I don't think that should be a problem any more in unstable, now that libfam0c102 provides libfam0. Unbootable FastTrak TX2 100
[[[ Please "Cc:" me, as I'm not subscribed to the list. ]]] I admit it. I'm spoiled. I have come to expect Linux setups to just "work", so when they don't I'm quite tenacious in trying to fix things. Currently, I'm trying to get an APPRO 1124i system (http://www.appro.com) to work using the Linux 2.4.18 native ataraid support. This PC Class server is using the Tyan Thunder K7 motherboard, dual AMD MP2400+ processors, 1GB DDRAM, and the Promise FastTrak TX2 100 PCI card. I have the 4 disk Array Configured in "Security" mode or Mirror/Stripe. I'm booting with LordSutch's Debian Woody 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel, which has ataraid support compiled in (yes, I know this is a Red Hat list). The machine boots successfully off of CD and recognizes the ataraid device correctly. I've been able to partition and format the ataraid device with a working Debian install. What I cannot seem to accomplish is to boot the system off this raid device: /dev/ataraid/d0. Grub simply won't ackowledge the ataraid device as useable and instead just lists the four physical drives as being available. lilo 22.2-3 installs into the MBR, but fails with "L 01 01 01 01...". lilo 22.5.4 installs, but instead fails at boot time with "L 99 99 99 99 99". Apparently something was fixed between 22.2 and 22.5 to allow lilo to see the device correctly, but now it doesn't seem to want to accept the detected geometry as correct. I've compared the geometry as reported by the Promise card at boot time with the geometry from the lilo diagnostic disk (compiled from 22.5.4 source), and they match perfectly. I have not touched the /dev/hd[e-h] devices as directed by the FAQ's, etc. I honestly don't know what else to do. I don't know if this problem is isolated to lilo or if it's influenced by what the initial kernel is reporting to lilo. Should I be upgrading the installation kernel to 2.4.20? 2.4.21-preX? Does the ataraid driver support the mirror/stripe configuration I'm using, or am I being naieve? Advice? Flames? Etc. -- Chad C. Walstrom <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 247 Gortner Hall Asst. USB Epson scanner problem
Greetings- I've been trying to move my scanner (an Epson 1640SU) from SCSI to USB in preparation for a new machine which will not have a SCSI card. Ethernet lockup
I have noticed a thread on this list around a week ago that dealt with the ethernet lockup with the Linux hme driver. There was a posting by Joshua Uziel that pointed to a patch to this driver. I'm new to Debian so my question may seem strange to some here, but I cannot see how to use this patch since the 2.4.18 kernel that comes with my 3.0_r1 installation seems to be monolithic, and vanilla kernel source does not build on my system. Problem: want x-window-system without xdm
I have installed x-window-system in order to use gnopernicus for gnome accessibility. But I do not want X to start at boot. I was advised to change my runlevel from 2 to 3 in my /etc/inittab but that did not solve my problem. finally I removed xdm using --ignore-dpendency=x-window-system. However, now apt-get won't let me upgrade or add packages; it just keeps complaining about how i should run 'apt-get -f install" because of the unmet dependencies. I am using debian unstable; in earlier distributions you could install x-window-system without xdm; I'm not sure when or why that changed. Is there anything I can do about this? thanks. hello geeks, i'm about to begin work at a new job. the shop is really chill, to such a degree that everyone hangs out on couches and beanbag chairs and works on laptops. this is awesome, but for one factor -- i can't type on a laptop for longer than about 20 minutes without severe wrist pain. this isn't usually a problem, as i have a desktop system at home and in the lab where i've been, and work on ergonomic keyboards (e.g., the Micro$oft Natural). what would be ideal for me i don't think exists yet, and google isn't helping. I would love to see a normal laptop, but with a keyboard whose two halves could pop up in the middle, and then rotate inwards to whatever degree the user wanted, kind of like [1], except built into a laptop, and without the numerical keypad, obviously. does such a thing exist? if not, could i build one myself somehow? how can i get whoever makes laptops to design one? could i patent it? (heh heh ...) whatever; i just want a laptop that I can type on ... any tips would be appreciated. Is there a trusted place to apt-get Netscape 7 or 7.01 or 7.02 in a debian package? cdrecord: behaves as if not suid root when it is, sorta.
