[Bug 54513] DHCP and DNS do not function on eth0 with kernel 2.6.15-26-k7 - works fine with 2.6.15-25-k7

2006-07-29 Thread Connell
Public bug reported:

System tested on:
AMD Athlon XP 2100+, 1GB DDS
 eth0: NForce2 Ethernet Controler
eth1: 3com 3C902B-EMB Integrated Fast Ethernet Controler [Tornado]

When I run 2.6.15-26-k7 on 6.06, my eth0 connection does not function corectly.
I am able to ping specific IP Addresses if set up with a Static IP Address,
but DNS does not resolve any addresses. Additionally if set up with DHCP I am
unable to obtain any IP Address. (eth1 works without problem).

When I run 2.6.15-25-k7 with the same exact settings eth0 works
flawlessly with both DHCP and Static IP.

2006-07-30 Thread Connell
Disabling IPv6 does help (I was able to boot with the 2.6.15-26-k7
kernel and use the internet with DNS working), but when I did an
'ifconfig eth0 down' followed by an 'ifconfig eth0 up' (or
/etc/init.d/networking stop followed by /etc/init.d/networking start)
again I can access the internet via IP Addresses, but have no DNS, and
am unable to obtain an IP via DHCP.

[Bug 112955] Re: vino (vnc) keyboard mapping problem

2007-10-25 Thread Connell
I had the same problem with the Final Stable release of Ubuntu 7.10,
using TightVNC Server. WSJ's trick noted above of typing US (displayed
as mb) in the Configuration Editor > desktop > gnome > peripherals >
keyboard > kbd Layout key worked great, but this seems more like a
bandage than a real fix. I upgraded from 7.04 to 7.10, and did not have

[Bug 173330] Conflicting tools to set resolution

2007-12-01 Thread Connell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

Resolution settings in the Screens and Graphics tool (displayconfig-gtk)
are ignored upon reboot (or restart of x) if there is a different
resoltuion set in the Screen Resolution tool (gnome-display-properties).

For simplicity of use, and to avoid headaches for less technologically
inclined users there should be 1 default tool to change resolutions. I
would recomend Leaving the Screens and Graphics tool (as it is more
powerful) and removing the Screen Resolution tool. Perhaps it could
just be hidden by default in the Gnome menu?

I like both tools, but having multiple places to change settings is not
good when they dont talk to each other, and can have conflicting
settings. If it were possible to keep both tools, but just have setting
changes automatically synchronize between the 2 that could work too.

[Bug 109643] system frequently locks up with white screen with black lines while nvidia restricted driver in use must hard boot system

2007-04-24 Thread Connell
Public bug reported:

Frequently while using Ubuntu 7.04 in Gnome with the NVidia Restricted
Driver enabled I get complete system lockups requiring a hard-reboot.
When this happens the screen becomes mostly white with a random
scrambled pattern of mostly-black lines. This happens even more
frequently if Beryl or Compiz are enabled, but I have had it happen many
times even when neither of these are running. There does not appear to
be any specific action that is causing this behavior. It happened once
while surfing in Firefox, once while setting up new accounts in gAIM,
once while installing packages with Automatix, etc. I have yet to have
this problem when I do not have the Nvidia restricted driver enabled,
however I have not spent a lot of time in the system without this
driver, as the usability of the system without graphic drivers is very
limited in my opinion.

This happens for me several times per week. The hardware seems pretty
stable when running other Operating systems (my testing in other OSes
with this equipment was pretty limited). The system is running very
cool, so no signs of overheating. There was some mention in the forums
of possible problems with Processor Stepping ("cool 'n' quiet mode"), I
haven't made a lot of changes to BIOS settings yet, so I cant
confirm/deny that this is related, but I have a suspicion that this is
more related to how the Kernel is interacting with the video drivers.

