Sharing a printer with SAMBA
Gday y'all, Im trying to share a CUPS printer over samba. I can see the printer, but when i try to print to it from a windows box i get the message "Access Denied, Cannot connect.". I seem to be able to print a test page from the http config tool. This same problem hapened with lpd. I am running Debian GNU/LINUX 3.0 (woody) with an Epson Stylus Color 600 on /dev/lp0. Re: debian-user-digest Digest V2002 #400
Hey Thanks But I went to the ATI site, and all they seem to have are rpms. And like I said, the "rpm" distrobutions have no problem with my card during install. I also tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and entered in all the. bus information( I think I got it right, tried it about 16 different ways) but still no luck seeing this card. Unfortunately this situation has kept me on Mandrake and RedHat for 2 years because I always cannot install anything else even after days of trying. Is there a known broken package? How do I fix the problem? The fine folks on #debian at irc.openprojects.net suggested a problem between libc6 2.3.1-6 and a 2.2 kernel, though I've not yet found how to fix it with apt-get broken. I do not believe that I am running sid. I believe that it is the testing release, though I am not certain how I can tell. Thanks! Now, my next question regards things that change permissions while you're not looking. For instance, I changed the groups on my /etc/ppp directory yesterday (mentioned in my last post), and today it was changed back to root:root. Is this something that might be a cron job? Re: I am not impressed with Debian so far.
Hi, I thought I'd just throw in that I have used both Red Hat (5.0 ->) and SuSE (5.1 ->) and am mightily impressed by The Debian Experience. The install process is rather rough, I'll admit. I just pick the installation type from the "custom" menu on the Slink disk and grit my teeth as dselect does its work. Am I the only one that finds dselect to be a horrible package manager to work with? Once it's installed, though, Debian works beautifully. I run bleeding-edge Potato (weekly updates) and have run into only minor problems (suid su, &[EMAIL PROTECTED] /etc/ppp permissions) so far. Apt is a wonderful tool, and Gnome-Apt completes the package. One question: How do I point Apt at something else besides an http connection? I'd like to use it on CD-ROM images, if possible. Dpkg would take forever to use and, as I've said before, I hate dselect. As for sound, I must say that I've had a few problems with it. Of course, I had similar problems in previous versions of RH... Go fig. Anyway, once you've compiled in the kernel modules that you'll need, try this: Grab an rpm of RH's sndconfig, alien it over to a .deb, and install it. I used it, and it worked the first time (SB AWE-64 PNP). Is there a comparable Debian tool that I've been missing? Anyway, I just thought I'd share :-) Keep up the good work! I am currently working on getting my local RH-dominated LUG to convert :-) -Chris

Check out http://www.redhat.com/mirrors.html for a list. For instance, this one is fairly close to me: ftp://groucho.cs.wisc.edu/pub/linux/redhat/redhat-6.0/i386/RedHat/RPMS/sndconfig-0.33-1.i386.rpm I think that I might have used the RH 5.2 version, but this one ought to do. YMMV. Anyway, the RH mirrors are many, though their organization level varies wildly. Generally, though, you can find a stock image (such as the one above) on every mirror. Cheers, -Chris
Unmapped keystrokes?
