[Bug 574079] [NEW] kpackagekit crashes on system-updates refresh after install
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kpackagekit After a new install of 10.04 (without an internet connection because I depend on wireless for this machine) from a CD, after getting the wireless working, I entered kpackagekit to get the available updates. It showed none, so I clicked on refresh. After just about all of the steps involved in refreshing, I got an error indication, saying: "A problem that we were not expecting has occurred. Please report this bug with the error description." The details were as follows: Error Type: Error Value: coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, exceptions.SystemError found File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt/aptBackend.py, line 2216, in main() File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt/aptBackend.py, line 2213, in main run(args, options.single) File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt/aptBackend.py, line 2175, in run backend.dispatcher(args) File : /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/packagekit/backend.py, line 699, in dispatcher self.dispatch_command(args[0], args[1:]) File : /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/packagekit/backend.py, line 606, in dispatch_command self.refresh_cache(force) File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt/aptBackend.py, line 202, in _locked_cache func(*args, **kwargs) File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt/aptBackend.py, line 1498, in refresh_cache format_string(error.message)) File : /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/packagekit/backend.py, line 723, in format_string txt = unicode(text, encoding, errors='replace') I fear I am out of luck with this problem, because even if it can be fixed, I cannot get any system updates, so it will not get fixed for me. - Aere Greenway ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: kpackagekit 0.5.4-0ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-21-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Sun May 2 17:32:15 2010 InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100427) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: kpackagekit ** Affects: kpackagekit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 lucid -- kpackagekit crashes on system-updates refresh after install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574079 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 574079] Re: kpackagekit crashes on system-updates refresh after install
I think I figured out the problem. Without the internet connected during installation, language packs didn't get installed. The details of the error might have been from trying to reference a language-dependent string. I repeated the installation with the internet connected. I did this by using the live CD version, and configuring my wireless to get it working. Then I clicked on the install icon. After installing the system with the internet connected, and again refreshing the system updates, this time it worked, and there was no error. -- kpackagekit crashes on system-updates refresh after install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574079 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 574079] Re: kpackagekit crashes on system-updates refresh after install
I do not know for sure, but my speculation is that they need to install more than will fit on a CD. To solve that (I speculate), they leave off the language packs, then toward the end of the install (knowing which ones are needed), they download just what is needed over the internet (which takes 10 to 15 minutes at my lower-speed DSL). By leaving the language packs off the installation CD, they save a lot of space. Thanks for the tip on apt-get. However, I successfully worked-around the problem by re-installing with the internet connected. - Aere -- kpackagekit crashes on system-updates refresh after install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574079 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1799580] [NEW] Settings made by qasmixer are lost on next reboot
Public bug reported: I use qasmixer to set the "Synth" volume to full, on my SoundBlaster Live sound-card. On prior levels of Ubuntu (through 18.04), any settings I make are preserved over reboots. On the latest level of Ubuntu (18.10) the settings are effective only as long as the system is running. The next time I reboot, the settings are gone, and I have to use qasmixer to set them all over again. [Bug 1804134] [NEW] LibreOffice Writer Won't Run on Pentium-4 32-bit Computer
Public bug reported: On a Dell GX-270 (Intel 32-bit) computer running Lubuntu 18.04, I can run LibreOffice, but when I select LibreOffice Writer the LibreOffice window disappears, and nothing happens, as if the application just terminated normally, without doing anything. An AppPort window reporting an error appeared, but when I clicked its "Send" button, the window disappeared without doing anything. If I run LibreOffice Writer directly from the menu, I get a frame of its window (with nothing filled-in inside), which persists for awhile, and then disappears. In either case, no error message appears, and nothing further happens. LibreOffice Calc, on the other hand, appears to run, though I haven't tried any spreadsheet using it. I expected LibreOffice Writer to initialize, and then use it for editing documents (as it did on Lubuntu 16.04), but the LibreOffice Writer window disappeared. [Bug 1769405] Re: In GTK+ Look-And-Feel, Slider Controls Have No Visible Handle
The first screenshot (using the "-Djdk.gtk.version=2" option) shows the application screen the way it should appear. The slider controls (in the right pane) all have a handle which can be 'grabbed' by the mouse, and dragged. The second screenshot (without the above option), shows the same screen, with the problem clearly evident. None of the slider controls (in the right pane) have a 'handle' visible (which could be dragged using a mouse). Yet if you click and drag in the slider control where the handle should be visible, it behaves as if a visible handle were there. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1769405 Title: In GTK+ Look-And-Feel, Slider Controls Have No Visible Handle To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-lts/+bug/1769405/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1755640] [NEW] Pitch-Bend Control Wrong On Java MIDI Interface
