[Bug 198218] Re: [hardy] After suspend sound isnt working anymore

2008-12-08 Thread Henry Gomersall
On a Dell Inspiron 9400 with snd-hda-intel, I get the same problem.

There is an interesting effect where from a fresh boot, the
suspend/resume works fine. Sound works and everything is great. The
problems seem to be after I have run Banshee using Gstreamer.

Note that I can happily run mplayer or flash videos with sound time and
again and then suspend and resume apparently fine.

Running sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload will enable Banshee to play audio again.
At this point, Mplayer no longer works, with the warning:
AO: [pulse] Failed to connect to server: Connection refused
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.

[Bug 279102] Re: Unreliable network connection with B44 driver

2008-12-01 Thread Henry Gomersall
I have installed Intrepid from scratch, removing all the cruft from
previous installations in the process.

My machine now seems to work flawlessly with Compiz running. No dropped
connections.

I should note that I did have changed the graphics acceleration to from
XAA to EXA to solve another problem with hangs in Compiz. This is the
major change. I also added a few extra lines which I don't understand
(below the EXA change) to xorg.conf:

Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "AccelDFS" "off"
Option "AGPMode" "1"
Option "AGPFaseWrise" "1"

It may be that all this has nothing to do with the network droppings,
but there did appear to be a relationship between compiz and the dropped
connections.

It seems I'm also loading the fglrx driver into the kernel. I've no idea

This is inferred from the kernel tainting warning in dmesg.

Additional info: The network issue only occurs when Compiz is turned on.
This is using the open source ati driver.

I attach the output from dmesg. Compiz is turned on around [50] and a
few lines at the bottom show the network driver going down (commented).

I will also attach output from lspci, syslog and kern.log. The relevant
portions of syslog and kern.log are at the bottom of the files.

[Bug 279102] [NEW] Network manager repeatedly drops connections

2008-10-06 Thread Henry Gomersall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Network manager drops wired connections repeatedly. It seems to be
correlated with accessing servers. Pages with lots of images (e.g.
www.dilbert.com) seem to trigger the bug more readily than simple text
only pages.

The connection is immediately picked up again using DHCP.

This is using Intrepid beta.

Further to my last post (2008-12-01), I should note that I accidentally
installed 64-bit Intrepid. Accidentally because I borrowed a disk
without thinking what version I was installing. Its a testament to just
how far things have come that I didn't notice for 3 weeks! Anyhoo, it is

[Bug 209107] Re: VLC doesn't register itself as a DVD player

2008-04-09 Thread Henry Gomersall
Nautilus is a moronic place to put these preferences. This is something
that, from the user's perspective, is a system level decision. This
means the decision about how to handle a type of media should *not* be
set within the file manager. A CD isn't even a disc of files! Not to
mention the appalling discoverability problem that has been created.

[Bug 214621] [NEW] Nautilus should not be the place to set media policies

2008-04-09 Thread Henry Gomersall
Public bug reported:

With the introduction of Hardy, the dialogue for setting the policy for
handling the insertion of different media (CD, DVD, Photo flash cards
etc) has been moved from the "Removable drives and media" capplet to the
Nautilus preferences.

Nautilus preferences should have information *only* regarding the
nautilus window. Setting system level policies here is a really bad
usability move. Users neither need to know nor should they care that
nautilus is the program actually handling the HAL events (if indeed it
is). The file manager is not the natural place to look for this option.
Not least because YOU NEED THE FILE MANAGER OPEN in order to find it.
>From the users perspective, the file manager is not always open, and
hence system level settings should be kept well away from it.

This is a serious usability regression. If it is an upstream issue, then
a bug report should be filed (which I am happy to do). Despite the fact
that Nautilus has this option, it is sufficiently non-discoverable that
an alternative move would be to still include the old "Removable drives
and media" capplet and duplicate the options (a crap solution, but
arguably better than the current situation). The natural place to put
options regarding removable drives and media is the "REMOVABLE DRIVES
AND MEDIA" capplet. If there is a desire to remove this capplet, then do
it all or don't do it at all.

[Bug 221330] Re: [hardy] Cannot change default player for DVDs

2008-05-09 Thread Henry Gomersall
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 191475 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191475

The whole thing is stupid. There are sound underlying architectural
changes to the virtual filesystem, however, the moving of the media from
g-v-m to nautilus was wrong imo. Media should not be put in the same
paradigm as files.