I've just noticed this problem recently... It seems that a number of keystrokes fail to do anything. In emacs or Jed, ^W, ^K, ^F, and probably a number of others do nothing, or at least don't do what they're supposed to do. ^X, ^S and ^C all seem to work, though. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? I have a tough time interpreting keymap files, so I don't know if something is missing or not. These keystrokes have worked for three months, and I can't recall upgrading for at least three weeks, so I haven't a clue what might have caused this. Any help would be much obliged. Thanks, -Chris
Missing key bindings
Hi. I've posted this before, but maybe some of you missed it... Anyway, my problem is that I am missing some very useful key bindings all of a sudden. Some of these include contol-alt-delete, control-k, control-f, control-w, and a number of others. Other bindings such as control-x and control-s still work. The same thing happens in my RedHat partition,so I sense an ominous Hardware Problem... They tend to be more worrisome than software problems :-P One odd thing I have noticed about the box is that it emits a rapid clicking throughout the BIOS bootstrapping (much like the sound that it normally only makes during its RAM count). This sound goes away once it hits my boot manager. I have an Epox MVP3G-M MoBo. Does anyone have any idea what or where I should check for problems? I'd like to fix this ASAP since Emacs and Jed are rather irritating to use in my system's current state :-P Thanks, -Chris

It is based on the Data Encryption Standard algorithm with variations intended (among other things) to discourage use of hard? ware implementations of a key search. key is a user's typed password. salt is a two-character string chosen from the set [a-zA-Z0-9./]. This string is used to perturb the algo? rithm in one of 4096 different ways. By taking the lowest 7 bit of each character of the key, a 56-bit key is obtained. This 56-bit key is used to encrypt repeatedly a constant string (usually a string consisting of all zeros). The returned value points to the encrypted password, a series of 13 printable ASCII characters (the first two characters represent the salt itself). The return value points to static data whose content is overwritten by each call. Chris --- Debian GNU/Linux Ooohh You are missing out! --- Reply with subject 'key' for PGP public key. KeyID A9E087D5
Xterm color
Hi, I'm having trouble with color support in xterm. At the moment I am running xterm with the terminfo as xterm, which seems to disable all color support (although ls --color still works ?). When I mean color support I'm talking about programs such as mutt and dselect. When I change terminfo to xterm-debian I get color support on my local machine, but when I connect to another machine (also debian 2.0) color still doesn't work in mutt (although I now does in dselect). I am connecting via ssh (although I tried with telnet as well). Is anyone able to explain this behaviour? Can anyone tell me how to make it work properly?? Also, I'd prefer not to use xterm-debian, as whenever I connect to uni machines I get the message "Sorry, I don't know anything about your "xterm-debian" terminal" whenever I try and run anything like vi, etc. Is there any advantage to xterm-debian (and anyway to make it more seamless?) Hmmm. The following is what I prefer about debian, but this is just for me, and may not be better for you. 1) Everything is ensured to be "in the right place". This means that if I go looking for an installed file, config file, etc, then it is *always* in a sensible location. 2) The package management is excellent, which lets me easily and virtually flawlessly install packages via ftp (or http) on the fly. I also love the fact that I can update my entire system to the latest versions with only two commands. Also the packages themselves are really nice to work with, particularily for a developer (unlike redhats rpms), and utilities like make-kpkg, make-deb, etc make my life alot easier. 3) The high degree of documentation. Every package is garanteed to be documented to some degree (even if only to say that there is no docs). 4) The free nature of debian. I know debian is free and I know I can get any package I want from the ftp site (or any mirror). 5) From my experience debian has *alot* less problems, particularily with regards to security, than other distros. 6) I'm not tied down by kludgy gui's for doing system maintainence. 7) The sence of worth you get from working with an open development project. The people making and using debian are friendly and very community spirited. I get the feeling that most people are proud to be using debian, and the developers take great pride in their work. 8) The support provided by these mailing lists. Theres probably a dozen other reasons, but I think that'll do for now :) > Also do you think debian will continued to be developed? > I read somewhere that the head of the progect quite because he thought the > progress was not fast enough. File path caching?
