I noticed that there are 2 verison of this kernel driver in kernel 
2.4.19 and above (I'm not 100% about that),  the standard version (by 
Donald Becker IIRC) and Intel's version. You might want to try compiling 
one of these kernel's on another machine perhaps? Intel's module goes by 
the name of e100.
