Public bug reported: On edgy: libfreetype6_2.2.1-2 has a nasty bug that doesn't correclty apply some instructions on composite glyphs, rendering ugly things like "ä" or "î" with totally distorted accents depending on the font. DejaVu Sans is one font affected by this bug.
