[Bug 247729] Re: Wine should install (some) fonts system wide in a separate package

2008-08-07 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Two things could be wrong with that font

1. WineTahoma is a Bitstream Vera Sans derivative, it must have the same
license.

See the copyright notice in the ttf file:
Copyright (c) 2004 Larry Snyder, Based on Bitstream Vera Sans Copyright (c)
2003 by Bitstream, Inc. Font renamed in accordance with former's license.
Please do not contact Bitstream Inc. for any reason regaurding this font.

Yet the license is LGPL.

2. Some characters are poorly drawn, this could be really bad at some sizes but
turns out fine for Wine's usage.
The Bitstream Vera Sans glyphs have been modified to look narrower and thus
match Tahoma more. Some look really strange, as if only part of them add been
condensed: '5', '6', '9', 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'g', 'p'.

I'm not sure this offers much when compared with DejaVu Sans Condensed, except
for having some bitmapped sizes.
The license issue should be fixed, regardless of this bug report.

[Bug 260589] [NEW] combining diacritics replaced by deadkeys

2008-08-22 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 4:
Selecting the CD (Congo, Democratic Republic of the) keyboard layout,
Press keys 'e' followed by '3' (which is U+0301)
Result is just e, and if something else is pressed, the result is as if it was
a dead key
So 'e''3''e' give "eé"

This wrong as the combining diacritic is necessary for things like ɛ́ and the
key isn't behave as the layout was designed!
Other keys with combining diacritics behave the same broken way.

This worked fine in Heron.

2006-08-07 Thread Denis Jacquerye
What's blocking from including ijs_server_epsonepl from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/epsonepl/ ?

Right now it's very annoying because the epsonepl printers are listed as
supported but are not at all due to that missing executable file.
Most users won't know why it's not working. Either remove the printers from the
list or add the required file for them to work.

[Bug 147433] Unicode equivalences broken in tracker

2007-09-30 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

Tracker doesn't give the same result for two different search of equivalent
strings.
This used to work, give the same matches, but is now broken.

Example: Searching for 'école' (NFC) and 'école' (NFD) yield different results.
Files with one form will no match search for the other form when they should as
both form are defined as equivalent by Unicode.
Some results are even false positives, i.e. don't even have a match. It seems
the query is broken into two words at the combining characters, when it
shouldn't. Searching 'école' (NFD) seems to look for 'e cole' ('e' AND 'cole').

[Bug 134797] ttf-dejavu-core should include Oblique

2007-08-25 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

The package ttf-dejavu-core contains only DejaVu Sans Book and Bold,
DejaVu Sans Mono Book and Bold, and DejaVu Serif Book and Bold. The
package ttf-dejavu-extra contains all the other fonts.

However, as mentioned on http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/, only DejaVu Sans
ExtraLight, DejaVu Serif Italic and Bold Italic, and Condensed variants are
experimental. There is no reason why DejaVu Sans Oblique and Bold Oblique,
DejaVu Sans Mono Oblique and Bold Oblique should be out of ttf-dejavu-core.
DejaVu Serif Italic and Bold Italic could also be in ttf-dejavu-core.

The package ttf-dejavu-core contains:
DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf
DejaVuSans.ttf
DejaVuSansMono-Bold.ttf
DejaVuSansMono.ttf
DejaVuSerif-Bold.ttf
DejaVuSerif.ttf

The package ttf-dejavu-core contains:
DejaVuSans-BoldOblique.ttf
DejaVuSans-ExtraLight.ttf
DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf
DejaVuSansCondensed-Bold.ttf
DejaVuSansCondensed-BoldOblique.ttf
DejaVuSansCondensed-Oblique.ttf
DejaVuSansCondensed.ttf
DejaVuSansMono-BoldOblique.ttf
DejaVuSansMono-Oblique.ttf
DejaVuSerif-BoldItalic.ttf
DejaVuSerif-Italic.ttf
DejaVuSerifCondensed-Bold.ttf
DejaVuSerifCondensed-BoldItalic.ttf
DejaVuSerifCondensed-Italic.ttf
DejaVuSerifCondensed.ttf

The following should be in ttf-dejavu-core
DejaVuSans-BoldOblique.ttf
DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf
DejaVuSansMono-BoldOblique.ttf
DejaVuSansMono-Oblique.ttf

The following could be in ttf-dejavu-core (to allow Serif Italic in OpenOffice
for example):
DejaVuSerif-BoldItalic.ttf
DejaVuSerif-Italic.ttf

[Bug 137203] search adds slash to escaped strings

2007-09-03 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

On gutsy, with gedit 2.19.91, search for things like "\nli" works, i.e.
find the expected "li" after a new line.

Then things go wrong. When opening the search dialog a second time, the
search string has been replaced with "\\nli", escaping the backslashes
in the search string. So searching for "\n\n" works and then become
"\\n\\n".

[Bug 137203] Re: search adds slash to escaped strings

2007-09-04 Thread Denis Jacquerye
I’m confused or my report was poorly written.

