[Bug 348043] Re: [jaunty] Screen brightness is minimal until login
Amol, I just rebooted to see, and I can also confirm brightness is normal on GRUB and on the boot process until it loads the drivers. So I guess the problem is the same then. ** Description changed: This is a regression from early Jaunty Alphas and Intrepid. - When you boot, the screen brightness is set up to the lowest value. This - remains like that in GDM, and is only set up to a reasonable value after - you login and see your desktop. + When you boot, the screen starts at a normal brightness and stays that + way through GRUB, but becomes dark early in the linux boot process. + Specifically, when it says "loading hardware drivers", the screen + brightness is set up to the lowest value. [Bug 250973] Re: Create Package: proxychains version 3.1
Sure. 1- Get a proxy, or make your own with a ssh tunnel (ssh -D 9090 u...@server.com will give you a socks5 proxy on port 9090, localhost) 2- Configure proxychains to use that proxy (edit /etc/proxychains, set the proxy up, and disable the DNS proxyfication, it usually doesn't work well, it's an app problem. You can do that by commenting proxy_dns in the file) 3- Run an app through proxychains, by issuing "proxychains command" on a console. For example, proxychains firefox launches firefox using the proxy, and proxychains wget http://www.google.com/ downloads google index through the proxy. [Bug 270184] [NEW] PHY reset until link up excesive log on dmesg
Public bug reported: The sis190 driver generates a "PHY reset until link up" message on the system logs every 5 or 10 seconds. That means that when you type 'dmesg' there is A LOT of useless logs. Cause: the network cable is not connected. Fix: Unload the current drivers: sudo modprobe -v -r sis190 Download the kernel source code (2.6.24-19-generic) edit this file on the kernel source: drivers/net/sis190.c and change this: #define SIS190_MSG_DEFAULT (NETIF_MSG_DRV | NETIF_MSG_PROBE | \ NETIF_MSG_LINK | NETIF_MSG_IFUP | \ NETIF_MSG_IFDOWN) for this: /*dc740 FIX: Disable a really annoying driver log. "PHY reset until link up." */ #define SIS190_MSG_DEFAULT (NETIF_MSG_DRV | NETIF_MSG_PROBE | \ NETIF_MSG_IFUP | NETIF_MSG_IFDOWN) after changing the driver source code then we compile and install the new modified and fixed driver, like this: sudo make drivers/net/sis190.ko sudo cp drivers/net/sis190.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/ sudo modprobe -v sis190 sudo ifconfig eth0 up And the problem is gone. This happens because the driver logs that the cable link y down by default, thanks to this: "NETIF_MSG_LINK" Of course this log is useless and it souldn't be there. The easy fix is to change the default logging parameters. lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release:8.04 I hope to see this change on the next kernel release, but I don't know where to report it. [Bug 270184] Re: PHY reset until link up excesive log on dmesg
Seems that there is also a workaround for this problem, using ethtool to tell the driver no to log so many things. So the only question is : Is a message telling you every 10 seconds that the cable is not plugged in really needed?¿ should it be enabled by default? I mean: it's a useful message when you have really serious problems on a connection and you can't get it working. BUT, on a normal system, (for example a desktop with a wireless card that almost doesn't use the ethernet port) is this message needed? or it just makes the log file bigger and bigger every 10 seconds? My opinion, and the opinion of some users that reported this as a problem on other forums, is that this message is really useless on a system. And anyway it would be used only in special occasions, so why is it enabled by default? -- PHY reset until link up excesive log on dmesg https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/270184 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 320173] [NEW] [jaunty] Mouse and keyboard stop responding
Public bug reported: Randomly, the system stops responding to keyboard and mouse input. Both the mouse and the touchpad still move the pointer, but clicking does nothing. As regards the keyboard, it doesn't input anything on applications, nor hotkeys work. The system itself is responsive (for example, the network applet signal meter moves, the time applet changes as time passes, etc). Changing to terminals doesn't work either, but Sysrq does. I can restart the system through pressing the power button and waiting for the 60 seconds on the window that appears, or by using sysrq (Alt+Impr Pant+REISUB) I'm using an updated Ubuntu Jaunty, on an acer Aspire 6930 laptop. The touchpad is a synaptics one, and the mouse is a Microsoft Confort Optical Mouse 3000. [Bug 328156] [NEW] There is a big delay between logging in in GDM and getting the desktop fully loaded
Public bug reported: When I type my user and password and log in, the GNOME desktop takes a big time to load. Just after pressing enter to log in, the screen changes to the system's background color and remains like that for a while. There doesn't seem to occur any disk IO during that time. Some seconds later (like 10 seconds), disk IO appears, and after a while more, the desktop starts to appear: background image first, then the panels, the applets, etc. My PC is not old, it's a Core 2 Duo T5800 @ 2Ghz with 3GB of RAM, so I think it shouldn't be this slow. [Bug 352041] Re: ekiga crashed with SIGSEGV in std::string::append()
I can confirm this too. Ekiga crashes when you try to dial without typing a number (the input box says "sip:" only). This is completely reproducible. uname -a Linux laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 8 04:39:23 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux ekiga: Installed: 3.2.0-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 3.2.0-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 3.2.0-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://ar.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Changed in: ekiga (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- ekiga crashed with SIGSEGV in std::string::append() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/352041 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