Public bug reported: When using a Java MIDI interface to connect a MIDI keyboard to either the Java Sound Synthesizer, or to an external MIDI synthesizer (via a hardware MIDI interface), the pitch-bend MIDI message is two half-steps (one note) low (out-of-tune). It appears that the data1 (least-significant byte), and data2 (most- significant byte) values are interpreted as a signed 14-bit number (whose mid-point is 0), rather than an unsigned 14-bit number whose mid- point is X'00', X'40' = X'0200', as specified in the MIDI spec. This results in all further notes played being a whole-step too low, and the pitch-bend values within the range of the MIDI keyboard not being a smooth progression from low to high. Here is information from the MIDI trace: Input IDLE. Input ACTIVE. Forwarded MIDI = E0, 00, 40 (this message generated by the code to compensate for being out-of-tune) Received MIDI = E0, 00, 00 Received MIDI-message: E0 Received MIDI = E0, 00, 01 (should have been E0, 00, 41) Input ACTIVE. Received MIDI = 90, 3C, 00 Received MIDI-message: 90 Input ACTIVE. Received MIDI = 90, 3C, 53 Received MIDI-message: 90 Input IDLE. Input ACTIVE. This is different from how it works on Oracle Java 8, where the value for 'no pitch-bend' shows up as E0, 00, 40. It is possible to send the proper pitch-bend values from a Java- implemented MIDI transmitter, but received pitch-bend values (coming in on an input MIDI interface) get transformed to an improper value. This problem has probably been in-existence from the first release of open Java. I tested on an old system having Open Java 7, and the problem was there too. Until I created 'wrapper code' for the Java Sound (Gervill) Synthesizer, I had no way to test this functionality. My expectation is that Open Java will handle pitch-bend messages the same way as Oracle Java does. I am using Lubuntu 17.10, but the problem also occurs on Lubuntu 16.04.4. [Bug 1755640] Re: Pitch-Bend Control Wrong On Java MIDI Interface
The attached JAR-file has online help (click the Help button) to explain how to use it. Unfortunately, Java cannot 'see' ALSA MIDI devices, so you have to use a hardware MIDI interface (such as a USB MIDI keyboard). The code to compensate for the out-of-tune pitch-bend makes things worse, but you can see everything coming in from the MIDI keyboard traced (printed on the terminal). [Bug 1888967] [NEW] Lubuntu Lubuntu 18.04 won't boot after applying updates on a 32-bit machine
Public bug reported: On a Dell Optiplex-gx260 computer, after applying updates, installing linux-image-4.15.0-112-generic, when restarting, the system doesn't boot, and instead ends up in 'rescue mode' (whatever that is). I'm reporting this on another Dell Optiplex machine (32-bit), because although the machine having the problem booted on the older kernel (4.15.0-109-generic), it would not stay alive long enough to report the problem. This machine (fortunately) is still using the 4.15.0-100-generic kernel, so it stays alive long enough to report the problem. I expected the machine to reboot after applying updates. Instead, it ended-up in a text-screen, saying it is in 'rescue mode'. I also attempted to do a fresh install of the latest Lubuntu 18.04 on a different Dell Optiplex GX-260 machine, and it also ended up in a text screen in 'rescue mode'. [Bug 1833018] [NEW] After Installing Updates, system fails to boot on first try
Public bug reported: I installed Lubuntu 18.04 LTS on an i386 machine (Dell GX-270). After installation, it rebooted with no problems. I installed all updates, and on rebooting it failed to boot. The screen had unreadable graphics in the top third of it. On rebooting again, it booted okay, saying it recovered the journal. Sometimes, it takes 3 tries to get it to boot. Often, it gets most of the way into the boot process, then suddenly goes into the GRUB menu. I installed this system because my primary partition on the same machine started failing to boot much of the time. This failure started happening after applying updates. I was thinking something in the system files might be corrupted. But the newly-installed system has the same symptoms. After applying updates, I expected the system to boot successfully every time. Instead, it always crashes during the boot, or hangs, on the first try to boot. On the 2nd or 3rd try, it will boot. [Bug 1833018] Re: After Installing Updates, system fails to boot on first try
When I boot, but specify the other partition (also Lubuntu 18.04.2) - the one that originally started having the boot problems - it boots successfully. When I boot, but specify the originally-installed kernel (linux- image-4.15.0-20-generic), it also boots successfully. Sometimes, on the boots that fail, it just hangs, and I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. It appears, that after initially powering on, and just booting from the first GRUB menu entry, it always fails in some manner the first time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1833018 Title: After Installing Updates, system fails to boot on first try To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1833018/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm quite sure I did it right this time. I assume the text I add (after a space at the end of the command) is: nopti I hit F10 to boot with the command applied (an alternative to cntrl-x). I needed that alternative because GRUB dumps you in qwerty layout, and I DO NOT use qwerty. With the parameter applied, it crashed (on the initial try). So I don't think the nopti parameter makes any difference. [Bug 1682701] [NEW] Fails To Connect To WPA2 WiFi
Public bug reported: The task-bar applet showing network connection will not connect to the DSL modem wireless, as it used to do in prior releases. I tried three different wireless dongles, all with the same result. I'm running the live 17.04 system, and I tried it on three different machines as well. Other than the machine I submitted the bug report on (which also has ethernet connectivity), all of my other machines depend on wireless, so 17.04 is not usable. [Bug 1306235] Re: gdebi fails to install dependencies on Lubuntu 14.04