Hardware Profile:
Biostar Geforce 6100-m9 Motherboard (On-board Geforce 6100 video)
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Venice
1GB PC3200 Memory

(I have tried both the AMD64 and X86 versions of Ubuntu, and experience
the same problem in both environments)

Several complaints that seem to be related have been discussed in the forums
here:

[Bug 109649] The install dialog box is larger than the default resolution (800x600). Next button cannot be seen without removing toolbars.

2007-04-24 Thread Connell
Public bug reported:

When I boot the Ubuntu 7.04 Live/Install CD and choose the Install
option the install screen comes up larger than the size of the default
800x600 screen. The buttons (Cancel, Back, Next, etc) are not
visible/clickable. My work-around to this was to enable auto-hide for
both tool-bars and move the install screen to the very top of the
screen. Even then I was unable to read what the buttons said but could
at least click on the button that I guessed to be correct.

The install screen should be resizable. It would be nice if the default
size fit nicely in an 800x600 resolution without any resizing needed.
Perhaps scroll-bars would be needed, but this could really deter a new
user from installing the system.

[Bug 109643] Re: [nvidia-glx] system frequently locks up with white screen with black lines while nvidia restricted driver in use must hard boot system

2007-04-25 Thread Connell
I did disable the Cool 'n' quiet mode, and the system has not locked up
since ... I will continue to test. So at this point I am not certain if
this is related to the NVidia drivers, or not. I didn't have the
problem until I enabled the video driver, but perhaps that was a
coincidence, or perhaps running the nvidia driver was just enough of a
load on the processor to cause the CPU stepping. Maybe it was the
combination of the 3.

Either way it is looking like this issue may primarily be related to the
kernel. I would really like to be able to better determine the root
cause. If I can provide any further information please ask.

[Bug 293146] Re: Encrypted messages are not shown

2008-11-15 Thread Charles Connell
Hi, I'm one of the authors of the cryptography plugin.

I think I know what your problem is. I have been able to get a fresh
install of Kubuntu 8.10 working with these steps:

1 - ensure that the package gnupg-agent is installed
2 - in a terminal, run the command 'gpg'. Since this is probably the first time
you have run it, it will create the configuration files you need. Exit gpg with
Ctrl+C.
3 - Log out of KDE and log back in again.
4 - Run Kopete and try to send a signed message (or try to recieve an encrypted
message). It should prompt you for your password and then work correctly.

Please tell me if this works.
Thank you.

[Bug 293146] Re: Encrypted messages are not shown

2008-11-15 Thread Charles Connell
Ubuntu's gnupg-agent package comes with a script located at
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90gpg-agent
This script runs whenever an X session starts and it tries to start gpg-agent.
In a clean Kubuntu system, this appears to work correctly if the ~/.gnupg
directory is populated with the correct configuration files (which is *not* the
default situation). These config files are generated when gpg is run for the
first time, not until then.

The link you provided appears that it will get gpg-agent going when you
start your session, but in a very hackish way. It would be far easier to
just run gpg and then restart your X session.

[Bug 254006] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Recuerde - a simple list manager

2008-08-01 Thread Charles Connell
Public bug reported:

Me and a friend have written a list manager app in Python with
wxWidgets. The idea behind it is that it's not just a to-do list, but it
can be used to keep track of anything.

User can create any number of lists, and put any items in them. What
make Recuerde unique is that the user can define what fields items
should have in any given list. For example: One list is for groceries,
so this list will only have the item names. Another list is for
appointments, so that will have the item names, as well as a date
attached to each one.

This app is unique because of how it is written (I don't know of any
other app in ubuntu done in wxPython.) I haven't fulfilled some of the
usual requirements because they seem silly for a Python app. The source
code has an installer script in it that basically copies my python files
into /usr/lib/recuerde, a .desktop file into /usr/share/applications,
and an icon into /usr/share/icons. The package can just put those files
there.

I run Ubuntu myself, so I'm pretty sure it will work on it.

Recuerde depends on python 2.5 and wxPython 2.8 for python 2.5 (not sure
the exact ubuntu package names, but I can find out)

Thanks for looking at my app.

