[Bug 158546] Re: PCTV Studio/Rave no sound out

2010-01-06 Thread Fitch
I tried the workaround with no effect.
I did try and type it in a command line:
install bttv modprobe tuner ; modprobe --ignore-install bttv $CMDLINE_OPTS
and got:
install: target `tuner' is not a directory
or am I doing something extremely silly?

[Bug 373923] Re: Problem burning audio cd's with brasero

2010-01-31 Thread Fitch
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 395922 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395922

I don't have the normalisre plugin installed but still get:
Blank CD-R Disk: Not enough free space
Please replace the disk with a supported CD or DVD
it is not possible to write with the current set of plugins.

I seem to be getting quite a few "permission Denied" entries.
Is it a case of chowning something and off I go?

[Bug 528101] [NEW] package 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1.1 failed to upgrade

2010-02-25 Thread Fitch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-emailmerge

Ubuntu 9.10
Synaptic Package Manager 0.62.5
There is no problem with Open Office itself.
When the upgrade process started, it came up saying that I had to close open
office to continue.
Open Office was not running, so I did a "ps ax | grep office" and saw 3 or 4
"applications running, so killed them.
The upgrade went about 2 second further, and up came the warning again.
I did another "ps ax | grep office" and saw the daemons had resurrected
themselves. I killed them and two seconds later the problem repeated.

[Bug 462059] Re: libkrb53 package required instead of libkrb5-3 in Karmic

2010-02-26 Thread Fitch
libpq5 seems to be quite important (mark for removal and see what else would
have to be removed) and there are actually a few issues with docvert and
upgrades crashing
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/450569. Wouldn't happen to be related would
they?
Bottom line is libkrb53 (>=1.6.dfsg.2) MUST be made available again.
I'm starting to agree with Oedipe

2009-11-28 Thread Fitch
Report 456485 (Fitch) was encountered after a clean Ubuntu 9.10 install.
My own remedy was to mark for complete removal:
Apache 2, mysql, mysql server, mysql core and zoneminder.
I then installed libdirac-dev and libdirac0c2a.
Then I installed Zoneminder 1.24.1.
No problems were encountered after that.

[Bug 580129] [NEW] fax garbled

2010-05-13 Thread Fitch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: efax

Trying to send a fax results in 1500 lines, 1500 errors.
Received fax is totally unreadable. This is not just e-fax, but also TKUSR.
Don't know how to use Mgetty.
I use a US Robotics External Message Modem thinking this would solve the
problem og Linmodem crashing everytime there's an upgrade. - It did, but now I
can't send or receive anything.
This fault is with the later versions of Karmic and now with Lucid 10.04 LTS.
Borrowing a Windows computer for a day allowed me to download all received
faxes and messages without any problem. I was also able to test the send
capability. Windows application BVRP shipped with the faxmodem is brilliant!
Why can't someone make the same for Linux - I've had no answer from the US
Robotics MD yet - well, maybe he's busy being taken over by Hewlett Packard.

[Bug 472770] Re: NO Audio in Tv Time using Ubuntu Karmic

2009-12-21 Thread Fitch
Me again
I did see an old thread relating to Mandrake which suggested adding "options
tda9887 pal=i" in /etc/modprobe.d/bttv.conf.
This led to "unrecognised pal" and "unable to tune" errors in dmesg. But the
speakers were wonderfully silent (I was getting fed up with the hiss), so the
problem's definitely around there.

HELP!

And I wont let it expire

[Bug 502680] [NEW] Keytouch: system crash on boot

2010-01-03 Thread Fitch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: keytouch-editor

I installed keytouch & keytouch editor on my system as I have a Microsoft
Natural Multimedia keyboard 1.0A.
Ubuntu Karmic
Everything went well, except that pressing the web/home button caused the home
directory to show instead of the home internet page. O.K., so I did a reboot
just in case that was the problem.

All I now get is
init: Failed to spawn mountall_shell main process: unable to execute permission
denied
init: job_process.c:529: Unhandled error from job_process_spawn: Permission
denied
init: job_process.c:529: Unhandled error from job_process_spawn: Permission
denied
init: Failed to spawn mountall_shell post-stop process: unable to execute
permission denied

If I do a control alt delete, I get
init: Failed to spawn control-alt-delete main process: unable to execute
permission denied
init: job_process.c:529: Unhandled error from job_process_spawn: Permission
denied

I get the same in recovery mode

I can put the live CD in, but don't know what to do with it as most of the time
I'm not allowed in anywhere. I can get the CD's Firefox web browser up, but I
can't, of course, retrieve the mail from the computer's Thunderbird directory,
so I've lost all my bookings.
What file do I delete to get it to run, How do I tell the CD that I'm the owner
of this computer and really need it back?

Or can I call up the synaptic manager on the computer to uninstall
keytouch, and if so ,how?

[Bug 601208] Re: kaffeine is missing demux plugin dvbpipe.m2t

Had the same problem after installation of Kaffeine using Synaptic.

Just went back to Synaptic and found libxine1-all-plugins had not been

[Bug 751618] [NEW] Secondary axis will not take scale from date and defaults to 30/12/1899

2011-04-05 Thread Fitch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
OOO320m19 (Build:9505)
ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu2~10.04.1

A temperature reading is taken every 4 hours and downloaded to a monthly
temperature report spreadsheet.
Column A is the date and time, column B is the reading.
The secondary x axis shows the date and the primary x axis shows the time.
If the attachment does not upload,
www.braffertonguesthouse.co.uk/Album/Temp.ods shows the problem.
The process is meant to be automatic, but time is wasted correcting the axes as
the x axis always defaults to a minimum of 30/12/1899 and a maximum of (in this
case) 17/06/1900.

