AcceleratedX4.1.1 work with GLIBC ?

1998-09-19 Thread aphro
I had slackware runnin great for about 2 years, could never get XFREE
running on slack but was shocked to see it setup perfectly in debian 2. I
still wanted to try to get AcceleratedX working, but when I installed it,
and hit startx, or Xsetup, nothing happened..no errors..just got a new
command prompt. Does AccelX run with glibc? i have the libc5-compat package
installed.. and nowhere in my AccelX manual nor on the cd's documentation
does it say _anything_ about glibc problems.

Also, any way to get Staroffice 4 to run on Debian 2 ? when i tried the
installer, it crashed(saw the readme say it didn't support glibc)
..Staroffice5 ? what about applix how's that run in glibc. I saw an email a
week or 2 back about getting SO3 to work in debian, saved it will look over
it again later..or maybe it mentioned SO4 i forgot. since this list
generates so much traffic i had to make another account just for this list
;) if you reply to this would you be so kind as to send it/cc it to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as well, as that is one of my main addresses. I usually
download this mail once a week in packages of 900+ and it'd be hard to sort
thru them all :|

one last question ..can anybody reccomend a POP client for X that can
handle multiple accounts smoothly. 5 of my accounts i try to check
regularly. (keep different ones for different purposes)

I got a pretty good linux-links page up as well ..not just linux links it
has other things too if your interested - http://yahoo.aphroland.org .
About 350 links total, around 160-170 linux-specific. made it cuz it was a
pain to keep my favorites/bookmarks available through 2 computers, 5 OSs,
and about 8 different browsers ack! heheh (and before you flame me for
using eudora..im only using win95 to test out my new v90 flash!! honest! :>
--sofar it sucks )

dpkg/libstdc++2.9 trouble!

1999-09-28 Thread aphro
Don't know if this is a bug in the removal script for this package or not
but this is what I get: (both when used with -r and --purge)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~] dpkg -r libstdc++2.9-dev
(Reading database ... 42362 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing libstdc++2.9-dev ...

more information. dpkg: error processing libstdc++2.9-dev (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1 Errors were
encountered while processing:

I can rm the files manually but how would i tell the database that the
package is removed ?

thanks! getting tons of probs compiling c++ apps and hopin that reverting
to a pure 2.7.2.3 config with libg++ and stuff will help fix.

Re: problem with /dev/lp0

1999-10-06 Thread aphro
which module is loaded for the parallel port? i prefer static kernels but
from what i can see you would need parport_pc loaded and not parport. and
for 2.2.x you gotta tell it to support parallel printers in character
device section of config, again i always do my kernels as much static as i
can since it so rarely changes..only stuff like vmware, lm_sensors etc get
to be modules.

I tried posting to linuxquake.com and got no response..maybe someone here

Quake 2 shareware runs great.. full 3D acceleration (TNT) no crashes no

the problem is when i try it with my quake2 cd. It won't load..here is
the output: Happens with both quake 2 3.19 from slink and from 3.20 which
i d/l offa cdrom.com. Happens both when i run from the cd, or copy the
files off it and run from hd. checked the newsgroups and other places
didn't find anything that mentions this error.

Re: Latest Wine effectively broken?

1999-10-10 Thread aphro
the latest wine is broken anyway for me at least. i just had to recompile
the older one from august to get cdrwin to work properly. kept getting
MSVCRT20.DLL errors and it crashed whenever i tried to open a 'browse'
dialog box. recompiled the latest today and it still puked on me, went to
the build from august and it works fine. burning a cd in cdrwin right now
actually.

damn i love linux.

Re: Startup scripts

1999-10-11 Thread aphro
best way is to make a script

slap the script in /etc/init.d

put a link to it in /etc/rc?.d

where ? = runlevel (runlevel 2 is defailt for debian so /etc/rc2.d )

make sure to chmod +x the script

name the link according to how you want it to start as it reads the files
in order. if you don't care when it loads then it doesnt matter what you
name it.

$PATH in X ?

