Have you patched SquirrelMail according to instructions in compatibility
plugin INSTALL file?

functions/strings.php file should contain line with

include_once(SM_PATH.'plugins/compatibility/functions.php'));

[SM-USERS] Autoreply/Vacation plugin that works with postfix virtual setup with db-files

2005-12-08 Thread Henrik Engmark

Is there anyone who knows of a plugin/howto that lets
users turn an autoreply on or off from within squirrelmail,
with a user modifiable text, that works with a postfix
virtual domain setup with db-files? I browsed the plugins at
squirrelmail.org, and looked at the yaa plugin, but it seems
the serveradmin has to manually edit the postfix
configurationfiles every time a user wants an autoreply.

provide more details about your setup.

try setting php error_reporting to E_ALL, display_errors to on.

if you use linux, recompile chpasswd utility or check compiled utility
with ldd.

if you use other OS, recompile chpasswd utility.

Please use SquirrelMail mailing lists for SquirrelMail support questions,
follow reply style of previous emails and stop top posting. It is hard to

[SM-USERS] SMTP - Authentication on external server / multile external servers

2005-12-08 Thread Guido Leisker

Hi,

i want to run SquirrelMail on a server at home. My Mail Accounts are on
the server of serveral providers. They require Login.
When installing SquirrelMail and testing with 'src/configtest.php' there
comes the message 'ERROR: Error connecting to SMTP server
"post.strato.de:25".Server error: (13) Permission denied'.
Thats what I expected, because in the ./configure - tool there is no way
to give SquirrelMail any authentication data.

(Where) can I give these things?
I thought thats a typical problem, but I found nothing in the FAQ. May I
haven't seen it. Then please give me a link.
Another Question is: Why can I only give one IMAP ond one SMTP-Server to
SquirrelMail? Does it only support one?

Thanks

[SM-USERS] Need guidance installing Squirrelmail

2005-12-08 Thread steve.jacobs

This is my first post to this list.
We have been asked to install Squirrelmail for a small not-for-profit project in support of mentoring students with disabilities.
I tried following the installation instructions that accompany Squirrelmail to no avail.  Unfortunately, I am not technical enough to understand all of the instructions.
I do not think helping me will take much of an effort.
Our work installing Squirrelmail is all being done gratis.
If there is someone out there with the holiday spirit to spend a little time on the phone with me walking through the installation please drop me a note.   Needless to say, any response to this request would be most appreciated. :-)
Thanks for any consideration.
Sincerely,
Steve Jacobs

Also RTFM. There is a very long troubleshooting section in the README
and it indicates that you cannot expect to be helped unless you follow
the steps therein.

Lots of free help is given on this list. You should post exactly what
problems and questions you are having or jump on IRC and you will
usually get the pointers you need to resolve your issues.

configtest.php does not need authentication data. It only tries to open
smtp connection. Even if script contains authentication options, it won't
be able to use them, because it will have to open smtp connection first.

> (Where) can I give these things?

SquirrelMail tries to use same username and password as the one that is
used in imap connection. Site wide password configuration options are
available only in 1.5.1cvs config_local.php overrides. Check 1.5.1cvs
doc/authentication.txt

Fix your Fedora, RHEL or CentOS SELinux setup.

Please note you should reply in the same format I originally did -- in
context, not at the top. Also, reply onlist so other people can help
you. The point is to share the free help with everyone else.

All the info you need is on the squirrelmail.org website - there is a
"SquirrelMailIRC" link in the FAQ section:

Re: [SM-USERS] Machine freezes for 30 seconds when doing 'view' on this attachment

2005-12-08 Thread Roman Gaufman
I'm sorry, but during the course of the attachment opening, even top takes about 10 seconds to start and the server is completely unusable. I can easily kill the machine with a recursive wget of the attachment. How would that not be considered a security issue?

[SM-USERS] End User Issues

2005-12-08 Thread David Thompson

This is David with Redwire technical support. I
have a user that is reporting a rather strange issue with this squirrelmail. I
was not able to reproduce the issue on my end of things but he says he hasn't
made any changes to his computer. He is using IE on XP Pro. He described to me
the text in the emails showing up as "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" which
is the wingdings font. I did check all of his settings and I did roll them all
back to default. I stopped short of uninstalling IE and reinstalling it
however.

[SM-USERS] Configuring Squirrelmail for non-standard SMTP port

2005-12-08 Thread David Ramsey
A few months ago, I set up a Barracuda Spam Firewall to help manage
the loads of spam my mail server was getting.

