[Bug 258801] Re: Gets bogus DNS servers during PPP negotiation

In my case the bug is still there. May be less frequent then before but
it is clearly unsolved.

[Bug 299571] [NEW] Ubuntu hangs when network-manager attempts to reconnect to a mobile network

2008-11-18 Thread emilio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I am running ubuntu 8.10 and NM 0.7 on a Dell inspiron 6000 and I
connect to 3 UK mobile broadband with a external usb dongle Huawei
E169G.

After a lost connection, when I try to reconnect Ubuntu hangs
completely. The keyboard and mouse become irresponsive and the only
solution is to reboot the machine.

Note that this result is not consistent but it happens approximately one
out of five reconnection attempts.

[Bug 258801] Re: Gets bogus DNS servers during PPP negotiation

2008-11-21 Thread emilio
I found the binaries and tested them. At least in my case there is no
improvement whatsoever. Still get dummy connections without DNS server.
The only difference I can notice is in syslog where the following lines
are not appearing any more.

Aug 17 13:59:37 perseus pppd[29978]: primary DNS address 10.11.12.13
Aug 17 13:59:37 perseus pppd[29978]: secondary DNS address 10.11.12.14

I attach /var/log/syslog in case of successful and unsuccessful
connections

[Bug 348043] Re: [jaunty] Screen brightness is minimal until login

2009-06-15 Thread Emilio
Amol, I just rebooted to see, and I can also confirm brightness is
normal on GRUB and on the boot process until it loads the drivers. So I
guess the problem is the same then.

** Description changed:

  This is a regression from early Jaunty Alphas and Intrepid.

- When you boot, the screen brightness is set up to the lowest value. This
- remains like that in GDM, and is only set up to a reasonable value after
- you login and see your desktop.
+ When you boot, the screen starts at a normal brightness and stays that
+ way through GRUB, but becomes dark early in the linux boot process.
+ Specifically, when it says "loading hardware drivers", the screen
+ brightness is set up to the lowest value. This remains like that in GDM,
+ and is only set up to a reasonable value after you login and see your
+ desktop.

  For now, a workaround is to make the brightness higher with the
  brightness hotkeys on the laptop.

  I'm using an up-to-date Jaunty. Please ask for any information you think
  is necessary, I really don't know what thing is failing.

[Bug 331322] Re: DNS not set during PPP connection

2009-02-26 Thread emilio
I can confirm this bug. I have also tested two different laptops (Dell
Inspiron 6000 and Dell Latitude E4300) and in both configurations the
DNS connection is not consistent.

I travel a lot and I have noted that bad connections tend to happen
always in the same places? Is this a cell related problem? I.e. ppp is
not capable of receiving the DNS for certain cells?

[Bug 250973] Re: Create Package: proxychains version 3.1

2009-02-27 Thread Emilio
Sure.

1- Get a proxy, or make your own with a ssh tunnel (ssh -D 9090 u...@server.com
will give you a socks5 proxy on port 9090, localhost)
2- Configure proxychains to use that proxy (edit /etc/proxychains, set the
proxy up, and disable the DNS proxyfication, it usually doesn't work well, it's
an app problem. You can do that by commenting proxy_dns in the file)
3- Run an app through proxychains, by issuing "proxychains command" on a
console. For example, proxychains firefox launches firefox using the proxy, and
proxychains wget http://www.google.com/ downloads google index through the
proxy.

That's it :)

[Bug 270184] [NEW] PHY reset until link up excesive log on dmesg

2008-09-14 Thread Emilio
Public bug reported:

The sis190 driver generates a "PHY reset until link up" message on the
system logs every 5 or 10 seconds. That means that when you type 'dmesg'
there is A LOT of useless logs.

Cause: the network cable is not connected.

Fix:
Unload the current drivers:
sudo modprobe -v -r sis190

Download the kernel source code (2.6.24-19-generic)
 edit this file on the kernel source: drivers/net/sis190.c
and change this:
#define SIS190_MSG_DEFAULT (NETIF_MSG_DRV | NETIF_MSG_PROBE | \
NETIF_MSG_LINK | NETIF_MSG_IFUP | \
NETIF_MSG_IFDOWN)

for this:
/*dc740 FIX:
Disable a really annoying driver log.
"PHY reset until link up."
*/
#define SIS190_MSG_DEFAULT (NETIF_MSG_DRV | NETIF_MSG_PROBE | \
NETIF_MSG_IFUP | NETIF_MSG_IFDOWN)

after changing the driver source code then we compile and install the new
modified and fixed driver, like this:
sudo make drivers/net/sis190.ko
sudo cp drivers/net/sis190.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/
sudo modprobe -v sis190
sudo ifconfig eth0 up

And the problem is gone.

