post the output
to this command to make sure it remembered your settings, please:
echo $SHELL

One last thing. Could you run these to commands and upload the files to here,
please?:
find ~ -type f -exec grep -H /bin/qsub_pbs.bashrc {} \; > ~/HomeQsubSearch.txt
sudo find /etc -type f -exec grep -H /bin/qsub_pbs.bashrc {} \; >
~/EtcQsubSearch.txt
sudo find / -type f -name qsub_pbs.bashrc > ~/QsubFileSearch.txt

The files HomeQsubSearch.txt, EtcQsubSearch.txt and QsubFileSearch.txt
should be in your home directory when you are done. These commands may
take a while to run since it is searching your drive. The first command
is searching for any references to the missing file in your home
directory, the second your etc directory and the last is looking for the
file itself.

Thank you very much.

2009-06-04 Thread Jeff Enns
OK, here is what I would like you to do:
- Start gnome-terminal
- Run: cp .bashrc .bashrc.old
- Run: nano .bashrc
- Locate the line that says: source $NIMROOT/bin/qsub_pbs.bashrc
- Delete that line
- Press Ctrl-O then Ctrl-X
- Exit gnome-terminal and try again (if that doesn't work, try logging off then
back on).
- Let me know if it fixes it or not.

You are back to bash. If you just ran /bin/sh than that creates a shell
temporarily. If you want to permanently change the shell us "chsh".

[Bug 383632] Re: AHCI Hard Drive constantly erroring

2009-06-04 Thread Jeff Enns
Thank you for the additional information. I agree, one would expect
clean results from a brand new piece of hardware. However, the only
time I've seen these errors has been when a hard drive or the controller
failed. That's not to say that is always the case, but that has been my
experience in the past. I just want to be really sure that everything
is fine with the hardware.

One last question I have is how did you check on SMART? Did you use a
BIOS/firmware utility or smartmontools? What kind of tests did you run?

Thanks again.

[Bug 383942] Re: updates won't install error msg

2009-06-05 Thread Jeff Enns
Sir,

I'm sorry you are having troubles. However, sense we are not there to
see what you are doing and what the results were, we can only guess what
happened. We need more information from you in order to help you.
Without more information no one can help you without being at your
computer. Sense we are volunteers such attitude towards us doesn't help
the situation (e.g. we don't have to help you, but your lucky enough to
be talk to nice little me). I'm here, waiting for more information from
you so I can help you. Without it I cannot do anything. At minimum I
need to know how you preformed your update, sense there are several ways
to do so, and I need you to attach /var/log/apt/term.log (post if you
need help doing this). I may need you to do more once I see what is
going on and that's because I cannot control your computer from here.

Thank you for submitting this report and please be patient with me as we
work on this problem.

[Bug 384137] Re: Firefox Crash

2009-06-05 Thread Jeff Enns
Thank you for sending in your bug report. Could you try running firefox
from the command line by running Applications->Accessories->Terminal and
running this command: "firefox". Please, post any errors you get from
running firefox this way. Also, I'll need you to try creating a new
firefox profile and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new
profile by following these directions:

Start Firefox by entering the following command is a terminal: firefox
-ProfileManager. You should now see the Profile Manager window.

Important note: From the Profile Manager you are also able to remove and
rename profiles. Be very careful when deleting profiles, if you created
the profile in a directory that already existed, the entire directory
will be removed!

Click on the 'Create Profile...' button to start the 'Create Profile
Wizard'. Click 'Next' and enter a descriptive name for the new profile.
Click Finish to have Firefox create the new profile. You should now be
taken back to the Profile Manager and the newly created profile should
be listed. Select it and click 'Start Firefox'. Try to reproduce the bug
with this new profile.

Note: you can go back to your own profile by starting Firefox using the
command firefox -ProfileManager again, selecting your own profile, and
clicking on 'Start Firefox'.

Thank you!