1999-10-11 Thread aphro
I was wondering what the best way to set the path globally in X. e.g. i
compile kde apps by hand and they all go into /usr/local/kde/bin and no
matter what i do i can't get that into my $PATH for X. its in my
/etc/enviornment and /etc/profile and i added it to /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup
but still it doesn't showup. I use a self compiled copy of afterstep as
my WM.

TIA

Re: vnc-problems

1999-10-11 Thread aphro
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html#q20

Q20 Why can I only run vncserver/Xvnc as root?

The most likely reason for this is that Xvnc can't create the unix domain
socket (the path for this unix domain socket is usually
/tmp/.X11-unix/Xn). Try making sure that users can write to this directory
by making it world-writable, i.e. "chmod a+w /tmp/.X11-unix". Note that to
avoid a security loophole the "sticky bit" should also be set on the
directory by doing "chmod o+t /tmp/.X11-unix". If you don't do this then
someone else logged in to the same machine may be able to intercept the X
protocol and thereby access your desktop and snoop on it, etc. An
alternative is to set the Xvnc binary to have the same permissions as your
normal X server, but this may be more of a security risk.

Re: Netscape and its cache

1999-10-11 Thread aphro
i for one love netscape. mainly for it's roaming abilities. i setup
mod_roaming on my main www server an can get my bookmarks and cookies and
history files from any machine at any time. at home i use squid for my
cache and i set my cache in netscape to 0. dont remember if netscape still
caches things but it doesnt matter to me, squid works better. although
because of the roaming stuff i do close out netscape when im done using
it, i don't go weeks or days with it open. if i didn't the roaming
information would be out of synch.

XF86 modelines

1999-10-12 Thread aphro
can someone explain what the XF86 option 'doublescan' is ? I'm trying to
define modelines so i can watch videoCDS full screen with MPEGTV.

not having much luck though. For some reason the modelines generated from
XF86Setup make the really low resolutions (below 640x480) run at really
high refresh rates(say, 130hz) which my monitor (Princeton E0500) doesnt
support. Maybe
someone on this list has a E0500 and can let me take a look/try at their
modelines. kvidtune didn't generate any useable modelines either. (and it
crashes with a floating exception below 480x XXX ) I'm using a Creative
Labs TNT 16MB @ 1024x768 76hz currently (1024x768 85Hz max for my monitor)

any ideas would be appreciated :)

libpgtcl.so.1 => libpgtcl.so.1
libtcl8.0.so.1 => libtcl8.0.so.1

i'd find where libtcl8.0.so.1 (locate) is and make a link to it and name
the link libtcl8.0.so i encounter this kind of problem often and this
usually fixes it.(last night i linked libMesaGLU.so to libGLU.so so some
3D plugins for xmms to commpile) there may be another way but this one
works for me.

id avoid proftpd until they re write the thing, too many bugs in it's
core, unless security isn't a main concern. wuftpd has similar problems
but most of them have been fixed and i've seen no reports of flawed code

v20 (compiled from source) not very customizable commpared to the
competition but i want a ftpd i can run and forget about, and this is

Re: DHCP problem....

1999-10-13 Thread aphro
sounds like a DNS issue, run a reverse lookup on the IP and see what comes
out. you can also add this line to your /etc/resolv.conf

domain yourdomain.com

that will cause the system to search the local domain when you ping a
hostname. for me if i pinged the host galactica, resolv.conf would
automatically try galactica.firetrail.com

but it looks more to be a DNS thing. the hostname may not be a valid
(Domain Name) host. that can be checked by trying to resolve the full
host.domain.com. if it resolves the problem is on the client machine(the
/etc/resolv.conf shit)

Re: Netscape 4.71 Is Rock Solid & Fast!

1999-10-13 Thread aphro
i have no complaints about netscape either. Sure it can crash..lockup.
But it has never..once.. brought down the system. never brought down X
either.

i don't care if an app crashes, as long as it doesn't take anything else
down with it. NT does it to me all thje time..doing normal things then
BAM! thats the kinda crash that REALLY pisses me off.