I search for "\nTest" which has an escaped character which means new
line. That's totally fine for me and that is not what my bug is about.

The bug I am reporting is that i search for "\nTest" which is matched or
not. Everything is fine.

Then if I want to search for another occurance of "\nTest" and I reopen the
search dialog, the search string has been escaped and thus doesn’t return the
wanted result.
Original search string = "\nTest"
Second search string = "\\nTest"

This is deeply wrong as it renders the memory of the search dialog
useless since it is corrupted.

Sorry for the spam but this might make it even clearer:

What happens to the search string in the search dialog as it is reopend (1st

[Bug 117214] ttf-junicode missing hinting instructions

2007-05-27 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

The TTF files packages in ttf-junicode are missing TTF hinting instructions.
The instructions are avalaible in the xgridfit directory of junicode source.
To generate the TTF with their instructions, xgridfit is a prerequiste.

The fonts should be generated with the commands
$ xgridfit Junicode-Regular.xgf
which creates are Junicode-Regular.pe for fontforge to add instructions before
generating the TTF
$ fontforge -script Junicode-Regular.pe
which generates the TTF with hinting instructions.
Repeat for Bold and Italics (BoldItalics isn't hinted yet).

[Bug 118871] devanagari fonts break licenses

2007-06-05 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

ttf-devanagari-fonts breaks several font's licenses by using Latin glyph
from those without respecting it (non free fonts and free fonts).

- Chandas uses Bitstream Vera Sans without using the Bitstream Vera license. It
only specifies the GPL license.
- Kalimati uses Tahoma, thus breaking its copyright. It specifies "© Sanir
Karmacharya, Suyash Shrestha"
- Samanata uses Eurostile, thus breaking its copyright. It specifies "© Samir
Karmacharya, Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Aksharyogini, Gargi, Nakula, Sahadeva, uses Latin glyphs from what looks like
Nimbus Serif/Sans which are under GPL so they are clean.
Lohit doesn't seem to have borrowed glyphs.

Fonts which break copyright _should not_ be distributed unless the
license are fixed and copyrights are respected.

2007-06-06 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Rachana is GPL, it could use Nimbus Sans's or Free Sans' Latin script which are
GPL.
But I'm not sure what's the point of copying the Latin script glyphs of another
font if the resulting glyphs are not different.
Most Linux software uses fontconfig for font substitution for missing
characters or users can select the appropriate font.
Another option is to draw new glyphs.

[Bug 107226] Re: Hebrew Sans fonts distorted in Feisty

2007-04-20 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Assigning bug to DejaVu fonts since the glyphs show are from there.

What do you mean by "FreeSans still shows Hebrew correctly"?
What is not correct in DejaVu Sans besides the glyphs being wider?

DejaVu Sans Being wider is a feature, some fonts have wider glyphs for better
readability at small sizes.
If you preferred more condensed characters, you can use DejaVu Condensed, but I
strongly suggest using the autohinter.

[Bug 92876] Re: Samsom C01U usb microphone doesn't work

2007-03-17 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Hmm, now Audacity is able to access the device to record, but it has no
device to output to. So I'm able to record, with the Samsom or the
webcam but unable to playback.

Gnome Sound recorder lists nothing as a possible input device, yet it
should since it uses gstreamer. Gstr-properties lists both devices but
doesn't record/playback anything when testing either.

Gnome Sound recorder seems to lock the device but not record anything from it,
i.e., clicking record doesn't create anything but unplayable seconds. But while
it is open, I
gst-launch-0.10 alsasrc=hw:1,0 ! audioconvert ! vorbisenc ! oggmux ! filesink
location=input.ogg
and get the warning: Device 'hw:1,0' is busy.

With the Sound recorder closed, gst-launch can record. The Samsom has
some weird configuration so the volume control actually don't do what
they are expected to do. For example, full left and right channel give
only left channel.

2007-03-21 Thread Denis Jacquerye
This seems to be trigger by the glx module.
When I updated to xorg_1:7.2-0ubuntu8, glx stopped working and now the
screensaver doesn't mess up gamma correction.

[Bug 85734] wrong fontviewer is used by default

2007-02-17 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

KFontview is installed because Konqueror or some other KDE apps depend on it.
When in Gnome, the default font viewer is set to KFontview for some reason if
it is installed.
KFontview is very slow to load compared to fontfilus.

KFontview should not be the default app when Opening a font file.

There should be a way to choose which fontview is default.

** Affects: Ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 75608] combining diacritics should be CTL

2006-12-13 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Public bug reported:

Openoffice doesn't consider combining diacritics to be CTL and therefore
doesn't use the placement data available in some fonts. For example 'ɛ́ Ɛ́'
should display the combining acute on top of the ɛ, not merging with the Ɛ.
Some fonts like DejaVu Serif/Sans, Junicode, Doulos SIL, Charis SIL can place
those combining diacritics correctly but Openoffice does not allow it.

vcl/source/gdi/outdev3.cxx
has a line disabling CTL for the range 0x0300 to 0x0370
This should be removed.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package
'openoffice'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.
