I believe that he was giving you another option that
would partition your disk using something other than
FIPS. I have used the Mandrake practitioner to
partition a disk and it works great, its a nice GUI
front end and after you write the table you can remove
the Mandrake disk and install your Knoppix.
My 2 cents worth.

This might be totally wacked, but if you need to get
to your modem to configure it, open a browser and for
the url put in 192.168.1.1 , then on the next screen
it will ask you for a user name and password, don't
worry about the user name the pass word is Admin or
admin, I'm not sure on the capitolazition. Then you
will see a new screen with different tabs across the
top to set up the modem.

Haven't you ever done a dselect update and then a
apt-get -u upgrade and found that you have 30 or some
large number of packages that are not going to be
installed? When that happens, I have done the apt-get
dist-upgrade and it will install a lot of packages
that were not going to be installed during a normal
upgrade... I'm running testing in case your curious.

Hi all,
I'm running Testing on a PII 350 and attempted to do

My questions is why is it trying to remove the

have lost my "Desktop" and only had text only mode?

The following NEW packages will be installed:

Why not remove the package and clean up your apt cache
with apt-get claen?? Then you can re-download it and
apt will not complain.

CRASHING HARD DRIVE

Hi All,
I know that this has been discussed before so I
apologize for asking again. I believe that my hard
drive is on its last leg. Can I do a quick and dirty
bzip2 / and will that bzip2 by drive so that I can
copy it to another, then do the bunzip2? I'm looking
for a easy solution, I can re-install, that's not a
problem, I just hate to loose some programs that I
have installed.
Thanks in advance.

If I wanted to do that upgrade I would change the
stable to unstable on each of the deb and src lines.
Then do a dselect update, then a apt-get dist-upgrade
and wait for the 200+ packages to download and
install.

I'm a quasi newbie to Debian also. I would reccommend
that you learn all about apt-get. This is a Really
Powerful Tool. To find if there is a Debian program
of what you want to install do either a dselect update
or a apt-get update. Then you can do a apt-cache
search and that will show you all of
the programs with that name in them. To find out what
the program does you can do a apt-cache show and that will give you a description of the
program. After you find the program that you want to
install do a apt-get install and that
should install the program and the required
dependencies if any are required.

WindowMaker Menu Crazies

Hi all,
I'm running unstable with the 2.4.19 kernel using
Window Maker.
I've installed the mplayer-686.deb and when I select
the Mplayer from the menu is does not open. If I open
a terminal and type mplayer in the terminal Mplayer
will open. I have looked at
/etc/X11/WindowMaker/menu.hook and the Mplayer command
is EXEC /usr/bin/mplayer -gui. The /etc/mplayer.conf
has the gui=yes . I guess what I need to know is how
do I change the menu to be EXEC /usr/bin/mplayer ?
Appreciate the help.

In your etc/lilo.conf you need to add to the
append="apm=on" After you make that entry you need to
type lilo in the terminal to maje sure that you update
the lilo.conf file. Then when you power down your
system it should turn off. I always use as su
'shutdown -h now'

libc6 install problems HELP Please

Hi All,
I was attempting to install mplayer and one of its
depends was libpostproc0 which had a depend of libc6.
I know I should learn how to make a deb from source.
Anyway I did a apt-get install libc6 from unstable and
this is what I get once the download is complete. The
three packages it is talking about is libc6 libc6-dev

This is for closure and in case someone else has
this problem in the future.
I did a search on google for
libc6_2.2.5-14.3.i386.deb. Downloaded that plus the
libc6-dev and the locales, all the same 2.2.5-14.3.
Did a dpkg -i and it replaced the libc6_2.3... with
the 2.2.5...
Everything appears to be normal now.

To search for a specific package you can do a
apt-cache search
Or you do a dpkg --list |more that will list all of
the packages that you have one page at a time.

Simon,
From what you just said, you need to do a apt-get
install apmd . Then from what I see you did not run
lilo after you changed it so I would open lilo.conf in
your favorite editor, make sure that append="apm=on"
is there, save it and then run lilo.
If you then do shutdown -r now as su or root the
system will reboot. The next time that you shutdown
your laptop, it should shutdown correctly.
If memory serves me correctly, I did not have to
load a apm configured kernel on my system for this
procedure to work.