[Bug 384147] Re: Jaunty 'randomly' freezes with flashing/blinking Caps Lock on Acer Aspire 6920G

2009-06-05 Thread Jeff Enns
Yes, I agree that your drive is possibly failing. If something
important like upstart (init) or even the kernel itself resides on one
or more of those bad blocks anything can happen. Kernel panics due to
hard drive failure is rare, but I've seen it a couple times. I'm not
sure if there is a way to grab the logs from memtest. You can just post
if you saw errors or not.

I'm going to go ahead and close out this bug for now. If you get this
problem again on good hardware don't hesitate to open another bug
report. Thank you for the update!

2009-06-05 Thread Jeff Enns
OK, that's a different story (thanks for the update). Could you confirm
it is doing the exact same thing (flashing keyboard lights, locked up,
etc)? If it is, are they the same lights flashing? Do you see the
kernel panic or does it hang in X in such a way you cannot see the
panic? Can you, please, post your /var/log/kern.log to see if the
kernel panic got written to the log? Also, can you post
/var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog? Thank you for the additional
information.

[Bug 381061] Re: nmap v4.76 crashing when used with send-ip option

2009-05-27 Thread Jeff Enns
Sorry, we need more information about this bug as I wasn't able to
reproduce the problem. What version of Ubuntu are you running? Are you
running this sudo or as a real user? Can you run the command you list
outside of the process and does it work? Thank you for more
information!

2009-05-27 Thread Jeff Enns
Sorry, my fault. You need to install the version with debug symbols
left in. Please, see this site on how to install it:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash. Also, make sure to
execute /usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/nmap rather than /usr/bin/nmap. The
latter has the debug symbols and the former is the original stripped
version. Thank you!

[Bug 381061] Re: nmap v4.76 crashing when used with send-ip option

2009-05-28 Thread Jeff Enns
Make sure you have the following in your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com jaunty main restricted universe multiverse

Also, make sure the gpg key was successfully imported. Then you can:

sudo apt-get update

If you get errors at this point, please, double check the pgp key
import. Once you update your apt cache you should be able to install
it:

sudo apt-get install nmap-dbgsym=4.76-0ubuntu4

Thank you for your effort on this matter and thank you for submitting
your bug report. Let me know if I can assist anymore. Thanks.

OK, lets try this. If you don't have strace installed, you can do the
following:

sudo apt-get install strace

Then run:

sudo strace -Ff -tt nmap --send-ip -PE -sP -n 128.0.0.0/24 2>&1 | tee

If that works, post the log, please. Sorry this has become such a

[Bug 382515] Re: Open Office 3.0 function "MIN" returns incorrect values

Could you post the .csv, please. The character that represents the '-'
is not actually a '-'. It is a different ASCII character throwing off

culprit, not OpenOffice.

[Bug 384205] Re: I can not open Youtube page.

2009-06-08 Thread Jeff Enns
Thank you for the update. Could you do the following to create a new
firefox profile and see if that is causing the problems, please?:

:Start Firefox by entering the following command is a terminal: firefox
-ProfileManager. You should now see the Profile Manager window.
Important note: From the Profile Manager you are also able to remove and rename
profiles. Be very careful when deleting profiles, if you created the profile in
a directory that already existed, the entire directory will be removed!
-
Click on the 'Create Profile...' button to start the 'Create Profile Wizard'.
Click 'Next' and enter a descriptive name for the new profile. Click Finish to
have Firefox create the new profile. You should now be taken back to the
Profile Manager and the newly created profile should be listed. Select it and
click 'Start Firefox'. Try to reproduce the bug with this new profile.

Note: you can go back to your own profile by starting Firefox using the
command firefox -ProfileManager again, selecting your own profile, and
clicking on 'Start Firefox'.

Let me know how that goes. Thank you!

Thank you for the update. You can switch back to the old profile (like
the last paragraph in the instructions tell you how to) and backup your
bookmarks by going to Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import and
Backup -> Backup. Then switch back to the new profile and import the
old bookmarks (Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import and Backup ->
Restore -> Choose File). Then from now on you should be using the new
profile with your existing bookmarks. I hope that helps. Thank you.