This happens because the driver logs that the cable link y down by default,
thanks to this: "NETIF_MSG_LINK"
Of course this log is useless and it souldn't be there. The easy fix is to
change the default logging parameters.

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

I hope to see this change on the next kernel release, but I don't know
where to report it.

[Bug 270184] Re: PHY reset until link up excesive log on dmesg

2008-09-15 Thread Emilio
Seems that there is also a workaround for this problem, using ethtool to
tell the driver no to log so many things. So the only question is : Is a
message telling you every 10 seconds that the cable is not plugged in
really needed?¿ should it be enabled by default?

I mean: it's a useful message when you have really serious problems on a
connection and you can't get it working. BUT, on a normal system, (for
example a desktop with a wireless card that almost doesn't use the
ethernet port) is this message needed? or it just makes the log file
bigger and bigger every 10 seconds?

My opinion, and the opinion of some users that reported this as a
problem on other forums, is that this message is really useless on a
system. And anyway it would be used only in special occasions, so why is
it enabled by default?

[Bug 323751] [NEW] Nautilus segfaults when copying several groups of files to a FTP server

2009-01-31 Thread Emilio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This problem can be reproduced easily.

Steps to reproduce:
1- Connect to a FTP server
2- Copy a group of files, or a directory
3- While files from 2 are still being copied, copy another group of files to
the same server

Expected result: Nautilus copies them simultaneously, and, if not
possible, waits until the first connection is freed and copy them using
it.

Actual result: Nautilus segfaults.

As a temporal workaround, you can use FileZilla or any other FTP Client.

[Bug 320525] Re: jaunty unbootable on intel G45 since .28-5 kernel update

2009-01-23 Thread Emilio
I'm also experiencing this problem after applying today's updates. TTYs
work fine, but GDM displays a black-and-white garbled screen. If I go to
a tty and run a ps -e, I can see some failsafeXinit processes, so I
guess it's using the vesa driver, which seems to be broken.

My card, as reported by vista, is a "Mobile Intel 4 Series Express
Chipset Family". If you need any other information, just ask.

[Bug 320173] [NEW] [jaunty] Mouse and keyboard stop responding

2009-01-22 Thread Emilio
Public bug reported:

Randomly, the system stops responding to keyboard and mouse input. Both
the mouse and the touchpad still move the pointer, but clicking does
nothing. As regards the keyboard, it doesn't input anything on
applications, nor hotkeys work. The system itself is responsive (for
example, the network applet signal meter moves, the time applet changes
as time passes, etc). Changing to terminals doesn't work either, but
Sysrq does. I can restart the system through pressing the power button
and waiting for the 60 seconds on the window that appears, or by using
sysrq (Alt+Impr Pant+REISUB)

I'm using an updated Ubuntu Jaunty, on an acer Aspire 6930 laptop. The
touchpad is a synaptics one, and the mouse is a Microsoft Confort
Optical Mouse 3000.

(By the way, I didn't report using ubuntu-bug -p xorg as suggested, as
it throws an error - I think I should fill in a bug report for that too)

[Bug 328156] [NEW] There is a big delay between logging in in GDM and getting the desktop fully loaded

2009-02-11 Thread Emilio
Public bug reported:

When I type my user and password and log in, the GNOME desktop takes a
big time to load. Just after pressing enter to log in, the screen
changes to the system's background color and remains like that for a
while. There doesn't seem to occur any disk IO during that time. Some
seconds later (like 10 seconds), disk IO appears, and after a while
more, the desktop starts to appear: background image first, then the
panels, the applets, etc.

My PC is not old, it's a Core 2 Duo T5800 @ 2Ghz with 3GB of RAM, so I
think it shouldn't be this slow. My video card is an "Intel Corporation
Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)" one, if
that matters.

