[Bug 388647] [NEW] Progress bar at end most of the time

2009-06-17 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.04

update-manager 1:0.111.9

When clicking "Check" in the GUI the "Downloading Package Information" dialog
appears, with a useless progress bar:
 - it start at 0% and moves towards 100%
 - but at some moment is jumps back to 0%
 - then it reaches 90%
 - 95%
 - jumps back to 90%
 - jumps quickly at values from 90% to 100%

It is mostly useless as an indicator of progress.

I recommend to either fix it or remove it.

[Bug 388655] [NEW] Help takes too long to appear

2009-06-17 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.04

gnome-utils 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
yelp 2.25.1-0ubuntu5

Steps I did:
 - press PrtScr key
 - in the Screenshot dialog, click Help
 - as nothing happens, click again

after a few seconds one, then another help window appers. Both empty
(white).

After an eternity (15 seconds), some content appears in them, but then
both disappear.

Later on that day:
 - press PrtScr key
 - in the Screenshot dialog, click Help
 - after a second the help window appears, empty
After another 15 seconds, finally I can see the help (with errors, another bug
report).

15 seconds is way too long for help to appear. This is not a 486 running
an RLL hard drive...

[Bug 388655] Re: Help takes too long to appear

2009-06-20 Thread David Balažic
I just tried a fresh install in VMWare.
After clicking help in gnome-screenshot, it takes 4 seconds for the help window
to appear and then 8 seconds more for the content to appear.

It is a fresh install with defult settings.
This happened on a fresh boot, right after login. No other programs started.

I looked with "ps auxw | grep yelp" and it did not find any at any time.

For the gnome-screenshot it always loads the help about 10 seconds.
For gcalctool it loads instantly.
For Disk Usage Analyzer (Baobad 2.26.0) it does not load at all due to some
invalid URI error.

 - select menu Applications / Accessories / Terminal
 - in the file browser windows right click first icon, labeled "CD-RW/DVD+RW
Drive" and in the popu menu select "Eject"

An error dialog pops up : "Unable to mount media. / There is probably no
media in the drive."

This was a simple default install in VMWare, so if you can not reproduce
it, then close the bug, because I don't see what more can I contribute.

[Bug 232175] [NEW] parted gets partitions wrong

2008-05-20 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: parted

I have two partitions on /dev/sdc, but parted (and also gparted) claims
there is one, covering the whole device.

fdisk and sfdisk get it correctly. Also the kernel reads it correctly
(as I can mount both).

[Bug 232187] [NEW] Phantom "SCSI Drive" in "Computer - File Browser"

2008-05-20 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

When opening the menu item Places / Computer, in the opened window there is an
item labeled
"SCSI Drive", next to floppy, CD/DVD units and harddrive partitions.

I have no SCSI hardware.
I also opened the properties of this icon, but found no clue, what is is
supposed to represent.

As I have two floppy units, but only one is displayed, I suspect this SCSI icon
is somehow related
to it.

[Bug 232190] [NEW] file browser copies folder into own subfolder recursively

2008-05-20 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

ubuntu 8.04 i386 desktop CD fresh install

In File Browser if the user drags a folder (the "box" in the path, see picture)
into its own content,
then it will make a copy of the folder in its own subfolder, thereby making an
infinite recursion.

It should detect and refuse the bad copy procedure.

Currently it starts copying, until it hits some limit of the system
(disk space, max path length etc.) and then reports an error.

[Bug 232550] [NEW] "Connect to Server..." does not mount Windows Share

2008-05-21 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 8.04 i386 desktop CD fresh installation

Steps:
 - boot installed system from harddrive
 - login
 - click Places / Connect to Server...
 - select "Service type" "Windows share"
 - enter Server: 10.1.2.3 (a valid servers address)
 - enter Share: share1 (valid share name on that server)
 - enter User Name : xerces8 (valid username ...)
 - enter Domain Name: FOO (valid domain name for the user name)
 - click "Connect"
 - in the password dialog enter correct password
 - click "Connect"

Result:
An error dialog without a title appears, saying:
Can't display location "smb://10.1.2.3/share1/"
The specified location is not mounted

Running the following in a command line works fine:
$ smbclient  //10.1.2.3/share1 -U FOO\\xerces8
Password: *

It connects and can access the remote files.