I thought perhaps some errors in the package might have caused this problem (though the same package worked on 13.10), so I analyzed the package using lintian. That did show some errors (not just warnings). In looking at the errors, I solved the problem by re-building the package using fakeroot. After doing that, the lintian output indicates only 5 warnings (and no errors). I retried the test on 14.04, installing the fixed package using gdebi (acting on a downloaded file from Firefox), but it still encounters the same error (won't load dependencies). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1306235 Title: gdebi fails to install dependencies on Lubuntu 14.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdebi/+bug/1306235/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The problem occurs on a Lubuntu 14.04 test machine (not the machine I'm sending this e-mail from, which is Lubuntu 13.10). The problem only occurs on 14.04. But from the testing I've done already, I'm almost certain that it will not fail if I type the statement you indicate in a terminal session. In my testing, if I did a statement invoking gdebi in a terminal session, it worked without failing. But the question comes to mind, did I do "sudo gdebi problem-package.deb" or did I do "gdebi problem-package.deb" (answering the dialog requesting priveleges)? I suspect I did the "sudo" version. I will give it a try and report back. As I recall, it didn't fail when run from a terminal session. It only failed when I clicked-on (in Firefox, on my website), the hyperlink referencing the package.deb file, and selected the option to open it with gdebi. It seems like it also failed when (in the file browser) I double-clicked on the package.deb file downloaded previously. I already attached the package file to the bug-report. [Bug 1611180] [NEW] JPanel XOR Graphics Is Wrong Color After Scrolling A Combo-Box
Public bug reported: Normally, XOR graphics in a JPanel works fine (and is the right color). But if you open (expand) a combo-box, and scroll it, then select the item that was formerly selected, the next time you do XOR graphics in an adjacent JPanel, the color is wrong. In this particular case, the color being XOR'ed is pure blue (0,0,255), but instead of blue, it appears on the screen as yellow. The graphics area background is white (255,255,255). I expected the color of the XOR'ed note-head ellipse to be blue (as it was in openjdk-7), but it was instead yellow, but it only happens after scrolling a combo-box in an adjacent panel. This problem appeared when Open Java 8 became the default JRE in Ubuntu. It happens in most (probably all) Ubuntu variants. aere@Aere-Dell-Inspiron:~$ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Release:16.04 Installed version: 8u91-b14-0ubuntu4~16.04.1 I will attach the source code of part of the application that does the XOR graphics, and in that file, the following method does the XOR graphics: public void markNote(int keyOffset) I will also attach a Debian package which will allow you to install a 30-day free-trial version of the KeyMusician Keyboard application, which will allow you to reproduce the problem. To reproduce the problem: 1. Run the KeyMusician Keyboard application (you can use the default, pre-loaded soundfont of the Java Sound (Gervill) synthesizer). 2. When the music-staff is displayed, type some letter keys (or click with the mouse in the musical staff graphics display area. You should see round filled dots appear, whose color is blue. This is the expected behavior. 3. Click on the combo-box above the "ASSIGNABLE" slider, which opens the combo-box. Then use its scroll-bar to scroll it all the way to the bottom, and back to the top. Then re-select what was already selected ("modulation", in the default Linux configuration). 4. Type some letter-keys (or click in the musical staff graphics area). This time, the filled-circles (the note-heads) will be yellow. They will remain yellow, even if you iconify & restore the application window, or click on other tabbed panels (for the different function keys. The method doing the XOR graphics is the following: public void markNote(int keyOffset) { System.out.println("(un)markNote(" + keyOffset + ")" + "external=" + isExternalNote) ; if (!isSetup && keyOffset >= 0 && keyOffset < NUM_KEYS) { dim = getSize() ; height = dim.getHeight() ; width = dim.getWidth() ; commonSetup() ; double markHeight = keyWidth ; double markWidth = keyWidth * 1.25 ; double y = height - (keyOffset + 1) * keyWidth ; double x = shortLineStart + (shortLineLength / 2) - (markWidth / 2) ; System.out.println("markNote " + x + "," + y) ; System.out.println("BG=" + g2.getBackground() + ", FG=" + g2.getPaint() + ", newBG=" + backGround + ", newFG=" + foreGround) ; // TEMPORARY g2.setXORMode(backGround) ; g2.setColor(foreGround) ; if (isExternalNote) { g2.setPaint(KEY_MARK_COLOR_EXTERNAL) ; } else { //g2.setPaint(KEY_MARK_COLOR) ; g2.setPaint(Color.BLUE) ; } Ellipse2D.Double mark = new Ellipse2D.Double(x, y, markWidth, markHeight) ; g2.fill(mark) ; System.out.println("Color=" + g2.getPaint()) ; // TEMPORARY g2.setPaintMode() ; } } ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: openjdk-8-jre 8u91-b14-0ubuntu4~16.04.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-31.50-generic 4.4.13 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-31-generic i686 ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.1 Architecture: i386 CurrentDesktop: LXDE Date: Mon Aug 8 19:45:42 2016 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-05-18 (1178 days ago) InstallationMedia: Lubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" - Release i386 (20130423.1) SourcePackage: openjdk-8 UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to xenial on 2016-07-22 (18 days ago) ** Affects: openjdk-8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 xenial ** Attachment added: "Debian package to install a 30-day free-trial version of the KeyMusician Keyboard" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1611180/+attachment/4717130/+files/keymusician-keyboard_1.23_all.deb -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1611180 Title: JPanel XOR Graphics Is Wrong Color After Scrolling A Combo-Box To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-8/+bug/1611180/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1611180] Re: JPanel XOR Graphics Is Wrong Color After Scrolling A Combo-Box