Re: Multiple accesses to /dev/dsp

1999-10-13 Thread aphro
i may be wrong but i think the esound daemon does this, not though in the
way you say.

i believe, apps send the output of the audio to the daemon and the daemon
opens /dev/dsp and outputs it there. any number of apps can talk to the
daemon and the daemon can/will output sound from multiple sources.

i've never used it just read bits about it, i could be wrong :)

i'm just gonna --force it and hope it works ..ive had problems like this
in the past but i figure i should report it this time. both packages i
*just* downloaded offa debian.org for slink.

also, can someone tell me quick how to change pine's reply-to feature? it
still uses my username i noticed. i want reply-to to go to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (using pine 4.05 about to upgrade to 4.20) but it
still wants to go to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if i change the domain.

Canary 720653 = aff0d died in procedure tcapterminalinfo

1999-10-14 Thread aphro
It's not a serious problem, but it is curious as it only happens on one of
my servers, none of the others. It seems the terminal type is not set
properly when a user logs in and if its not a compadible terminal type
pine crashes:

$ pine
Canary 720653 = aff0d died in procedure tcapterminalinfo.
 Segmentation
fault

---
On my other machines if the terminal type is wrong it will just say
unknown terminal type (whatever term is being used) and exit cleanly. not
on this machine though. Currently running pine 4.20 but it happened on
4.05 too (both compiled from the source distro) i have 4 Debian slink
machines and this is the only one that has this prob, so i figure its
something other then pine causing this problem. any ideas ?? btw, if i
export TERM=vt100 pine loads fine(which is why its not that
serious:)) ) but still would like to fix it so it at least responds like
the other systems.

Re: kernel 2.2.10 patch to UDMA66 ?

1999-10-14 Thread aphro
i read in the kernel mailing list that UDMA66 isn't possible in the linux
kernel yet. even with a patch its bound to cause lockups.

http://kt.linuxcare.com/kt19990927_36.html#12

"You can not currently use the second ATA-66 channel under Linux. Unless
you have a rabbit in the hat to register/service/handle the interrupt
assignment to pin B for the second channel, it will lockup regardless. The
interrupt is not serviced correctly. This will be on all mainboards that
have native onboard support."

security flaws in proftpd/wuftpd ?

1999-10-16 Thread aphro
i find it very suprising that there is not even a peep from debian
developers about the massive security holes in proftpd and the minor ones
in wu.ftpd ..virtually all the other distros announced. even if there is

unless the version(s) of proftpd in debian are safe? i read a post that
talked about flaws in the very design of it, making it secure would
require almost an entire re-write of the whole package.

i posted to debian-user a few weeks back askin for help with this issue

ipop3d - best way to run it?

1999-10-18 Thread aphro
ive been running ipop3d for about a year inside inetd. and it gets a lot
of connections, i want to minimize inetd's usage is there another
(good/tested) thing out there i could use? i know of xinetd but the best
of course for me at least seems to be being able to run a POP3 server
stand alone. i dont use tcp_wrappers i favor ipfwadm above them, so ..any
suggestions on how better to have ipop3d run ? it gets about..it seems to
get about 5-8 connections a minute. i guess its not a lot but it looks
like it is when im wathcin the logs :)

any ideas would be appreciated!@

Re: Linux not booting

1999-10-18 Thread aphro
ive had similar probs like that, usually for me it ended up being a bad
rescue disk, and/or lilo got curropted somehow (reinstalling lilo fixed it
for me). some kernels used to crash for me at that point(2.1.xx), so
reinstalling the kernel may help too.(or in my case with the crashes
downgrading kernels)

Re: apache + cgi

1999-10-19 Thread aphro
usually i just kill apache, set the ulimit (ulimit -u 40) and restart
apache. you could prob do this in the rc script too. i'll check out the
rlimit directives, but that sounds like an apache thing. i feel safer
with a system level limiter. and kernel patches i have applied ensure
they are enforced (better) then that of a 'stock' kernel. (using
2.0.36+securelinux patch, same kernel for the past year).

that should use the tulip driver. all cards based on the DECchip
21040/21041/21140 are tulip series chips. of course maybe 2114 is not the
same as 21140 if its not then sorry :) (got that info from the help
section of the 2.0.36 configuration)

btw eth0 will not be in /dev so dont be suprised if you don't see it! i
have 2 machines with tulip chipsets(no idea what brand/model) workin
great. but my kernels are 2.0.36 compiled from source.