Hi all, I've got another weird problem which is kind of annoying. Say I have a program in /usr/bin, called fred for example. I can run fred and everything is fine. Then I create a file in /usr/local/bin, which is also called fred (say a wrapper for the real one). Since /usr/local/bin is earlier in my path it should run first. However when I try and run fred, it still runs the original version in /usr/bin, until I log out and log back in again. Also, if I log out and back in I can run /usr/local/bin/fred, but if I then delete that program and try running fred again, I get a "file not found" error, despite there being a executable called fred in /usr/bin. Can anyone explain why this happens? Thanks, Chris -- --- REALITY.SYS corrupted: Reboot universe? (Y/N/Q) ...Debian GNU/Linux --- Reply with subject 'key' for PGP public key. You will get a runaway vi taking up all your spare clock cycles. Not good. I think this is because these programs ignore hangup signals, and so when the shell dies, the hangup doesn't kill the process, even though it loses it's standard input - hence it 'running away' as it tries to read from an empty file stream. Hi, I just found out that I can boot a linux system to root by typing the following at the lilo prompt: linux init=/bin/sh Due the environment in which the machines running linux are used, I would like to disable the ability to modify boot methods. Does anyone know how I can do this? Thanks, Chris -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
System.map
Hi, I was wondering if somebody could give me an idea of what the System.map file is for? I've allways compiled my own kernels, and never had to worry about this file (never had any problems). However I tried to use the command lsof, and it complains that it can't find a System.map file to match my currently booted kernel. What does this mean - and how can it be rectified? I've looked through the docs and it doesn't appear to be mentioned. Thanks, Chris -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: System.map
Just a thought - when I compile and installed my own kernel, I used the zImage kernel. I played with make-kpkg, and this wants to put the files vmlinuz & vmlinux in /boot. Would using zImage instead of vmlinux cause problems? How do I produce vmlinux from the kernel source? BTW, I can't see any install options in the kernel makefile. I just followed the instructions in the readme, which were to: make config make clean; make dep make zImage make modules make modules-install cp arch/i386/boot/zImage /boot modify lilo to include /boot/zImage The README doesn't mention anything about System.map :( Thanks for any information, Chris On Sun, 24 May 1998, Bill Mitchell wrote: > Off the top of my head --- > > That file gives the memory addresses of symbolic variables used in > the kernel. Accessing html forms...
Hi all, This is off the topic, but I figured I could ask anyhow. I have to periodically access an post type form on a web page, and I would like to do this automatically (ie. write a script/program to do it, rather than having to load up netscape and do it by hand). I've played with programs like snarf for downloading pages, but I need to actually post some data to a server. Anyone have any information on ways to do this? I must admit that I don't know too much about http - expecially cgi stuff. Thanks for any help, Chris -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I know perl very well, and as Ralph said it has proved invaluable. However, what I want to do is ~send~ something to a html server via a POST operation. Scenerio is as follows: There is a web page on a remote site that contains a form which I must fill out on a regular basis. Rather than loading netscape and going to the page, then filling out the form, I would like to write a program to connect to the remote http server (actually via a proxy) and send the POST information automatically. I can then add it as a cron job. Unfortunately I don't know the protocol used for sending POST (I've done plenty of cgi-bin to except POST before), and I was wanting some information on that, or a utility that does this allready (something like snarf). Compiling a kernel
Hi, There was some discussion a while ago about installing a new kernel. I was just wondering if someone had some definate instructions for installing a 'debian compliant' kernel (with correct system.maps, etc, etc). Following the instructions in the README for the kernel source does not work correctly (there is no mention of a system.map file for instance), and I've got a funny feeling I should be putting in a vmlinux (or vmlinuz ?) file instead of zImage. Hi again, Thanks to Ralph for his instructions (below). However, after packaging the kernel, then installing I still get the following message when I run lsof: mort:~# lsof lsof: kernel symbol address mismatch: el3_probe get_kernel_syms() value is 0x2825004; /boot/System.map-2.0.33 value is 0x1a444c. There was 1 additional mismatch. /boot/System.map-2.0.33 and the booted kernel may not be a matched set. Any ideas what is causing this? My lilo config is the following: boot=/dev/hda2 root=/dev/hda2 compact install=/boot/boot.b map=/boot/map vga=normal delay=0 image=/vmlinuz label=Linux read-only /vmlinuz is a symlink to /vmlinuz-2.0.33. why should email v's ftp? (was Re: What DO you lose with Linux ???)