I can reproduce this on my home system and also under vmware at my workplace.

[Bug 232634] [NEW] "Sharing Options" does not work

2008-05-21 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce (worked for me on two different systems):

 - boot & login into a fresh clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 i386
 - right click on desktop, select "Create Folder"
 - name it anything
 - right click the folder icon
 - select "Sharing Options"
 - a dialog titled "File Manager" appears, having text "Folder Sharing"
 - before it, another dialog appears, saying:
Sharing service is not installed
You need to install the Windows networks sharing service in order to share your
folders.
with buttons "Close" and "Install Service"
 - click "Install Service"
 - a dialog asks for user password for administrative tasks, enter it
 - in the "File Manager" dialog enable the option "Share this folder"
 -- enter a share name, like "share2"
-- enable the option "Allow other people to write in this folder"
 -- enter a comment
-- click the "Create Share" button
 - a dialog appears saying:
Nautilus needs to add some permissions to your folder "untitled folder" in
order to share it
 -- click "Add..."
 - the "Folder Sharing" dialog reappears with this text at bottom :
Samba's testparm returned error 1: Load smb config files from
/etc/samba/smb.conf
Processing section "[printers]"
Processing section "[print$]"
Loaded services file OK.
ERROR: lock directory /var/run/samba does not exist
ERROR: pid directory /var/run/samba does not exist

After manualy creating that dir, and retrying everything, I get :

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare
directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

The System / Administration menu is missing the Shared Folders Admin tool, but
after browsing the help,
I discovered the shares-admin command line. When started it presents me with a
dialog saying
Sharing services are not installed
You need to install at least either Samba or NFS in order to share your folders.

If I select the offerend SMB option (and uncheck NFS) and click the "Install
services",
then the dialog disappears, but after 2 seconds it comes back. With no
explanation.
I repeated this 4 times, before giving up on folder sharing

[Bug 259540] [NEW] Wubi - "No root file system is defined" error

2008-08-19 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

I started the Ubuntu 8.04.1 amd64 CD in Windows and selected "Install inside
Windows" option.
Then in the "Ubuntu Setup" dialog I left the default options (which were :
"C:", "15", "Ubuntu", "English" and "administrator") , entered a password
(twice of course) and clicked "Install".

After some copying it rebooted.
In the Boot menu I choose "Ubuntu". For a few seconds it displayed a warning*,
then started loading.

After the desktop was loaded, an error dialog appeared, saying:

No root file system is defined.

Please correct this from the partitioning menu.

(see screenshot)

After clicking OK, the same dialog reappears. (many times)
So the installation is stuck at this point.

The existing OS is Windows 2008 Datacenter x64.
The harddrive is a Dynamic Disc, having one NTFS partition (C:).

* - the warning is :
Warning: Unrecognized Partition Table for Drive 80. Please rebuild it using
a Microsoft-compatible FDISK tool(err=114). Current C/H/S=16383/31/63
Press 'ESC' to enter the menu...

[Bug 259574] [NEW] firefox flash install requires restart

2008-08-19 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04.1 amd64 - fresh install with updates

When firefox encounters a page which uses flash, it displays that plugin
frame, which upon clicking triggers the plugin installation.

But after the plugin is installed, the page still show that frame. Even after
reloading the page.
Clicking it opens again the plugin installation wizard, but this time it says,
that the flash plugin is already installed.

It only works after closing and restarting firefox.

Either:
 - the plugin should work without restart
or
 - the install wizard should inform the user that the change will be effective
only after closing and restaring firefox

[Bug 259872] [NEW] npviewer.bin consumes 100% CPU hangs machine

Public bug reported:

[Bug 232184] Re: can't mount FAT formatted DVD-RAM

2008-08-29 Thread David Balažic
1.) I said that the command line mount works just fine, so the kernel
(the old kernel) can handle it just fine.

2.) I know you are all busy, but a DVD-RAM costs a few dollars and it
takes 10 seconds to format it. So you could get all the info you
asked... from yourself.

3.) If I find the DVD and a Ubuntu installation on one of my PCs, I will

[Bug 189288] Re: Couldn't open display computer:/// Places Computer

I tried ubuntu-9.04-beta-desktop-i386.iso on vmware and after boot the

removed).