Re: where is my memory going?

1999-10-20 Thread aphro
its supposed to. i'd stick with 2.2.10 unless there is something specific
in the newer ones you want. in my experience 2.2.10 is BY FAR the best
2.2.x kernel(although i never tried a few, missed .3 .4 .6 .7 ..)

the reason(i read it, could be wrong)for the problems in 2.2.11 -.12 is
there was a large number of fixes backported to 2.2.11 which introduced a
lot of new problems(why do this in a stable kernel?! ack) and theyve been
working on ironing o ut the bugs ever since. hopefully 2.2.13 is as
stable as 2.2.10

rtl8139 in slink?

1999-10-21 Thread aphro
curious as to why there was no realtek 8139 driver included in slink. and
it doesnt appear as an option in the kernel that slink comes with (2.2.12
currently -- using the CD from the new O'reilley book) even tho the
rtl8139.c file is there(it failed to compile as a module for some reason)

gonna try again with the 2.0.36, hope i can get the NIC working the only
other machine i got has no floppy drive. dont want to burn a cd with only
10mb on it :/

rtl8139 in slink(again)

1999-10-21 Thread aphro
2.0.36 kernel works great. (has a rtl8139 module)

i wish i knew why O'Reilley (sp?) chose 2.2.12 to be the default
kernel..the other 2.1r3 slink cd i have (burned from downloaded
ISO) defaults to 2.0.36(i believe)

btw besides this minor hiccup that book/cd combo rules. even tho i know
debian pretty good..its still a very interesting book, and the CD is the
most "stable" ive had thus far, their mastering process must be much
higher quality then the other stuff i've seen. did not get 1 curropted
file, not 1 I/O error..nothing! was amazed and happy :))

Re: How can I find specs on my monitor?

1999-10-22 Thread aphro
depending on the monitor, you may be able to get the specs from
www.monitorworld.com they got specs on over 2000 monitors but i did not
see that model# ..they got names instead (e.g. Dell graphics performance
16c)

or contact dell. or depending on your monitor(mine does - Princeton
E0500) if u run the monitor out of spec, it'll show you the range of
frequencies it supports. Or you can try to run XF86Setup, and play the
guessing game until you find a configuration that you think is acceptable,
and tweak it later.

Re: pinging a domain name

1999-10-22 Thread aphro
add the DNS servers to /etc/resolv.conf

e.g.
nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 5.6.7.8

to find your isp's name servers ask them or do a WHOIS on their
domain. test it by using the nslookup utility (nslookup www.debian.org
for ex.)

Re: X Dacspeed

1999-10-22 Thread aphro
DAC speed is related to the VIDEO card only. it just defines how fas the
video card can draw to the analog output at the specific refresh
rates(somewhere along those lines) it is different from the refresh rate
on the monitor. even if a videocard has a 350Mhz DAC it should still run
fine on a 5 year old 14" monitor, just means that the 350Mhz dac won't be
used to it's full potential

oh, in that case ...

it may be easier to make a dos boot disk, and download ntfsdos
(www.ntinternals.com i believe) to recover the data. i havent seen a

Re: FTP and telnet

1999-10-23 Thread aphro
check to see if there is anything in /etc/hosts.deny i think debian
defaults to denying everyone access (could be wrong)

then either add your ips to /etc/hosts.allow, comment out the
lines(reccomended) in hosts.deny (tweak it later) or rm hosts.deny

hosts.allow/deny easiest way to add your stuff:

ALL : 1.2.3.4 1.2.3.

where 1.2.3.4 would be a full IP and 1.2.3. would be a class C block of
addreses, this is different from firewalling where to do a class C you
would do 1.2.3.0.(i get the 2 confused a lot).