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04
Sorry for not assigning a package, but I don't know whether this is a GDM
problem, an X.org problem or a GNOME problem

[Bug 303011] Re: [i945] 2.5.1 driver poor performance

2009-02-14 Thread Emilio
Well, I disabled VBlank and got a boost, but it's still real slow:

4312 frames in 5.0 seconds = 862.341 FPS
4288 frames in 5.0 seconds = 857.482 FPS
4141 frames in 5.0 seconds = 828.042 FPS
4223 frames in 5.0 seconds = 844.442 FPS

thing with OpenGL Games. I have disabled compiz for now until this is

[Bug 250973] Re: Create Package: proxychains version 3.1

2009-02-14 Thread Emilio
Here is an updated diff.gz. I fixed all the lintian warnings except the
libtool one (I couldn't relibtoolize it, it's too hard for me). Hope you
can do that, or include the package all the same (it compiles cleanly in
i386, amd64 and lpia, as you can see in my PPA
https://launchpad.net/~turl/+archive/ppa). As the lintian warning said,
if it compiled OK it could be omitted.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

[Bug 320979] Re: Trackpad crashed on Jaunty update

2009-02-10 Thread Emilio
I can confirm that, after a clean Jaunty install, the xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics package is NOT installed. I had to install it manually
to make my touchpad work.

[Bug 332343] [NEW] [jaunty] "Available to all users" is impossible to set

2009-02-20 Thread Emilio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

If you edit a wireless network connection, tick "Available to all users"
and then try to Apply, the "Apply" button does nothing. Unticking
"Available to all users" and applying works.

By the way, when you tick the option, the icon that is inside the button
changes to a little key.

[Bug 307307] Re: intel 5100 wifi link - drops connection to access point/router every few minutes

2009-03-21 Thread emilio
I have a similar problem with a dell latitude e4300 and a belkin N1
router. The problem is limited to high bandwidth situations (e.g.,
playing youtube videos). The connection drops (although the network icon
status does not change) and then is again active in about one minute.

[Bug 348043] [NEW] [jaunty] Screen brightness is minimal until login

2009-03-24 Thread Emilio
Public bug reported:

This is a regression from early Jaunty Alphas and Intrepid.

When you boot, the screen brightness is set up to the lowest value. This
remains like that in GDM, and is only set up to a reasonable value after
you login and see your desktop.

For now, a workaround is to make the brightness higher with the
brightness hotkeys on the laptop.

I'm using an up-to-date Jaunty. Please ask for any information you think
is necessary, I really don't know what thing is failing.

[Bug 348093] [NEW] Brightness keys ACPI events are not translated to keycodes

2009-03-24 Thread Emilio
Public bug reported:

The brightness Keys in my Acer Aspire 6930 laptop are generating ACPI
events, but no keycodes.

Following the debug procedures in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting:
1- Killed the 2 daemons
2, 3, 4- xev doesn't show any keypress when changing brightness
5, 6- I identified the brightness switcher as "Lid Switcher"

udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_logicaldev_input_4'
  button.has_state = true  (bool)
  button.state.value = false  (bool)
  button.type = 'lid'  (string)
  info.addons.singleton = {'hald-addon-input'} (string list)
  info.capabilities = {'input', 'input.switch', 'button'} (string list)
  info.category = 'input'  (string)
  info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer'  (string)
  info.product = 'Lid Switch'  (string)
  info.subsystem = 'input'  (string)
  info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_logicaldev_input_4'
(string)
  input.device = '/dev/input/event1'  (string)
  input.product = 'Lid Switch'  (string)
  linux.device_file = '/dev/input/event1'  (string)
  linux.hotplug_type = 2  (0x2)  (int)
  linux.subsystem = 'input'  (string)
  linux.sysfs_path =
'/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0C0D:00/input/input1/event1'  (string)

7- Running sudo input-events 1 shows nothing when changing brightness

/dev/input/event1
   bustype : BUS_HOST
   vendor  : 0x0
   product : 0x5
   version : 0
   name: "Lid Switch"
   phys: "PNP0C0D/button/input0"
   bits ev : EV_SYN EV_SW

waiting for events
timeout, quitting

11- Running acpi_listen shows ACPI events

video DD04 0087
video DD04 0086

(87 is "less brightness", 86 is "more brightness")

12- I conclude this is a kernel bug, as ACPI events occur, but the
kernel does not translate them to keypresses.