On the surface, this error report may appear quite bizarre, but I have spent a lot of time narrowing-down the conditions that trigger the problem. Since Ubuntu 16.04 came out in April, I have been seeing the yellow notes, but have been unable to identify what triggered them. I finally spent a lot of time trying to narrow down the trigger, and this is what I have come up with. A few additional points may be useful to consider: 1. You have to actually scroll the combo-box. If you just expand the combo-box, and select anything within the range displayed, the problem does not occur. 2. Even if you scroll a combo-box in another pane (such as the "F1 Help / Setup" pane's "Configuration Files" combo-box), it will affect all the other tabbed-panes. 3. Although the "Instrument" combo-box being scrolled will trigger the problem on many machines, it would not trigger the problem on all of my test machines. Only the "ASSIGNABLE" slider's combo-box (and the "Configuration Files" combo-box on the "F1" pane) will trigger the problem on all of my test machines. 4. Although the "ASSIGNABLE" slider's combo-box has both an Action- Performed and State-Change listener, the only action taken by those listeners is to log the event using System.out.println(). The configuration files combo-box, on the other hand, has a lot of side- effects. 5. It may seem far-fetched that a component in a separate panel can affect the graphics in an adjacent panel, but I can point out cases you can reproduce (bugs I have been living with for a long time without reporting) where this is definitely the case. For instance, if you hit a key to produce a note immediately to the left of one of sliders (holding it down so the dot remains displayed), and while doing so, manipulate the slider to the right of the note using the mouse, the note-dot gets erased, even though the key producing the note is left down (and the note's sound continues audibly). This problem has been observed in openjdk-7, and on Oracle Java as well. I can submit a problem report for that if you wish. I will attached a text-file containing the System.out.println() entries in the area where the problem occurred. I did not observe anything out of the ordinary for cases with the yellow notes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1611180 Title: JPanel XOR Graphics Is Wrong Color After Scrolling A Combo-Box To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-8/+bug/1611180/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1574879] [NEW] Java Desktop.browse not supported on Kubuntu 16.04
Public bug reported: The Desktop.browse functionality of Java is not supported on the Kubuntu 16.04 level of the KDE desktop. It was supported in earlier levels. With this support no longer available, a Java application can no longer activate the system's browser to display the already-installed HTML help files for the application, making the context-sensitive help functionality useless. Here is the Java code snippet where the code attempts to activate the online help: if (Desktop.isDesktopSupported()) { Desktop desktop = Desktop.getDesktop() ; if (desktop.isSupported(Desktop.Action.BROWSE)) { try { desktop.browse(new URI(url)) ; } catch (Exception e) { String error = "Problem creating URI to access documentation:\n" + e.getMessage() ; reportError(error, true) ; } } else reportError("Desktop.browse not supported on this system.", true) ; } When this code is executed, the "Desktop.browse not supported on this system." error message is displayed, rather than activating the user's Internet browser to display the HTML help file already installed in the user's file-system. In prior releases of Kubuntu, this has always worked. I expected it to work on 16.04 (as it does on the other 'flavors' of Ubuntu 16.04), but it is not supported in the KDE desktop of Kubuntu 16.04 I am using Kubuntu 16.04. In prior releases of Kubuntu, the online help information was displayed using the system's Internet browser, which was what I expected to happen. In this release, I instead got the "Desktop.browse not supported on this system." error message, and the Internet browser was not activated to display the already-installed (via Debian package) help information. [Bug 1574889] [NEW] gnome-software will not install a package with un-met dependencies
Public bug reported: gnome-software (Software Install) fails to resolve un-met dependencies (installing them) when installing a Debian package. In prior releases, Ubuntu Software Center (and Gdebi) would do this. In the 16.04, when you click the "Install" button, it re-displays (as with other installation cases), but when you again click the "Install" button, it appears to hang, with the system apparently doing nothing, and no progress indicator of any type visible. In 16.04, the Gdebi Package Installer still does successfully install the dependencies, and install the package. After installing the dependencies (using Gdebi) Software Install (gnome- software) would then successfully install the package, so it appears to be a problem with installing the dependencies. The release I am using here is Ubuntu-Gnome 16.04, but the problem was also observed on all other Ubuntu 'flavors' using gnome-software as the installer. The version of the package gnome-software is: 3.20.1+git20160420.1.ca63436.ubuntu-xenial-0ubuntu2 I expected it to install the dependencies, and then install the package (as Ubuntu Software Center used to do). What happened instead, is it appeared to hang, with the system doing nothing (I waited a few minutes, and didn't see the DSL modem flashing, and nothing further happened). I eventually gave up, and installed the package using gdebi. After doing that (and the dependencies were installed), gnome-software would successfully install the package it wouldn't install before. I have attached one of the Debian packages I was trying to install (which Gdebi successfully installed). From my work with the application I developed (the KeyMusician Keyboard), and its Debian package), as of the Ubuntu 15.10 release, only required dependencies are now installed. Before then, "Recommends" dependencies were installed, which I wish it still did. To overcome this change, I had to create some dummy packages that included the "Recommends" dependencies as required dependencies of the dummy package. I also created a dummy package that had the "Recommends" and "Suggests" packages as required dependencies, and the user had to install one or the other of those additional dummy packages. I don't know why that changed in Ubuntu 15.10 - perhaps it has something to do with the snappy package support. -- Sincerely, Aere -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1574879 Title: Java Desktop.browse not supported on Kubuntu 16.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-8/+bug/1574879/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It showed it to be already installed. When I saw this problem in testing, I assumed it to be the decision of people responsible for the KDE desktop, to not allow a Java application to activate the system's Internet browser. So I would assume it is something configured somewhere for the KDE desktop. I was unsure of what package to file the bug with. If this problem was a deliberate decision, I wanted it to be known what side-effects that decision has on legitimate applications. Re: [Openjdk] [Bug 1574879] Re: Java Desktop.browse not supported on Kubuntu 16.04