I made my comments known on the relevant nautilus bug list, but the
developers know best and blame my viewpoint on an inability to change
rather than their bad design decision.

[Bug 66379] Re: evince does not enable print

2006-12-11 Thread Henry Gomersall
I had this problem (or a very similar one). It was due to evince being
unable to connect to the cups server (connection refused). This was
apparent when I ran evince under strace.

The problem it seemed was due to an error in my hostname aliasing in the
networking configs. Initially, for some reason, I had my hostname
pointing at 127.0.1.1 and no alias at all for localhost. I *think* the
problem was caused when I changed localhost to 127.0.0.1.

The problem was solved by changing both my hostname and localhost to be
aliases for 127.0.0.1 and restarting.

I wonder if evince attempts to access cups with a different server
string to most programs.

2009-10-09 Thread Henry Gomersall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

Bluetooth appears to be disabled. Mousing over the bluetooth icon shows
"Bluetooth: Disabled"

Clicking the bluetooth icon gives me a reduced menu with only options
shown in the attached screenshot.

The preferences dialogue is entirely greyed out as shown in the
screenshot.

I am aware of bug #441800 and I can confirm that I have gnome-bluetooth
2.28.1-0ubuntu1.

This is running on Karmic Beta, updated and rebooted today (9/10/09).
This problem has only manifested itself on Karmic and bluetooth worked
fine under Jaunty.

The following output from dmesg reports no problems:
[0.380007] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.15

[Bug 451162] Re: [Dell Inc. XPS M1530] suspend/resume failure

2009-10-16 Thread Henry Gomersall
I have a similar problem in terms of symptoms on a Dell Inspiron 9400,
also running Karmic.

In my case, the suspend only fails the _second_ time I attempt it after
a fresh boot. The first time seems to suspend and resume fine (although
obviously something is different). It began to occur after the last
kernel upgrade (although it may be related to one of the other many
packages that also upgraded), so its only been happening the last couple
of days.

Scott, is this the same with you? If not i'll open a new bug report.

[Bug 697815] Re: bzr crashed with ShortReadvError in _seek_and_read()

2011-01-07 Thread Henry Gomersall
Thanks, the script seems to have done as advertised, but I can't seem to create
a new branch. bzr branch foo bar -r N always returns the following error:
bzr: ERROR: Revision {...@bar.com-20101204193555-1aoidb41qyt180v9} not present
in "CHKInventoryRepository('file:///path/to/repository/.bzr/repository/')".

The other problem is that I don't know which the last working revision
is.

2011-01-07 Thread Henry Gomersall
Hmmm, I don't seem to have a .bzr.log file anywhere I can see (not ~/,
not repository/, not /var/log/, not ~/.bazaar/). Should I have enabled a
switch somewhere to turn on the logging?

2011-01-07 Thread Henry Gomersall
Its set to ~/.bzr.log, but that file doesn't exist. Could this be
another manifestation of the pack problem?

Ultimately, its not a catastrophe as the code is all there, but I would
like to get to the bottom of it so it doesn't happen again.

[Bug 697815] Re: bzr crashed with ShortReadvError in _seek_and_read()

2011-01-07 Thread Henry Gomersall
So it seems ~/.bzr.log was there. Not quite sure how I missed it
(apologies for being a fool).

Anyway, I was having trouble with getting a sensible internal state for
the code using the suggested method, so I branched the tree to an old
commit and then replaced the .bzr directory in my working tree with the
.bzr from the new branch. A few commits later and it all seems to be
working fine.

Thanks for all the help. Is the recommendation then that ext4 should not
be used?

[Bug 674138] Re: "Global" appmenu breaks sloppy focus

2011-05-05 Thread Henry Gomersall
I've just started playing with Unity, and it strikes me that using the
alt+key for grabbing the menu (and esc to cancel) seems to fit in with
a nice workflow, particularly when I note that in actuality I rarely use
the menus. The only problem is that I would like a unified key to do the
grabbing. For the most part, alt+f will grab the file menu, but there is
no guarantee that a file menu exists. Is there a key stroke I'm not
aware of?