Alan,
I assume that you placed those gnome2.2 lines in
your sources.list. If you want to keep the gnome2.2
updating to the current release then leave the sources
list the way it is. If you just want to stay with
stable then all you need to do is add a # as the first
charcter in your gnome2.2 lines in your sources.list
and then all you need to do is apt-get update &&
apt-get -u upgrade. The reason that I use th e-u
option is that I have to agree with what is going to
be upgraded, i.e. its not a automatic upgrade.

Since this is the first that I saw this, have you
tried to add your sound driver to /etc/modules . In my
/etc/modules I have ac97_codec, soundcore, pci-scan,
tulip all on their own line. That causes those modules
to load at boot up.

USB support?

2001-07-25 Thread d

Excuse me but I am just a LURKER, two questions if I may?

#1. Is there USB support for NETWORKING in Linux? I think there is
something that is to the NEGATIVE that I read but do NOT remember where.

#2. With all of the messages on this 'ls' where do any of you find the time
to do anything for yourselves? I spend most of the day reading, just the
selected ones that may interest me, or is it just that I am such a NEWBIE
that I feel all messages should be read so I may learn as much as possible
and go into OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD!
OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD! OVERLOAD! , etcetera. I think you get the idea.

A NEWBIE inquiry......

2001-07-26 Thread d
Hey folks, this is the LURKER again with an inquiry on installs on the same
drive. I purchased a copy of "Mandrakesoft™'s Linux® Mandrake©" v7.0/w 3
CD's (installation disc #1, source disc #2 and extra #3) about a year
ago. To make a long story longer, NOT really, there were some major
problems I had to deal with here and had to put it to one side. Well about
2 weeks ago I saw a copy of "SAMS Installing Debian GNU/Linux®" with one CD
v2.1. Could NOT pass this up so I purchased it to learn as much as
possible about these two systems.

I am running Windows SE 98+! V4.10.a on a PCChips PC100 MBD/w AMD K6 II
3D 400meg, 163.48meg RAM, USR 56k INT MDM plus a PCTEL WinModem (that is
NOT being used at this time), two 8.4 gig IDE H/D's. One is setup to run
WinBlows 98 the other I have set to 7 partitions, three for Debian v2.1 and
three for Mandrake v7.0, there are 6 of them the other is just FREE
SPACE. Hope to be able to access that from which ever one needs added space.

Now my question is what would I have to do to set these up so I can access
one from the other? I can now access the WinBlows from Mandrake, have NOT
set things so I can do that from Deb just yet. The other is how can I get
both of them to acknowledge my USR MDM, neither one will recognize it and
MD never has even from my first install? I know there are HOWTO's and many
other MAN pages and various other thingys, I spend most of a day just
attempting to keep up with these messages. THE END. This has gone on far
enough, I am going to give you the chance to do what most people DREAM of
being able to do, TELL ME WHERE TO GO to reach my END.

ONE more for the ROAD, please.where is a GOOD place for a NEWBIE that
is NOT a programmer nor very familiar with UNIX or Linux to learn how to
get started. I Know READ, READ, READ, etcetera, at 61 I do NOT have that
much time left to do all of that.

TIA,

don Hodges

the info and will be testing this out over the weakend (BAG!). Again, to
make a short story longer, from what I have seen and read in most of these
messages the ones asking these questions for assistance are NOT the same
type of NEWBIE that I am classified. Most are really up on this CPUing
thingy, as for my self well lets just say I am a project in work or is it a
work in progress? You get the pic any way.

Per usual here is one for the ROAD, at least this "debian-user" mail group
seem to be a little more on the sympathetic side and are handing all
requests for assistance with Professionalism and a REAL desire to HELP. I
would take off my HAT to you but I do NOT own any so this will have to do
for now.

Again a BIG Thank You to one and all, even those other NEWBIES for asking
questions I did NOT know how to word.

TIA,

don Hodges

Deb-Newby: Read HOWTO's?

2001-08-01 Thread d
LURKER here again, what is used to read the HOWTO files? All of the ones I
have on my system are **.gz, I know that means compressed. What to use
to uncompress? When I used to work on UNIX systems you used a command
called "compress" with different switches to do that or to uncompress.

As usual one for the road, if those that are NOT a user nor a programmer
would put in the "Subject" some thing like what I have installed would help
MOA find the ones with the 'HOLD MY HAND' instructions and save me and I am
sure many others much time searching for thingys that could be useful to me/us.

Deb-Newby: Read HOWTO's?