[Bug 397127] [NEW] connecting to SMB share gives no error code

2009-07-08 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

When the server password is expired, Ubuntu gives no error message at
all.

Ubuntu 9.04 x86 - up to date as of Wed Jul 8 18:43:33 UTC 2009

Steps:
 - log in (as main/only user)
 - select menu Places / Computer
in File Browser window
 - select "Network" in left pane (location changes to network:/// )
there is already a near computer shown as icon
 - double click the computer icon
 - fill out the dialog (user, pass)

After few seconds, the user/pass dialog reappears.
Repeat, until bored.

(a semilong story about what everything I tried to resolve the problem -
not printed here)

Checking with smbclient reveals that the used password was expired.
Luckily I know that the Ubuntu GUI is next to useless and have experience with
command line.
If this would happen to my father, we would give me a call as say "When you get
home set mu up Windows, which works"

[Bug 397134] [NEW] When renaming file, focus is on dektop

2009-07-08 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.04 , up to date as of Wed Jul 8 19:04:18 UTC 2009

Version:
nautilus 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2

I can not reproduce it, but report it, so i does not get lost.

See screenshot.

I right clicked the icon for the folder named "Slike" and tried to
position the text cursor by using the cursor keys left and right.

But it did not work. After a few seconds I noticed that the cursor keys
move the selection of the icons on desktop.

As if the desktop would have focus.

situation as much as possible)

2009-07-09 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

Right clicking the icon on the above menu (applet) and selecting "Edit

in a table format, with two columns.

Problem: The columns have no header. For example it shows the text
"never", without any explanation what this is supposed to mean. There is
also no Help button, pressing the F1 key does nothing.

[Bug 398428] [NEW] folder sharing not working without reboot

2009-07-12 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 9.04 (up to date) I did this:
- create a folder in home dir
- right click it and select "Sharing Options"
- in the dialog enabled "Share this folder"
- OK'ed the dialog saying to install sharing components, entered password
- in a dialog telling me that a restart of session is needed, I clicked
"Restart"

Expected result: Being able to access the shared folder from other PC

Actual result: When trying to open the shared folder on other PC
(Windows XP Pro SP3) it pops up a dialog asking for username and
password. I enter my username and password that I use on the linux box,
but it just shows the same dialog again.

The share (also new created ones) appears in the My Network Places, I
just can not open it due to authentication failure.

That was yesterday. Since then I shut down my Ubuntu box and todey I
started it again. Now, sharing works as expected: I click the share on
the Windows PC, it asks for user/pass, I enter it, and voila, I have
access to shared files.

It seems the mentioned "restart" button does not do its work properly.

[Bug 410085] [NEW] should not read image file just for checksum

2009-08-06 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Recently I burned a DVD-R from an ISO image file.
It was very slow.

The reason: brasero reads the input ISO file twice, once for the
checksum, then again for the actual burning.

In my case the file was heavily fragmented and the performance was very
poor (5 minutes to read the file instead of 1 minute when not
fragmented).

The fragmentation is a separate issue, but braseo could be optimized by reading
the file only once.
While burning, it could parallelly compute the checksum.

Or if that is hard to implement: Do not use checksum at all, but compare
the burned data to the input file. This way in case of verify error, the
exact point(s)/sectors(s) of mismatch can be identified.

Frankly, the current way of doing seems the wors possible (except if the
checksum is remembered, but reading other bugs suggests that it is not).

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: brasero 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: brasero
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-14-generic i686

[Bug 401070] [NEW] apport-collect does not specify wanted access level in launchpad

2009-07-18 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

I started apport-collect as requested by a developer and it put me up the
"Authorize application to access Launchpad on your behalf" page and printed:
Logging into Launchpad...
The authorization page
(https://edge.launchpad.net/+authorize-token?oauth_token=z77tQ23wTmQzhBxGzkpm)
should be opening in your browser. After you have authorized this program to
access Launchpad on your behalf you should come back here and press to
finish the authentication process.

The page offers 4 different authorization levels. How should the user know
which one is required for apport-collect ?

apport 1.0-0ubuntu5.2