It doesn't do the debian user community any > good to have many of its good people wrapped up in a pointless thread. > Just my $0.02. > > Steve > Well...yes, it has gotten out of hand - but really, why waste it? In simple summury, we have the following issues for large file transfer: email: ("the bane of postmasters everywhere") - inefficient file transfer methods. - large amounts of space required on possibly numerous servers for spooling. - difficult for a reciever to choose whether to receive the file or not. - DOS possibilities. ftp/http(et al): - difficult to use, requires a user to know how to use them - to place the files in appropriate places and to pass correct urls to the files. - often not an available alternative due to ISP restrictions. - lack of security (ok, email isn't secure either - but _far_ less people have the technical skills + access to snoop email transfer). So far these are the only protocols mentioned for transfering files between people over the internet. Both have their problems, thus neither is a good solution. Now - I was thinking, what this debian-user lists represents is some of the best computer programmers in the world mixed with one of the largest user bases. Surely between ourselves we have the ability to come up with a "Better Way"? What is really stopping us from developing a better solution ourselves? These things have to start somewhere... Here is my first suggestion: One program I use regularily on linux is sendfile (see the sendfile package guys). This program is very useful - although it suffers from some of the same problems as email transfer (the file is transfer is done immediately, hence spooling is required, DOS possible, etc). What would be nice is if this program only transfered the file when the user chooses to "recieve". This would require the file to be spooled on the senders machine awaiting download - which is a much better solution than "transfer then spool". A basic algorithm to do this could be: User requests a file be sent. Their "sendfile server" (either their local machine or a server that gives them access) will be sent the file and it will store it somewhere. A ticket is then sent back to the user which contains a URL (or similar) for the file plus an authentication code, so that the file can only be downloaded by supplying that code (you could even add support for a limited timeframe to pervent indefinate file storage). This ticket is sent to the recipient (possibly with a email message), and upon receipt the user is given the option to download the file. The recipient could use information such as the sender and the file size to choose to a) download the file, b) not download the file (and remove from the "sendfile server" or c) differ the choice until later. There is also the possibility to set up automatic download at the client end if required. It would all be part of the client software. getting WP to run in Potato
Hi. After much struggle getting the file itself, I've finally installed WP 8. Unforunately, I am having some trouble with it. When I first installed it, the program refused to find the library libXpm.so.4 even though that exact file was in /usr/X11R6/lib, a directory which is (of course) in my ld.so.conf. So, to remedy this, I made a symbolic link (with the same name, of course) to /usr/lib. Now the program segfaults :-p I made a stacktrace, but I can't really understand what's going on... If anyone's interested in seeing it, let me know. I am running a mostly potatofied Debian system with a 2.2.6 kernel on a K6-2 450 system with 128 MB RAM. Suggestions are very welcome. -Chris
VideoRam settings?
Well, I upgraded my X server to 3.3.3.1, but it hasn't really helped very much. To review, my previous problem was that i was able to get my Xserver to run at 1024x768 after much tweaking, and even then it was sprkly, the mouse pointer was a green block, and the vertical axis was partially repeated on the top and bottom of the screen. Now, with my new Xserver files, XF86Setup segfaults, and I can't seem to make the server recognize that I have 8 MB of video RAM. Here's the card entry from my XF86Config file: Section "Device" Identifier "Primary Card" VendorName "Unknown" BoardName "Diamond Viper 330" VideoRam8192 EndSection Now, my question is: where is it getting the 2 MB size? The XF86Config file that I edit is in /etc/X11. Is there another one lying around that might be overriding my settings? Is there another spot in the XF86Config file that also might override the device entry? I might also note that the Xserver has no qualms with running at 800x600 32 bpp. However, the main point of buying a 17" monitor was to expand my desktop, and running the same resolution as I had on my 15" monitor does not forward that cause. So, my stats are: mostly potatofied Debian, XFree86 3.3.3.1 SVGA server (from http://master.debian.org/~branden/xfree86-3331/), kernel 2.2.6, glibc 2.1, etc... TIA, -Chris
PHP3+MySQL problems