I created an MX record for my domain to point to the Barracuda.
Everything worked great.

Except that there was still some spam coming in because the spammers
were sending directly to the SMTP port on my server, and ignoring the
MX record.

OK, so I changed my mail server's SMTP port to a non-standard port,
and reconfigured the Barracuda to send to that port. Everything
worked great. Users had to reconfigure their SMTP settings in their
mail clients, but it was all cleared up in a day or two and the spam
load dropped to pretty much zero.

Except said users can no longer send mail through Squirrelmail. Click
the "Send" button and the error is "Connection refused/Server
replied: 61".

Yes, I reconfigured Squirrelmail's SMTP settings to use the new port.
No, I didn't change anything else...no TLS, etc.

Anyone have any ideas? I've searched online, scoured the archives,
and haven't seen anything like this.

[SM-USERS] Randomly running slow

2005-12-08 Thread Kristen

Hi,

I am having problems with Squirrelmail randomly runnning really slowly.
It has times when it runs lightning fast and other times it comes to a
crawl. I'm having a hard time diagnosing what is causing the problem,
whether it's my setup or the Virtual Private Server we're running on.

I'm out of ideas of what to check and try next, and I would love any
suggestions or possible reasons you might conceive for my problem.

I check top and netstat, and all the VPS resources are all well beneath
their limits. Our hosting provider verified that it's not a problem
caused by lack of resources.

We don't have many users, less than 10 people are checking their e-mail
at a time. However, it is not uncommon for them to be sending e-mails
up to 5 MB.

Here are some details of my setup:

Our hosting company installed Debian 3.0 on our VPS for us, with several
default programs, including a pop server - popa3d. I found that the
problem became better when I uninstalled the popa3d server. Squirrelmail
went from crawling to being lightning fast when I uninstalled it. I
thought the problem was solved, but then it started up again. I am sure
that the pop server is not running anymore. After doing a apt-get
remove, I no longer see it in the netstat reports as listening on a port.

The IMAP server I installed is Dovecot. I am using the default IMAP port
(143), and have SMTP set with port 25. I tried changing the address from
localhost to 127.0.0.1 (after reading the Wiki at
http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/BrowseProblemsByComplaint to improve
speed), but that didn't make any difference for me.

Under general options, I set server side sorting and server thread sort
to true, and did all the tests I found on a wiki page to ensure that my
Dovecot setup supported them (it does).

Here are the plugins I have installed:
Installed Plugins
1. abook_take
2. squirrelspell
3. mail_fetch
4. filters
5. archive_mail
6. compatibility
7. image_buttons
8. calendar
9. calendar_sql_backend
10. abook_import_export
11. notify
12. change_passwd
13. abook_group
14. spam_buttons

I am running SpamAssassin version 3.1.0. I have SpamAssasin set up to
skip over large files, so it shouldn't be running on them.

I am also running:
Dovecot version 0.99.14-1 (installed from Debian's apt-get)
Apache 2
PHP 4.3.10-16 (cli)(i believe from an apt-get)
mysql Ver 12.22 Distrib 4.0.24 (i believe from an apt-get)
SquirrelMail version 1.4.4 (installed from Debian's apt-get)

I am also having Apache deflate all their messages, based on an idea I
read somewhere on the newsgroups or the wiki.

The last time squirrelmail was running extremely slow, there were no logs
in the /var/log/mail.err for that entire day.

in /var/log/mail.warn, there are a bunch of
   "gethostbyaddr(65.254.37.174) failed: 1"
messages (which I get a bunch of every day) and one
"jB56pKDw020704: collect: premature EOM: unexpected close"
message at the beginning of the day.

also on the last slow day, the only errors in my apache2 error.log file are:
 File does not exist: /usr/share/squirrelmail/favicon.ico
which I get a ton of every day, and from what I read on the some other
sites, doesn't seem like it should be causing a problem.

I have looked through all the other log files and don't see anything that
looks out of the ordinary to me.

I'm currently working with my VPS provider sending them ping and
traceroute to see if it's an issue with the packets. Unfortunately I
don't have any of this data for the period when it was running slow. Is
there another way I can determine if this slowness is caused by my
hosting company or by something I've done? The slowness seems completely
random to me - sometime's it during the day when they are accessing their
e-mail a lot, and sometimes it's during the weekend, during the middle of
the night, when I'm most likely the only one noticing the problem.

Would upgrading to SquirrelMail 1.4.5 be a logical next step to try and
solve these issues? Like I said, I'm willing to consider any suggestion.
 I'm just need some ideas!

Thanks!
Kristen