Tiago: I checked the apt configuration (as you requested) on two Ubuntu 16.04 systems (Ubuntu-Gnome, and Kubuntu). It showed: APT::Install-Recommends "true"; I also checked the apt configuration on an Ubuntu 15.10 system (Ubuntu-MATE), and it showed: APT::Install-Recommends "1"; All of these systems are test systems, installed from a live DVD (or USB) desktop. There is no custom configuration of APT. One thing to note, however, is that the installations where "Recommends" dependencies stopped taking place as of Ubuntu 15.10 (and continuing with Ubuntu 16.04) were done using either the Gdebi Package Installer, or Ubuntu Software Center. Since my application (installed as a Debian package) is not in the repository, it has to be installed that way. So perhaps they changed Gdebi and Ubuntu Software Center to no longer install "Recommends" dependencies. The newer Gnome Software installer (in Ubuntu 16.04) doesn't yet succeed in installing external Debian packages. - Aere On 04/26/2016 09:44 AM, Tiago Stürmer Daitx wrote: > Please check your apt configuration by running: > > $ apt-config dump | grep Recommends > APT::Install-Recommends "1"; > > "1" indicates that recommends is activated and they should be > installed by default. [Bug 1637917] Re: rosegarden 16.06 plays only first note, locks up PC when trying to use HR timer
I tested Rosegarden on Ubuntu, UbuntuGnome, Kubuntu, UbuntuMATE, Lubuntu, and UbuntuStudio. [Bug 1338016] [NEW] Laptop headphones stopped working after updating system
Public bug reported: When I applied updates installing linux-image-3.2.0-65-generic, the laptop headphones (sound system) stopped working. When I pull out the sound-system plug, sound works through the (pathetic) laptop speakers. Sound is at a reasonable level, and is not muted. When I reboot with the former system linux-image-3.2.0-61-generic, sound works through the speaker system as it always did before. I am using an Acer Aspire 4339, running Ubuntu (Unity) 12.04. I expected sound (audio) to continue working through my sound system after applying system updates, but it didn't. The only way to get any sound is to use the laptop speakers. Re: [Bug 1338016] Re: Laptop headphones stopped working after updating system
Christopher: I discovered an acceptable work-around for the problem. Every time I boot the latest 12.04 LTS system (3.2.0-65) from a power-off state, sound works fine through the amplifier. Every time I boot the latest 12.04 LTS system via a reboot, sound only works through the laptop speakers. I tried this many times, and every time it works this way. So the work-around is when you need to use the 12.04 LTS system, always boot it from a power-off state. Further testing showed that the earlier level of the kernel I had (3.2.0-61) has no problem with playing audio through the amplifier, regardless whether I booted it from a power-off state, or via rebooting. Regarding updating the BIOS: In reading the complex instructions, I noticed the following warning: *WARNING: Flashing motherboard BIOS is a dangerous activity that can render your motherboard inoperable! While the author of this article has successfully run this procedure many times, your mileage may vary. Be careful!* I use this machine for testing a number of OS's - including Windows 7. It is also a machine I use in performing music. Any risk of losing this machine altogether is not a risk I want to take. I have no problems with sound using UbuntuStudio 14.04 in another partition of this machine. It doesn't matter if I reboot, or boot from a power-off state - it works every time. I tried the Ubuntu 14.04 Live CD on the machine, and audio works on it with no problems. Of course, with the live CD, it was from a power-off state. But UbuntuStudio 14.04 had no problems with audio, so probably Ubuntu Unity will work as well. So for any testing I need to do on Ubuntu 12.04 on this machine, I will boot from a power-off state, which ends up with no problems with audio using the amplifier. When Ubuntu 12.04 is no longer supported (and I no longer need an Ubuntu 12.04 test system), I will just install Ubuntu 14.04. I was not aware of any BIOS changes being available. I looked at the first link, and updated my sound card driver (in Windows 7), but that will not change anything in Linux. On Windows 7, I looked under the BIOS section of the web-page for my machine, but it only suggested downloading changes for the trackpad (and two other non-audio devices). I did not see anything for updating the BIOS as a whole. I was not aware that by reporting a problem without first having done the risky procedure of updating the BIOS, I was committing a breach of etiquette, and I apologize for that. Regardless, I do not want to risk the loss of that machine by going through the complex (and risky) process of updating the BIOS. I will be happy to not go to the effort of reporting problems in the future. - Aere On 07/09/2014 04:57 AM, Christopher M. [Bug 1520294] Re: Jabref (2.11.1, 2.11b3, 2.10) hangs after Java upgrade on Ubuntu 15.10
The KeyMusician Keyboard application (installed via a Debian package) was working with no problems. After applying updates (which included an update to the Open Java JRE), it now hangs during initialization. There were times in the past where I was running with it, and suddenly my X-windows session abruptly died. This problem seemed to happen when I was using the GTK+ look-and-feel. I will gather more information, to see if the GTK+ look-and-feel affects this problem. [Bug 1389904] Re: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen
I think Adriano's problem (shown in a youtube video) is different than the one I reported. I just tried booting the live CD of Lubuntu 14.04.01 on the machine (which still uses the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel that works (before the system update), and it boots to the desktop with no problem. [Bug 1389904] Re: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen
I just did a fresh install of Lubuntu 14.04.1 on my HP DeskPro machine. It rebooted and let me login to the desktop the same as it did before I encountered the problem I reported. I then used synaptic package manager (package menu) to "Lock Version" of the xserver-xorg-video-intel package to the initially installed version (2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1). I then installed updates. At the end of that process (before rebooting), I checked (using synaptic package manager) the state of the xserver-xorg-video-intel package. It showed that the installed version was 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.3, and that the latest available version was 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1. I then rebooted, and this time, it booted to a blank (but white) screen. It never gets to the point where either the mouse cursor appears, or the login-screen appears. I tried rebooting the recovery version of the latest kernel, and it booted to a blank (black) screen. I saw no error messages that gave any hint of the problem. I tried rebooting the prior kernel (that was installed with 14.04.1), and it also booted to a blank (white) screen. My UbuntuStudio system for which this process worked before (posted above), shows that the installed version is 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.2, and that the latest available version is 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1. My UbuntuStudio system still boots and works. I applied updates to it again, and it still works (xserver-xorg-video-intel was not updated in those updates). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1389904 Title: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1389904/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1389904] Re: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen
I re-tried my test where I installed Lubuntu 14.04.1, then applied updates. This time, I un-checked the "X.org X server Intel i8xx ..." update (so it wouldn't be installed), and installed updates. After installing updates, it shows that the 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1 version is the version installed. On reboot, it worked normally (no problem). It appears that using Synaptic Package Manager to force the old version (or freeze the version), as I did in my prior test, did not have the expected effect (or had no effect). [Bug 1314321] [NEW] After upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04 existing desktop launchers no longer work
Public bug reported: I had a java web-start (icedtea-netx) application installed and working on Lubuntu 14.04 beta-test release. It worked fine in that system. The application created a desktop launcher for launching it, and the desktop launcher worked. When I installed updates to bring it to the current Lubuntu 14.04 release version, the desktop launcher for the application no longer worked. Also, the icon that used to be on the desktop launcher was changed to something generic. I encountered the same problem when I upgraded a Lubuntu 13.10 system to 14.04. But when I re-installed the application, the newly-created desktop launcher worked, and it had the proper icon. The problem appears to be that the path to the icedtea cache has changed, and the launcher referenced that cache, both for the JNLP-file, and the icon. When I modified the existing desktop launcher to use the new path, it launched successfully. So my summary of the problem is: After applying updates to icedtea-netx, desktop launchers of installed Java Web-Start applications failed to work, and their icons were changed to something generic. My expectations were that the desktop launchers for installed Java Web- Start applications would continue to work after installing updates (or upgrading from Lubuntu 13.10 to 14.04). The work-around is to re-install the applications. Another work-around (not suitable for ordinary users) is to edit the text properties of the desktop launchers to use the new path to the icedtea cache. [Bug 1316384] Re: After upgrade from Lubuntu 13.10 to 14.04, color customization is ignored
>From e-mail correspondence with Lubuntu team, Rafael Laguna: The problem here aren't the themes, it is the XSettings daemon. Each environment has its own: XFCE has xfce4-settings-manager, Gnome has gnome-settings-daemon, etc. The package you're looking for is lxsession. LXDE has a standalone version of the daemon, called lxsession-daemon which loads independent config files. I need to do more tests to see if this is working. But I insist, this "bug" is not theme related. - I'm afraid yes. The theme I designed for Lubuntu, the default (called Box) is fully customizable. I added that feature after users requests. But now it's not working on ANY theme. When a desktop starts, there's a daemon that reads the themes, colours, fonts, key bindings, etc. And for an unknown reason, Lubuntu loads the theme and locks it. Even if you make a theme "customizable" (all are in some ways) you won't notice the colour changes. It loads as is. In Lubuntu, this startup function is managed by a package called "lxsession". And I'm pretty sure it's the "guilty" component. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1316384 Title: After upgrade from Lubuntu 13.10 to 14.04, color customization is ignored To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxsession/+bug/1316384/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1306235] [NEW] gdebi fails to install dependencies on Lubuntu 14.04
Public bug reported: I created a Debian package which is just a list of dependencies for using a software application I created that runs on Ubuntu Linux (all variants). The application itself is installed using icedtea (Java Web- Start). The dependencies package makes sure everything is in-place so that Java Web-Start can install the (Java) application. On prior levels of Lubuntu, this worked. But on Lubuntu 14.04 (the beta release), it fails to install the dependencies. The symptoms are, that it starts installing the package, and correctly reports the dependencies. When the user indicates to go ahead and install, fairly quickly, it reports an error, saying that the dependencies could not be installed, and that the user needs to enter "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal session. When that is done, the dependencies get installed. In further testing it, it appears that if gdebi is run from with a terminal session, it actually works, and properly installs the dependencies. However, if I right-click on the package file, requesting that it be opened with gdebi, it fails as described above. On other Ubuntu variants, I open the package with the Software Center application, which does the installation. But on Lubuntu, the Lubuntu Software Center does not perform this function, and my only option is to use gdebi to install it. I could document a list of packages for the user to manually install (which I formerly did), but installating a single package with a list of dependencies is much easier for the user. I tried to report this on the actual Lubuntu 14.04 system, but apport doesn't appear to be working on that system. So here is the summary: gdebi in installing a package (that is just a list of dependencies) fails to install the dependencies. [Bug 1251384] [NEW] On Sony Vaio PCG-F540, colors are wrong: blue=green, red=blue, green=red
