network connection fails after setup
Howdy! I set up sarge with kernel 2.4. This setup was done via a startup cd and http. During setup files were downloaded with no problem. After the setup was complete, I have no internet or network connection. Any suggestions for a fix? TIA, Roger __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - 250MB free storage. Do more. Onboard Graphics Problem
Hello: I am trying to get Sarge installed, but am having difficulties with the video. The output is pixelated and the only resolution setting available is 640X480. lspci reports that the graphics card is: :00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82810E DC-133 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 03). The monitor is an NEC Multisync II. The refresh rates are set according to monitorworld.com specs. The box is a pieced-together-from-scraps machine based around a Compaq with a 633 MHZ Celeron Thanks for any assistance... Roger

Sarge - no sound
I just installed Sarge on a desktop with a celeron 633. It is installed with the 2.4.x kernel. I run KDE. I have no sound. I am considering moving to a 2.6 kernel and using ALSA. Any recommendations? Should I stick with the current kernel and try to get the sound working? Or move to ALSA, then get the sound working (assuming that sound is still an issue after an update)? Thanks for any help
Newbie: How-to Disable onboard sound
Hello: I am trying to get ALSA to use an Ensonic 1371 sound card instead of the onboard card. I cannot find a way to disable the onboard card in the bios. Also, I want to use Audacity, but get errors when it starts. any suggestions? If you need more info, let me know what you need and how I can find it, and I will post it.

It doesn't have a synth built in, and I want to set up Rosegarden later. I don't want to deal with software synth when I do. So, now I am trying to get the onboard sound to work with Audacity. Here is the error I get when I start from the command line: "There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer. You will not be able to play or record audio. Error:Host error." Let me know what else I can post that may help. Thanks
Sound - again, I know
I cannot get my sound to work correctly. System sounds work. I can play mp3's with Kaboodle. My problem is that I cannot get sound-in to work. I have a cassette player attached to my line in, and try to record using Audacity. Audacity gets no input and nothing is sent to the speakers. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? I am a newbie, so if I need to post something from a file to give you more info, let me know. Roger

broken kdm/kde
Hello. I am running Sarge, kernel 2.6.7. I installed Rosegarden, which has a lot of dependencies and makes lots of changes to my system. After the install, I have a different log in screen for kde. This log in has a drop-down which allows me to log in to other window managers (I think that is the right term). However, after typing in my creds, when I hit enter or click on 'log in', nothing happens. I can still log in through the console; if I do so and enter 'startx' the system hangs before it gets to the log in screen. Can anyone offer assistance? TIA Roger

Re: iPodder wont start
sarge includes wxpython 2.4. that should work. if you search (e.g. insynaptic) for 'wx' you should find a result (called something like wxpython or python-wxgtk) OK. Now I get : basement:/usr/bin# iPodder Traceback (most recent call last): File "iPodderGui.py", line 41, in ? import gui.iPodderWindows File "/opt/iPodder/gui/iPodderWindows.py", line 21, in ? import listctrl as listmix File "/opt/iPodder/gui/listctrl.py", line 296, in ? EVT_DOPOPUPMENU = wx.PyEventBinder(wxEVT_DOPOPUPMENU, 0) AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'PyEventBinder' Ar...why can this not be more straightforward?? What do I need to do now?? Thanks. Roger

I received a long errormessage including "Error while initializing the sounddriver: device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device)." I then installed alsa-base (&alsa-utils), attempted to select ALSA as the audiodevice again, and received the same message. Not surewhat to do at this point. __Yahoo! Re: mp3 player/network
If the mp3s are on a shared folder on the xp box you should be able to mount that on a debian system with samba and play them from there with just about any mp3 player OK. I have a newbie question. How do I mount the shared folder? Roger

Re: Audio player error (amarok)
If you are running 2.4, then I think that you need to install alsa-modules-2.4.27-2-686 . The modules are built-in to the 2.6 kernels.--Best,Marc Marc is correct. I had the same problem. With the 2.4 kernel you must find the correct modules and load them. I never did get ALSA to work properly under the 2.4 kernel. So, I am not the right person to help further. I solved my problems by moving to the 2.6 kernel, which, as Marc said, has the modules built in. Roger
