Regression caused by foomatic-filters 4.0.0-0ubuntu0.1 from intrepid-
proposed, causes all printing to fail on my system, reverting to
4.0.0~bzr177-0ubuntu1 from intrepid restores functionality.

Error log is attached.

[Bug 321164] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 has a problem with Laser Printer HL-1435

2009-01-29 Thread Carey Underwood
For the sake of searching: this also affects 8.10 with -proposed;
Brother HL-2030, HL-2040 printers.

* Reinstalled the update to test (4.0.0-0ubuntu0.1)
* Reapplied the default settings as described above, printing on that driver
now works.
* PPD of the -debug copy is attached.

[Bug 388189] [NEW] When printing 6 sheets per page, the selected layout is not respected.

2009-06-16 Thread Carey Underwood
Public bug reported:

When printing any document using 6 pages per side (under the page setup
tab), the selected page ordering is ignored.

The default page ordering shows as left-to-right,top-to-bottom, with a
diagram:

123
456

But what actually previews or prints is:

246
135

That layout doesn't change, regardless of the selected ordering.

** Description changed:

Xorg returns, compiz seems to be running okay.

A few moments later, the box locks up.
   * Machine can be ping'ed remotely over wireless link
   * Cannot log in via ssh
   * REISUB resets the machine
   * On reset, a full ext4 fsck is forced and errors are found and corrected
(e.g. "Deleted inode 2981923 has zero dtime. FIXED."), and the machine is
reset again.

- Seems to be working fine under "vesa"
+ Under mainline 2.6.30-rc{5,6,7}, it stays up longer (up to several
+ hours), at which point it seems that processes that touch the disk start

[Bug 382884] [NEW] [KMS] [GM945]: Xorg hang after resume from suspend

2009-06-02 Thread Carey Underwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

With xorg-edgers and 2.6.30-rc7 from the mainline kernel, enabling KMS

I have the output of intel_gpu_dump attached.

As far as I can tell, this is the same as bug #381659, but I'm attaching
this to a separate report as preferred by upstream.

[Bug 382884] Re: [KMS] [GM945]: Xorg hang after resume from suspend

2009-06-02 Thread Carey Underwood
After running intel_gpu_dump after resuming, I switch vt's back to X,
and experienced the same symptoms (locked up, touchpad could move mouse
cursor, external mouse could not, system not responsive to vt changing,
could still ssh into it, sysrq's were responded to).

loannis, just install a 2.6.30 kernel. I've been running an rc of 2.6.30 on
jaunty for months now with nvidia, works fine. DKMS will take care of the
restricted modules as necessary.

[Bug 380775] [NEW] [karmic] Evolution's prompt to unlock default keyring can't be cancelled or denied

2009-05-26 Thread Carey Underwood
Public bug reported:

I clicked on an email link by accident, which resulted in evolution
opening up and prompting for the password for the default keyring.

However, when clicking close or deny, it just pops up again a second
later, over and over.

This is a bad thing :p

Expected behaviour: evolution would give up whatever it was trying to
do, possibly with an error (although since I already closed the compose
window that opened, it would be preferable if it just found a quiet
corner to crawl into and die rather than gasping an error message at me
with its last breath).

[Bug 380807] [NEW] [karmic, intel] Laptop locks up moments after resuming from suspend

2009-05-26 Thread Carey Underwood

Xorg returns, compiz seems to be running okay.

A few moments later, the box locks up.

[Bug 370281] [NEW] [jaunty, dbus, upgrade] clock applet fails to set timezone if /etc/timezone doesn't exist

2009-05-01 Thread Carey Underwood
Public bug reported:

If /etc/timezone doesn't exist (it's not created on upgrade, for
instance), adding a location and setting it to the default via the 'set'
button silently fails. The applet's weather indicator (for instance)
shows the correct weather until logging back in, at which point the
location is reset (seemingly to nothing).

Running dpkg-reconfigure tz-data recreates the file, at which point the
calendar applet immediately works properly, and can set the machine
timezone.

System sometimes lock and freeze whole inputs even keyboard or mouse.
I have closed X and kdm and try to reprocedure same bug in console ( not

And try to compile qt-copy in one console and try to svn up on KDE and on

i tryto apt-get updateto make system under CPU load. and after a while it
happens again.

No Keyboard response no harddisc response total freeze.

I have waited a while after freeze and about 4 min later a text appeared
  on screen saying :

after waiting about 4 more minutes a newer but same text appeared unter

BUG: soft locking - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [uic: 5356]

There isn't any error records on /etc/log/messages releated on hardware while
around freezing/locking times

And for information : Sometimes i have seen that i'm getting messages like
disc is full but
I'm sure that it isn't. Because df shows me there are more than 7 Gb
freespace. Not always getting this error.
if a file shows this error while i'm updating it i'm deleting it and
downloading a bigger file system won't interrupts me
like saying disk is full. I think it is releated to Ext4.