[Bug 341947] Re: right click mounted media shows 'copy disc' twice.

2009-03-12 Thread Lee Connell
I meant how do I tell launchpad when I submit my bug, what OS version I
am referring too. I could happen to be talking about intrepid or an
earlier version.

When did nautlius-cd-burner not ship by default, which alpha? I
installed jaunty from an early alpha 1 or 2 and have just been updating.

Also odd I do a search for my bug earlier from ubuntu project in
launchpad and it does not show my newly reported bug only my old ones. I
had to use the link in my email to follow this bug. Am I missing
something?

[Bug 350051] [NEW] evolution status bar is really big

2009-03-27 Thread Lee Connell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Why is Evolution's status bar so big and bulky? It looks out of place
and wrong, I see it has the capability for a user to cancel some kind of
event, but this could be equally useful in a smaller/normal size status
bar, this just looks really odd.

[Bug 350051] Re: evolution status bar is really big

2009-03-28 Thread Lee Connell
Hi Sebastien, I've attached another screenshot, it really is only a
cosmetic thing, I don't ever recall evolution's status bar being so big
and bulky looking.

Also please! tell me how do I list bugs that I have created? I login to
launchpad.net I've tried going to bugs, going to my profile and I cannot
find anywhere how to access bugs that I have reported.

if I type in manually http://bugs.launchpad.net/~lee-a-connell it shows
me my bugs, but if I didn't know that URL, how am I suppose to navigate
to my open bugs?

[Bug 350051] Re: evolution status bar is really big

2009-03-28 Thread Lee Connell
Actually, I have two very important questions which are extremely
aggravating when trying to help ubuntu by reporting bugs.

launchpad: how do you report a bug and tell it what version of the software you
are reporting against?
launchpad: how do you view all bugs you reported or are watching?
launchpad: how do you search bugs on a specific software 'version'?
launchpad: when i do report a bug, why can't i add my tags in the initial
report? I have to go back into the bug and edit the tags.

Sorry for my ranting and this is suppose to be about this particular
evolution bug, but it's frustrating.

[Bug 68729] Re: Loses all backups when disk is full

2009-03-28 Thread Lee Connell
Every sys admin should be monitoring their own disk space and get alerts
for it, but unfortunately the damage has already been done once you get
an alert. An end user could potentially save a 10GB file in their
personal folder and backuppc will grab that file which could potentially
put you over the estimated disk space you had originally setup for the
backup.

Public bug reported:

If you right click on the desktop, "Create new folder" icon looks to be

'.gtkrc-2.0' modifiction:
gtk-icon-sizes="panel-menu=24,24:gtk-menu=16,16:gtk-button=16,16:gtk-small-toolbar=16,16:gtk-large-toolbar=24,24:gtk-dialog=24,24:gtk-dnd=24,24

[Bug 1273462] [NEW] Upstart job config and init.d script are incompatible with each other

2014-01-27 Thread Eric Connell
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 13.10
Release:13.10

mysql-server-5.5:
  Installed: 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1
  Candidate: 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1
  Version table:
 *** 5.5.35-0ubuntu0.13.10.1 0

 5.5.32-0ubuntu7 0
500 http://us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/main amd64
Packages

In Ubuntu 13.10, the Upstart job and the init.d script do not work properly.
In previous versions, the init.d script was a symlink to the wrapper script
around upstart (/lib/init/upstart-job). This conflict means that if the server
was started using the init.d script, upstart does not recognize that the server
is running and will attempt to start a second instance of mysqld.

Also problematic is that if the upstart job is started using the service
or start commands, the init.d script's "stop" function runs a mysql
shutdown, but upstart simply restarts mysqld (because it's marked
respawn in the upstart config).

** Affects: mysql-5.5 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 659872] Re: Aliases in /etc/hosts overwritten

Well clearly It's a bug and it's a nuisance, so why not fix it?

Why is the network manager rewriting this file all of a sudden?