Re: c++ messed up

1999-10-23 Thread aphro
(re)install libstdc++ ??

run ldconfig -v | grep libcstc++ to make sure its loaded if its installed,
if not add the path to it to /etc/ld.so.conf or to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH
variable. (there may be a better way to do this but thats how i do it and
it works pretty good for me)

my system (slink):

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /stuff/incoming] ldconfig -v | grep libstdc++
libstdc++.so.27 => libstdc++.so.27.2.1
libstdc++.so.27 => libstdc++.so.27.2.1

libstdc++-libc6.0-1.so.2 => libstdc++-2-libc6.0-1-2.9.0.so
libstdc++.so.27 => libstdc++.so.27.2.1
libstdc++.so.2.7.2 => libstdc++.so.2.7.2.8
libstdc++.so.2.8 => libstdc++.so.2.8.0

yeah its ugly, yours will probably be a lot cleaner :)

not sure if debian's sendmail includes the legal warning on connection but
i had a LOT OF PROBLEMS with that on outlook. that piece of shit would
just dump crap to the SMTP server without looking for a response then puke
when it didnt work right. i.e. it would try to send mail before the
server even ack'd it's hello.

to fix it i had to turn off the legal notice. this may be fixed in
outlook now as i had this prob 6+ months ago.

Re: More sound problems...

1999-10-25 Thread aphro
you may not be able to get sound because there is not enough free memory
below 16MB for the dma buffer.

in more recent 2.2.x kernels you gotta enable the persistant DMA buffers
in sound config and it will reserve the memory at boot. it may not solve
this problem, but its an idea :)

1999-10-26 Thread aphro
you have to use redhat to use 2.2 ? i've been using slink since around
kernel 2.1.90 (used slackware before that). i heard redhat was crap, the
closest i've ever gotten to a 'redhat' system was linuxppc (which i
couldnt get installed). nothin stoppin you from running 2.2 on
slink. although i demand 2.0.36-.38 for my servers i run 2.2.10 on my home
machine, runs great(although this BP6 is the biggest piece of shit ive

check your ulimits (ulimit -a) i get that error because my ulimits are
quite strict and when i exceed the limits it prevents me from doing so and
pukes with that error. currently i have ulimit's for memory set at
24,000kB for virtual memory and 12,000kB for memory.

you also could be out of memory(doubtful depending on how much swap u

Re: Can't get seconf NIC to work

1999-10-26 Thread aphro
did u try to compile the NIC driver static into the kernel, i got 2
machines that use tulip(although on 2.0.36) and i try to avoid modules at
all costs. the only thing that get modularized for me are stuff thats 3rd
party and not included w/the kernel. if its a server, there are modules
out there that help maintain root access for an attacker and cloak his
activities. so it's good practice not to use modules unless you really
need em. (with ethernet is there any reason you'd unload the driver? i
have never had a reason to). also 2.2.9 isnt the best kernel i had probs
with it, 2.2.10 is great though. 2.2.11-.12 aren't too good(memory leaks,
other minor bugs due to backported fixes in .11 2.2.13 not sure about
havent tried it yet)

as for the route, the route command isn't needed for 2.2 it will
automatically add it for you(you can add it anways with that command u
gave). i see the route command for u failed, did you have a eth1
interface at the time you issued it?

Re: Fw: help for pointers

1999-10-26 Thread aphro
you can use weblogs.. in apache i use this:

CustomLog /path/to/www-access.log combined

so a virtual host directive (for me) looks like:

ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /users/virtual/aphroland.org
ServerName www.aphroland.org
ErrorLog /users/virtual/aphroland.org/www-error.log
CustomLog /users/virtual/aphroland.org/www-access.log combined

which outputs very detailed information in the logs:

141.64.14.110 - - [26/Oct/1999:07:16:10 -0700] "GET
/linuxbanners/linux12.gif HTTP/1.1" 200 14515
"http://yahoo.aphroland.org/OperatingSystems/Windows/WindowsCE/"; "Mozilla/4.0
(compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows NT)"

if you want to use this for bandwidth tracking, you may want to place the
logs in a directory that the user can't access so they can't delete em
:) a better solution, but does nto appear to work for virtual hosts, is
ipac, the IP accounting package, i could onnly get it to work on physical
interfaces though (like eth0 not eth0:1) i may of had broken IPAC rules
though i didn't play with it for long.

after you set the logs up you can setup a stats program like webalizer to
analize the logs and output html (like http://webstats.aphroland.org)

hope this helps!