Hi. Well, I seem to be having problems getting PHP to recognize that I have mysql support in place. When I try to view a document with a mysql_connect() function in it, I get: Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function mysql_connect() in /home/cmayes/public_html/apples.php3 on line 12 Now, the given php script will probably not work correctly as I do not have things set up exactly the way I had them on the machine where I had originally wrote (copied) the script. Even so, it should be able to use the function, right? Anyway, I checked for the .so, and yep, it's in the right place: cmayes:/usr/lib/php3/apache# ls calendar.so crypt.so mysql.so In my /etc/php3/apache/php3.ini: extension_dir = /usr/lib/php3/apache The strange thing is that I had done almost exactly the same thing on a previous Debian install without a problem. I have the following packages installed from the unstable tree: mysql mysql-dev mysql-client apache php3 php3-mysql php3-cgi-mysql (just to be safe) ..and the dependencies associated with the above. I am running a potatofied Debian on a 2.2.6 kernel. What else should I check, change or do in order to track down the problem? Standard PHP seems to work fine, BTW. TIA, -Chris
Weird su problems
Well, living on the blleding edge seems to have finally bitten me in the ass ;-) I normally do an apt-get update;apt-get upgrade every week or so unless I hear about major fixes. I did such an upgrade earlier today, upgrading nearly everything that could be upgraded. The only immediate abnormality was that X seemed to freeze (I could move the mouse, but clicking did nothing) soon after I upgraded some Gnome packages. When I got back to my machine later, I found that ppp had reset some permissions on the ppp directory (it took dip off of the group, for some reason). I went to su to root, and I got a bad password error. Of course, I totally panicked. I quit X and restarted it, but the problem remained. As a desperate measure, I switched to another console and tried to log in as root and... it worked. It looks like some element relating to su has been broken. I apologize for not knowing which package contains su, but I have the latest version for Potato (x86) as of Wednesday (yesterday). I've just discovered that su fails to work on the console, too. Should I downgrade some packages (and if so, how is that done?) or wait until the next version of package x(y,z) to come out? Is anyone else having this problem? Thanks, -Chris
Compiling a Kernel 2.0.x with Debian 2.2 (potato)
Hi, I've upgraded to the Debian 2.2 (potato) release. The the default gcc enviroment is based on gcc-2.95 (egcs-1.2). These include the compilers g++, gobjc, g77, chill and gcj and libraries libstdc++2.9(-dev), libg++2.8.2(-dev). gcc-2.95 provides the preferred C compiler which is called `gcc'. This compiler is not able to compile old kernel 2.0.x releases. So I added to my standard gcc-2.95 enviroment the following compiler an librarys:gcc272, libg++272(-dev), g++272 After doing this I tried to configure the 2.0.38 Kernel with the following option: make CC=gcc272 CXX=g++272 menuconfig But I get an error message witch tells me about some ncurses problem. This seemed very strange to me because nothing changed from debian version 2.1 to 2.2 concerning the ncrses librarys. To avoid the problem with the ncurses library I configured my kernel with this option: make CC=gcc272 CXX=g++272 config After configuring the kernel I tried to compile it with this: make CC=gcc272 CXX=g++272 dep clean zImage But the make process stops after several error messages. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong ! Thanks Chris

Sendmail setup....
Hi all. I was hoping that someone could help with a rather obscure techinique I'm trying to implement with sendmail. Basically our network has two different mail servers - one for a student network, and one for administration staff. They both accept mail for the same domain address. Now all the mail from outside is first delievered to the admin server (it is also the network gateway), then any mail that is explicitly known to be for a student is passwd on to the student mail server (via entries in the aliases file - such as "student: [EMAIL PROTECTED]"). However, when a student sends outgoing mail, it is sent first to the student mail server. If the mail is for a local address the student server must then determine if it is actually for an admin account, and if so pass it on to the admin server (again this is currently done by entries in the aliases file - such as "adminuser: [EMAIL PROTECTED]"). Confusing? Now what I am trying to do is remove the need for each machine to know exactly what users are on the other. I have done this for incoming mail by configuring the admin server to forward any mail for unknown users to the student server so that it can attempt delivery. I tried to do the same for the student server, but the problem is that any mail for a real unknown address ends up boncing back and forth between the two servers. What I would like to do is to configure sendmail to first check if the mail has allready been through the other machine before relaying unknown users to it - but as you've probably guessed I really wouldn't know where to begin. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris -- E-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST. Trouble? E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