Public bug reported: Having installed Lubuntu 13.10 an a Sony Vaio PCG-F540, the colors are wrong. What should be blue, appears green. What should be red appears blue. What should be green appears red. I checked this by specifying R, G, B, hexadecimal values. During the boot process (when Lubuntu with its logo, and the flashing dots below, displayed in graphics mode), the colors are correct. It isn't until the login screen appears that the colors are wrong. colors are wrong everywhere - in the wallpaper, and displaying photos, for example, as well as in the resource monitor task-bar applet (with which I tried different R,G,B values). I was able to run the Lubuntu (LXLE version) 12.04 live CD, and the colors were correct everywhere I checked, so the problem appears to have been introduced after 12.04. The symptoms were that the colors were wrong. My expectations were that the colors would be right (blue=blue, red=red, and green=green). [Bug 1389904] Re: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen
Another user ran into the same problem. Here are excerpts from the e-mail stream: Using Lubuntu 14.04. After a software update/reboot yesterday could not access my desktop. Can still access the GRUB menu. How can I get my desktop back? I want to back up my files before anything else unexpected happens! I'm guessing that I got a blank screen after updating software and it automatically upgraded my 14.04 to 14.10 at the same time. Only a guess that the new version doesn't recognize my Intel graphics driver (I've got a Dell Dimension 3100 that I've been planning to replace after 10 years this month and then this happened). So I've tried to boot from a USB with 14.10 but computer wouldn't recognize for some reason. Tried burning a CD but apparently not enough space to burn the Standard Image Disc Version. Now I'm trying to load a USB with the SID version and then try booting off that. I had created a USB boot when I originally installed 14.04 and it did work recently when I tried to access my files. But it only accessed old files, not the ones that I've created/added to over the past six months. Don't understand that at all. Adrian: I'm sorry that didn't work for you. I tend to forget that a lot of people on this list do a lot of custom configuration. I tend to assume people just use the system the way it comes, and given those assumptions, the numbered steps ought to have worked. Of course, you would get a Lubuntu desktop without custom configuration changes. But simple changes, such as changing the desktop 'wallpaper' could easily be done again. The big thing the numbered steps were to achieve, was that after installing your Lubuntu 14.04 system, and applying updates, the system would no longer boot to a blank screen. Did it at least achieve that goal? The Firefox bookmarks are probably saved in 'hidden' (.dot) files - which files I don't know. Because of this, before upgrading to a new system level, I export my Firefox bookmarks to a file, which I can later import. Knowing which files, you could copy those hidden files to your new system. Where your system booted to a blank screen on a normal update, you obviously didn't have the opportunity to export your bookmarks. Usually, system updates just work without problems, but unfortunately, this update was catastrophic. * * * * * Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Got the desktop back AND backed up all my files AND found/saved my .firefox and .thunderbird files! So appears that no data was lost. Was pretty stressed out for a few days - I'm a newbie with Linux - but all worth the experience and results. Really appreciate your assistance with this Aere. [Bug 1395599] [NEW] xset r off fails after hitting num-lock key
Public bug reported: In a terminal, after you enter the following command: xset r off It turns off key auto-repeat, as it should. You can press and hold a key, and only one such key will be displayed. If you then press the num-lock key (in the numeric key-pad), then press and hold a key, it is repeatedly displayed, and the command: xset q outputs information showing that auto-repeat has been turned back on. I expected that after doing the "xset r off" command, auto-repeat would remain off, regardless which key is pressed. Yet when I pressed the num-lock key (in the numeric key-pad), auto- repeat got turned back on. It did not do this on Ubuntu 14.04. This causes problems for an application which turns-off key-repeat by using the "xset r off" system command. I have observed this happening in both the ubuntuMATE and Lubuntu distributions. [Bug 1389904] [NEW] With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen
Public bug reported: The latest system updates for Lubuntu 14.04 includes an update to the i915 display driver, which this machine uses. After applying updates and rebooting, at the end of the boot process, where normally the login screen appears, the screen remains blank (with a black background color). That change has rendered my Lubuntu 14.04 partition completely unusable, even when booting earlier versions of the kernel. Regardless the kernel level booted, the system now boots to a blank screen. Because of this, I had to report the error on my UbuntuStudio 14.04 partition, to which I have not yet applied updates. So the level of the Intel i915 driver package in this error report is the version prior to the updated version that (probably) caused the problem. 1. The release of ubuntu with the problem is Lubuntu 14.04.1, with a kernel version ending in ".39". 2. The last working version of xserver-xorg-video-intel is 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1 I can't boot by Lubuntu partition anymore to tell you the version number that fails, but it is later than the indicated version. 3. Prior to installing system updates, my Lubuntu 14.04.01 system worked fine, and I was able to boot it and perform my suite of tests (it's a test system). After applying updates, it boots to a blank screen, and I cannot do anything with it. I expected the login screen to appear, but it doesn't, and there is no error message. 4. After applying system updates I expected my system to reboot normally, allowing me to login. Instead, a blank screen is displayed, with no error message, and the login screen does not appear after many minutes of waiting. If I hit the power button, it initiates shutdown. Hitting several keyboard characters (or typing my password to the blank screen) had no effect. Walter: Please take into consideration, that while this fix is published, every user of an affected machine will have their system rendered un-bootable, even if they specify a prior kernel level. And this will be observed, to their great dismay, on trying to reboot after applying system updates, with the only solution available to them, being to re-install the system, and don't apply updates. As such, this is a very serious problem. I'm sure it only affects certain machines, since I have applied the same update to my current primary machine (which used newer Intel graphics, using the same package), and there was no problem. If there were a way for the fix to be temporarily withdrawn from service until this problem is resolved, it might save a lot of people a lot of problems. -- Sincerely, Aere -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1389904 Title: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1389904/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1385920] Re: System does not boot to a functional graphical display