Hi. I've used cdrecord lots of times, but I've just recently run into an odd problem. When I use cdrecord as a non-root user, I get warning messages that are not present if I use cdrecord as root: cdrecord: Operation not permitted. WARNING: Cannot set RR-scheduler cdrecord: Permission denied. WARNING: Cannot set priority using setpriority(). cdrecord: WARNING: This causes a high risk for buffer underruns. >From searching the web/newsgroups, I can see that this is fairly common -- cdrecord needs to be run as root, or as suid root. However, there are a few important differences. First, I *don't* also get the warning message of: cdrecord: Operation not permitted. WARNING: Cannot do mlockall(2). which usually comes with trying to run cdrecord as non-root and without suid root access. Second, cdrecord *does* proceed to the write -- it doesn't say: cdrecord: Read-only file system. Cannot open '/dev/cdrom'. Cannot open SCSI driver. cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root. and quit like it normally does if you try to run it as non-root and without suid root access. And finally, and most importantly, my cdrecord *is* suid root: stax:/usr/src-789> ls -al /usr/bin/cdrecord -rws--s---1 root cdrom 314476 May 14 05:28 /usr/bin/cdrecord* Other potentially useful info: stax:/usr/src-790> groups cmetzler cdrom floppy audio dip src video users stax:/usr/src-791> ls -al /dev/scd0 brw-rw1 root cdrom 11, 0 Aug 27 2002 /dev/scd0 stax:/usr/bin-805> dir /usr/bin/cdrdao -rwsr-xr-x1 root root 532292 Oct 15 2002 /usr/bin/cdrdao* Does anyone have a clue why I'm getting these warning messages? One more tip for dealing with Debian packages of custom kernels and other home-brewn 'Debianized' software: it is possible to maintain a local archive of Debian packages, on your hard disk, from which you can install packages with apt-get just like from a cd or an ftp site. If the directory you put such a local arhive in were /var/lib/deb you would have to specify it in /etc/apt/sources.list as deb file:/var/lib/ deb/ man dpkg-scanpackages provides more information on setting up a local Debian archive. It takes some trouble to add packages to (or remove them from) a local archive. In particular, after every addition or removal one has to run dpkg-scanpackages with the right parameters, and apt-get update, to update the list of available packages. I have automated this with two scripts and since then it has been very easy to work with my local Debian archive. Regards, Ben -- B.F.M. What I have done when I got messages like this was: trying an install of the packages that were reported to not going to be installed or to be not installable. Not in the expectation that they might nevertheless be installed, but to see what error messages that would generate. Generally, these say something about the cause of the 'uninstallibility'. If that cause was that the uninstallable packages depend on one or more other packages that were uninstallable, I repeated the procedure for those other packages. Up to now, I always pretty soon found some 'root cause' of the problem that could be solved by installing / upgrading / removing packages in the right sequence. But I admit I never had to do this during a dist-upgrade The chain of dependencies you will encounter when trying this method may be very long. Just try if no one offers you a better solution. It is not hard to have MAIL set in X sessions started by xdm, you can insert a statement like export MAIL=/var/mail/$LOGNAME in one of: /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession called by xdm to start the user's X session, calls /etc/X11/Xsession the general script to start an X session /home/*/.xsession each user's customization of an X session unless the more knowledgeable people I referred to before warn us that that is a bad idea. > and I'd also like to understand how it gets set normally when using > login -- e.g. is it read set in a startup script? I assume there's a > setting to say mail is in /var/mail/$USER. 'man login' tells me that login constructs MAIL from the information in /etc/passwd. Exactly how is not stated; my guess is that login appemds the user name of the user who has just logged in to the home directory of user 'mail', so that with the following lines in /etc/passwd mail:x:8:8:mail:/var/mail:/bin/sh ben:x:1001:100:Ben Kal,,,:/home/ben:/bin/bash for user ben MAIL is assigned the value /var/mail/ben > Secondly, is there a simple explanation of the boot and login process for > Debian? Something that explains the order of programs and scripts run. The boot process: I am afraid that a really *simple* explanantion would not add much to what you already know, while a valuable explanation would be quite a long story and requires knowledge of some details of your system, for instance what boot loader you use and whether your kernel uses the 'hotplug' facility or not. My advice is to study the documentation of your boot loader and search the web for descriptions of the boot process. I suppose there must be some. The login process: The man pages of - login - xdm - bash or tcsh or any other shell you use are pretty clear about what happens (mostly what startup scripts they execute) under what circumstances. Issues to be aware of are: - xdm replaces login but does not set up the environment in exactly the same way as login does, in particular it does not set MAIL as you have found - the shell of an X terminal is not a login shell (the user is already logged in through xdm) so the startup scripts for login shells, /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile in the case of bash, are not executed! This easily causes the environment of shells on virtual consoles to be radically different from the environment of shells in X terminals. - environment variables have to be set only once and are inherited by all processes that are children of the login shell or the X session, but things like aliases and shell options have to be set every time a shell is started. To ensure that: - the environment is the same in all shells - on startup shells do not read more startup scripts than necessary I did the following: - put all settings of environment variables in /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile - put all aliases and shell options in /etc/bash.bashrc and ~/.bahsrc - made /etc/profile source /etc/bash.bashrc - made ~/.bash_profile source ~/.bashrc - made ~/.xsession source both /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile, after setting an environment variable that to /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile signals that they have been sourced by ~/.xsession; in that case they do not need to source /etc/bash.bashrc resp. ~/.bashrc, and instead unset that environment variable. In common usage, kilo, mega etc. in the computer context refer to the power of 2 which is closest to the power of 10 to which they refer in decimal contexts. So a megabyte *is* 1048576 bytes, etc, and I don't think this usage is particularly likely to change. Of course, a megabyte is also 1024000 bytes, eg. when some program gives you an output of a figure quoted in kilobytes and you mentally shift it three places to the right to get the megabytes. If only Ug in his cave had counted on his fingers in binary, we'd never have had the problem... It is interesting that SCSI hard drive specs do not attempt to mislead you by exploiting this confusion. A gigabyte on a SCSI drive is a real, honest, binary-context, 2^30 bytes gigabyte. If the same drive mechanism is available with both SCSI and IDE interfaces, the IDE one will be sold as (say) a 20GB drive and the SCSI version as 18.6GB. -- Pigeon Be kind to pigeons Get my GPG key here: http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x21C61F7F pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Is mkboot bugged? Need another pair of eyes.
Hi. mkboot (part of the debianutils package) appears to be bugged to me, both in use and in looking at the code. But I've looked in BTS and in /usr/share/doc/debianutils, and have searched web, usenet, and mailing list archives, and haven't turned up anything. Since I'm almost always not the first person to spot a bug, I suspect I'm just missing something. So I'd like someone else to look at it, if they can. There are two issues that I see; both involve the use of mkboot to create a floppy off which one can boot. 1. The man page for mkboot indicates that it uses the kernel /vmlinuz by default, but that you can specify a different kernel on the command line. However, it doesn't say that when you supply the pathname for a kernel to use, that pathname *can't* be the actual path to the kernel, and that it *must* be a symbolic link instead. But that appears to be the way mkboot functions; if you supply a symbolic link to the kernel you want, it works ok, while if you supply a full pathname to the actual kernel file, it bombs. It makes an ext2 filesystem on the floppy, copies the kernel over, and then quits there, without doing anything with a bootloader to make the floppy bootable. Looking at the mkboot script, the problem appears to me to be in the function "makelilo", and occurs just after the kernel is copied over, in the following lines of code: # if a symbolic link, look for the real file kfile=`readlink $1` # see if we need an "initrd=" line in lilo.conf kdir=`dirname $kfile` $1 is the command-line argument that carries the kernel path to use. If a symbolic link is supplied, readlink returns the file that it links to (which could itself be a symbolic link, by the way; did the author of this script mean to use "readlink -f"?). But if the kernel path supplied *isn't* a symbolic link, readlink returns a null string. In that case, the next line sees dirname not having enough arguments, and the script bombs. Or am I missing something? 2. For the purposes of making a boot floppy, mkboot completely assumes the use of lilo; if you do not have lilo around, the script will bomb in one of two places. This is not documented in the man page, and the debianutils package doesn't have a dependency on lilo. There are functions present in the script for checking whether lilo and/or grub are in use; but from my read of the main portion of the script, those functions are only called in the case where mkboot is being run as part of the new kernel installation process (that is, with the "-i" flag), and they're only called to determine whether to update your hard drive's MBR or whether to suggest updating grub's menu.lst. They're not used in the portion of the script that involves making a boot floppy. Instead, when making a boot floppy, the machine simply assumes the use of lilo. It attempts to construct a sensible lilo.conf for the floppy, and then runs lilo on the floppy. In my case, I don't even have lilo installed; I use grub exclusively. Since the attempt to construct a sensible lilo.conf starts by reading in and parsing /etc/lilo.conf, this fails because the file isn't present, and so the script bombs there. If the file *is* present but lilo itself is not (say, you had lilo once upon a time, but replaced it with grub; but the /etc/lilo.conf is still around), the script will instead bomb when it tries to run lilo on the floppy. Am I right about these? Are these bug-report worthy? modem compatibilty

The mini-dinstall package (not in stable, I don't think) is great for this. I think it does check that you have GPG-signed changes files for everything, though, which can be a slight pain. You might be looking for single-user mode; have your boot loader add 'single' as a parameter to the kernel. (Probably type 'linux single' if you're using LILO, edit the 'boot' line appropriately in GRUB.) This starts you up with almost no services at all, but sometimes this is what you want. If you want, you can also set up a runlevel to start without xdm; remove the appropriate symlink in /etc/rc3.d for runlevel 3, for example. 'telinit 3' from the single-user boot prompt would then send you into this runlevel; adding '3' to the kernel command line would boot straight into it. If your video card isn't that hosed by the abortive X startup, you might also be able to switch to a text console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 after you boot up normally. -- David Maze [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://people.debian.org/~dmaze/ "Theoretical politics is interesting. If only the connection was severed, it is possible that the process is still running (but then, wouldn't the update be finished by now? but I do not know when 'now' is...). The other possibility is that the process died, but could not remove the lock file in time. If that is the case (check with ps first) you can safely remove the lock file and try again. what does rsync do when an input file changes?