Hi, Sorry if this is off-the-topic. I am trying to set up a firewall on our network, but to allow ftp connections from internal machines to specific external sites (on a per-site basis). The problem I am having is that ftp seems to use ports other than 20 and 21. At the moment I only allow transfers on these two ports. This allows me to make an ftp connection (ie. the external site prompts for username password, and I can enter those) but when I try to do any transfers (ie gets, puts, or lists) they just time out. disk partition problem
Hello. I have been reading about Debian, and I am eager to try it out. However, I seem to have a problem that I have not found an answer for yet, even after searching through all of the FAQ's and help documents I could find. The problem is with partitioning my hard disk. I DO NOT want to wipe it out (like using fdisk), so instead I tried FIPS (found on the Linux CD). First I scanned and defragged my disk, then I tried to run fips. Then it told me there was a file(s) at the end of my hard disk. So I checked the documentation on fips and it listed a two files that might be at the last sector, but it wasn't true on my machine. And that's where I'm stuck. Please help me or tell me where I can get help so I can free myself from the tyranny of Windows!! Thanks for your time Chris P.S. runaway processors
Hi all, I am having problems with user process's running away (taking up 99.8% CPU time) on our linux server (primary examples being elvis and netscape). Is there an easy way to get the server to recognise these - and kill them off? I know elvis runs away if you close the xterm (or window manager) that elvis is running in - I haven't figured out the cause for the others... Software watchdog & full process table
Hi, One of our network servers went down for reboot in the middle of last night, which was done by the software watchdog. The log message was as follows: daemon.log:Apr 10 03:15:44 seldon watchdog[102]: process table is full! daemon.log:Apr 10 03:15:44 seldon watchdog[102]: shutting down the system Does anyone know what does this mean, and what would cause this to happen? Is there anyway to determine what was happening on the machine? Thanks for any assistance, Chris -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? skill and snice are broken?
I am running a bo system, and I have skill and snice installed - but they don't seem to work I get a message saying that it was unable to find matching processes, no matter what sort of arguments I give it. Upgrading to hamm
Hi, I am currently running a debian bo system, and I am considering upgrading (or more to the point - re-installing) to a hamm system. I am, however, conserned about stablility... A few things about Debian Hamm
Can anybody tell me when hamm is expected to go stable? Also, I am in the middle of installing a hamm system onto a clean drive, however it seems alot of old packages are missing (ie. pine, etc). Will these be included when it goes stable? Another thing - is there any plans for debianizing the enlightenment window manager? Thanks alot, chris BTW. I noticed that the rescue target doesn't work on the new rescue disk, nor does the base installation install any kernel modules... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". ATM and linux
I was wondering if debian linux had any support for ATM interfaces? Video Modes in X
I am trying to get my X running 1152x862 at 16 bpp - Vertical scan = 60Hz, Horizontal Scan = 56Hz. The only hastle is that there is no modeline for this in my XF86Config, and I don't know how to write one. Mutt & libc6
Hi, With all the discussion of pine v's mutt, etc, etc, I thought I'd take a look a mutt and see what people where on about. However, I am currently running a bo system (waiting for hamm to go stable) and I can't find a package for mutt. Is there one? The only package I could see was for hamm - and that requires libc6. Also, I was considering installing libc6 - is it difficult? what would be the best way to do it (ie. should I just get the libc6.deb file and use dpgk -i?) You can increase the difficulty by setting the bios to only boot from HDD and then locking the bios - but if he's smart enough that you have to worry about the root password, he's going to know how to reset the bios. In addition, if you have dos/windoze installed as well, and he can run it, he can most likely reset your bios without even taking the case off (use one of the numerous bios hacking programs around). I still don't know how the user managed to get them into a file name! Also, just out of interest, you can also enclose alot of those strange characters (such as ~) in single quotes (ie '~'). Quota on Mail systems
Hi. I am trying to implement quotas on the mail system of my debian linux server. I have configured the quota system so that users have a quota on /var/spool. This quota works fine and enforces the limit correctly when a user attempts to put any files in that filesystem via the shell - but when a user recieves mail it is placed into their mail file - regardless of their disk quota. So affectively the mail system is quotaless. Can anybody explain this behaviour and perhaps suggest how I may correct this?? I believe this is because it is running as root (although it really should assume the id of the user just before attempting to deliver the mail). Perhaps to overcome the problem with the quota notification, the quota warnings should be delivered by root, using an alternate MDA (such as deliver) - which means the user will recieve the mail regardless of their quota?