2001-08-02 Thread d
LURKER here again. In the Configure-HOWTO file the instructions are
written by a person that uses RH and the suggestions will NOT work for
Deb. I know I am using a very OLD version of Deb v2.1 but that is what is
on my CD I have and that is much easier to work with when if I have a
problem with my modifications of some of the files, I have to reinstall it
is simpler for me to use this CD instead of having to compile (which I am
NOT familiar with) a new kernel, vmlinz, or what ever is needed. Can I
just find a HOWTO on Configuring the different files that is for DEB?

Finally got to my question. BAG!!

dhcp-client help

2001-11-19 Thread D.
Hi all,
  I have installed dhcp-client.
  My /etc/network/interfaces is:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
I have made the files in /etc/network/ifup and
ifdown and they each have in them eth0. I have a
/var/dhcp/dhclient.leases. The /etc/resolv.conf is
there and once I get connected it is right.
My problem is that my system will not get a ip
address by itself. I have DHCP at work and home.
I have to do dhclient eth0 to get connected.
I have searched everywhere that I can think of for a
answer, to no avail.
What am I missing, any and all help is appreciated.

Re: dhcp-client help

2001-11-20 Thread D.
Thanks for the help on this. This is what my
/etc/network/interface looks like now
auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
When I did the auto eth0 on the same line I got the
error unable to configure auto=auto. When I did it in
a seperate line it would not configure.
Anyway it now works at my office, just need to check
it at home, but it should work there also.
Thanks again.

Re: compiling a NIC driver

2001-11-29 Thread D.
Paul,
I don't know if you resolved this yet or not. I
haven't seen any responses to your initial email. I
have a nic card that uses the tulip driver and had to
compile the driver also. I had the same problem i.e.
could not find modversions.h . Here is something that
I found on scyld.com that resolved the modversion.h
problem. After you type the compile command add this
on the same line "-I/usr/src/linux/include -include
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h" .
Hope this helps.

If you go to the www.netgear.com and search around a
little bit you will find a linux driver for your nic
card in .zip form. When you open it you will see a
readme on how to compile the driver. I believe that
you also need the kernel-headers for the kernel that
your using.

Re: Computer won't power off

2001-11-30 Thread D.
dman,
Thanks for this info. I was previously using the
potato kernel 2.2.? and did the "apm=on" in lilo.conf
and when I gave it a shutdown it shutdown. Then I
moved up to hernel 2.4.12 and I had to manually
shutdown my laptop, the "apm=on" was still in
lilo.conf so I was stumped. As you said inset apm
into /etc/modules and it will work that is the step I
forgot. Did that and now it works thanks for the
information.

Re: Movie players in certain Linuxes , O God !

There is a .deb file for mplayer. You need to add
libasound2 from unstable and also liblircclient0,
libmud0 and libsdl1.2debian from testing. Then add
this to your /etc/apt/sources.list do a apt-get update
apt-get install mplayer-686 mplayer-fonts

apt-get lists

2001-12-11 Thread D.
Whenever you do a apt-get update there is a new list
generated, I assume, made in the /var/lib/apt/lists
folder. After awhile this folder can grow to be kinda
large. Would there be a problem deleting some of these
old lists? Currently on my laptop there are 35 lists
in that folder and I know that there are more then 35
on my desktop.
I think that if possible it would be nice to have
some sort of script/program that would limit that
folder to a reasonable number of lists. Just a idea.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

Re: A package that does not want to die

2001-12-12 Thread D.
I would suggest doing a dpkg --list |more and see if
the package is listed. If not then you might have
come configuration files still on your system that
were not removed from your last removal. To remove
these I would do a apt-get -purge . Then I
would do the apt-get -remove Then you can
reinstall if you want the program installed.

how much disk space you have like Mandrake and then

Re: Partitioning a working NTFS drive

2002-02-14 Thread D.
I was in the same position except I had WINME on the
drive. Do a search on www.google.com and search for
FIPS . That is a non-distructive partitioner. If
memory serves me correctly there is a lot of good
information on the web page that you download FIPD
from.
After you do the partition you can do a normal install
of Debian.
Hope this helps.

Alex therre are at least two versions of Xfree on
Woody, which Xfree are you using. I know when I

I had to download the xserver seperately. And if your

Scott,
You can edit /etc/apt/sources.list and change the
entries from stable to woody (on teh first three

it is required for configuring the packages?
  Yes I reinstalled 2.2.r2.

riddle me this??