Anybody know OTTOYH how rsync would behave if an input file was changed while it was doing its thing? Does it check checksums after syncing a file? If it does, does it go back and try again if they don't match? I'm migrating some huge files over a not-too-fast link, and other users may write to these files during the rsync operation. If rsync doesn't handle this well, any suggestions for something that might? I've also considered running rsync multiple times, so that on successive passes it will pick up the changes. I just hope that the first pass won't generate inconsistent files on the target side if the file changes in the middle. Just thought I'd ask before digging into the code. thanks, Vineet -- http://www.doorstop.net/ -- One nation, indivisible, with equality, liberty, and justice for all. pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

How to Identify Mailing Lists
Hi list. [Please CC: me on list replies, I'm too far behind in ML traffic. Thank you.] I've googled every which way I can, but I didn't find it. "It" being a list of identifying markers for various mailing lists. What I'm looking for is a way to tell a mail filtering tool how to automatically sort mails from mailing lists. To be usable with all filtering tools, such a procmail, mailagent, maildrop etc, we'd need a list of headers, or specific header contents, that various MLMs add to mails they explode. For example, this procmail recipe automatically sorts mails coming from a Mailman ML: DEFAULT=${HOME}/Maildir/ LISTID=`formail -zc -xList-Id|sed 's/.*<\(.*\)>/\1/'|tr / -` MM_FOLDER=${DEFAULT}.${LISTID}/ :0 * ^List-Id: $MM_FOLDER BTW, List-Id is defined in RFC2919. I'd love it if all MLMs would use that, then this whole problem would be solved. Does such a list exists? If not, I'd be willing to (try to) assemble one. Probably not that easy due to the various versions in use, and various local hacks applied. Or maybe it's easier to just lobby the various MLM authors to add List-Id? If so, where could I find a list of MLMs and their respective authors? Bye, J PS: This whole problem bothered me for years now... when I found out about List-Id, I was happy. Until I found the adoption rate to be... depressing. -- Jürgen A. Thanks for Your help, Jonathan PS.: For those interested in xjack, it is some form of rj45 socket, where the plug has to be inserted vertically. Therefore it has to deal with some mechanical stress. Very slow nfs client (woody) > server (woody)
Hi, I'm posting this as a last resort, as I'm now at my wits end, after several hrs googling and reading the man pages, I'm still no closer to solving this mystery. My NFS server is running stock woody (with all updates) and exporting several shares, a few for public access and one for the /home directory ,which clients mount (ok, only me and my wife), I have decided to change my workstation to woody (was running redhat, due to it having more cutting edge stuff, but lets not go there), I have woody running perfectly, yet it takes an age to read/write any files from my nfs server, where as redhat is (for nfs clients anyway) blistering fast, I have tried several wsize and rsize options, but its still very slow, I'm currently running 2.4.20 kernel (hoping this would help, but nope) Heres my current mount arguments in /etc/fstab: loki:/nfs-exports/tmp /pub/tmp nfs nfsvers=2,rsize=4096,wsize=4096,hard,bg 0 0 And I am running lockd and rpc.statd on the client as well I decided to dual boot with redhat and woody, and do some comparisons, Copying 1.2GB of data (a single tarball) from client to server Redhat: 15 mins Woody: 55 mins As I mount my home directory, its causing all programs to slow down to a crawl, whilst they are reading or writing to the directory. Please do not take this as a threat (and its not meant by this at all), I'm seriously looking at switching back to redhat, not that I want to but from what I have read I have tried most things, as its now got to the point of being unbearable ad causing my to do little or no work. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Yes ;-) If your purpose is to end up with a "non-bloated" kernel, you should just download a kernel-source package (i.e. kernel-source-2.4.20 or kernel-source-2.4.18, if you want to stick to stable) and build your own. Trying to save the work of recompiling the modules and instead recompiling the kernel is a little silly, IMO. You'd be better off downloading a non-bf kernel (i.e. kernel-image-2.4.18-, again sticking to stable) and the corresponding kernel-headers package and pcmcia-source and building your own pcmcia-modules package. Hi I guess it should be nomral to format your hard disk for the 3rd time if you are a newbie to Debian. The last BAD thing I have done is: I compiled and installed the new Qt (3.2beta1) and guess what ? KDE does not work any more. I removed and re-installed KDE3.1 with libqt-mt 3.1 but no difference. Still I get the same error message: "libkdefx.so.4 : undefined symbol: _ZN6QStyle6polishEP12QApplication " So please help me before I format my drive ;-) Thanks in advance Hamid -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Very slow nfs client (woody) > server (woody)