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-05-25 Thread Dan Fitch
I have the "unkillable process" problem without fuse or totem being
involved, on a headless server install, not running X.

Was installing sbcl (sudo apt-get install sbcl) inside a screen(1)
session and now the apt process and the launched sbcl (which is trying
to generate some cache or something) are both unkillable with kill -9
and killall -9.

The other interesting symptom is that pstree -p reports all processes
fine, but ps aux actually locks up midway through its report.

When the sbcl install locked up for over an hour, I instinctively
ctrl-c'd it and ran it again without noticing the first one had not
died. Now I have multiple unkillable sbcl processes; I've attached the
relevant section of pstree.

The screen session that launched those processes is also now unkillable,
but other processes (new and old) are behaving normally.

If I reliably duplicate this, I'll post more info.

[Bug 311297] Re: growisofs unable to burn dual layer DVD-R

2015-10-31 Thread Gordon Fitch
I have experienced this problem with Ubuntu 14.04. Until a few months ago the
problem did not occur, but then I started to observe inevitable failures when
the target was a DL DVD-R. I have a machine still running 12.04 which does not
exhibit the problem; it has no trouble writing the DVDs. I conclude the change
made to 14.04 is the current problem.
The error messages I get are similar to those already posted here.

[Bug 1536409] [NEW] gimp move by holding space bar does not terminate

2016-01-20 Thread Gordon Fitch
Public bug reported:

package: gimp 2.8.14

release: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS

circumstance: Running gimp in full screen mode, moving image around by
depressing space bar and using mouse. Cursor changes to fist. Note
that image was larger by a good bit than window / view of image.

expected behavior: On releasing space bar, cursor should resume previous
mode and moving mouse should not move image.

observed behavior: On releasing space bar, gimp remains in same state
(moving image). Moving the cursor outside the window does not release
the move either. Clicking mouse (either side) has no effect in window
or out. Nor does ESC, space, break, or any other keyboard action. In
full screen mode, it is necessary to reboot or restart the desktop to
get out of the situation.

[Bug 1398035] [NEW] grub suddenly unable to get keystrokes from wireless keyboard and mouse

2014-12-01 Thread Gordon Fitch
Public bug reported:

Problem appeared after automatic update of version 12.04, (12.04.5) and
also after trying to update to 14.04. Keyboard, mouse work OK with
previous versions and LiveCD of 12.04.1. In 12.04, loader presented
menu from which selection could not be made with either mouse or
keyboard and did not time out. In 14.04, could not select from menu but
menu timed out.

Substituting old-style keyboard and USB mouse caused problem to
disappear (thus far). Boot is normal, computer is now running normally.

Ubuntu versions: see above.

Wireless keyboard is Logitech Y-RAK73. No legible information on mouse

[Bug 1398035] Re: grub suddenly unable to get keystrokes from wireless keyboard and mouse

The menu I saw offered different versions of the operating system, one
per line. Since both the keyboard and the mouse were apparently not
effective, pressing 'C' would presumably have no effect. The choices
were different after I installed 14.04 and tried that, but the failure
to receive anything from the mouse or keyboard was the same.

I was not able to obtain a command line from the 12.04 LiveCD.
It was made on Oct. 3, 2012, probably right after installing

[Bug 1090413] [NEW] Cursor moved by Wacom tablet does not evoke hidden Unity bar

2012-12-14 Thread Gordon Fitch
Public bug reported:

I am writing on an Eee PC, therefore, small screen. Unity pane/bar is
normally hidden and is supposed to pop out when cursor is moved to left
end of screen. This works with the pad as expected. However, when I
have a Wacom tablet (ET-0405-U) hooked up via USB, and move the cursor
with the tablet stylus, the bar does not appear; I have to use the pad.
I am not sure where the problem is, but I am guessing it's the Wacom
driver.

[Bug 622483] Re: Rhythmbox import from folder appears to choke on large number of files

2010-08-27 Thread Gordon Fitch
IN order to cut the problem data down to manageable size, I tried the
following, which is associated with the problem reported. In this case a
playable MP3 file is imported (as the contents of a folder) and doesn't show
up, yet there is no error message. The folder name is
'/media/m2/A/music/verdi' and the file is 'Verdi - _Nabucco_ - Karajan
[Complete].mp3'. The following files will be attached:
* rhythmbox-debug-0.txt (Start RB with no database, a few files in ~/Music)
* rhythmdb.0.xml  (result in ~/.local/share/rhythmbox)
* rhythmbox-debug-1.txt   (try to add Verdi mp3)
* rhythmdb.1.xml  (result in ~/.local/share/rhythmbox)

I will continue to try to replicate the choking problem
deterministically; thus far things have occurred differently with each
run.

** Attachment added: "attempt to add verdi fle, no error shown, file does not
appear"

[Bug 622483] [NEW] Rhythmbox import from folder appears to choke on large number of files

2010-08-22 Thread Gordon Fitch
Public bug reported:

I attempted to import a folder containing several thousand MP3s.
The process stopped after approximately 1220 had been scanned,
without an error message. Most of the files do not appear in any
of the displays, so I take it they have not been imported. I am
wondering if there is some upper limit; I do not see anything about
it in the documentation. It has been suggested that this is a bug.

** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1955087] [NEW] bluetooth cannot transfer files to phone although connected

2021-12-16 Thread Gordon Fitch
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: 20.4

Not sure of package (bluez)? (Whatever handles Bluetooth)

What I expected: File is transferred.

What happened: transfer fails with mysterious error code (0x53) which
sometimes shows up on phone and sometimes doesn't. In any case the
transfer fails.

Additional notes: Error was observed before,
see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=202815, however suggested
solution on that page doesn't work for me so I assume there is some difference.