2001-10-22 Thread D.
I was looking at updating a Potato 2.2.r3 running
kernel 2.4.9 (from Bunks page) to Woody. Following
this list I have noticed all of the problems woth x
font and the Xserver's. I did a apt-get update
pointing to the testing and then did a apt-get -u
dist-upgrade and looked at the list of packages to be
changed.
The following packages were to be removed: This is a
partial list, task-x-window-system-core xbase-clients
xf86setup xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi xfonts-base
xfonts-cjk xfonts-cyrillic xfonts-scalable. The only
packages that I see that will replace these are
xfonts-pex xfree86-common.
From what I see, if I would have continued with the
dist-upgrade I would not have any fonts available to
me, or does the xfont-pex replace all that is going to
be removed?
  Am i missing something?
I always appreciate the knowledge that is passed on.

Re: Sound...

2001-10-22 Thread D.
With Debian you have to give permission for the user
to use sound i.e. as su or root adduser
audio. With the maestro3 on my laptop I also had to
make sure that the ac97_core.o driver was available.
The way that I did it was add maestro3 and ac97_core
to my /etc/modules .

The ac97_core is another driver that the maestro3
uses. I can't answer your question on the esound

player sounds good considering the speakers on a

I looked in /var/log at all of the files there and
was unable to retreave the information that you
needed, but I did a apt-get -u upgrade and it hung
again at balsa and was able to extract this
information.
Preparing to replace balsa 0.6.0-1.1. using
...(balsa-0.9.8-1.0.pre5-1_i386.deb
unpacking replacement balsa
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/balsa-0.9.8-1.0.pre5-1_i386.deb--unpack):
trying to overwrite
'/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-balsa2.png' Which is also in
package gnome-panel-data.
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal
(Brokenpipe)
When I did the apt-get -u upgrade I also got the
same type of error message for eeyes. I made a
assumption, I know bad thing, and did a apt-get
install gnome-panel-data. This installed and the
installation continued without any errors.
Now I think that all I need to do is work the
x-window-system, xbase and the font issues and I might
have a Debian Woody running on my Laptop.
Hope this is what you were looking for.
Thanks

Re: video card detection

2001-10-28 Thread D.
As with any software sometimes it will not detect all
hardware. I know on my Laptop I have the S3 Savage
and during initial installation this card was not
detected, I had to manually configure it. During that
process you will get to a data base of video cards and
it should be on that list. You need to know what
video card that you have, the vertical and horizonal
refresh rates, and the amount of video ram that you
have. If you go to the Debain site there is good
installation documentation available for your reading.

Re: Network config tool

2001-10-30 Thread D.
If memory serves me correctly, during the installation
of Potato at the point of inserting/selecting modules,
if your nic card is on the list and you select it,
when you exit that portation of the install it will
ask you if you want to configure your network. Saying
yes will start the process and the only question that
you need to answer is what is your Hostname? Then it
will ask you if you want the program to set up your
network automatically, saying yes will do this and if
the program is successful it will say congratulations
your network is set up.
What can be easier than that.

Re: XFree86 problem on Woody

2001-11-13 Thread D.
During the install did you notice if xserver-xfree86
was installed? If your unable to do dpkg-configure
xserver-xfree86 then xserver-xfree86 did not get
installed when you did the upgrade (that was my
problem). You can look in /var/cache/apt/archives and
see if that package is there, if not do a apt-get
install xserver-xfree86 then do the dpkg-configure and
see if you get your xfree4.4.? working.

Re: Laptop install, console screen small

2001-11-15 Thread D.
You can try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and
during that choose 1024x768 as the window size.. I'm
guess that you accepted the options that it provided
to you when you first did your setup. Or you can go
in an edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and in there add the
1024x768 option. That is the screen size that I use
on my HP Pavilion.