But i'm not sure these 2 bugs releated or not.

@Theo

That was easy :p

I've got a 2.5GB ext4 image which reproduced the issue when mounted on
/mnt/test. Attached is the e2image output produced immediately before
deleting the files. The hang itself occurred part way into writing
the files during the next cycle (as it usually does).

[Bug 364023] [NEW] Applications are restarted at launch even though "Automatically remember running applications when logging out" is disabled

2009-04-20 Thread Carey Underwood
Public bug reported:

Disabling "Automatically remember running applications when logging out"
in the Startup Applications Preferences window doesn't disable
application that were previously remembered. Gedit, gnome-terminal and
firefox still fire up automatically even after several reboots/relogs.

Those applications are not listed in startup programs/

A clean logout seems to be required in order to prevent those
applications from auto-launching, however, in many desktop situations a
proper log-out may be very rare, far outnumbered by kernel hangs (in my
case, due to known issues with ext4), or physical issues (power outages,
etc).

[Bug 367698] [NEW] Gimp's color selection resets when the point leaves and returns to the window after using wacom tablet.

2009-04-26 Thread Carey Underwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

Gimp seems to be keeping track of the palette state separately between
the mouse and the stylus. The palette state switches to one set of
settings as the mouse cursor leaves and re-enters the gimp window, and
then switches back to another as the stylus touches the screen surface.
This is disruptive, as the gimp palette is on a second screen that isn't
accessible to the stylus.

[Bug 319818] Re: dbus-send...suspend doesn't work while X is running (breaks suspend/hibernate from menu)

2009-02-01 Thread Carey Underwood
hyperair, sorry, I should have updated this earlier:

I added some instrumentation to /usr/sbin/pm-suspend, it turns out that
it _is_ being executed when dbus-send or g-p-m's suspend is issued, but
failing with some inhibit that doesn't seem to cause issues when pm-
suspend is run by hand.

I commented out the inhibit check, and suspend worked properly. But
when I enabled the check again, suspend _still_ worked properly: some
state changed somewhere, but I never did figure out which hook it was in
particular.

Given that I can no longer reproduce it, unless any of you have some
idea of what to check, I'm setting this to invalid.

commit a7f014f2de04893f95cfe40fe35f15c8dae4b36e
Author: Eric Anholt
Date: Tue Nov 25 14:02:05 2008 -0800

drm/i915: Respect GM965/GM45 bit-17-instead-of-bit-11 option for
swizzling.

This fixes readpixels and buffer corruption when swapped out and in by
disabling tiling on them.

Now that we know that the bit 17 mode isn't just a mistake of older
chipsets,
we'll need to work on a clever fix so that we can get the performance of
tiling on these chipsets, but that will require intrusive changes targeted
at the next kernel release, not this one.

Noted a patch above the above one, that disabled gem when pae is enabled
due to some interaction. Our -server kernel has pae enabled. This
suggests a workaround...

And having installed the -server kernel (2.6.27-4-server), I can confirm
that it works around this issue.

Kevin, can you install linux-server (and possibly linux-restricted-
modules-2.6-28-4-server if you need them for other hardware), reboot
into it, and test?

[Bug 307306] Re: upgrade to 2:1.2.99.2-0ubuntu1 makes session utterly slow

2009-01-22 Thread Carey Underwood
Just started happening to me a couple days after I upgraded to jaunty,
didn't seem to be any updates that triggered it.

Consistently occurred for 3 reboots, going away when I switched to vesa,
and coming back when switching back to intel, and then mysteriously
disappeared again just as I was switching back into intel to try the
gnome-settings-daemon workaround.

[Bug 303011] Re: [i945] 2.5.1 driver poor performance

2009-01-22 Thread Carey Underwood
Hah, right. You're on 64 bit, and therefore don't have pae on the
server kernel, and therefore don't have gem disabled due to pae being
enabled, and therefore still have the issue.

Re: [Bug 317781] Re: Ext4 data loss

2009-03-12 Thread Carey Underwood
Theo, does that then imply that setting the writeback time to the
journal commit time (5 seconds) would also largely eliminate the
unpopular behavior?

How much of the benefit of delayed allocation do we lose by waiting a
couple seconds rather than minutes or tens of seconds? Any large
write could easily be happening over a longer period than any
reasonable writeback time, and so those cases should already be
allocating their eventual size immediately (think torrents or a long
running file copy).

[Bug 241115] Re: uswsusp v0.8

2009-03-15 Thread Carey Underwood
Debian's 0.8-1.1 installs and work fine however.

I have suspicions that the usplash patch isn't good, but I don't know
that for a fact.