Re: connection cost monitor anyone?

1999-10-26 Thread aphro
i saw this recently on freshmeat:

http://www.freshmeat.net/appindex/1999/03/16/921605259.html

pppcosts is a small utility that calculates and displays the time (and
phone costs) you have been online using a modem or ISDN ppp
connection. The time and costs are saved, so that you can use pppcosts to
keep track of you monthly phone costs. Cost files for many phone companies
are included. If your phone company isn't on the list, then you can create
a costfile on your own, which is very easy.

there is 1-2 other such utils on freshmeat, check there for the links.

port/protocol. a properly firewalled port will time out when a connection
is attampted. as for IGMP i dont think that is even enabled in the kernel
is it ?? thought only tcp/udp and icmp by default. firewalling icmp was
for me, kidna complicated, as there are many types of icmp. i ended up
blocking icmp type 8, which appears to block pings, but allow
traceroutes. some sample rules from my configuration(linux 2.0, ipfwadm)

#caught portscanning on 9-11-99
/sbin/ipfwadm -Ia deny -P all -S 131.123.46.150 -D 0.0.0.0/0
/sbin/ipfwadm -Ia deny -P all -S 209.251.178.30 -D 0.0.0.0/0
#caught portscanning on 9-12-99
/sbin/ipfwadm -Ia deny -P all -S 207.108.153.229 -D 0.0.0.0/0
/sbin/ipfwadm -I -P icmp -a reject -S 0.0.0.0/0 8
# lots of connections to DNS 9-26-99
/sbin/ipfwadm -Ia deny -P all -S 216.32.68.11 -D 0.0.0.0/0
/sbin/ipfwadm -Ia deny -P all -S 209.67.78.202 -D 0.0.0.0/0

you could block everyone on all supported protocols(with the -P all
flag) and allow each ip/protocol ..would be a lot of work i think but it'd
be possible(depending on what u want to be allowed in)

i also got telnet firewalled

/sbin/ipfwadm -Ia deny -P tcp -S 0.0.0.0/0 -D 0.0.0.0/0 23

if you telnet to me, it will time out(my ip is 208.222.179.31) if it
doesn't i will shit my pants, either that or you're comming from inside my
subnets :)

Re: pop3d

did u install the source version ? (dont know if debian has a binary for
it??) if you compiled from source make sure to enable shadow support(the
right kind of shadow there are 3-4-5 different ways to retrieve encrypted
passwords)

Re: Compiling proftpd from potato in a slink box

1999-10-26 Thread aphro
sorta off subject but proftpd had some pretty serious security flaws in
it, and i dont think it would be advisable to use on a unprotected
system(non firewalled). those flaws were fixed but there are many more
potential problems as the base code has some severe security
problems. wu-ftpd has similar problems a recent CERT alert was sent out
about a current version of wu-ftpd. I use the OpenBSD ftpd v0.2.2
(?) compiled from source. its a very basic ftpd, and for me, works great.

if you don't care about security or your system is already safe..then
forget what i just said :)

Re: x windows

1999-10-26 Thread aphro
for the s3 virge the server would be XF86_S3V. what is the other card's
chipset?? might be best to try to yank out the other card, and use the
onboard S3 Virge, run XF86Setup, choose S3 Virge, set the resolution, and
the color depth .. click on done(i think thats the name of the button) it
will test it, sit back and pray it works, if it does, save the config and
exit, then you can 'startx'

Re: any need to upgrade kernel

1999-10-27 Thread aphro
depends ..

if your running SMP you may want to upgrade
if you want access to NTFS drives you may want to upgrade
if you use a TV card you may want to upgrade

2.2 provides some pretty good overall perforamnce boosters, but its clear
to me its still not really stable yet..i'm holding off on 2.2 on my
servers till at least 2.4 is out. my dual processor server is still
running 2.0 even. 2.2.10 has prooved to be a great kernel for
me. haven't seen any reports about adverse effects when using 2.2.13 as
of yet .. if your not planning on upgrading/changing your hardware(to
something that may only be supported in kernel 2.2/2.3/2.4) i'd suggest to
stay with 2.0.