Tulip driver unresolved symbols

2001-09-28 Thread D.
Hi all
I have installed Potato 2.2.r2 on my HP Pavilion
N5450 Laptop and this system uses a Accton en2242 nic
card that uses the tulip driver. I know that I've
seen this discussed on this list but I am unable to
find it. I have downloaded the drivers for the card
and did a cp pci-scan.o tulip.o
lib/modules/2.2.18pre21/net. I then did a depmod -a
and got the unresolved symbols.
I had Mandrake installed Kerenel 2.4.3 on this
system and the nic worked right after installation. I
copied the drivers (tulip.o.gz and tulip_cb.o.gz) that
it was using but did not do anything with them, I
didn't know what to do with them.
I have searched the net and from what I have found,
I'm suspose to compile the driver, but all the
information I see is for the RedHat distro. To do
that I understand that I need the kernel-source for my
kernel, where can I get the source for 2.2.18pre21? I
also did a make xconfig and looked to see if tulip was
a option in the nic drivers in the kernel and did not
find it for 2.2.18pre21. Any and all help on this is
greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Don

LAPTOPS AND TWO DIFFERENT WORKPLACES (OT)

2001-10-04 Thread D.
Hi all,
The system administrator at work is a subcontract
employee. He is also the administrator at his
company. The company that I work for also has
employe's from his company working here and they
travel back and forth between companies and use their
M$ laptops at both sites. Here is the problem.. both
sites use M$ and my company has the DHCP set and the
other company doesn't, so when these people go to
their company they have to go and set the nic card up.
He asked me if I knew of a way to do this and I have
searched the web and came up dry... I think that a lot
of the people that are on this list are also very
knowledgable about M$ also. Is there a way to do this
with out setting his company up to use DHCP?
Thanks,
Appreciate all the help that I can pass on.

Re: Tulip driver unresolved symbols (UPDATE)

2001-10-04 Thread D.
Well in response to Does mine work the answer is No.
I have tried for a few days to get this going and
finally figured out that I did not have a eth0 device
it was a sit0. I tried and read everything that I
could and could not figure out a way to get the eth0.
I tried to compile the driver like the instructions
told me, but came up with the error that I did not
have a modverdion.h. I copied tulp.o and pci-scan.o to
the appropiate folder though. Then I did a apt-cache
search for pcmcia and found out that I did not have
the right kernel and was missing the pcmcia packages.
I installed those and still nothing. At this point I
was really frustrated and figured I'd go about this
from a different perspective. I installed a Distro
(Mandrake 8.0) that I knew that the tulip driver
worked in and was going to try and load Debian, but
leave the pcmcia stuff.. I'm not sure if I can really
do that, still investigating. (I saw something to this
effect in the last couple of days on the list) I ran
across a site today that I think has the answer to How
do I get a eth0. I think that if I do a ifconfig eth0
192.168.1.1 that might do the trick, This is a pure
guess though.
Have I given up on installing Debian on this Laptop,
No, The install went great its the Accton EN2242 nic
card thats giving me the problems, but I will get it.
  Any pointers from this rambling?
Thanks

Re: dual boot with Win 2000?

As a point of interest, When I used the same
configuration that you have for your Windows partation
"other=/dev/hda1" on a HP Pavilion 5450 my Windows Me
would not boot up.. It gave the error message that It
was missing the command.com file. When I realized
what was wrong I changed it to "other=/dev/hda2" and

Re: linux + winME

I have the same setup, Laptop with ME and wanted to
install Debian. What I did was first do a Scan disk
then did a defrag then I went to one of the Debian
mirror sites and downloaded a copy of FIPS and folowed
the README in FIPS. I was able to partation the drive
and not lose any data that was there, make a linux
partation and do the installation.
The only problem that I have had with the
installation was teh NIC card.
Hope this answers your question.

I'm running Woody with kernel 2.4.9 on my desktop,
with a Matrox video card. I changed my sources.list to
unstable and did a apt-get install xine-ui. Works
great using the Xv video driver and the oss audio
driver. I have watched a few .avi movies with it and
full screen is clear as a picture.
Just my two cents worth.

Re: OT: Rant

2002-01-16 Thread D.
I will go WAY out on the LIMB here and say, I have a
WordPerfect8.tar.bz2 that I will share with anyone
that wants it... If that's legal... I believe that I
downloaded it from the Peanut Linux web page. I have
not installed it on Debian so I can not say that it
will work.. My delima is how do I get it to anyone
that wants it, its 16.9M. I sit behind a Linksys
router to DSL and I have had problems DCC things to
people. I do not use ICQ but there is ICQ
capabilities in the house.
  Let me know.

On my Pavilion n5450 in order for me to get it to
shutdown with shutdown -h now I had added to lilo.conf
append="apm=on" and I also added to /etc/modules 'apm'
. That shuts down my system completely.