doh! sorry for the last post, I sent it from the wrong address, I was checking the support email at the same time.. Anyway, I have done a bit more investigation, and it seems that I only get the slowdown if I write TO the nfs server from the client, As I copied some large binaries across to the nfs share and they took around 30 mins, I then copied them back locally and it took 6 mins. Am I correct in that I may have to alter the rsize? on the client end, or is there a configuration on the server side I can do, but it would seem very client orientated. Below is from the readme but I am still very new to linux. I have successfully recompiled my kernel but below eludes me what does it mean when it says use make-kpkg to make a module. Please advise If you are using Debian, install the thinkpad-base package, then install the thinkpad-source package and use make-kpkg to make a thinkpad-modules- package for your kernel and install that. On Tue, 3 Jun 2003 16:11:12 -0700 "kevin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > How do I fix this can't lock /var/run/crond.pid Well, one way that you don't fix it is by sending the same question to the list three times in less than 24 hours. Please give people who only read the mailing list once a day, or once every few days, a chance to actually *see* your message first; and give other people, who've seen it but can't answer for some reason, a break by not asking them again and again. I don't mean this as a flame, I promise; but you might want to take the time to read: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html It's basically a guide to the etiquette of online tech support; it'll help you get useful answers to your questions in the future. As for your question, cron creates that file when it starts. It contains the process-ID of crond itself, in text. This is explained in the first few entries returned in a Google search on "crond.pid". (hint!) You didn't say under what circumstances you got that error message (which is usually a good idea, btw); so I'll assume it showed up on your console or in your syslog. Your message typically means that when cron started up, it tried to create that file, but was unable to. Usually, this is because the file is already present: either cron is already running (with the process ID contained in that file); or cron didn't clean up after itself the last time it quit, and left that file behind for some odd reason. If the former, there's nothing to fix; you're getting the error message because you're trying to run a second instance of cron, which you don't want to do anyway. If the latter, you should be able to just remove it by hand. All such files are cleaned out of /var/run automatically during the boot process anyway. -c -- Chris Metzler [EMAIL PROTECTED] (remove "snip-me." to email) "As a child I understood how to give; I have forgotten this grace since I have become civilized." - Chief Luther Standing Bear -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Still I get the same error message: "libkdefx.so.4 : undefined symbol: _ZN6QStyle6polishEP12QApplication " on my system this is supplied by: kdelibs4 Do you have: kdelibs kdelibs3 kdelibs4 installed? -K So please help me before I format my drive ;-) Thanks in advance Hamid -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". So i re-installed. I'm so impatient, eh? Ack, my apologies - I should have mentioned that there's a shell option on the install disk from which you could have disabled your xdm login. Go as if to install; on the screen with the scrollable menu that the installation process walks you through, scroll down the menu and somewhere near the bottom you'll find "Execute a Shell". So you just go straight to that without doing any installing, and you can then mount your HDs by hand and edit the init scripts or whatever. Bit late now, but might come in useful in future. -- Pigeon Be kind to pigeons Get my GPG key here: http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x21C61F7F pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Am I supposed to remove all files and links manually, 'cos Qt does not have any make unintsall or make remove ? If necessary, yes. Such are the joys of, IMHO, incomplete makefiles (since they don't provide for an uninstall) and the risks of beta software. If you haven't done this, then it is likely that the 3.2beta1 files are still in your library paths and are conflicting with your stable libraries. Thus, your removal and reinstallation of the other software was useless. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