The problem I posted above, with the Dell DX-1100 machine is a different problem from this one. Some release later than release 12.04, the Intel graphics on this machine performed poorly (jagged graphics gradients, a.k.a. tearing), and even the Java Web-Start (IcedTea) logo window failed to work on 14.04. Because of this, I took steps to use a different graphics card (a NVIDIA geForce 6200), in place of the Intel graphics that appeared to have been abandoned by Linux. Where this machine has no AGP port, I used a PCI version of the NVIDIA card. To make it work, I had to set the BIOS to do "AUTO" graphics card selection, rather than using the on-board (Intel) graphics. That worked, and I have been using it for some time. However, that particular machine I have been using for my 12.04 LTS system testing, so I stopped testing newer systems on it. In collecting more information regarding this problem, I discovered that the Lubuntu 14.04 live CD system would not boot on this machine, which was a big surprise, since I thought this was a problem with 14.10. In experimenting with this machine, using different system levels, I discovered that if I used the Intel graphics card (setting the BIOS to use the 'onboard' graphics), the 14.10 live USB systems would not only boot, but that the problems with the Intel graphics have been corrected. I tried this with both Lubuntu 14.10 and ubuntuMATE 14.10, both of which worked with no problems (as long as I didn't try to use the NVIDIA PCI graphics card). That was indeed a very pleasant surprise, for which I would like to thank the developers profusely! The intel graphics has not been abandoned, but is now supported, and has been fixed! So I can take out the NVIDIA card, and everything will now be fine (well, I had a bit of a struggle getting my Windows partition to go back to using the Intel graphics, but I succeeded). I do still have the problem of the Lubuntu 14.10 live system (and ubuntuMATE as well) not booting on my Compac Deskpro 933 megahertz machine, which only has its very old Intel graphics). The problem I posted above, is actually a problem where if you boot the Live-DVD 14.10 system (both Lubuntu and ubuntuMATE), using a PCI (not AGP) NVIDIA card, with the BIOS graphics selection set to 'AUTO', it apparently goes ahead and uses the onboard (Intel) graphics card (which has no monitor connected to it), and ignores the NVIDIA PCI graphics card (which the monitor is connected-to). It would be nice if this would work (since the NVIDIA has better resolution), but I can work-around the problem by just using the Intel graphics card. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1385920 Title: System does not boot to a functional graphical display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/+bug/1385920/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1389904] Re: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen
When I boot Lubuntu 14.10 from a live-USB, it appears to do the same thing as when I rebooted after the system updates. It goes through the boot process, displaying "Lubuntu 14.10" with the 4 flashing dots (displayed in text-mode with a light-blue background). Eventually, the background changes to black, then some text messages flash-by (to quick to read), and then I get the blank, black screen (which doesn't respond to input) at the point I should see the Lubuntu live-USB desktop. When I hit the power button, it initiates shut-down, shutting-down normally.
I tried a system-recovery boot of the '-39' kernel. I could 'drop to root prompt', and do apt-get commands, but on attempting that, it complained that it was not using a read-only lock file, and the apt-get commands would fail because it could not get the lock. The root command prompt is in my dvorak keyboard layout, so I can easily type things. What do I need to type to remove the latest version of the package (xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.2), so it goes back to using the xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1 version? If I could do that, I could at least verify that it is this package version that is causing the problem. At this point, I am only guessing that is the culprit.
I did another test on this problem. On my UbuntuStudio partition of this machine, in Synaptic Package Manager, I locked the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel at version 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1. Then I applied system updates. On re-booting after applying updates, the system booted normally. I think this evidence strongly suggests that the xserver-xorg-video- intel package is causing the problem. But where I have no way of rescueing a system destroyed by this problem, I don't dare run the test where I unlock the version on this package, and apply updates again.

[Bug 1068915] [NEW] On Upgrade, expanding packages-to-remove list makes buttons unreachable
Public bug reported: Toward the beginning of the upgrade-distribution process (upgrading Lubuntu 12.04 to 12.10), it presented a dialog indicating certain packages would be removed. On this machine (having a 1024 x 768 pixel monitor), when I expanded the list to see what packages were going to be removed, the window expanded to where the button allowing me to proceed with the upgrade, was below the bottom of the screen, so it couldn't be clicked-on. un-expanding the list did not restore the window to its former size, in which the buttons were visible. I moved the window to the top of the screen, but the portion of the window with the buttons was still below the bottom of the screen. Iconifying the window, and restoring it did not help. I did not (then) know the trick of holding down the "Alt" key and clicking anywhere in the window to drag it upward. The missing portion of the window was not visible anywhere in Desktop 2 either. My only option with what I knew then, was to close the upgrade window, aborting the upgrade, and start again, which did work. The upgrade was ultimately successful.
