Problem building from package sources

Hello:

Any time that I try to install software from source files, I get the foillowing error when I type ./configure:

checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

I am a newbie and am only following instructions. I don't know what I am doing.....
